Blueberry margaritas and blueberry tequila refresher

Came here for my birthday dinner with a friend. And Thomas (T.J.) was awesome. Loved his friendly service. I was craving a chicken parm and this one did not disappoint. And when I asked for a recommendation on a good drink, again TJ did not disappoint with Blueberry tequila refresher.

My wife and I visited here for the first time on a Thursday night. We got there early, about 5, and were second guessing our decision when the place was totally empty (and the Xmas decorations still up in March were a bit odd too), but the decor was fine otherwise, cloth tablecloths, napkins, etc. We ordered 2 Manhattans that were excellent. They came with a nice sidecar with the rocks. We skipped apps. I ordered the chicken parm and my wife ordered the gnocchi. Both were excellent and plentiful. The chicken was nice and thin and crispy. The sauce was great. We each only finished about half. We ordered grapenut pudding for dessert that was good. People started to filter in as we were there, so it didn't feel so odd. The place is huge, so I think it will always feel empty. The bottom line is that we'll be back.

These were the stuffed crab mushrooms. Disgusting sorry

But upon tasting their food, it was clear, 'Viola' is just another Americanized Italian restaurant. We started with an a la carte order of: 'House made focaccia, roasted garlic spread, evoo, craft butter' This was fresh and tasty. We then shared the 'Caesar: traditional romaine hearts, foccaccia croutons, shaved pecorino cheese. classic caesar dressing.' This lacked any flavour, the romaine was cut into too small pieces, there was no hint of garlic or anchovy in the dressing. But the most disappointing dishes were the pasta dishes: 'Fettucini bolognese, house made, beef, pork, veal ragu, pecorino, basil, calabrian Chili.' 'Scampi viola, squid ink linguini, shrimp garlic, white wine, julienned vegetables, preserved lemon butter.' Although the pastas were freshly made, their textures were compromised; both pasta dishes were not 'al dente'. In fact the Scampi viola was drenched in a dark gravy and greasy. This is just not a very skilled preparation of pasta. A fresh pasta needs very little sauce, and should be dressed very simply so the 'textures' can be enjoyed. I ordered the: 'Zuppa di vongole: fresh little neck clams, vino biqnco, fresh herbs, crostini.' But this dish was replaced by a fried calamari dish. This was well prepared, actually the only star of the evening. This restaurant may succeed on its 'blandness' but will never attract the discerning diner who wants and appreciates authentic Italian cuisine. ~tiaotse~

Came here before a concert at XFinity based on Yelp reviews. Provalone's is a very unpretentious little spot with a big menu, great prices and friendly service. Also, surprisingly fresh, quality and tasty food for what you might expect from the outside. Definitely a book that can't be judged by its cover. This is primarily a takeout spot and catering service. While we were sitting and enjoying our dinner they were loading up a large catering order for a customer and several people came and left with good sized orders. Clearly the locals enjoy it here. I went with the chicken parm sandwich. I expected a fried, formerly frozen patty and mediocre sauce Inna roll. What I got (for a very reasonable price) was real chicken breast, clearly hand breaded and fried, with a chunky, fresh, tasty sauce that ended up being a bit watery when put up against the cold provolone in the roll and made everything a bit uncomfortably soggy and messy. This may have been alleviated by baking the sandwich a bit before serving. Sandwiches come in one size here, which is a 12-in grinder. I would have ordered a slice as well, but the pizza in the case seemed to be pretty old and needed a refresh to be appealing. There is a very large menu, including pasta platters that include penne, ravioli or tortellini with meatballs, real veal or chicken. That's unusual for a takeout place with just a couple of tables. But it was among the many very pleasant surprises here. Good food, great prices and friendly service at a nice local spot with great menu variety. If you're nearby, I would definitely recommend giving Provolone's a try.

We grabbed seats at the bar, naturally, and the first thing we noticed was how clean the place looked. This spot used to be Midici, run by a great guy named Brian, and if you were anywhere near East Providence and in the mood for pizza, it was the place to go. The crust was always perfectly crispy with that Neapolitan chew, and the wood fired oven was put to great use across the whole menu. Toward the end of the Midici era things had started to feel a little run down, borderline dingy. Not anymore. From the dining room to the bathrooms, the whole place has had a real facelift. One note: the walls are a little bare. My partner, who is an artist, pointed out that bringing the olive branch motif already present in the table and bar decor to a simple white outline on the walls could be a really lovely touch. We ordered wine and were a little bummed to find a couple of old favorites no longer on the list. In the Midici days, we'd reach for the Tormaresca Chardonnay when we wanted a white, or the Cedar and Salmon when we were in the red mood. We settled on a Chianti and it was quite nice. On to the main event. My partner's usual here is the pesto pizza with ricotta, but a special caught her eye, the Lemon Ricotta and Arugula. It was the highlight of the night. The crust came out beautifully blistered, the arugula was piled fresh and generously across the whole pie, and the combination of big pieces of garlic, lemon zest, and actual lemon slices made for something really bright and satisfying. Honestly, just looking at it made you want to dig in. I went with the Chicken Caesar Salad Pizza, also off the specials menu. The outer crust was spot on, but toward the center things got a little thin and soggy, not quite pick up and eat territory. The toppings were generous but crowded in the middle, leaving the outer edges a little bare. The flavors were good overall, though I'd love more Caesar presence. Not sure what sauce was used as the base, but a proper Caesar dressing might be worth exploring for this one. It's still our favorite spot in the area for pizza, and the new owners have clearly put real care into the place. A little fine-tuning on execution and they'll have something really special on their hands.

The host seemed surprised to see us despite being right on time for our reservation but we were seated right away after a quick exchange. Our server Erik came right over with a smile and continued to be a consummate professional throughout the evening. I wish I could have him be my server everywhere I go. We started the night with some seasonal cocktails. The spiced pear old fashioned was to die for. Complete with a solitary large cube and balanced flavors it was delicious. Our table had veal parm, linguine and white clam, and lasagna. Each dish was fresh and executed perfectly. It's a garlic lovers paradise but never overpowering, in a way any Nonna would approve. For dessert we split a slice of limoncello cake. The cake was so light and fluffy it was like eating air. Even the frosting was light enough where it didn't feel like we were stuffing ourselves to finish it. It's a smaller place so it gets busy quickly and can be a little loud. I would highly recommended a reservation as I don't think you'd have much luck getting a table on a weekend. There was a bar area with some seats but it's probably not easy to get a seat there either. As the old adage goes, if a restaurant is full all the time there's a good reason why ;)

We have friends in the area who had heard of the place, but had never gone, so we made a reservation (2.5 months ahead for a 4 some on a Friday, so it must be special...) and finally got to see what the fuss was about. (Still wondering.) We started with what ended up being a high point, "beets and frites." A very interesting take with a lot of frites, not enough beets (5 slices under the stack), and about 2 tablespoons of the lemon aioli. The few tastes of the 3-part combination were great. The frites, crisp and soooo thin, were good on their own. The olive oil that came with the bread was very green (young), with a strong flavor but I was surprised that there was no pepper grinder. I had the (special) cod, which came with a lazy prep of broccoli rabe and OK potatoes. The fish was cooked well, moist and fresh, but I'm still not sure what the flavorless green topping was. Our table also had oxtail ravioli, which consisted of tasty little purses of thin pasta and nicely flavored meat inside. (Probably the best entree, and gained the second star.) The eggplant was unremarkable in terms of flavor of the sauce, and the veggies that went into it did not seem to be very fresh. For dessert, we had rhubarb peach tart and chocolate bread pudding. The tart was mostly crust and very shy on the rhubarb. The bread pudding apparently used Hershey's chocolate powder which was not a great flavor and left a grainy texture. The server was not very friendly, somewhat pushy, and insisted that we order the dessert when we ordered everything else. Allegedly, this was because the dessert is made to order, but we had the impression that it was to expedite our table time. Even so, with all that "careful planning" only 3 of the 4 entrees made an entry and we waited quite a while for the 4th to show up, even after asking. Overall, not a good experience and not a place I'll plan to revisit.

When we're craving something a little more thoughtful than the standard eggs-and-toast routine, this is where we land. The menu is creative without being over the top, the flavors are usually dialed in, and it consistently feels like brunch with intention. This last visit, however, turned out to be a bit of a mixed bag. We sat at the bar around 1pm, which is our usual move. The service was great. We were welcomed right away and had drinks in front of us in no time. I ordered a draft Blue Moon and my partner went with a glass of wine. Both were cold, fresh, and exactly what they should be. We started with the lemon ricotta donuts. These were delightful. The texture was spot on, tender and light thanks to the ricotta, with that perfect sugar coating. I would have loved a slightly more assertive lemon flavor in the dough itself, but they smartly included thinly sliced lemon rind on top so you could dial it up yourself. A thoughtful touch and a really nice way to begin the meal. My partner ordered the avocado toast for her main and it was as beautiful as it was flavorful. The sourdough had a great chew and structure, the avocado was well seasoned, and the sprinkle of cotija brought just the right salty pop. Bright tomatoes, pickled onions, microgreens, everything worked together. This dish absolutely delivered. I went with the Eggs Benedict Florentine, which I've had before and really enjoyed. Unfortunately, this time it missed the mark in a few areas. First, the poached eggs. The whites were a bit loose in spots and the yolks were slightly overdone. I know poaching can be tricky, it took me a while to master at home, but it was surprising to see the interior more cooked than expected while parts of the white still lacked structure. It was manageable, just not what I've come to expect here. Next was the mustard hollandaise. I was really looking forward to that punch of mustard, especially since I've had it shine before, but this time it felt muted. It was also looser than I prefer in a hollandaise. I love a good hollandaise, even better a béarnaise, and this one just didn't have the richness or body I was hoping for. Then there was the tomato. I understand we're not in peak tomato season, but even so, I can usually find more flavorful options at local markets and grocery stores. It appeared to be a standard beefsteak, and it just didn't bring much to the plate. A Campari or another variety with more natural sweetness and acidity would have elevated the dish and complemented the nicely cooked, flavorful spinach far better. On a positive note, the bolo was excellent. Such a great choice over the traditional English muffin and a perfect fit for a local spot like this. It had great texture and the slight sweetness usually balances the mustard hollandaise perfectly. Overall, Avenue N remains a place we truly enjoy. This visit just didn't quite live up to what we know they're capable of. I'm confident it was an off day, and we'll absolutely be back.
