The merchant altered my bill, unjustly adding over $20 (seemingly to achieve a 25% tip AFTER Tax). Many reviewers report that too, please SEE! Then, they proactively and arrogantly contacted me to lie. Despite presenting the original receipt, they insist no overcharge was made on my amount. Shockingly, they manipulated the service charge I left on the receipt, inputting an arbitrary amount they wanted into their system. Their approach was baffling, reaching out only to offer lies, even when confronted with the ORIGINAL receipt I kept and provided. This left me no choice but to seek assistance from my bank. Very few staff members. The male at the front desk was very rude. We arrived a few minutes early, and many places were available; he mentioned that we would need to wait for just the right time for our reservation. However, after a while, another female staff member took us straight in. Management was very disorganized. You could barely call for a staff for the entire dining experience. Our shrimp ceviche tasted less than fresh. It was weird. I don't know if it was sitting out for a bit or not refrigerated properly, ut itlly left us bolting from the restaurant just after our meal was served. (We paid before we bolted.) I love Korean food. Then we start with the server, who clearly seemed to lose steam (and interest) when we said we didn't drink alcohol since she clearly (and numerously) tried to push their happy hour. We get it. Happy hour. Now you get it. We do not drink! It really steams me when a server's entire body changes and they become completely detached and unavailable after they think they're losing up selling because we don't drink. Guess what? We normally tip twice as much as most people It's a really bad choice. Not to mention, servers should NEVER EVER dismiss a diner because they choose to drink soberly. Solid first visit to Barn Joo. The staff was very friendly, and our group ~8 was able to make a dinner reservation a day ahead of time with ease. The service overall was quite slow, so that would be an area of improvement. Favorite drinks were the Elder Fashioned and the seasonal cocktails. I came here with my two friends for my friend's birthday. I highly encourage making a reservation, because then you can ~ spin the wheel ~ !!! Depending on what the wheel lands on, you can "win" a free order! Possibilities include sapporo, soju cocktail, fries, and kimchi (perhaps other but I forget). We won the fries! They were delicious and had truffle essence too, and we were given ketchup and spicy mayo to dip. To start we ordered the spicy crunchy tofu as an appetizer, which was really tasty. It also comes with a small serving of kimchi, with a great, unique flavor. Bulgogi (main) - it said it comes with mushrooms and shishito peppers, but it did not, and instead came with a lot of cabbage and 3 fried rice cake, and potatoes. However it was still a great dish. The truffle essence really brings out amazing flavor in the bulgogi! We ordered 2 sides of rice to split between the three of us. Food here was really delicious and I would love to come back to try more of the menu. Had lunch outside in their covered seating area yesterday on a Saturday around noon and experienced delicious food and terrific service. We made reservations in advance for outdoor seating and as soon as we sat down the server passed us a physical menu and also showed us the QR code to scan. He answered our questions regarding entree portions clearly--the hot pot is enough for 2-3 people to share. ^_^ Since one of our party was pregnant we weren't sure if the restaurant made mocktails, and the server kindly informed us that while they weren't on the menu they could concoct a few options if we were interested. My friend ended up ordering a hibiscus lemonade drink and it was so good she ordered a second. The server also checked in often during the entire meal so a shout out for top notch customer service. For food we each ordered a different hot stone bowl--bulgogi ($20), tofu and mushroom ($20), and spicy seafood ($21). The bowls came out sizzling, and we were all satisfied with our meals. My friend commented that while there was a lot of tofu, her tofu mushroom bowl seemed to lack mushrooms. The flavor of the bulgogi bowl was great. Personally I felt the spicy seafood bowl had delicious flavor and was nicely medium spicy, but I wished it was a bit less saucy, so that not every bite was spicy. I've heard some good things about Barn joo; however, my experience for a weekend lunch was underwhelming. I ordered the bibimbap, which is a pretty safe choice usually. This one did not taste or look like a Bibimbap (in a bad way). It ended up more like a sashimi bowl with all the raw fish and fish roe, and then had a sprig of spring mix lettuce (?) and some crunchy stuff that combined had a rather unappealing flavor. I would be fine if it was a tasty bowl of sushi (I like sushi!!) but this combo did not work out with the raw fish and bitterness from the leaves/other toppings. The service speed was average and the restaurant had some nice vibes with the colored lighting. Came for lunch on a Saturday just when it opened and there were seats aplenty. We were quickly seated after vaccine cards were checked and served water while we browsed the menu. We had amazing service throughout, so 5/5 on that regard. The waiter recommended that we get some mains and tapas to share as the tapas are quite small and wow did I underestimate what he meant by "small". For tapas, we got the asparagus and fries and the asparagus came with maybe 6 pieces of asparagus LOL. The fries were a solid amount of fries in a little basket. Ignoring their size, the tapas were very good - asparagus had a nice crispy exterior and the fries had a strong truffle flavor and some spicy mayo to dip it into. We also got one of the deep fried tempura rolls - this was pretty mediocre. Given their other food options, I'd probably not get this next time. For mains, we got bulgogi and some pork jowl. Both were good but the pork was my favourite. So flavorful and not too chewy! Each main also came with corn, potato, and peppers. Barn Joo is a really fun place to go to dinner/drinks with friends. The ambiance was not what I expected as it was definitely louder and on the casual side. It balances between having upscale food with a more relaxed environment. I came on a Thursday and made the reservation the day of. Normally, the entire party has to be here in order to be seated, but since it wasn't that busy tonight, they were able to seat me before everyone arrived. Although it was a little noisier than I would've liked, the food was definitely the star of the show. We ordered to share and got the hwe bibimbap, spicy pork, and soy garlic wings. The portions for the mains (the bibimbap and spicy pork) were quite large so I'd definitely recommend coming and sharing a few dishes. The dining area is loud and you hear happy chatter with the occasional clanking of wine glasses. Barn Joo is better for parties of 4 or less in my opinion. They seem to have a little bit of struggle with larger parties (like our party of 8). It took the server a hot minute to take our order and we had to request multiple times of other servers and bussers for someone to take our order. It irks me when we have to do this but it was a family dinner so I just sucked it up. The portions size was fair but there was really nothing to rave about. The kimchi they serve is "old kimchi" where it's extra sour due to the extended fermentation. Me no likey. We also got their seafood pancake, bibimbap, parmesean fries, army stew, and tuna bruschetta. None of the food was particularly amazing but they weren't bad either. But for a spot as popular as Barn Joo 35, I was expecting something more instead of just slightly elevated bar food. First off, the dumplings tasted like frozen dumplings I get at hmart and they were $12 for just 3 of them?! I get we're in nyc but that's ridiculous. Didn't have to wait too long for the food to arrive! We ordered: -soft shell crab: this is the dish to get for seafood lovers. The crab's middle shell was where the crab flavor is concentrated! The crab legs were coated in batter so I could only taste that and not any crab flavor. Totally would order this again. It's small but enough for 2 people to share. -tofu and mushroom dolsot bibimbap: wanted to eat some vegetables and this dish was a good choice. They also provide gochujang to add to the bibimbap but we didn't add it. Rice and vegetables were nice and hot. This was a very filling dish. The chicken pieces are in a bath of a sweet, spicy, & savory sauce with cheese melted on top. This was probably my favorite thing we ordered. The chicken was so juicy & the sauce was killer! NACHO BELLY This dish has a Korean fusion twist on bossam, where the pork belly is infused with more flavors and sits atop of bed of nachos. The nachos were so crunchy & I can tell they were freshly fried. Rather than salsa, the dipping sauce seems to have a gochujang base which I found immensely more tasty. Eat the pork belly with the nacho & sauce and it's even better! SPICY PORK This was the only main dish we ordered, hence why it's more expensive because it's much larger. The amount of spicy pork is generous, and has a sweet & spicy flavor palette. On the stone plate there is also corn, mushroom, pepper, potatoes, & fried onion. I find that service is lacking and have gotten worse during the pandemic. I ordered the seafood kalguksoo soup and enjoyed the savory broth. Seafood wasn't the freshest as the blue crabs were pretty mushy so they were probably frozen before. Shrimp and mussels were a little fresher with some spinach and shredded seaweed. I tried the raw fish bibimbop and I didn't like the vinegar based sauce. However, I noticed they used salted pollack roe to add seasoning along with the raw salmon, tuna and white fish mixed with the pickled vegetables. The bar does not have any hard to get whiskeys and sojus. I would just get the Macallan 18! Perhaps this place is a better place to just have some drinks and anjoo with friends if you need to meet them outside somewhere. The Happy Hour selections (from 4-6PM) were more biased toward the drinks. Their drinks are delicious, although very sweet! Each came with a lollipop plopped inside with some gummies. I got the Midtown Forsythia ($7), which I definitely recommend if you like a fruity lychee taste. The Passionate Barn Joo ($7) had a strong tangy passion fruit taste. The Truffle Fries ($7) from the Happy Hour pricing were decent, with truffle oil used and a spicy mayo and ketchup dip. The $1.50 wings were sweet and slightly crispy but not as good as I recall anymore. They were also really small. After happy hour is when the downfall struck, as the food became nothing more than money being thrown. The Bulgogi Taco ($18) came with 3pcs and they were so lackluster, particularly in their shell. It was very dry! Their meat wasn't even good, as it just tasted like salty mush. The Veggie Korean Pancake ($23) tasted standard, with a good crisp. We had the Spicy Pork ($34) and BBQ Chicken ($31) main. Random corn, rice cakes, cabbage, and potatoes were placed alongside the meat. The rice cakes were incredibly hard. The BBQ Chicken meat was probably the best thing I ate here, as the pieces were well grilled and juicy. The Seafood Japchae ($25) was very salty, with the glass noodles soaking in all the sauces. The Dumpling ($12) were the worst. This $4 a steamed dumpling was heavy on the vegetables, even when the choice was Shrimp. Finally, our last dish was Korean Army Stew ($35), and it was standard. There wasn't enough noodles to go around. Other than the throwback music mixed with trendy songs, Barn Joo is a hard pass for me. We ordered the Korean Army stew, chicken katsu, and the spicy pork main and all of them were delicious. The spicy pork main was a standout for me, with a big variety of ingredients that made for a filling and tasty dish. The stew was good too, though I felt it was a bit pricey for what was essentially kimchi, ramen, and some cheaper deli meats. Despite that, the food was definitely worth the occasional splurge for a Friday night out. My four coworkers and I came here for lunch after one suggested Barn Joo We all opted for the lunch special. I had the sashimi bibimbap, one had the uni bibimbap, another had the bulgogi hotstone bowl and the other two had the spicy pork hotstone bowl. Each meal came with a soup, a large potato croquette, shrimp tempura, salads, tiger roll and a small apple salad. My dish was normal $26 but it's $29 for the lunch special; a really good deal. The nori rice in my meal was really flavorful. I didn't love it at first but it grew on me. The bibimbap itself was a huge portion. The soup and salad were good. The potato croquette was huge and tasty. The shrimp tempura was surprisingly really flavorful. Sometimes when you get shrimp tempura from some places it can be bland. The apple salad was chunks of apples in a mayo sauce. I didn't love it but wasn't bad. We enjoyed our meal here! I still can't get over how much food you get for the price. Taking off 1 star for the host / time it took to order. Pro tip: Make a reservation! Not only will it help you skip the crowd (we went on a Wednesday for dinner and it was packed), but you'll also get to spin a wheel where you can potentially get something free (like Sapporo). Too bad the host never told us about this -- we only found out because we saw the wheel as we were leaving. Another gripe about the host is that we arrived on time, but we were told that we had to wait 10-15 minutes for our table to be ready. Since it was so packed in the entryway, we wait outside the restaurant, where there was a glass wall dividing us from the host. We were literally just on the other side of the host. And yet, the host never signaled that our table was ready, and almost didn't seat us because we had to wait inside (which he never specified). The food was really good, but it took us a long time to find a server to take our order. At least the food came out relatively fast! We had: 1) Spicy Pork Tacos (5/5) - note you can only pick one filling for all three tacos. So it's not like you can get one of each filling. 2) Veggie Japchae (4/5) - a bit too many veggies in terms of the veggie to noodle ratio, but the flavor was delicious. 3) Bulgogi Hot Stone Bowl (5/5) - fried egg and rice were great! read more

Me and my friend went here for a meal. We were sorely disappointed. Although the environment was good, the food was not acceptable. The galbi hot stone bowl and hwe bibimbap were complete scams. It was entirely rice and vegetables (very unseasoned mind you) without much meat at all, for 25 dollars! Absolutely blasphemous. Perhaps we should have ordered a fully meat entree instead, but I will not be back to do that. read more
