This is my favorite place for breakfast in the city. Don't go here if you're looking for avocado toast or anything else that's quintessential SF. Go here if you miss diners and real, hearty breakfasts done well. I'm originally from NJ (diner capital of the world) and this is one of 2 places that actually knows how to do breakfast. Not everything on their menu is amazing (skip the omlete, their burger is meh) but the other things more than make up for it. What a pleasant place to spend a working morning! Lovely ambiance with cute, jazzy music and friendly staff. I ordered a cappuccino which was incredibly cheap by SF standards, nicely presented with some foam art and totally delicious! I thought the breakfast options were rather pricey but the size of the portion and the exemplary taste/crispiness of the accompanying potatoes more than made up the worth. On our visit to SF we came here for breakfast based on solid Yelp reviews and left very disappointed with our customer service. I ordered a "make your own" veggie omelette and a smoothie and my boyfriend ordered 3 pancakes. He asked if they served peanut butter and she replied that they did, and after asking another co-worker, replied that she would not charge us for peanut butter on our pancakes. Great. We were charged $30 and not given an itemized receipt, but I hadn't asked for one. Price seemed a bit steep for what we ordered, but I hadn't seen any specific prices for the items I asked for on my omelette, so figured that was pricier than I'd expected, even though it was just veggies, no cheese or meat. The smoothie was great and came out quickly. When our food came soon after, my boyfriend was served two pancakes, to which he immediately told our server that he'd ordered 3. Our server (different woman than the one who had taken our order) immediately replied that our order had been for 2. We told her that we had definitely asked for 3 and she did not apologize and simply told us she could make another pancake but that it would take 15 minutes. We said that yes, we would like the pancake. She left and returned a couple minutes later saying that they would make the pancake but that it would be an additional $4.66!! This was not only am absurd price but incorrect based on the fact that she was charging us for a single pancake order rather than the price difference of ordering 2 pancakes vs 3, which was a $2 difference. We said that no, we no longer wanted the pancake. The fact that this staff member seemed not only to not believe the fact that we said we'd ordered 3 pancakes, but then try to overcharge us after they made the original mistake of not charging us correctly, is poor customer service. To compound the service issues, my omelette had cheese on it, which I specifically requested without. I brought up the issue and was provided a new omelette without cheese soon after, but this is just further evidence that the woman that originally took our order was apparently not accurate for either order. TL;DR: Very disappointed by the lack of respect and service towards us as customers for a small ordering mishap that could have been resolved without blaming the customer. read more

One of my favorite San Franciscan neighborhood cafes. Staff is super friendly and food pretty decent with lots of healthy options. Love their Benedicts. Most of the stuff here are verysonable prices for SF standard. It also has free WiFi and you can bring a book or laptop to sit for a few hours. Gives the neighborhood a bit more human community feel than just some high-end overpriced restaurants which NOPA is increasing developing into. read more

I came here for the first time and ordered 2 Baja "scrambles". Upon getting home I found that these didn't have any eggs in them. So I had to go back to the cafe after already getting home and according to the waiter, these supposedly have 3 eggs in them. They then sent me back on my way alleging that there were in fact eggs in the "scramble". When I first got there, the girl herself couldn't even tell whether or not there were eggs. She kept picking at it with a fork and examining it closely. It's a scramble...it shouldn't be that hard to identify if there are eggs in it or not. Let's get a consensus here....if this is a "scramble" it honestly looks as if it only has 1 egg if that. I've ordered plenty of chorizo scrambles and this is pretty skimpy on the eggs (assuming it even has eggs). I had to add more scramble eggs after getting home. The 3rd picture attached is a picture of the same "scramble" that someone else posted a while back. You can clearly tell there are eggs in that one. Now compare that picture to mine... It was also infuriating to be standing at the counter and for the girl to be insisting that there were eggs. You can clearly tell from the consistency of it that it's meat (chorizo) and not eggs. They tried convincing me that the eggs simply changed color from the chorizo. Once again, reference the 3rd picture I found. Now that is a scramble. Won't be coming back here until they learn to do a proper scramble. read more

Almost 4 stars...... Almost. Came here for an afternoon bite and to do a little work. Ordered a Chai latte and a simple savory crepe. Worst Chai latte I've had in a long while, kinda tasted like slightly spiced warm water. The crepe was good tho, and the fries were actually noteworthy! I'm now drinking a Macchiato as I write this. Sadly, there are no bean bags here, but it's a decent place to grab a bite if you can get over that disappointment ;). I remember being very annoyed the first time I came and waited in a long line for a smoothie only to learn that the blender was broken (I feel like I'm always unfairly skeptical when I hear that line!), but otherwise I've had some good experiences here. I like the breakfast options, particularly the breakfast burrito. You can also design your own omelette. Sometimes it takes a ridiculously long time for your food to come, but if you're not in a hurry it's nice to sit at one of the outside tables while you wait. read more

Prices are reasonable for San Francisco, $3.95 happy hour for select beers (they have good stuff listed, not just PBR and Miller Lite). Delicious tacos, amazing crepes! I've lived in the neighborhood for 6 years and only discovered this little gem over the last few months... now I'm a regular! The tacos are amazing! Freshly made tortillas, delicious ingredients, flavorful sauces. My favorite are the chicken al pastor tacos with de arbol sauce. For a special treat, the citron crepe with lemon mouse is decadent and delights the sweet tooth. This is such a special place with great service and they've done a great job setting up sidewalk seating during covid. I highly recommend. Sat in front of his place all day on Sat July 2nd for the SF Art walk. My daughter Morgen had her spot on his corner to paint and sell her Art. Morgen painted the Bean Bag Cafe as a gift to Mike. since we were there all day witnessing the many customers going inside to eat we too ordered his amazing street Tacos, French fries and of course some beer! Tacos come with a choice of toppings! Cost slightly under $4. Bill for 4 was almost $20. We tried green sauce over carnitas and avocado over carna asada. Savory old style street tacos. But there's such a great variety on his menu after I saw the hamburgers ordered almost bought them too. Ordered a California Sandwich and a Beet/Spring Mix Salad (with added avocado). The food was great and fresh! However, one thing bummed me out significantly - the avocado costed an additional $3.50. For this amount of money, I expected a hefty portion on top of my salad, but instead was given 3 small slices (about 1/4 of an avocado). If you're going to price gauge, at least have some decency to provide a decent portion.... Also, be very prepared to wait a while for your food - service was especially slow. read more

I learned a few things the other day at Bean Bag cafe. 1) if you are a girl, and you walk by the pot shop on Divisadero by yourself...you will get hollered at. In the holla holla, thats right girl, ooooh, keep walkin cuz i like to see you leave, kind of way. 2) there are 250 cups of beer in a keg. Now, I don't know if that is true or not, but i was chatting with some gentlemen about how The Beanbag can get away with selling $1.29 pints of beer from 3:30 to close EVERY day. We figured they were selling beer for cost...to get people in the restaurant. Apparently their dinner crowd used to lack, and seeing as though their food is awesome, they wanted to get people in the restaurant somehow. You know at $1.29 a pint, they wont be drinking just one, and then by beer 4 or 5 you probably think to yourself...man I'm hungry, and then dine on some fabulous Bean Bag grub. Their calamari is the shit. Don't be fooled though. The imports like Stella....those are $1.40 a pint. Would you like to be a part of a contest that helps figure out the exact # of beers in a keg? Wouldn't that be fun? I thought so. 3) If you are a dude...particularly a kind one who bought me a beer for no other reason than he saw me sitting alone waiting for my drink date, and a crack whore is walking by...she will stop and talk to you. These are few and far between on Divisadero, but apparently she will bargain down from $20 BJ's to free. What a deal! 4) A lesson i learned a long time ago....you can recover quite nicely from a hangover at the beanbag. They have great crepes, salads, bagel sandwiches, smoothies, coffees, teas, and its all written on a brightly colored chalkboard. And in my world...if the restaurant has a brightly colored chalkboard, the food must be good. 5) I love my neighborhood...and it gets more solid for me every time i come here. If you're more into the daytime offerings, it's really a coffee shop that moonlights as a place to grab a few beers. They coffee isn't necessarily anything to gloat about, but they have a nice selection of different food stuffs. From breakfast scrambles to crepes, bagels, salads, sandwiches, etc... you're sure to find something you dig. And, it's all pretty darn good to boot! I'm rockin' the Bean Bag this morning! A Bodega Bay sandwich (tuna cheddar melt on panini) and a 12-oz. cup of drip coffee for $9.50 is keeping me happy. Free, unsecured wifi, owned by the Bean Bag, gets me onto the internet. They are piping in 60s music at a level low enough to allow conversation in a normal voice. I threw myself out there on the mercy of my friends to find a brunch companion (or three), and my darling Angelo F. responded. He suggested this place, and so I made my way from the hood here. In the car, I thought I was craving eggs, but when I got there I realized I wanted some french toast. With a side of bacon. And apple juice. And a cafe au lait (I was really hungry). While the french toast was decent but nothing special, that bacon was divine. I only got three strips, but devoured them so fast I almost thought someone had stolen them off my plate. Delicious bacon goes a long way for a review. Sure, how this place is laid out is weird, although it's not rocket science. I probably won't try one of their smoothies- they all have banana in them, which makes life difficult when you're allergic to bananas (weird allergy, I know). Charging $1.29 for a pint of Speakeasy Big Daddy is what i believe to be where the universe folds in on itself. After about $6 worth of beer (do the math, Chad) i could tell the universe was at least bending in ways i never thought possible. Things that were obvious to me made less sense, and things that were completely oblivious to nature and man, i felt like i conjured from the very nail bitten fingertips of my own hand. At about $8 worth, two theories...fuck that LAWS in my general universe were dispelled in almost one compound sentence. 1. "No, Mick....i have never had dreadlocks...what the fuck are you talking about?" 2. "Why would you think i hate beer? I love beer, Mick." At about $12 worth of $1.40 pints, i ran out out of smokes. Two more odd things happened. 1. I bought smokes, and a homeless man asked me for one, to which i replied "No, thank you." 2. I discovered porn. No really....i havent bought a porn mag in fucking YEARS, and now i see that they are packaging DVDs as FREE PRIZES in pron rags.....Imagine my glee, now imagine the gentle shop owners chagrin. Me: "Dude...how do they fucking make money?" Him: "......" Me: "Seriously...every goddamn one of these magazines has a DVD. You see this?" Him: "Yes i sell them..." Bean Bag is one of my staples in my life as a single lady in the 94117. I prefer it on weekday evenings where it's much more comfortable and relaxed than the somewhat harried daytime lunch/brunch crowd. The food is a step above the usual SF crepe/coffee house routine (but that doesn't mean it's anything special, it's just waaaay better than Squat & Gobble or Crepevine). I rarely deviate from the chicken pesto crepe or cheeseburger with big giant steak fries and am never dissapointed. The 1.29 happy hour beer special is killer and if I don't feel like drinking, either the lavender or ginger lemonades fulfill my endless thirst for beverages. The biggest drawback to Bean Bag is that their coffee is terrible. I mean - truly, truly, truly terrible. I always feel bad when I come in with my Peet's cup, but my caffeine addiction demands more. read more

The food I had here gets them 3 stars but I only had breakfast. And it didn't have me all hot and bothered in the least bit. But it was ok and the only complaint I have is that the scoop of hash browns/house potatoes reminded me of hospital food and tasted like it too. Under seasoned and bland. My vegetarian omelet was pretty run of the mill and you should probably ask for extra cheese. They're a little stingy with their cheddar. The location/space itself gets them 5 stars. Conveniently located (to me, anyway), the dining area is large and bright and there are quite a few tables. It's pretty much like every other crepe/coffee/breakfast place in the area except cleaner and brighter. There are 4 or 5 outside tables, surrounded by planters on one side. It's like a garden. But on the sidewalk. In Western Addition. The counter staff were very friendly and accommodating. They served us neurotic orderers with a smile and were very patient with my extremely difficult dining partner who pretty much needed his hand held through the entire ordering process. Because ordering breakfast is hard. Skip the baja omelet unless you're a fan of black beans (LOTS of black beans) mixed into your eggs. This chill place on the corner of Hayes and Div has everything a decent San Francisco street cafe needs - coffee, great food selection, and window front seating. This is especially important at least to me since sitting there and watching the crazies fly by sometimes is the highlight of my day. One evening I had a staring contest with a homeless guy who saw me sitting in the window. Although I'm not sure if he stared at me or was just in his own little world. Anyway - when you come here you need to try the BREAKFAST BURRITO, the FRENCH FRIES, and FISH TACOS. They're petty good. Look I know what it's like to have to work after being out all night. I could tell the girl taking my order was still coming down but thats no excuse for ruining my breakfast. I order an omelette with gorgonzola, mushrooms and an english muffin. What I ended up getting had orange cheese, mushrooms, onions and wheat toast. It tasted like ass and totally killed my appetite. I normally love Bean Bag - good food at reasonable prices - but today I experienced some of the worst customer service in all my time in San Francisco. A friend and I ordered the same customized bagel: whole wheat with cream cheese, scrambled eggs, avocado and tomato (not all too different from the other bagel sandwiches BB offers) and an iced tea. 25 minutes later, after witnessing a cook in the back pick our order receipt up off the ground, we asked a girl behind the bar to check on our food, to which she responded "it's almost ready." Apparently "almost ready" and just getting started are the same thing. Ten minutes later, still no food, we asked again and she gave us the same canned response. I don't care that the food is taking so long. I care that I'm being lied to. 45 minutes after ordering a couple of bagels and eggs, the waitress plops down in front of us two haphazardly thrown together sandwiches on two different types of bagel. No "sorry for the wait" or anything like it. My friend asks for a refill on his iced tea (he had planned to drink the iced tea with his food but we didn't expect to wait 45 minutes), to which the waitress replies "that will be $1.50." Amazed that he is getting charged for a refill of iced tea after waiting 45 minutes for the wrong order, he requests that the refill be free. She walks away. We figured she was either coming back with a refill or an explanation (either would have be fine). Instead, she just didn't come back. Nothing. My friend walks up to the counter to ask the manager, and the manager tells him the waitress doesn't have the authority to do that. Again, that's okay, but it would have been nice to know so that we could have asked the right person. So he explained what happened to the manager and the manager tells him it will be $1.50. Unbelievable. There are too many good restaurants in San Francisco to spend money at a place with such horrible customer service. read more
