Bear, located in the Stanly Ranch resort, embodied all the features of a high-end Californian eatery including local, seasonal ingredients, a modern atmosphere, friendly service, and high prices. I had a very mixed experience here--first of all, the service was a highlight, as the friendly servers showed us to our table and even chatted with us throughout the evening. Our water glasses never remained empty, and every staff member was super attentive. Second, we had some tasty bites including the Farm Vegetables, a crudite platter of raw and pickled seasonal vegetables including broccolini, cauliflower, radishes, gooseberries, carrots, and greens, all served with a deliciously creamy cashew-miso dip; and the Crispy Rice, which were cubes of crispy sushi rice flavored with a Southeast Asian-inspired nuoc cham (fish sauce), chilies, and coconut. We also had the Bison Tartare, minced raw bison mixed with horseradish crème fraiche, decorated with sliced and folded beets; and the Maitake, a side dish of battered mushrooms served with squash puree. While our first bites were tasty, the entrees completely fell flat. The Whole Trout was a butterflied, deboned trout, grilled and served over a lemongrass shoyu. Unfortunately, the skin of the trout was burnt and bitter, and the shoyu sauce was overwhelmingly salty. We also had the Lamb Ribs, which were grilled and flavored with pomegranate and pistachio--while I liked the flavor of the parts I could eat, the ribs too were burnt and turned out bitter and salty. When we alerted our server to this, she got a manager who took off a few items from our bill, but I felt that they could have been more proactive in fixing our dishes. Overall, while the service and ambiance were great, our experience with the food was mixed, and the menu prices were all extremely high for the small portion sizes (though I guess that's to be expected at a high-end resort). read more

Ooolala nice weekend away in Napa and we went to Bear - the restaurant located at Stanly Ranch in Napa! I'd like to note that I went once by myself for brunch on Sunday and once for breakfast with a group of 5 on Monday. Vibes/atmosphere: fantastic, super open air and summer feeling. encapsulates the winery vibes for sure. Service: wait staff was great, easy to flag down and always refilling our water. Wait times: Monday morning at 830am there was no wait. For sunday brunch I had a 1:30pm reservation for 1 and did not get seated until 1:45. Definitely make a reservation if coming at any peak times. Food: Overpriced for sure, but still good. Shakshuka was delicious and loved that it was served with focaccia. The waffles were good, very crispy as if deep fried. The chorizo frittata was also yummy, but overall it's just so hard to justify the price tag... $31 for shakshuka? ouch. Wine: I had two glasses of the Riesling when I dined alone and it was delicious. fantastic wine! In the end: while it is a nice spot to grab a bite while at Stanly Ranch, the food isn't so phenomenal that it justifies the price. Such a great experience from start to finish. We were warmly greeted when we arrived, and one of the staff even brought us a blanket so we could stay cozy while dining outside -- such a thoughtful touch. The service was friendly and attentive without being stuffy. Upscale but still approachable. This was our last dinner in Napa, and I'm so glad we ended the trip here. I had the crispy rice appetizer -- fun presentation with fish sauce and Thai chili. Glad I tried it, but probably wouldn't order it again. My husband had the bison tartare and really liked it. The quail I ordered though -- wow. Served with liver mousse, strawberry, and hoisin -- totally unique and full of flavor. Definitely the highlight of the meal. Wish we had gotten there earlier to explore the property -- it's gorgeous. There's a garden, fire pits, a spa, bakery, even an art gallery. Next time, we're coming early to walk around before dinner. This particular waitress didn't bother to check up on us periodically or even refill our water but she does check up on non-colored people often and makes chit chat conversation with them. So that's my overall experience with my waitress which is why I give this rating lower than my last experiences here. The service devalued the quality and taste of the food for us. The main entrees now had downsized to appetizer portions which was not like that the last time I was here, thus made it costly. The food was prettily plated but tasted mid. The service was non-existent after the whole crispy rice and tofu debacle. When we stopped by for lunch we were greeted by the Bear's sun-flooded and gorgeous interior with warm natural wooden finishes, soaring ceilings and greenery that give it an airy and quintessentially Californian vibe. Our waitress Rebecca was very kind and attentive. She gave great recommendations and we started off our meal with the farm vegetables (4.5/5) which were so fresh and included produce grown directly on the property (in fact Rebecca told us she had helped plant the watermelon radishes 3y prior). Then we tried the crispy rice (5/5) which was a standout dish, the jasmine rice was warm and soft on the inside but delightfully crispy on the exterior, the Thai chili and nuoc cham gave it a delicious heat and acidity which were addictive. For mains we chose the black cod (4/5) which was a smaller portion but I didn't mind since I wasn't too hungry and the fish was cooked perfectly. My dining companions had the pork belly (4/5) which was rich without being too heavy and the wagyu burger (4/5) which was very classic and technically almost perfect if it weren't for the cheese which was not quite melted enough. Overall each dish really highlighted its fresh and seasonal ingredients and let them shine without needing to hide behind overly strong seasoning or flavors. We finished off the meal with the sourdough ice cream (5/5) which was mind-blowing and this was one of the best desserts I've ever had, the balance of sweet and salty (from the salted caramel sauce that accompanied it) was spot-on and the crunchy texture from the sourdough crumbs complemented the smooth and creamy ice cream perfectly. Came in for brunch this morning for the first time- I love the property grounds! Very pretty! An area I'd like to explore a bit more when time permits. My sister-in-law ordered the shakshuka (which looked amazing) and I got the traditional omelette. The mushrooms were seasoned to perfection and the buttery fluff of the omelette was the perfect weekend guilty pleasure. The only downside was the two twigs that made their way into my mouth from the center of the omelette (I'm assuming from the herbs). Off putting at discovery, but not enough at all to reduce a star. I'm so bummed that I completely missed the ramekin of hot sauce in front of me until AFTER I finished my omelette. It was sooooo good! It had a hint of almost pepperoncini it felt like. I had to ask the waitress if they sold it (and they do!) so now I at least get to try it on my egg dishes (and otherwise) at home! Christy, our waitress, was never without a smile and made helpful recommendations when I was trying to narrow down my options. Personally expected a lot more from this place. It was very disappointing and thought the place was overpriced and definitely not worth visiting with our baby. The food is not so special. Omelette seems to be made with less eggs. Benedict is okay - but the greens on the side were so salty and not good. Stake and egg was also okay. I would not pay more than $30 for such quality though. The worst part was coffee. - latte, americano, cappuccino and flat white. They all tasted okay but I have never had such a cappuccino made in this way. Thought it was funny and took a picture. I shared that this is probably not the right way of making with the barista and she argued back saying this is the right way with oak milk... it's quite not professional but anyways. I can make coffee better unfortunately. Cappuccino looks exactly like a flat white... Ambiance is okay. The table is so not comfortable and tight less space. Lastly - not baby friendly. They claim that there is no microwave and would not warm up baby's food we brought. So I had to call their manager for help - then the food was able to be warmed up. We visited Napa last year and visited Bear for brunch and was underwhelmed, so put it back on our list to visit this year for their dinner service. We made a reservation for my birthday as we expected it to be busy (which it was). We stood around for a good half an hour waiting for our table to be ready. The staff was apologetic but it seemed that there was some disorganization with seating overall. I received a birthday card signed by the staff that was such a great personal touch. We ordered several things to try a little bit of everything and as much as we wanted to love this place, everything aligned with our first visit of being underwhelming. The atmosphere in the restaurant is beautiful, with a grand fireplace, open kitchen concept, and so many beautiful natural design elements... but it's loud. VERY loud. My husband and and I were yelling at each other for conversation, it was honestly comparable to a sports bar on a Sunday afternoon. Came here for date night with my hubby. I was initially disappointed when we arrived and had to wait a significant amount of time even though we were punctual with our reservation. Bear is an example of a restaurant that inspires without an (over) exorbitant bill. As someone who has begun deep diving into the world of food (and lately, microdosing vegetarianism) Bear delivers on their presentation and taste. Everything they brought to the table inspired conversation and even as they brought over our sourdough bread it was preceded by a delicious cup of warm broth. Drinks were fabulous and the vibe felt private and warm. This is what sold me on the spirit of the restaurant. When I asked what was in the broth they offered to provide me the ACTUAL RECIPE. Literally printed out on paper and handed to me. Never seen anything like that in my life. I didn't want to abuse the privilege but after tasting the squash I asked for just one more recipe. They delivered it once again, printed with measurements and clear instructions. As an ever-curious home chef, this sealed the deal for me. How brave and generous for a restaurant to accommodate me like that -- especially as someone who wasn't even staying at the resort. Without a doubt Bear has made me a fan for life and visiting the beautiful property was all I needed to see to convince me a stay there is in the cards. Napa, don't sleep on Bear. They allow dogs in the back patio seating area. We got the organic salmon with kale salad, waygu burger, and plain yogurt. Entrees were the black cod, the scallops and the vegetarian pasta, with sides of broccolini and asparagus. Everything was delicious, but the portions were quite small especially for the price. I have been coming to the Bear since it first opened - mostly for dinners for over 40 times. The food is always consistently delicious, service top notch and we are always treated exceptionally due to the service oriented staff. Fast forward to the recent meal: at the bar I cannot recognize any of the usual friendly faces. The last general manager also left and currently is in a transitional phase. The food were not the same: our old favorite dish (the lamb ribs) was not a standout more. The squab used to blew my mind but replaced by some sort of barbecue sauce, was a bit horrific. Even the Bisson tartare was changed from the fluffy rice paper crackers to a salsa chip (that the chips are tiny to even hold on to any of the bison tartare and the avocado overpowered the bison tartare. A lot went wrong at that dinner - it was sad and I know the Bear represents something creative and thoughtful top notch hospitality! I will come back but would wait a few months.... read more

We celebrated our anniversary in Napa last year and I absolutely enjoyed walking the grounds, meeting the farmer and watching him bring over fresh produce from the Garden to the restaurant. We loved this restaurant. Beautiful property and the food was sooooo good! We went for lunch and Therese was our waitress. She was so friendly and sweet and she really took care of us and made us feel welcome special. We had the salmon crudo, the burger, and the crispy rice. All amazing! Our fav may be dessert which was their homemade sourdough ice cream, unique and delicious. We will definitely be back to try their dinner menu! read more

This is my second time dining here. The first time was with my parents, my brothers family, and my family. We loved it! My dad, being old school definitely was concerned about the portion sizes and the prices hahah. The second time, it was just my family. The restaurant was quite busy as it was the weekend of bottlerock. Service was a bit slower, and it meant we had to miss out on dessert-good for me for not consuming extra calories though. We ordered a lot of appetizer dishes and each one was well thought out, beautifully plated, and tasted AMAZING. The staff brought out toys for our kids to play with while waiting for the food.
