This was my first time at Barrio Queen and because I had heard so many good things, my expectations were pretty high. I'm sad to say that I was semi-disappointed. We went for a restaurant week and got a really good deal - - $33 for a frozen margarita, a starter, and entree, and a dessert. But before was nice - I really loved a little Mariachi angels on The Wall close to the front door. They're a large murals on the wall, and if you pay close attention to the lights hanging over the bar you'll see that each shade has a skull. Very cool! We were seated immediately I have very friendly hostess. Our server came and started our order. Some chips and salsa forgot to our table, but we both said that it tasted like they hadn't used salt at all and preparing the salsa. It tasted so weird until we ended up getting a salt shaker and adding quite a bit of salt. Once it was salted it was okay. We ordered the regular Margarita and the mango margarita. They were both good - no complaints there. My son ordered the Mexican Street corn. I love Mexican street corn and order it whenever it's on the menu, and I can say this was the least favorite I've ever had. There just wasn't a lot to it. It seemed like corn (there was no char??) with some cheese and toppings on top, but once you ate the top it was just corn. I ordered the guacamole. It came in a little cup so it wasn't the guacamole I'd heard about that is made tableside. In fact it wasn't guacamole at all. It was a little cup with cubes of avocados, pomegranate seeds, some red onion, and whatever else you might put in guacamole - but it was not smashed up at all. Like the salsa, there was no hint of salt. It was just kind of weird. My son ordered the Taco trio. The tacos were pretty good. There was a chicken taco, carne asada taco, and a birria taco. The carne asada Taco stood out by far. I ordered the enchilada trio which consisted of a carne asada enchilada, a chicken enchilada and a cheese enchilada. Carne asada enchilada and chicken enchilada were fine. The star of the trio was the cheese enchilada which is made with oaxaca, cotija, and goat cheeses with a cream sauce. That was really, really good. The rice was fine and I did like the beans which tasted a bit like chorizo. I said making the chorizo flavor, too. For dessert, my son got flan. He liked it, but I didn't try it because I don't like flan. I got the churros and they were heavenly. There was cream inside and there was a caramel sauce with pecans - - delish! All in all, I would say this place did not blow me away. There were some things that I really liked and some things that I didn't, so I suppose it all balances out. I don't see myself rushing back here.

3 stars for customer service, otherwise food is good! Went in for restaurant week on a Sunday afternoon and had a couple of issues not receiving items listed on the restaurant week menu. The server resolved the issues for the most part, but the kitchen manager was very defensive and made a lot of excuses. This ruined our experience overall. First, we realized the side of refried beans was not brought out with our food, nor did our server realize it should have been included. Then, our dessert churros on the restaurant week menu were supposed to be chocolate filled with pecans, cajeta and strawberries but we were given plain caramel churros and was told they are out of strawberries. This is only day 3 of Restaurant Week and they're already off to a bad start! Did not meet our expectations and not interested in coming back. **UPDATE** This evening, while looking closer at the menu, I realized I was also never given the black beans and rice with my taco plate!

I really enjoyed my lunch here today. The chips came out hot and fresh and I loved the thickness. Each and every crunchy bite was very satisfying! Since I love spiciness, our server brought us an additional spicy salsa too. I ordered a couple of quesabirria tacos and they were pretty tasty. The consommé was so flavorful that I drank every bit of it. I could have easily drank a bowl of it. It was that good! Their house margarita is generous in size and very good too. While they don't have a lunch menu, they have amazing daily specials Monday - Thursdays all day and happy hour Monday - Fridays 3-6pm. Because today was BOGO tacos, my tacos were 1/2 off which is a great deal. Their $10 house margarita is very solid but during happy hour, it's 1/2 off too which is pretty amazing. Service was very quick and attentive. They also have a spring menu that looked yummy so I'm pretty sure I'll go back to try and have another margarita!

My first time here and I really liked the decor and ambience. After our order was taken the nice server brought us chips and salsa. They were hot and crunchy and very tasty. We ordered some quesabirria tacos and they were very flavorful. The consommé was rich with umami flavor. I also had their house margarita and it was solid! Would definitely go back during happy hour and have a couple:) looking forward to returning as o definitely want to try some other items on the menu.

My most recent visit to Barrio Queen was fine, but nothing extraordinary. I ordered three of their tacos - the fish, the chicken, and the birria taco. The food was average this time around, and while the service was decent, it didn't really stand out. I've definitely had better meals and overall experiences here in the past, which is why I'll still come back. This visit just didn't quite live up to what I know they're capable of.

First visit to Barrio Queen in downtown Gilbert -- thought it was closed at first since the patio was empty... had it all to ourselves for a while! Chill vibe, smaller patio than the Tempe location, and since it's right next to the street, it could probably use a more frequent hosing down. Super friendly service, and no rush at all, which made it easy to kick back and catch up with friends. We hit happy hour and had tacos and a quesadilla -- both were legit. The margarita + sangria which didn't disappoint either. It's right in the heart of downtown Gilbert, so give yourself a little extra time to walk from the plentiful parking. We'll definitely be back! We were visiting friends in Phoenix and they took us to Barrio Queen. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful. They really took the time to have authentic pieces throughout and their store has some really beautiful items for purchase. The food was delicious, although we did not get to try their guacamole that is made at table side. The drinks were delicious. Service was great and our waiter was very attentive.

The service was amazing, but the food was really disappointing. Extremely overrated for price. Very bland. The corn was good though!

Stopped in for lunch today with some coworkers. We were there right when they opened at 11 and were seated right away (actually we were the first customers). Service was good. We each ordered something different, enchiladas, quesadillas, Elote, chimichanga, and guacamole. Everything was good, but one person said the quesadilla was too salty for them. I thought it was good but then again I like salt. The place is fun and festive. We were able to grab lunch in just 1 hour which is good when you are on the work clock.

    It's great food and drinks!

We got super lucky and were able to sit at the bar, open seating, with the TVs. There are regulars that come in and seem to have a good rapport with the staff and they love the food. It was a bit of a rush time and there was only one bartender so service was a bit slow. We did get some chips and salsa as we waited. Good chips, airy and crispy. The salsa was OK. I'm personally just not a fan of roasted salsa. Their beer was crisp and thoroughly cold which was refreshing. I tried the amor de mango and it was tasty. I can't remember my first drink either. It was a Paloma or a margarita, but i didn't enjoy as much, which is why I changed my next drink. The chimi trio was very tasty and full of flavor, one bean one chicken one beef, all good. Then we got the carnitas cheese crisp which was interesting and had good flavor. I would order both again. Service was pretty good. Like I said, the bartender was busy working by himself and when one of his coworkers noticed, we didn't have any more water then she would come by and help so that was appreciated. It s good date spot, or catching up with a friend or just grabbing a bite to eat and drink for yourself. I look forward to coming back and trying entrees. My only hope is that during the hot bright times they lower the shades and get more shades. Not only to reduce the sun coming in but also reduce the glare on the tv that way all spots at the bar are good spots.

You start off with complimentary homemade chips and salsa. The chips are always fresh and crispy, and the salsa has a delicious smoky flavor with just the right amount of heat. If you're looking for a good drink, the mango margarita is honestly one of the best I've had. The watermelon agua fresca is another favorite--it's crisp, refreshing, and has just the right amount of sweetness. As for the food, some of my favorites are the pozole, Pick Two Tacos, and the Famous Carnitas, which is also one of my husband's favorites. He usually goes for the Burro Combo, Chile Verde, or Famous Carnitas. You really can't go wrong with any of them! This time, I ordered the carnitas, and they were so good. The meat was seasoned perfectly, tender, and had a nice bite to it. The portion is also very generous, especially with the rice and beans. I almost always end up taking leftovers home, which is definitely a plus. The atmosphere is another reason I enjoy coming here. It's casual, comfortable, and relaxing, and they also have outdoor seating if you prefer to sit outside. If you're looking for a family-friendly spot with great food, generous portions, good drinks, and reasonable prices, definitely give this place a try. It continues to be one of my favorites!
