Really good portions! Service was friendly and food came out quickly. I ordered a chicken teriyaki bento box, gyoza, fair oaks roll and children's chicken teriyaki. I would say all were very good portions for the price. The chicken teriyaki was delicious and I really liked the Fair Oaks roll it had just the right amount of spiciness. The server recommended for me to try a Jspsnese soda and he was right it was delicious! I tried the clear one and it was the first time I tried a Japanese soda. I love how they advertise 50% off rolls! I'm sold! I know they're busy and maybe overwhelm but when we dine there; there's usually napkins and trash on the floor or tables that haven't been clean/wiped. Sad thing I forgot the name of one of the roll! We did get the dynamite roll and spicy dragon. Order the Dolsot Bim Bi Bap. Service was quick maybe it was towards closing and the other customers got their orders already. This is a small restaurant tucked inside Loehman's Plaza and also packed with delicious food. From rolls to Bento boxes, you just can't go wrong. The past few times I've been here I've made sure to order a Bento box and a roll. I also like their udon. Their employees are very nice and always make sure that their customers are satisfied. I came here after getting a recommendation from my local Golden One agent. I ordered a Bento Box #1 with an Unagi roll. The food was cooked really well and the sushi roll was impressively large. The teriyaki chicken had just enough sauce on it to where it had good flavor but not too much where it would be too soggy. The tempura was cooked to a golden crisp and what amazed me was that the broccoli was cooked for a little longer so that the inside of it wouldn't be soggy like it usually is at other places. The waiter, Kevin was a really chill guy and remembered to ask me for a refill when my drink was getting low and checked in with us to see if we wanted to order anything else. Overall great place. I used to love this place, would come all of the time I even got some of my friends turned on to this place, but over the years things have kind of went downhill . The last time I was there I saw the older gentleman that was in the back come out of the bathroom and I am about 80% sure he didn't wash his hands. I have been going to Lohman's Plaza for many years to support local businesses. Bento Box has been one of my favorites for food and service. This review is about customer service and treatment. I know they have a right to refuse service to some people but there is a proper way to do it or not do it. I brought my dogs to the Pet Express in the mall for their bathes. After that we had salads at Boudin's. We then walked our dogs around the mall. There is a lot of overhead shade. While walking I had the urge to us a restroom.As I walked by Bento Box there was a server locking up the tables. I asked her if I could use the restroom and she said yes (We had eaten there the night before) if she said no I would have gone to the Supermarket nextdoor, never a problem. I went in directly to the restroom did my business. Upon exiting restaurant I noticed a men and his son at the counter. I just glance at the cashier and he said are you going to order something I said no I had permission to use the restroom. He proceed to tell me never again unless I buy something, the the man and his son were still ordering and I felt quite disrespected. The customer intervened and I left the store. The server asked in the spicy level so i said make it spicyyyy. she noted that you want it spicy cause it tastes better, she wasn't kidding even with the spicy it was blandish nothing sticking out flavor wise. Then we got the crab wontons cooked awesome and yet flavor was meh. Then my wife ordered the special chicken salad, big and plentiful, chicken had good flavor to it and the salad dressing was good but lacked consistency. Seemed watered down a bit. But had it been thicker and more of it, i would take some home! Then we got the kids plate choice of chicken or sesame (grilled or fried) comes with side salad, rice, and 2 fried dumplings, these were really good (kids saw them and didn't want them, but i loved em). Same salad dressing on that one so same there, but the price for it and amount of food all together was great @ $6.45. So to some it up in a tiny box, food is edible, service was friendly, taste was lacking, price was a bit $$, if your in the area and want just something to eat like this go for it, just dont get your panties in box if it wasn't OMG goodness! read more

Delicious first experience. I picked up a risky 'to go' order. Tempura vegetables and California roll with added cucumber. This was the BEST veg tempura I've ever had, anywhere. Not a drop of grease in the go box. It was a nice assortment of veg, crunchy and delicious. The sauce was very good, slightly sweet but still savory. Nice. California roll was good also. Prepared as requested with the cucumber I'm accustomed to. Beautifully rolled and the perfect companion to the veg tempura. Note: it was, as expected, REAL crab. If you see my review of the 16th St. location you'll understand why I'm calling that out. Hint: FAKE. The sushi is good! The blue hurricane and the soft shell crab were great! I like that you can order rolls on the ipad but they have a lot of kinks to work out.It says they are open until 9pm. We went around 7:30pm but most of the conveyor was empty the whole time even though there was a good 20-30 people eating. The ordered roll is delivered by this little sushi mr rogers style trolley and that was entertaining. Three stars because service is slooooowww and empty conveyor, very hard to get drink refills and we waited a long time to get cash out, even after asking for the check twice. read more

First time I had been to this location in a few years. Food was ok but service was frustrating. It's really easy to provide great service, but the service here was frustrating and petty. We ordered a simple teriyaki chicken bowl, and my wife requested an extra side of teriyaki sauce. The woman told her it was an extra fifty cents for the side of teriyaki sauce. Teriyaki sauce is like a condiment, ketchup as an example, and I've never been charged anywhere else for an extra sauce. The real annoying part is when we got the order, the sides of sauce were super small. The one they provided was nowhere close enough to go with the rice bowl. Even with the extra, the amount of sauce was not adequate for the size of rice bowl. The second annoying part was with my change. I was supposed to receive a couple of dollars and 27 cents back. She asked if I wanted my 27 cents. I get this is a little trick to add up the money they keep in their pocket. I had intended to drop a dollar or two of my change in their tip jar. But between the petty charge of teriyaki sauce and the awkard question about my change, I made a quick decision that the 27 cents was now their tip, so I told her I did not need my 27 cents and stuck the dollars in my wallet. So good job, using your tactics to keep my 27 cents cost you a dollar or two. You also managed to get an extra 50 cents out of me but lost my future business. Great strategy! read more

Generic and basic flavors at best. Served its purpose as I was hungry however I didn't feel like it was anything special. Also waitress got our order completely wrong and ended up getting a spicy pork box that was more spicy and flavorful. I waited awhile to write this review because I was debating between giving Bento Box two or three stars. I finally settled on two for many reasons. I called ahead to order for pickup the Teriyaki Tofu Bento Box which online said it came with tofu, vegetables, rice and a salad. There was even a picture of it and it looked like a lot of food. Perfect! When I went to pick it up about 15-20 minutes later, I didn't look at it before going back to the office. Big mistake. It had four pieces of tofu (which was enough), a scoop of plain white rice (again enough) and a separate box with lettuce in it. No vegetables and nothing (except for a small cup of teriyaki/soy sauce) in the first spot in my bento box where the vegetables should have been. I saw a few pictures online before ordering and they all had tempura veggies included, so I thought mine would come with it too especially since I paid $10 for.... Tofu (which was tasty), plain rice and plain lettuce? I could have easily fixed the same thing at home for much less and with minimal effort. Where was all the flavor? So confused. They did include a tiny cup of teriyaki sauce (which was SUPER salty) but not nearly enough for the tofu, rice and salad. And I missing something here? All employees were friendly and helpful (when I asked for additional teriyaki sauce there were no problem) so no complaints there, but I will not be back because of the price and lack of anything special about the food. read more

Really the food tastes like any other restaurant that has "bento boxes" on the menu. Which I do not have a problem with when your out for a quick lunch. My issue with this location is the lack of space. I went to the restroom and found that this establishment has a storage problem because not only was there the usual bathroom amenities like a toilet and a sink there were boxes of guest checks, a dolly and a pile of jumbo size rice cookers!! I am not a CDC expert but I do not think that It is a good idea to store anything that will be used in the kitchen in a bathroom shared with the public. Major turnoff. read more

I came by just before closing, and they seated us anyway, which I thought was very nice and unexpected. Not many places on this strip let you in if you arrive 30 min before closing. Their rolls are good, but I was most taken aback by the presentation. I'm not sure if they always do this, but the rolls came out in a lovely heart shape! Overall, the rolls are good, but keep in mind that this place is more like a "fast food" Japanese restaurant. The pieces of fish on the rolls are smaller than what you might see at other places, but it's the perfect place if you're looking for something a little cheaper but still satisfying and filling. I've noticed that some of the negative reviews on here are based on comparisons to nearby Japanese restaurants that are within a completely different price bracket. For the price, it's really not bad. In terms of the ambiance, it's a quiet little place--not at all like their bigger location downtown. One of Bento Box's strengths is its variety and the lunch and dinner combos you can order. Don't know if you want tariaki or sushi? Get Box #1 with both and save the trouble of deciding. Never tried sushi before and you want to start with something safe? I'd grab a California roll (fried is a great option) and then later try Tempura or Dynamite rolls. Bento Box also serves rice bowls, ramen, udon, and more. No matter what you choose service is going to be pretty quick. Recently it only took 10 minutes for me to grab my take-out when I was expecting something like 16-20. Decor on the inside is notably cute. I had the Bento Box #1 which included teriyaki chicken, steamed rice, mixed tempura, salad, and got to choose one 4 piece roll from the basics menu. The chicken was well marinated, moist, and the roll was delicious. I'll probably go back and try a few different rolls here. Salad, rice, and tempura were good, but I don't feel like it would be really hard to screw those things up! CONS: SERVICE: The service was nothing spectacular.. I was excited to try this new place and being the outgoing person that I have been known to be, my attempts at small talk with the servers was shot down. I told the server, "This is my first time here, we're excited to try it!" To which the server was not impressed and less than enthused lol. So if you're on the go, Bento box gets your food out quick. The servers are very attentive. For the food.....it's your average sushi spot that will satisfy your hunger. There are lots of yummy smells in the plaza, but Bento Box aromas won my stomach over. The other two locations in midtown aren't exactly anything to write home about, but this location is worth the Fair Oaks traffic. The food is served swiftly, placed at the table steaming hot and smelling incredible. While they have decent sushi, the pan fried noodles and udon is where it's at! The noodles we order this time around were beyond delicious. Not too salty, full of flavor, and the meat was tender. The veggies are perfectly cooked and mixed with the side of rice, the whole meal comes together so nicely. The place itself isn't the Ritz Carlton or anything; but they keep the place clean. I feel really conflicted writing this review. Let me start by saying the staff was absolutely LOVELY. I have no complaints there. My husband recommended that we come here because he loved the jalapeño bombs, hadn't had them for a few years and was craving them. We ordered the jalapeño bombs and mushroom bombs for my husband and the honey chicken rice bowl for me(based on an employee's recommendation). The honey chicken was DELICIOUS. But when my husband bit into his mushroom bomb I could see something was up, he managed to swallow it with great difficulty and then attempted to switch to his tried and true, the jalapeño bombs. Instantly I could tell these were not what he was expecting. These were not the same bombs he ordered previously, they were super overstuffed and OVERPOWERINGLY FISHY. He couldn't handle them and was concerned they had turned. Normally we'd just leave them on the table but the smell combined with the aftertaste was turning my husbands stomach. We called one of the staff members over who confirmed that they looked different than they normally did and offered to have them remade. We declined this offer because it seemed like the seafood had either turned already or was on the brink of turning and whoever made them was attempting to get rid of what was left of the batch by over cramming the bombs. The staff member we spoke to was very sweet and apologetic and we appreciated the offer to have them remade, but really the only thing that would have repaired the situation would have been a refund.
