I haven't had Korean fried chicken (Kfc) in a couple of years and my last experience was Bonchon. I ordered a half/half with Secret Sauce and Golden Original. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to handle the hot stuff. I also ordered the kimchi fried rice along with radish and corn sides. The original chicken was very tasty, super crispy, non-greasy and with a hint of spiciness. The secret sauce was a little too sweet for me, but delicious as well. The kimchi fried rice comes with a fried egg on top, still with runny yolk as well as little bits of chicken. I'm looking forward to ordering the other items on their menu. Went back yesterday and placed my order online through their website. Did not log in to DoorDash. No pickled radish again. But the girl at the front said they only give pickled radish to customers who phone in their order. Which is nonsense, considering I've ordered online several times before and received it. Korean fried chicken should automatically come with it, regardless of how you place your order. This is like an American hamburger place charging extra for pickles. So done with this place. Charging for a side of sauce, ranch or other condiments feels ridiculous, especially $1 for a small cup. 2. Not allowing additional flavors in an order. I ordered a medium wings and asked if I could get half sauced and the other have without sauce, and was told I need to place 2 orders of the small wings if I want it like that. Bb.q Chicken is such a popular Korean fried chicken chain both in Korea and globally (K-drama product placement really does work ahaha), and I'm so happy we have a branch in Pasadena now! This location is in the middle of Old Town, so it gets pretty popular on weekends. I've only gotten to-go orders from them so far, but the ambiance inside is very cool. You can order on their touchscreens in person or call in your order on the phone ahead of time. They usually estimate 20-25 minute wait, but both times I have gone, they end up not starting to make the order until later due to either being backed up with lots of other orders or technical issues where the order was placed on the computer but wasn't sent to the kitchen. So I actually waited total around 40-50 minutes the first time (in person order on touchscreen), and 30-40 minutes the second time (bf ordered by phone call, we showed up in person 15 minutes after calling, they told us they were going to send our order to the kitchen, at least the restaurant was not that busy at the time, so another 15-20 minutes before food was ready). They package the chicken nicely in these cardboard boxes shaped like treasure chests so nothing spills out. You get a small cup of pickled radish to pair with the chicken. The chicken reheats well in a toaster oven if you need to recrisp it up. I got the galbi wings (small, bone-in) the first time, and they taste smoky, sweet, and savory like ramen seasoning/MSG. The second time I ordered Gangnam style wings (small, bone-in), and they are a little spicy (chopped up jalapenos on top too) with a more savory sauce that's still a little sweet. Both were solid options, but I still want to try the cheeseling and other flavors to find a favorite. I ordered from here for pickup from Doordash, was pretty expensive for 2 people- about $50. I am mildly allergic to peanuts and there were no allergy warnings on the app. Got there to get my food and saw they had signs marking nearly all things on the menu for nut allergy. I explained that I am mildly allergic to peanuts only and am not bothered by food with 'traces of nuts' but would be bothered if the chicken was loaded with crushed peanuts or peanut butter. Nobody at the location could tell me to what extent there were nuts in the hot chicken, which made me realize they don't make the sauces there and it's all just prepackaged junk. Not great especially given how expensive it was. Decided I wouldn't risk it and asked if it could be refunded. The manager spoke to Doordash customer service and flat-out refused to refund the order while on the phone in front of me. Pretty dang good wings! The original wings were so juicy, they looked bland but not were they packed with flavor. They were just the right about of spicy and the chicken was so juicy. The breading isn't overpowering either so it was delicious and crispy! The Galbi boneless wings were pretty good too. I don't know if I would order them again as they were A little sweet for my liking but still delicious! I like the breading as well, it's more flakey than hard but still had a crunch to it! Lastly the fries were perfect, super crispy and the side order comes with a good amount in the basket! Only downside to the experience was the slow service. After the first order or wings came, we waited quite a while for the fries to come and then waited quite a while after that for the other order of wings to come. This was my spot for Korean fried chicken. I was recently displaced by the Eaton Fire. Having gone back up to Altadena today, I thought I would drop by my favorite chicken spot before driving to my temporary residence 25 minutes away. I ordered the honey garlic wings and the soy garlic wings and will say that the food quality has significantly gone down. Just like Amy L. stated, "the way they coat the chicken on the outside has changed and the taste is very different now." The flavor is barely noticeable as there is only 1 small brush mark on either side of the wing, the edges and tips of the wing are not coated. I called up the store and asked to speak with the manager. The individual who answered identified herself as the manager. She informed me that even though the pictures look different, this is how they have now been instructed to make the chicken. She called her "head manager" and the only solution they had was for me to drive 25 minutes back to Pasadena to pick up a "free" side of sauce. This is not a reasonable expectation of me, or any other paying customer. She said sorry but there's nothing else I can do. She went on to advise me that in the future, if I were to order extra sauce, there would be an additional fee. Needless to say, I will not be spending my money here anymore. Since this is my only form of recourse, I hopefully can help you decide to spend your hard earned money elseware. Bonus frustration points: If you order in store or dine in, there is a small side of pickled radish that is included in your order. If you order online, they do not include it and will charge you extra for it. If you order online through the app there is a customer loyalty program.
