In all the years I have been to Falmouth and back, I have never gone to Betsy's. I have seen it there, but always opted for something else until a month ago. Before a baseball game there, I was looking for something different. The one thing I find with diners are that you usually have too many choices. Good, but bad for me. Eventually I would decide on the turkey wrap. Enough to box up and take a half home later. Both times, both weekends, same booth, same server, same turkey wrap ordered. I wanted to try the Saturday special pot roast but resisted because I knew the wrap would be good for two meals. I can't say anything for the breakfast there, so hopefully I will be back another day to try it. read more

Ah, Betsy's. My hometown diner. Sigh. The food is very greasy. I mean, the place has a neon "Eat Heavy" sign. I wouldn't suggest eating here on a regular basis--you might die of a heart attack within two weeks. However, for the occasionally craving for a greasy grilled cheese, a blue plate special, or a mile-high piece of lemon meringue pie, this place is great. Plus, it's kitsch-tastic and the waitresses will call you "hun." P.S. Do not eat the eggs unless you really really really like grease. I personally cannot handle them. read more

I love diners. Especially for breakfast. But. Not this one. We were seated right away (party of 3) on a Sunday morning around 9:30am. Our server seemed so unhappy to be there, never saw her smile once, and she didn't have any energy. Our food came rather quickly, and the pancake special was decent but not memorable. Epic Fail! The worst decision of our 4th of July weekend was to come to Betsy's. 10-15 minute wait to get coffee. An hour wait before the food was served cold. My daughter's order, after being told when she ordered could not include a substitution, never even came! Several tables who were seated after us had eaten and left before our meals were even served. We entered at 9:30, in plenty of time to eat and catch the 10:45 ferry right? Um, no, we barely made the noon ferry. The waitress said they were bringing in another cook. We went here for breakfast a couple days ago. Nothing special here. Service was slightly below average. The food was nothing special. Just go here to have a standard breakfast and don't have high expectations. The breakfast potatoes looked and tasted like they were just sitting on the griddle all morning - mushy/soft and greasy. My egg sandwich was a sloppy mess with half the egg off the English muffin and looking like it picked up bits of grit from whatever was cooked on the flat-top beforehand (tasted like peppers). The server did not make many stops by the table so we ended up getting extra napkins and condiments ourselves from the nearby server station. And they are strict about the timing of when lunch starts. It was 11:20a and they say that lunch service doesn't commence until 11:30. So, when I asked if I could get something off the lunch menu - thinking 10 minutes wasn't that big a deal - it was a flat-out "no". Not 'hey, order up some lunch and I'll put the ticket in in five minutes'. I wasn't wanting special treatment. Hindsight 20/20, I guess I should have sat there and waited 10 minutes and ordered lunch at 11:30. There are many other options around town. We won't be going back. read more

Really a disappointment. Went for lunch on Saturday. You'd think they'd have the "A" team working but the cheese omelettes (we ordered 2) didn't have enough cheese on either. Coffee was marginal. Cmon, a breakfast and lunch place with watery coffee? Kids each got chocolate chip pancakes. They were rubbery/hard to cut and majorly skimped on the chocolate chips as well! This is definitely the best breakfast place around. The menu is extensive for breakfast & lunch & the prices are very reasonable. They have a good children's menu and they give coffee refills as needed. some people say the waitresses are a little harsh, but the place is usually very busy and so are they. What a ripoff!! I ordered ONE blueberry pancake, short stack of buttermilk (3 in a stack) and 2 coffees. 17.05. My brother says he goes a few times a week. Gets 3-4 eggs, bacon, 3-4 sausage links, home fries/toast and coffee for 6.95. I will NEVER go back personally. They are being taken over by talk of the town so I'm sure the prices will escalate. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit! Lunch was great! They have some of the best hot dogs you will ever eat. And the American Chop Sewie was wonderful. Just like grandma used to make. The waitress had the personality of a postage stamp, but aside from that, the food was excellent. WONDERFUL, thick cut sweet potato fries. All the food came out of the kitchen piping hot and wonderfully flavorfiul. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone visiting Falmouth. If you like greasy food and small portions, you'll love Betsy's. Our waitress was friendly. The kids pancakes were fine. The rye toast was great.....if it hadn't been drowned in butter. The homefries were......edible. Again - if you like really greasy homefries? You will love Betsy's. I'm guessing the portion size is based on "there is lots of grease, so 2 tablespoons of homefries is plenty." I ordered the two egg, homefries, toast, bacon. Gave the bacon to my kids - it was totally overcooked.....and....yep, you guessed it. In a puddle of grease. I got one tiny egg, not two. Hey, communications errors happen. Not the waitresses fault, not the cooks fault. It's more of a "dozens of tiny things gone wrong" than a major screw up. I didn't have to use the restroom. From the horror stories in other reviews, I don't think I want to ever see them, or the kitchen you can view on your way there. On the plus side? Staff was friendly, the wait was less than 2 minutes, the tables and cutlery were very clean, and the décor was authentic. Too bad the food was mediocre. If I ever eat there again (and I may, the kids liked the pancakes and ate every scrap) I'll just order 2 sides of rye toast with "light butter". Because their rye bread is awesome - or it would have been if I could have wrung out 90% of the butter they put on it. read more

I cannot believe how boring the food is here. My standards must be awful high. I had an omelette with ham, onions and green peppers, and the peppers and onions were raw, the eggs were absolutely flat with a little bump on the fold where the filling was. Three eggs with a quarter cup of finely chopped filling?? Then the e-muffs. There was something oily on them, but it didn't taste like butter, and they weren't particularly hot, or crunchy. The coffee was OK, I'm no conoisseur. It wasn't brown water like Dunkies. Tasted like coffee. The home fries would have been OK if they'd been cooked in butter, but I think homefries should be like a half inch square, not big chunks. The sign says Eat Heavy and I expected heavy - butter, cream, large portion. And don't get me started on the noise level. Had to yell to be heard by my companion right across the table. Just came from here. My omelet came and it looked awesome. That was until I found a long gray hair in my food. Needless to say this ruined our breakfast. One of my friend then couldn't eat hers and the other barely could either. They only took my meal off the bill, umm really I didn't even eat it. UPDATE: I've pushed the stars from 4 to 5 because really, as far as diner fare goes, this truly IS as good as it gets. I went again the other day before leaving Falmouth and the Corned Beef Hash was fantastic. Compare this homemade corned beef hash to that which I got at South Street Diner in Boston. Betsy's is SO MUCH better. Go for: Corned beef hash, two eggs, toast and home fries for $7.75 and you won't regret it. An authentic diner serving home-cooked meals with very friendly waitstaff. It's been a long time since I've been to a dinner dripping with so much authentic character and a completely original interior. I only wish the food and service matched it. Our waitress throughout our meal was having an escalating fight with the cook which involved yelling and some swearing. Our waters went empty for long periods of time and she bad mouthed the cook to us as we ordered our food. Our food all came at different times and mine cold. The food was greasy and mediocre. If you could get rid of all the wait staff and just keep the chef, this would be a pretty good diner. As a year-round resident, my husband and I like to find places we enjoy that have decent burgers, fish and chips, and onion rings. As I start work early in the morning, I usually want an early-bird special for dinner and I guess I should have gotten a clue when we would consistently be the only ones to be in the diner after 3 PM. I put up with a lot of crappy service - no refills, attitude, indifference because the onion rings were awesome. During the summer, I brought my mom and her sister. They grew up with diners like Betsy's and really enjoyed the decor and such. Too bad the waiter couldn't be bothered to serve us. When I have to get my own menu after being seated by someone (possibly the owner) and then have to ask for silverware, water, refills, syrup, napkins... Wow, I like this place so much better know that smoking is banned from MA restaurants. I used to avoid it because it was too smokey. On a recent visit, the service was fast and friendly. I really enjoyed their sweet bread french toast-Delicious...wish they had real maple syrup. Then I would have rated it perfect. Standard fake maple Syrup though. It's a diner, cool vintage decor of course. Worn out and not very clean. The friendliness you would expect from people who make their living here is completely absent! Very short with people, if you can't clean off a table because someone sat down... how have you functioned at all! I felt very bad for the couple who was willing to take counter seats, were scolded for approaching them, and waited even longer to be sat at a four-seat table. But worse was the group of 4 that was up next that now had to wait for a table for four! Laughable but here is where having control issues make you look stupid! read more

We had been in Falmouth for 6 days before we found this cafe. We had fried eggs ( over easy, just like we ordered), Ham Sausage, and Bacon. It was very good! The only thing we missed was Sausage gravy over buscuits. ( we're from the South). We returned two times, and will try to go back one more time before we leave. Only complaint is it is VERY noisy.
