I am always on the hunt for places like this. Since I moved to the city, I have become a connoisseur of places in which to artfully sequester oneself. This place is firmly on my list. Everything from the different variety of benches, chairs, and pillows in the main area to the delicate mixture of charm and aloofness of the barista girl who works there adds to it's appeal. Sit in the garden. There aren't any power outlets, but there is part of a shovel. Sounds you will hear: The electric swell of the muni bus as it accelerates nearby Someone's windchime The faint murmur of school kids at recess a few blocks away The occasional chirp of the birds The momentary beating of tiny wings, as a bird lands nearby to inspect some maybe-seeds on the wooden deck. In other words, a perfect place to spend the afternoon. Come in the summer, when the sun is overhead and spend the day with a good book, surrounded by a small urban menagerie of flowering trees and the city itself. read more

I discovered a charming little caf today, the Bazaar Caf on California at 21st Ave. Very much like the caf near Jack's house, maybe a tad more upscale, (but still funky and cozy). I cycled over today, and maybe the gorgeous weather helped make a good first impression as I sat in the courtyard. The boyfriend was invited to play with a friend at open mic night here on Thursday. I'm never in this area of town and 20th & California felt like no-man's land to me. Especially at 8:30PM on a wet windy weeknight. We peeked into the Cafe and performances were happening, but we were early and decided to stroll. I kicked and crushed leaves under my feet in celebration of finally having fall, a real season, descend upin San Francisco this weird year. Most of this year has been Sping with Sporadic Summer. I hadn't seen rain since January. An East Coaster at heart, California weather just seems to fuck me up. After connecting with said singer-songwriter friend, we made our way down the tiny alley leading to the side entrance to enter the cozy little cafe. And it's little for the number of accousitc guitars that were there for the open mic. I distinctly remember being in this same cafe years ago, 2002, when I first arrived in SF. A musician friend from LA was playing and I treked out to 20th and California to see her here. This 4 stars is really for the open mic night. There is a strict "No Cover Song" policy which I really like and appreciate as it really spotlights original songwriters. It was a nice place to be on a cold fall evening. I go to this place a lot, because of its proximity to my house. Parking is always a drag, I've started riding my bike recently. I would love to give this place four stars, but too often it is a library. It seems like interesting people are always in there, but not a lively enough atmosphere. They do have live musical performances seemingly every night, which is neat, and there is a beautiful back patio area which smells absolutely amazing these days with the budding flowers. This is a fantastic, clean, quiet place to get work done during the day, and a great "night out" spot in the evenings. They offer FREE WIRELESS and the food is great. Food I had the chicken salad and the soup. The chicken salad was actually really really good; it was *real* chicken on top of lightly dressed greens. The soup was also yummy. The only caveat is that they were out of my first choice on the soup, they were out of their "famous" chicken curry, and they were out of something else I've forgotten (much to another patron's deep chagrin). They also have what look like amazing pies. They get them from Santa Cruz and they're beautiful. I have made a lot of pies in my life-time, but don't eat them much, so I can't speak to their deliciousness; but the couple that got a slice while I was there seemed happy enough. Atmosphere It's super super clean, with hardwood floors, great furniture, large tables, small tables, little couches and sweet little fixtures (pretty little table lamps and the odd curiosity). There's a large front room and a smaller room adjacent to it that offers a little more privacy, lower lighting and softer furniture. When I was there at around 2 in the afternoon on a Wednesday, it was filled with a bunch of middle aged men on their laptops with, generally, a single cup of cold coffee sitting next to their stations. I would imagine they could use more "eaters" - or at least people willing to buy more than one cup of coffee - during the day. I think that almost every evening they have some sort of entertainment, like stand-up comedy, open mic, music, etc. I haven't been there in the evening, but it seemed pretty popular. They don't allow laptop use in the larger main room during the entertainment. All-in-all, a great spot to get some work done and have a bite. Nice neighborhood, and decent people watching. read more

This coffee shop is great; nice decor; free wifi; quiet enough for work and of course good coffee. I think this is the first time I've written a review while actually being in the establishment. This is an adorable place. I tried to do work here once, and it didn't go so well-- low light, oddly sized tables and a few very loud children. BUT, there is free wifi! (Always good to know-- just get the password from the barista.) Even so, this is a perfect place to meet with friends or listen to live music. (Maybe you'll see me in there sometime, after I finish writing more than 2 songs...) They have a large outdoor garden area and serve food like garlic bread and curry along with the traditional coffee stuff. If it's not your "local", you'll probably leave wishing it was. read more

Decent place to grab a latte. Spent an hour here last weekend studying while the lady friend was visiting her father. Apparently, it's too soon for me to meet the fam. Whatever! I digress. My husband and I happened by this coffee cafe by accident. But, we are so happy we did. Cozy and real chill feeling. Two singers/guitarists performing but only had an audience of 4, and that's unfortunate because they're both very talented. (Im not sure how often they have live music). A delightful establishment, cozy and warm. Shame about the location, though -- unless you live nearby, it's a bit of a schlep to get down there, and there's not much around it to see or do. As soon as you walk in, it instantly has the feel of a place that's been there for decades. Worn wooden furniture, soft yellow lights, a comfy place to sit and read a book. I'm a fan of this local cafe in inner Richmond! During the day it's very chilled and nice to sit out in the patio; in the evening they have artists/writers/musicians here fairly often, some weeknights and most weekend nights - check their website for event calendar! Sometimes the place gets busy and service can be pretty slow (one time coffee came more than half an hour later, but they told me beforehand and I was not in a hurry). I also get their curry plate (veggie/chicken) a few times, it's pretty good and inexpensive (under $10). Books on the shelf like a mini library. I just loved the artsy vibe of this cafe. read more

What am I doing here? I can't even drink coffee. Caffeine makes me feel like I'm about to have a seizure. But I still recommend this quaint coffee shop. It is a quiet, woody, artsy place with a garden. The inside part has about 8 tables, with seating for 2, 4, or 8 people, including plentiful plugs and good WiFi. The outside area has maybe 6 tables, with enough foliage to camouflage your private conversation. There are no plugs. I have been here with people who can drink coffee without going into cardiac arrest, and they say it is good quality. Drink prices range from 1.50 to 3.75 for a large mocha. They have several good desserts, plus salads and sandwiches. There is also a live music theme, with some CDs in the back and frequent performances. All in all, Bazaar Cafe is a very comforting place, reminiscent of an old country house. It is so peaceful here that someone's dog was sprawled out in the back, just taking in the music and minding his business. He obviously gets what this place is about. read more

I have never headed to this cafe specifically for food, but have been there several times now for live music. Love it! The atmosphere is very friendly and artsy. They have a selection of books from Green Apple and CD's from local musicians available for purchase. The place just has a cool vibe to it. I've seen some pretty phenomenal musicians there. Parking can be pretty difficult in this hood (I once drove around for 20 minutes to find parking but was determined to see the show, so I didn't give up). read more

I was ready to get excited about some decent food and pleasant entertainment. On the way we walked by several restaurants on Clement and 23rd. All were busy. It was Friday night about 6:15 when we entered the Bazaar Cafe. Basically empty. Two people using their laptops. I "reasonably" thought that since there would be music at 7 PM we should come a little early because the place would be busy. Wrong, even on a Friday night. I asked for a food recommendation and was told that the chicken curry was very good. I ordered it and when it arrived it was cold in the middle - it wasn't left in the microwave long enough. It was sent back, heated up, and it was okay. I've had better. By 6:50 we had finished our meal and figured we could wait until 7 PM for entertainment. At 7:05 we were told that the entertainment would start at 7:30. I had had enough. I was disappointed with the food and now had to wait longer for the music that was supposed to start at 7 pm. I requested our check and we departed. Unfortunately we had to walk by the same restaurants we had walked by earlier which further frustrated my Bazaar experience. I love this little place! Inside seating is a little sparse but I only go here on sunny days where I can lounge about in the backyard garden. It is really very beautiful and serene. The people at the counter are pretty nice and will bring your food outside to you. They've got beer too! The food is kinda here and there. Paninis and veggie burgers are super good, but I had some veggie curry there that was pretty blah. Oh yeah and what's with that British guy who's always there with his BOOMING voice that renders my earplugs useless? There should be noise ordinances for cafes! read more

This is another of my favorite places to sit and read or write during the day. Cozy atmosphere, I love the fact that they support local music and art, and the back patio is great. Food is eclectic and of mixed quality, seems fine for a cafe. Haven't tried the live music at nights. I'm not often in the mood for an open-mike night type of thing, but its cool that they do it. I once asked a guy I had met on the Internet to meet me here for a first coffee/date sort of thing-- and as he walked in I realized that they were playing some folky/world music crap and I was drinking an herbal tea and the place just screamed out "HIPPY!!!" Which is not really the image I normally seek to project and up until that moment it hadn't occurred to me that that's how it looked. Anyway, the date went nowhere, not surprisingly, but I still like the place a lot. Maybe I'm a hippy after all, who knows? read more

Their Curry Chicken is surprisingly good for a cafe not specializing in curry. The portion size is good too. However, don't order the chicken sandwiches. I did once and it came with only a few, measly pieces of dry chicken not even enough to cover the bread. read more

Been to Bazaar Cafe a few times, but always think I should go more often. It's comparable to Blue Danube Coffee House (on Clement) for food and drink offerings and cozy, eclectic atmosphere. It might be less crowded on a general basis, but is certainly not a snooze. They have a full and delicious menu of breakfast/brunch/lunch foods (and happy hour too, although I haven't been there for that) at good prices. OVERVIEW This is my favorite coffee shop in San Francisco. The coffee, food, and vibe are both great. You can choose to sit in the warm and cozi inside with the eclectic mix of decorations including little dinosaur figures or outside in the serene garden behind the building. Not to mention free wifi that has a decent connection. FOOD Today I ordered a double americano and a caesar salad. The salad had the perfect mix of salad to dressing to cheese ratio. I had chicken added to my salad for an extra dollar and it was prepared perfectly with a slight warmth still on the chicken. YUM! In the past I have ordered the turkey w/ havarti cheese and cranberries. This sandwich is served on toasted bread and with pretzels. It is extremely tasty as well. If you are wanting something a little warmer I have also ordered the Jumbo Hot Dog before which is one of the best hot dogs I have ever had. It is indeed huge and they toast the bun! STAFF The staff here is very friendly and professional. After only coming here a few times they started to recognize me and even give me a compliment on my recent hair cut. They all seem to be very efficient and take time to make sure whatever you order- food or beverage- it is prepared to the best quality. Welcome to Bazaar Cafe - and the early 70s! Funky and cool, Bazaar Cafe has its own personality and identity. This coffee shop has a nice selection of edibles, from small meals to cookies - consistently good. Free wireless, and there's even a few electrical outlets for those with notebook computers. Bazaar Cafe also regularly sponsors live acoustic music, and most customers will enjoy the laid-back energy. Fans of folk music will like the song selections; don't expect Bazaar Cafe to play rocking' tunes anytime this century. (The music is almost exclusively circa 1972.) There are a few "single" tables, though the remainder of the seats feature bench-style seating. I loved the previous owners and think the new ones could be just as great, but the service is much slower than it was and me being vegan, my go to is the hummus veggie bagel (their hummus is delicious), but I've only been able to have it 1/4 times with the new owners due to various reasons (we ran out of bagels, we ran out of hummus, our hummus is frozen). I'm not saying these aren't valid excuses, but under previous ownership this never happened to me. I could come at 5pm and there would still be enough ingredients to make a hummus bagel, or they would run out and grab them. read more

I like the ambience of this place a lot, and I love the garden in the back. I'm not a fan of the music at night and I wish it were open earlier like a real coffee place. Unfortunately, I can only really give it three stars because some of the baristas have some difficulties with, like, actually making coffee. As in, coffee-coffee, not fancy coffee. My friends and I just left the Legion of Honor and were in need of some tea and relaxation and Bazaar Cafe definitely hit the spot. This cozy, comfy, kitchsy place had a great relaxed feel. There were zines in one window and guitars in the other. Several people were using their laptops on the free wi-fi that they offer. (There were cute little signs saying that if you want to use their wi-fi please only use your laptop battery and buy goodies to eat). There was a few big paintings on the walls that were really nice - reminded me that I need to get back into painting! Also, some nice stained glass pieces. Pretty eclectic artsy feel. My friends and I each had a cup tea which came in pretty big (and heavy) mugs for $2.00. There a decent tea selection and lots of other beverage options. One friend had a chocolate chip cookie dipped in white chocolate which looked really good, too. We stayed for awhile just quietly chatting but unfortunately, had to leave just as a group of musicians came in to perform live-music. If I'm in the neighborhood, maybe I'll stop in in hopes of catching one of their live shows - it definitely seems like a chill coffeehouse for a little rest and relaxation. read more

Atmosphere: 5/5: Feels like home! Comfy, intimate, and welcoming. If you miss family dinners, this is a great replacement. Service: 4/5: On one hand, I enjoy how laid back the atmosphere is, even including the service. Every time I have been in this place the workers are usually hanging out reading a book and I have to usually approach them to find out if they work here. i understand that this may annoy a good hand-full of people (so be warned this might happen to you), but once you decipher who is and who is not a worker, I find it just that much more of a reason why I like the place. It really does feel like I am coming home after a long day of work. Food: 4/5: Not spectacular by any stretch, but I enjoy the random choices. Where else can you get square pretzels with a sandwich?! Plus, this is a cafe, I am not expecting my tummy to be greeted with the world's greatest food. Specialty: 5/5: Superior in this category. I have come to several music nights here, and was absolutely blown away. My inner soul received a real treat. Not only amazing music, but amazing songwriters, and amazing people. I created a Yelp account just to write this review. That is how put off my friends and I were about this place. I went to see a friend perform on a Wednesday night. This cafe was decently crowded, we entered during a set and quietly found seating. Shortly after getting settle the barista came over (during a song!) and informed us that there is a 1.75 minimum to be in the cafe. I didn't bring any cash so stayed seated while my 3 friends each bought a beer. At the end of the set the owner approached me directly and asked "Now, what can I get for youuuu." I responded telling him that I was content and leaving soon. To which he told me that if I would like to come back and see this place still here I would need to buy something now. I felt as if I was being attacked. I left the place immediately because I was uncomfortable and waited outside for my friends to finish their drinks. The owner came out, stood 10 feet away and checked in on me. I understand needing to make a living and trying to keep the lights on but man, if you're owning a coffee shop to make money, change professions! Intimate places like cafes should stimulate connection and human relations and not make you feel like a walking dollar sign. Being money hungry is never flattering read more

Sometimes you just hit cliché gold and when that happens, boy does it make me smile! My visit to the Bazaar Cafe was EXACTLY the stereotype I had in my head of what a coffee shop in San Francisco should be. Sitting at the bar was the middle-aged white guy wearing a tie-dye tee shirt, eyes closed, nodding along to the music... at another table there was the black guy with dreads and a leather vest ... over there was the older couple, and I kid you not, the husband was wearing a beret. I mean, come on, did someone do the casting for this movie or what? The decor is a fun, hodgepodge of items collected over the years and gives it a warm, fuzzy atmosphere. I had a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup. Granted, it's kind of hard to mess that up, but I did enjoy it. read more
