Hal Epstein is a wealth of knowledge. He is a bit of an odd duck in that he is under contract as the local Bosch distributor, so he must use Bosch parts. In exchange, he gets formal training every year. That brings him up to speed with very recent technology that these exotic German cars have. I first came to Hal's business in 1989. Several BMWs later I have nothing but highest praise. Has every repair been perfect? No - of course not. But anytime something was wrong, Hal actively did something to make it right. I originally bought my son's 330 I BMW to Bavarian performance specialist because the driver side window would not go up all the way. They fixed it so that the window would go up but all they did is kind of move it into place and they charged me $285. After I picked up the car while driving home, I noticed an alert light on the dash saying that the water level was low . I went back to where I lovers and they charged me $3500 to determine what the problem was and it turned out to be a thermostat which they charged me another $800 for. After picking up the car for the second time on the way home, I found another alert light that was on telling me that the driver assist was not working. I returned the car back to Bavarian motors, and then informed me that two wires have been cut on the steering hard wiring harness. I asked why this had not come up before because the lights were not on before I took it there so I am sure that these wires were cut during the repair of the thermostat but I had no proof. They told me that it would be $6000 to replace the wiring harness and the steering column because you cannot buy just the wiring harness. After getting that repaired when I went to pick up the car, it had a flat tire, which was never flat before I brought it there. It seems like every time I bring my car over there something new crops up after they supposedly fix the other thing that I brought it in for after spending almost $12,000 there I will never go back again read more

I left my car overnight and found my wheel rim scraped probably from someone who hit the curb with it. Good thing the owner had it fixed on his own dime. Also, my seats were stained with what looked like footprints; someone must've stepped on top of the seats. Very bad experience. Would not recommend. read more

I brought my 2013 Audi S4 by here to get a number of things done, mostly aftermarket clutch line and coil spring install and re-bleeding the brakes after I was unable to get the last bit of air out when I upgraded calipers. They did an excellent job, with pricing a little on the high side but tolerable, and they identified multiple other issues that I was able to later repair in my own garage, mostly related to leaky gaskets. All in all I was completely satisfied with the work even though it did take longer than initially estimated. The only reason I'm not going back to them is that I have found it near impossible to get a call back when asking for estimates. I have been repeatedly promised a return call with an estimate so I can bring in the car for them to work on it, but I guess they might just be too busy to take on more work? I decided to go elsewhere to a more responsive shop for additional work, but when they had my car they did a great job so I'm only docking a star. Hal & Tiffany run a great place for BMWs. Every time I need tire(s) replaced on my bimmer, I always purchase it on Tire Rack and have them directly deliver to Bavarian Perf Spec. Usuall Hall will send an email saying that he got my order, then he follows up another when the tires arrive at the store so that I can email/call and make an appointment to bring the car in. Now that's sweet service. Tiffany who runs the front office looks uncannily like Stephanie March who plays the DA on "Law & Order SVU" (I think). I always see the mechanics here working on cool BMWs. Luckily mine hasn't needed much work (aside from 17" run flats), but they're definitely an option I'd consider (as opposed to the dealerships in the area). read more

My normal mechanic told me that my blower motor and resistor were out, which I thought was suspicious. I called around to multiple other shops, all who wanted 100+ dollars just to look at my car. Hal kindly offered to see the car for himself and suggested to me after some conversation that it was likely that there was a blown fuse, and that I could fix the car probably by myself. Short and sweet... took my car in to have front bushings replaced. Emphasized that I wanted BMW original replacements... Hal swore to me that they would be. Drove the car home and it felt likely a completely different car. Called Hal to ask again that he used the BMW parts... I took him at his word... but the car never felt the same. Moved out of the area and upon coming back took my car to Bimmer Connection (BTW... awesome shop) where I confirmed that the bushings Hal replaced were not genuine BMW or OEM parts... in fact, Bimmer had never seen them before. How do I know this? I had to replace the bushings again... thanks Hal! Long story short... there is something not quite right about this shop. Save yourself the time, money and hassle. I came to this shop with an odd sound when my BMW was shifting from 3 to 4th. Hal was very thorough with trying to discover where the sound was coming from I'll give him that. He recommended a transmission service. And gave me a quote. Which I thought was a fair price. Here is where things went south real quick. When I told him I already had a OEM transmission service kit from FCP Euro he said he couldn't use it because he has a contract with BOSCH. And that he couldn't use it. WTF!!! He told me to go next door maybe they would install the OEM kit. Then he said if it caught on fire he's be responsible because he used those OEM parts. What a clown!! Hal next time you lie and try and treat someone stupid. Maybe you should think again. Something felt off about the whole experience. My only thing I could come up with he wanted to use cheap aftermarket parts that he could profit on. And cared less about quality OEM parts. During this visit, Hal came out did a quick systems check and asked me a few questions. Apparrently, saving a few cents per gallon at the cheap-o gas stations was the root of my problem! Hal saved us thousands of dollars to fix our 535i, we are extremely happy customers and will definitely bring our car back whenever it needs service! He is very knowledgable and cares about his customers. When we had an error with the TPM system (tire pressure monitoring system), another local repair shop in the Thousand Oaks Automall wanted us to replace the RDC control unit and tire sensors. The first thing Hal did was look at the diagnostic history and at the battery performance. All that was needed was a new battery. If we had spent the $2500+ with the other shop, we still wouldn't have fixed the primary issue and would have still needed to buy a new battery. It even solved a few other issues we had seen such as the car sometimes not finding the key fob and occasional malfunction of the suspension system. read more

I was looking for an independent BMW shop to perform a pre-purchase inspection on a 5-series BMW in the Thousand Oaks area and happened upon Hal's shop. I am very picky with mechanics. I have owned four BMWs and am a long time BMW car club member. I prefer to work on my own cars, but don't have the tools and know how to do it all. Hal was willing to speak with me at length about the inspection, and did a fantastic job. He even put some of the inspection cost toward some other service he performed on the car. I've brought our BMW's to Hal for years...I can't imagine going anywhere else after the factory pre-paid service and warranty period. He even does a pre-warranty expiration "courtesy inspection" so you can get the dealer to do work they likely missed! He isn't cheaper than the dealer, but the quality of work is better, and Hal can identify issues the dealer won't--like the need to change transmission fluid and filter on your "lifetime lubrication" automatic. read more

I great service when a tow truck dropped my vintage Mercedes off 15 minutes after closing time on a Friday evening. The battery was dead and the compartment couldn't be reached to change the battery because the electrical locks were not operating. Hal was able to find contact points to use a mini-charger to unlock the compartment and get the engine started. He didn't have the specific battery size in stock so he sent me on to get the battery replaced by the towing company, and made no charge for his own services. It got me out of a jam and saved me from having to leave my car 20 miles from home over the weekend. read more

I brought my BMW Z4 in for a tail-light replacement . The car was running perfectly when I brought it in. The car was there for an hour and when I picked it up and drove a short distance to home it was making an awful noise. I called Hal who said to bring it back. He is trustworthy, honest, empathetic, and great to talk to! His repair estimates are 99.9% right on - but if he finds anything he didn't expect, he will call you right away, not wait for the end of the day like other shops will. His prices are higher than most, but lots lower than the dealer would charge. In this case, you get what you pay for. His knowledge of any issues your Beemer is known for is handled with PREVENTATIVE measures that will buy you miles and miles of great performance and, frequently, will save you money in the long run. Tiffany is amazing in the front office. Bring in all of your old repair receipts and she will put your car's repair history in order and have it all organized. I have a 2004 3 series and have been coming to Bavarian Performance Specialists for about 4 years. My certified pre-owned car came off warranty and I was looking for a shop other than a dealership. I searched and looked around several shops in the Conejo Valley. I stopped by Hal's shop and "interviewed" some of his clients picking up and dropping off their vehicles. I was impressed with their loyalty and gave the shop a chance...and here I am 4 years later. I believe that Hal will give you an honest diagnosis and has a genuine interest in you wanting to come back to his shop. Hal and Tiffany are always courteous and make it a comfortable place to do business. I like that the garage is right out front and you can see the work going on. Nick does a great job in the garage and is more than happy to review the repairs/service that are done with you as well as Hal. Once my engine light came on so I scheduled an appointment and dropped off my car. I received a call later that day explaining that it was a bad connection on one of my hoses - it was a simple fix and I was not charged. I own a 1974 BMW 2002 and finding someone here in Thousand Oaks, CA. that knows these cars inside and out, is a pretty tough find. That said, I took on chance on Hal (BPS) and was initially delighted to find that he had worked on '02's before and even made mention that he had owned several in the past. My first couple dealings with him were OK. Brake Bleeding and some small misc. bits. I think an Automatic Shifter Bushing had also worn out. His labor costs were very pricey I thought, when compared to other '02 / BMW specialty shops that I've dealt with in the past. After my first couple of dealings with him, everything kinda' we kaput. I had taken my car in for some minor tune-up work and he ended-up sitting on my car for a week. This, after he had told the service would be a relatively easy fix. I kept getting.. "Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow." Eventually, I got my car back and was OK with it. Though, I must admit that I was incredibly frustrated waiting a little over a week for something that was supposed to be relatively simple. The work he had done for this, too turned out to be BIG $$$ for a small fix. The next time I had an issue with my car, my ignition system was acting wonky. Hal told me that I needed to buy a new electronic ignition kit. That the kit that I currently had on the car was shot. This I did this to the tune of $110.00. A little farther into him working on my car, he then told me that my ignition system was fine, that the kit wasn't the issue at all. I was left eating the cost of the replacement. Days later, Hal tells me that there is a short somewhere under the dash and that he'll get to shortly. Bare in mind, this whole process has by now taken another week. Him getting to the so-called short never happened. By this point in time, I had enough. I needed my car and pulled it out of his shop. I spoke with one of his mechanics (away from the shop in the parking lot) about the situation. He completely understood and told me that I wasn't the first person to do so. From there, I ended up taking my BMW '02 to JF Pro Bimmer in Van Nuys. This was the smartest move I could have made. Jack (the owner), is an awesome guy, knows '02's and many other BMW's inside and out. Heck! The guy races '02's as a hobby. Within 10 Minutes of my being there, he managed to diagnose the issue. As it turned out, I had a bad (read Cheap Chinese) Distributor Cap, a bad Spark Plug Wire and bad (read Cheap Chinese) Rotor. Cost of fix? $65.00. This included parts and labor. I seriously doubt Hal would ever charge that much for anything. For that matter.. "Why couldn't Hal figure this out?" I've since put Hal behind me and have chalked it up to lesson learned. Yes, I do have to drive a bit further now, but it's well worth it. "Thank You, Jack." In summary, I guess if you ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY don't want to drive outside of Thousand Oaks and your money and time is NOT an issue, then Hal is probably the guy you'll want to talk to. He's certainly not for me, though. read more

Hal comes out a good guy at the beginning until you realize he has overcharges you more than what a dealer would charge you. Save your money and go to the dealer instead. Hal will promise you to get the job done for cheap then he will add on more stuff later on and then you realize you are knee deep in it and you have no choice but to pay him to get it done. I brought the car in on a Thursday because a service engine light came on and a whining noise was coming from the engine compartment. By next Tuesday, the fault codes had been cleared and the car was still in the same condition. When I expressed my concern that nearly a week had passed and nothing had been accomplished, Hal reminded me that he had cleared the code and done some minor tasks that could potentially lead to such fault codes. However, my main concern was with the condition of the vehicle and the noise that prompted me to bring the car in for maintenance in the first place, not the service engine soon light being on. I was charged close to $200 dollars for the code read. I then had to take the car to a different shop to address the mechanical failure that was resulting in the whining noise. Of course, the official BMW shop was now at a disadvantage in troubleshooting the problem since they no longer had the benefit of the codes. While Bavarian may have the best of intentions, I don't think they have the in-house expertise to address all mechanical problems. Keep that in mind as it may cost you additional time and money! read more

There's that saying "if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all', but it's been a couple months and I constantly find myself using YELP when trying new places. I finally felt the need to post my experience with Bavarian Performance which was not only the worse, but embarrassing at the same time. Who calls the cops on a customer for no reason! Was it because I chose not to do recommended repairs?? Unfortunately my mechanic does not have the BMW machine to reset certain codes, so suggested I take my car to the dealership.Made appt Bavarian for am appt and dropped it off night before to avoid the DEALERSHIP. I literally picked my car from my mechanics shop in Ventura and drove it straight to Hal's shop with no problems with the exception of my steering wheel being a little bit off due to the Steering Angle Sensor code my car was firing (reason taking it to Hal). Next day no call from Bavarian. I call them around noon and they still hadn't looked at my car. Finally get a call at around 3:40 pm and the gal has no knowledge of what she's telling me, starts laundry list of what's wrong with my car. I basically tell her, I'll be there in 20 mins. I get there and the tech starts going over recommended repairs. Starts by showing me the "UPSELLS". Comes down to, if it not broke why fix it and my mechanic feels the same way! After I shoot down the upsells, they go to the repair that was really needed. Drive from Ventura to TO my lower control arm tie rod blows up?! I guess it's possible, I call my mechanic and he tells me to bring it back to him as his work, parts are guaranteed (defected OE part he replace a year ago). This is where it gets interesting - I let Hal know my mechanic is going to warranty the work. Hal tells me I need to pick my car up tomorrow because they need time to buckle it up cuz they close at 5:00 (it was approx. 4:10 at this time). I was going to be out of town the next day, so I had to get my car out. I take care of my invoice - and start chatting with staff - all OK, right. After my car is buckled down (10 minutes later), Hal comes into the office and tells me he cannot release my car because it unsafe to drive. First I've heard of this. Tells me the only way he can release it to me is if I have it towed on a flat bed. Ok - so he suggest using the tow company he uses and "they can bill shop" I'm having car towed too. I told him it was ok because I have AAA. Call AAA at 4:19; I let Hal know Flat Bed on its way. Again Hal is adamant that the shop I'm towing my car should pay for the tow. Meanwhile I'm chatting away with his tech - all ok right. Get a call from AAA 20 minutes later to tell me they are waiting on a flatbed, so it's going to be another 15-20 minutes. Let Hal know they are running behind and tells me, if they aren't here by 5:00 he can't release car. At 4:45 a Deputy shows up in the parking lot and Hal walks to towards him. I look at his tech and ask him, did he call the cops? He had no idea...Apparently he did! Deputy parks in front of shop after speaking with Hal. Hal calls his tech over and I finally walk up to Deputy and ask him what was going on. He basically tells me they had a call come in but there's nothing he can do. He was going to wait for tow truck to show up to keep the peace. I explained what happened, and was just waiting on the tow truck as Hal requested. Asked the officer what time the call went in and he tells me 4:24. This was a few minutes after I told Hal tow truck was on its way! Cop was like, if you called the tow truck, what's the problem!! I told deputy tow truck is running late and should be there shortly. Deputy then says, there is nothing he can do unless you drive down the st and there is a visible safety issue. But if I drove the car in with no problem, he didn't understand why he was refusing to release car even after I called the tow truck. He takes off. I was like WTH is happening here to myself! I didn't lose my cool or was I belligerent to anyone at the shop.After seeing the blown tie rod, I was not about to drive off in my car and put myself or anyone else at danger. I know enough about cars that I would be stupid to drive it like that. I don't have money to throw around, but if my mechanic was going to warranty the work, why would I pay for the same repair? Why pay for unnecessary work? I paid my invoice, get my car off the rack so I can have it towed when tow truck shows up. Does Hal do this so customers give in and say just fix it!!! Hal leaves and has his tech wait around to hand keys over once Tow truck shows (hour later). Can't speak for Hal's reasoning....maybe he was having a bad day! Not only did he lose a new customer, he lost family/friends that referred me to him (used him for extended warranty work). FYI - after repairs called Hal to make appt to reset code since already paid for. No Apology from him. Took his tech 2-3 minutes tops to reset!! read more

Dropped car off in the morning when they opened, was told they would call us before noon after free courtesy check. We already knew our issues and what we wanted done, Hal stated they do a complete check and would call with costs and findings. Never received calls, called them several times in the same day to determine issues and potential costs, finally at end of the day was told what was wrong however did not have costs and would have to call us back later in the evening from home even if he had to and of course he never did, they kept car overnight and then next morning we had to call again to determine costs and agree to what repairs were to be done, much to Hal's surprise we did not chose to go with a $118 oil change and $160 spark plug change for a Jetta, after selecting what service we did want the shop to do he again said he would have to call back as he did not have the cost and when the car would be done. (it was noon and his technician went on break) So I went down there at 130pm and learned his technician was now on lunch and so I sat in front of the shop for over two hours to watch a technician finally return from lunch and actual work being done on the car. While there, I heard the same stories being told customer after customer on the telephone regarding their cars in his shop. Terrible communication, taking on more than they can handle. read more

Stay away from this place. Overcharged me for diagnostics and never fixed the problem. Had me bring the car in repeatedly over a period of MONTHS but never fixed the issues. I finally had to find another shop who was able to fix the problems in 1 visit. read more

Horrible experience. Had brought my E46 in due to another shop in the area not fixing the issue correctly. Got the alignment redone here and it came with a complimentary car inspection. Kept my car for 2 days and called to ask if it was ready and Hals response was that they were too busy to do the inspection, but we were free to get it since it is done. 5 months later one of my rear tires had a flat and came to find out the bushings needed replacing reason why my tire blew too early. After a month of debating with him and TireRack (since his shop was recommended on TireRacks website) he agreed to replace the tire free of charge as long as they install it and do a final inspection. When I came to pick up my car after it was done (mind you they only installed the replacement tire and redone the alignment again), Hal looked annoyed to see me and made sure to tell me with such attitude that if it were to happen again he will not replace it next time. He then had a mechanic show me the issue and has shown me the bushings that still need replacing and ALL OF A SUDDEN a trail arm that looked FRESHLY BENT. Don't trust this shop whats so ever.
