Surprisingly good bun bo hue, and banh beo. BBH is better than most other known Hue restaurants. Mi quang wasn't good, however, meh.

The food here is excellent. It's actually one of the better bun bo hue that I have tried all around Orange County. The only thing is the establishment is a little bit on the older side. The lighting is a little bit more dim compared to newer and modern restaurant. But if you don't care much for the ambience, go give this one a try. Food is excellent. Can't complaint! read more

3.5 stars This restaurant has been bookmarked for awhile, so I decided to give this place a try. I got their #8 ($12.90), which is a combination of several dishes listed below: Banh Nam: rice flour w/ seasoned shrimp crumbles steamed in banana leaves. This is peppery and savory. 4.5/5 stars Banh Bot Loc: tapioca shrimp dumpling. It had a very nice chew to it. 4/5 stars Banh Beo: steamed rice cakes topped with shrimp crumbles, fried shallots, and green onions. The texture isn't as smooth as I'd like, but still decent. 3/5 stars Nuoc mam: the fish sauce that is supposed to enhance the food above. Unfortunately, the way this restaurant makes their sauce isn't acidic or sweet enough for this carby dish. Even the chili within couldn't save it. 1/5 stars I definitely think there are other restaurants that make a better banh beo, but this restaurant isn't the worst and, I would think, worth the visit. I went to Bến Ngự for breakfast and ordered the Mì Quảng Special. I wasn't too impressed with the customer service when they greeted and took orders. As for the food, the portion was quite large--I couldn't finish it. The meat and broth were decent, but the flavor wasn't quite to my taste; I found it a bit too salty. The restaurant is located in the Korean town part of Garden Grove. It's right across the street from Oc & Lau. The center has ample parking, but I can see it being a problem when busy as this is not the only restaurant in the plaza. The restaurant is a nice size and pretty much empty on a Thursday afternoon. I wished they had turned on the A/C and not just relied on the air from the outside to cool down the restaurant. Asian restaurants are so cheap when it comes to the A/C. But luckily, there was a fan above me so it helped. I ordered the bun bo hue dac diet for $12.90. That's a pretty good price considering that we are in the middle of very high inflation right now. The bowl came out pretty quick and at first, I was like, it's smells a little fishy. So I was already this is going to suck and be like bun Rieu disguised as bun bo. But after a few sips of the broth, I was like this tastes a little like my mom's. It's not sweet like other places and still maintains that beefy flavor. I then started eating it and was convinced that this is the best bun bo hue I've had in a restaurant setting that closely resembles my mom's. It's savory, beefy and the blood cake doesn't have a weird texture like at Nha Trang in Alhambra. In fact, this place now takes the cake over Nha Trang. Their broth is a little sweeter and saltier than this place. The only negative I have to say is that Ben Ngu has chili skins in their broth which means you better be careful when drinking the broth or else a chili skin will get stuck in your throat and irritate it. I wished they would just use chili oil like how my mom does. But other than that, I would definitely be coming back here for sure. Only bad thing is that I live in the Woodland Hills area and it takes 1.5 hours to drive down here on a good day. It actually took me 2 + hours to drive back home around 3:30pm. read more

Be warned when you ordered tray of banh bot loc tran from here, they will auto-add banh bot loc mung bean filling mix in without asking you. They won't switch out to the regular shrimp banh bot loc and will blame you for not telling them not to mix. If it your first time order from them, no way you can tell they have 2 kinds (unlike any other Hue place) and specified you only want the shrimp. Definitely poor practice of customer service, store need to warn or at least ask customer which kind they want if they sell 2 kinds banh bot loc. read more

We needed a redo of Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup), Banh Beo (savory rice cakes), and hubby was craving for Banh Nam (flour cake) since the last place we visited (Quan Hy) did not meet our standards. This has always been our go to spot because of the flavor of their food, freshness of ingredients, portion size of food, and customer service. The only down side is limited hours and they're closed on Mondays which is usually when we would plan lunch together (hubby's day off). When time permits, we do have brunch here on Sundays. Rather than deal with the typical long wait times in Westminster, this spot is always open and has tons of seating even prime hours during weekends. I wanted to try something different, so decided to check out a place I saw on a list of 21 places to try in Little Saigon. I ordered an assortment of things that were really fascinating texture-wise to me, lots of chewy and crunchy bits which I love. As I had not had any of these dishes before, I cannot really judge whether they are good, but I liked them. Flavors were not too strong, so I definitely used the fish sauce (also fairly dilute) and side hot sauces. See my photos and captions for pictures and names of what I ate. Ben Ngu is a good place to get Hue food without having to trek down Brookhurst into the heart of Little Saigon. I frequent this location when I want bún bò Huế (~$10ish). It's a giant bowl of spicy beef noodles topped with been shank, pig trotter, cooked pork blood, and pork loaf. Here, the spicy is laced into the aromatic broth. Combined with the tender meat, each bite if flavorful. I also like their bánh bèo ($8ish). The steamed rice cake has the right consistency - not too thick or thin. It has just the right amount of spring to hold up the ground shrimp, pork ring, and scallion/fried shallot toppings. If you're looking for a place on this side of the 22 that specializes in Hue food, I highly recommend Ben Ngu. read more
