We passed by the restaurant on Grant Road and decided to eat in. So glad we did because it was so good! Authentic Mexican food prepared hot and fresh for you. We have tried every Mexican restaurant in town and this is the BEST salsa we've ever had! They don't serve alcohol so if you're looking for drinks stop somewhere first. Our waiter brought us some beef soup that was phenomenal and all our meals were phenomenal! This place seems hidden, Other than making sure i don't past it on grant. The food is always fresh and hot. I like that they serve hot chips with homemade salsa! I tend to order the chimichanga every time. The rice and beans are great. Daughter got the chicken enchiladas and devoured them. If you want authentic homemade delicious food in a no-fuss setting, then this is your spot! I stopped in for lunch today to grab the famous pambazo sandwich - it was just as good as the stories I've heard! Delicious sandwich that was dipped in guajillo chili sauce! It's a messy one!! It was filled with potato chunks, and chorizo, and lots of lettuce - so full of flavor!! I ordered chips and salsa as well - you need 2 containers of salsa for all the chips. I got this to go, and only had one, and was sad that I had some salsaless chips. Salsa made my nose run, and was delicious!! The right amount of chunky/juice. The service - fantastic! I liked that the waitress ordered my sandwich with the kitchen before I paid to make things faster. This was a to-go order, so silverware and a much needed napkin was included, and she asked if I wanted salsa even before I ordered the chips just for my sandwich - nice! Bennys is a nice mom & pop's Mexican restaurant. I have dine in two times and love it! They offer a combination of Sonoran & also Potosinan dishes from San Luis Potosí (central-south Mexico). Most Mexican restaurants in the area offer northern cuisine from Mexico so it is nice that Bennys offers a southern variety, which comes with different spices and food styles. I ordered the Rene's plate which is a combinational plate of: beef taco, cheese enchilada, red tamal including rice and beans. This is a good plate if you feel like trying a variety of things but Bennys is also know for their gorditas & enchiladas potosinas. I love that their food is clean and by that I mean is not cooked in lard or with so much oil(s), grease and/or fat. I mean is ok with moderation but unfortunately other Mexican restaurants overdo it!!! They have a good variety of veggie-friendly dishes. Tried for the first time in January 2017 and have been back multiple times since. Authentic homestyle Mexican food. I had albondigas soup and the guys had posole (usually a weekend special) that didn't skimp on the pork. Entrée bowls for $7! Plus limes, shredded cabbage, cilantro and pico to add. Lots of happy oh-my-god-this-is-so-good slurping. If you have special request, be very clear - like no queso - or be sure to ask if you don't see exactly what you want - like chili verde tacos - on the menu. My bf and I stopped in here for dinner on a weekday. The waitress was friendly and served us chips and salsa. The chips were nice and warm and so was the coffee my bf ordered. I got the enchiladas and my bf got the poblano mole. My food was good and I like the style of enchiladas (they were not smothered in sauce and cheese). The draw back to my dish was the side. The enchiladas had a lot of beans in them and were served with a side of beans. My boyfriend didn't like his dish very much. This is not my idea of good Mexican food even with the entertainment coupon which made it the most costly of any place like this in Tucson. I am spoiled with good Chili Rellenos that have a bed of lettuce, guacamole, and sour cream. The one I got to bring home had none, and moreover was not good. That included the red sauce. Yuk. Hubby in-home hospice loves tamales and these were the worst ever, no olive , and they had the corn husk wrapper removed, thus there were chunks of Tomales in the carry out box. The one good thing was the glass of water, and the sparkling cleanliness of the place. Calling back to get the owner is a nightmare and first I was told that she would call later and then told she is out of town. I am contacting the Entertainment book, and telling them this is a bad place and also I may contact my credit card company and see if there is any recourse. Mind you even with the coupon of $5 off I payed more than at any other of the low end places that I go and they all have good food. Benny's is truly one of Tucson's hidden gems, might be my new go-to Mexican restaurant. My boyfriend and I got take-out from here for the first time about a week ago, and I was very impressed with the quality of the food and the service. The portions are generously sized (but not absurdly so), and the food is of very high quality. We ordered 4 entrees: nachos, enchiladas potosinas, gorditas, and tamales. It was immediately evident that the masa in the enchiladas, tamales, and gorditas was really special, with excellent corn flavor. The tamale was so good that it may have ruined all other Tucson restaurant tamales for me (including Tucson Tamale Co.). The enchiladas potosinas are unlike any other enchiladas in Tucson--the dish hales from a different region in Mexico--they are not doused in greasy sauce, but are full of flavor and are made out of the delicious masa I mentioned earlier. The nachos were awesome to behold, covered in enough toppings to serve as a entree in their own right. The service was exceptional. Even though we ordered take-out, they seated us as a table for chips and salsa (really good salsa) while we waited for our food. The food came really quickly, and everyone we interacted with really nice. Can't say enough good things about this restaurant, everyone should try it. read more

I was really disappointed that the reviewers said such good things about the place so I suggested we go. Now keep in mind, I'm a huge spice fanatic and my mom is kind of a bland gal, no spice for her! We went in, the place was crowded, we were not greeted at all, the man behind the counter did tell us to sit wherever so we did which was right under the tv, which was pretty loud so we asked if he could turn it down just a bit and he obliged. He left and didn't even offer to take our order, yet went to another table and took thiers. My mom went to counter to order for us. We waited about 10 minutes for chips and salsa, which the chips were nice and warm, but the salsa lacked any flavor at all, one writer said if was the best she's ever had in Tucson. ....whaaat?? I wonder where she has eaten becauae I thought thier salsa was very runny and ran off the chips and although it would be good for putting on our food which we did, it was completely weird to have such a runny salsa, is it thier way of saving on food costs? ? I don't know. My mom ordered an bacon breakfast burrito and she complained it was bland and had no cheese, with very few potatoes in it. It looked dry and kind of gross to me, I felt bad since I suggested the place. My carne asada was done pretty well and the meat was very tender and yummy, but again, it's like it was missing something. If I'm going to open a Mexican joint, I'm going to make sure the salsa I have does not run of the chip and I'll offer 2: a hot and a mild. It's yet again another Mexican joint I'm never going to give my money to again. Tonight we decided to try Benny's, primarily because of the stellar reviews here on Yelp. We arrived at 7 sharp, and we were the only people in there. Not a good sign. This restaurant is only a few months old, but one would think that some thought would be given to ambience by now. Benny's has zero ambience. Christmas music (!) was playing on the TV when we arrived -- in April. C&W music followed. The acoustics are terrible; you can hear EVERYTHING. All of this I am willing to overlook if the food is stellar. The service was prompt and polite. The restaurant was clean. Prices are reasonabie, and portions are ample. Unfortunately, the food disappointed. The salsa was pretty good but rather cold (straight from fridge?) but a little vinegary -- not as good as Rosa's. The chips were not corn -- they were those cheap wheat chips. They were warm, however. I ordered two cheese enchiladas w/ red sauce and a soft steak taco. My bud had the two cheese enchiladas and two ground beef crunchy tacos. The enchilada sauce was divine; I almost licked the plate clean. Unfortunately, there wasn't much cheese in the "cheese" enchiladas. When the fork cut into the enchilada it was apparent that they weren't stuffed much, and there was no "cheese string" of ewy gooey cheese goodness. The lettuce and onions on the side were very fresh, so no complaints there. My steak soft taco was tasty but wasn't very hot. I ordered it sans guac but it arrived topped with guac. The waitress took it back to the kitchen so it could be "fixed." I ordered some sour cream to go with it. The sour cream was very, very thin/weak/watery. It obviously had been diluted quite a bit. :( My friend also enjoyed his cheese enchiladas but agreed that they needed more CHEESE. He described his beef tacos as just "okay." They didn't look very appetizing from across the table. He said that there was more meat in them than the tacos at Cora's. His plate was heaped with lettuce but not much grated cheese, another complaint of his. He was looking for the hot sauce bottle (which was not on our table; we got the only table that had no bottle on it) to jazz them up because they lacked flavor. Total bill was only $25 (including one soda), but I would much rather spend my money at Rosa's where the enchiladas are ewy gooey with cheese. Rosa's red enchilada sauce is not as flavorable, but the ambience and better salsa and chips are enough to send us over there. Rosa's is the ONLY Mexican restaurant where I actually eat the beans. :) I am giving Benny's 3 stars for clean restaurant, good service, and reasonable prices. I hope they can improve the quality of the food because it is lacking. read more

Almost a 5! We almost left because there were no cars in the parking lot when we arrived at 6 p.m.. We are so glad we went in. The food is excellent! I had a shredded beef chimi and my spouse had the carnitas plate. Both were tasty and authentic. The chips and salsa were so good that I ate too many before the food came. The decor is sparse. The service was good. The music was outstanding. Two of our friends from Guadalajara joined us and they were very happy with their choices. No beer, which would have been a nice addition. read more

Okay, for food I'd give 4 1/2 stars but so far service is apparently not on the menu! My husband and I went there last Sat and split the Enchaladas Potosinas. We quite enjoyed them! Very good. But we waited a looong time for our order to be taken. I'd say it was 20-25 mins. I think it was almost 10 before getting a menu. The food came out pretty quickly. But the guy was obviously overwhelmed so much so that after I think two more parties came in he locked the door and put up the closed sign! The place was full but I don't think he has a very good handle on how to manage waiting on tables. (Sorry but you really need to prioritize getting people menus and taking orders before busing tables!) Since the food was pretty tasty we planned to go back. Just now I called to "place order for pickup?" He said "Uh okay, hold on". He set to phone down and never came back! So my husband just went over there to order and take out. First time there tonight after hearing about it on Nextdoor and seeing some great reviews on yelp. One of my favorite Mexican dishes is Albondigas soup. Had the BEST I've ever had at Benny's. Chunks of carrots and zucchini perfectly cooked. With free chips and salsa and a flour tortilla, half order was very large and would be enough for lunch. Also tried soft tacos, very good and Chile Rellano. Place was very clean. Service was excellent. I'll be coming here A LOT and getting the Albondigas to go on a regular basis. read more
