Sauce tastes like fermented tofu, very common in Asian. Worth to try. Com Nieu Bo Luc Lac: English said shaken beef, thought would be beef fried rice or something but came to be shaken beef plus rice lol. Beef is very tender kinda like medium rare, rice cooked with some oil so looks yellow but smells pretty good and adds a flavor to it. The vegetables under the beef are very interesting. Not something usually eat but with the sauce it's very refreshing especially eating with the beef. Tom Xao Dax Biet: sauce is perfect. When you are eating the shrimp head, every bite you eat it's full of sauce, very nice. Lau Ca Tam: fish hotpot, it came at the very end we were like pretty much full. It came uncooked, need to wait for it to boil. It has fish sauce inside so smells a little stinky. Really like the fish, has a lot fat, very chewy and tender. LOVE LOVE LOVE this restaurant. They serve some mean Vietnamese dishes that are considered somewhat specialty -ie the baked fish, snails, and hot pot. I would say their fish is the most popular dish. It comes with a hugeeeee portion that has other competing Vietnamese restaurants gunning for business. I salivate over the accompanying sauces that come with: spicy fish sauce, the brown-ish shrimp/pineapple fish "stank" sauce. Upon request, they can give more Thai peppers that are sliced and whole (they just get me). Last but not least it also comes with a bed of greens, pickled vegetables, cucumbers, and jicama. Some dishes my friends and I enjoyed are the fried frog legs, fried quail, and garlic butter snails. Their beers are reasonable- about $2.50 each. Last but not least I love their polite staff. On Christmas day, I tried to get myself over to Ngu Binh in the same complex, which my friend had recommended. The line was at least an hour long at 2pm, so we ducked into this nearby, nearly empty restaurant. Turns out it said closed on Yelp when it wasn't :O Lucky for us because I'm sure there would've been a line otherwise - it was absolutely amazing. I was surprised when I didn't see the traditional offerings I've come to associate with Vietnamese food - pho and the like. My friend had recommended that I get the grilled catfish at a specific restaurant, but since I've never had it and I saw it on the menu here, we opted to get it - $27 for the small catfish and all the accoutrements (rice paper rolls, bunches of fresh herbs, vermicelli, and julienned veggies). Small was definitely a relative word; it was the smallest size, but it would've been enough food for 3 people. Raymond and I were starving because it was pretty much 3pm by the time we got our food (and we had been on a flight all day from NYC), but we could not demolish it despite how much we ate. The catfish was spectacular - fresh, tender and grilled perfectly on the inside and deliciously deep fried and crispy on the outside. Without the sauce, the catfish summer rolls tasted equal parts healthy and delicious. I could eat this every week. With the sauce, however, it was truly divine. The two sauces were really different but both incredibly flavorful - bordering on pungent - in their depth and complexity. I've never had anything like it. It was a delightful first meal in LA, and I immediately started looking for this in NYC. Madame Vo BBQ just opened with a grilled catfish on their menu (the only place with it) for $50+, so this was a total steal. Wish you'd come to NYC :p Service was also great; I had a large bag full of homemade macarons that I needed to keep frozen, and they were great about accommodating me and putting them in the freezer for me. Bad service. Would not come back nor recommend this place. Other tables who came after us got served before us. We had to flag down a waiter to give us menu and take our orders. We ate all of the food that were brought out and waited at least half an hour only to be told kitchen was closed and they couldn't fulfill two of our orders and that we had to wait some more for the kitchen to assemble the hotpot at the last minute. Ordered two large catfishes Togo last week. Called it in and they told me it would be about 20 minutes, and I didn't get there for about 30 minutes and still had to wait another 10 minutes. Not a big deal but wish it was ready to go when they gave me that time. The fishes were neatly wrapped and all of the veggies, sauces and noodles were in a bag. Opened it up and the veggies were fresh and they give you a good amount. The noodles were good and the dipping sauces were good as well. Fave was the mam me sauce I don't eat the other one. Fish was nice and crunchy but a little small for a large. Was expecting it to be bigger but it was delicious and I like that the fish wasn't mushy compared to other places. I enjoy their seafood selections. An order for their catfish is a very good choice when you have at least 3-4 people in your party. This item is also a great item to buy for a potluck, they have a variety of sizes to choose from. The catfish comes with vegetables, sauces, and spring roll paper. We came for the ca nuong ga gion (baked catfish), and honestly, it was dry and overpriced. I believe it was $50 for the medium size. I shall refer you to Nam Giao on Brookhurst/Westminster, which is my family's usual go-to. On top of the not-so-great food, the service is extremely weird. We were a party of 4 that got charged 18% gratuity. They also resisted really hard when we asked to be seated at the table with half booth, half chairs (I was eating with older folks and one really wanted the freedom of space/movement with the chair and the other really wanted the booth to support their back/for comfort). My aunt and uncle came at opening, 11am and ordered immediately. My dad and I arrived later, which was when the seating switch was requested and they REFUSED. Multiple times (old people didn't hear the first request and follow-up question e.g. "can we move there?" "can you split the table?"). They said the table was meant for 6 and we were a party of 4. They said it was going to get busy later and they needed to reserve the table for larger parties. It was Monday lunch time. When we left the restaurant at 12:45pm, only one other party was eating lunch there. Essentially, we were there for almost 2 hours and they had 2 seated customers. They said they couldn't split the tables (it was a 4 seater and 2 seater pushed together) because it was already set up that way.  They said a lot of bullsxxt. My aunt tried to pay ahead of time so she could beat my dad out (the asian elbowing for the check) and the server refused. We ran out of one of the dipping sauces and as the server never checked in during the meal, had to flag to get a new one. That, I'm kind of fine with cause it's Asian service standards, but the seat change refusal still gets my goat. I kind of see why they charge automatic gratuity of 18% now, cause otherwise, they would probably see a lot of 0%. read more

This place is used to be great for foods but recently the quality of the food is not that great although the prices increased. The portion of the food is getting smaller and smaller. We did order grilled catfish over the phone at least 15 minutes prior our arrival. However, when got there and asked for it, one girl told us it's almost done but 20 minutes later, we didn't see it coming so we asked another guy, and he told us let him check with the kitchen. As a result, they didn't get our order so he told us to wait for another 25 minutes. What's the heck? While we were waiting for the grilled catfish, we ordered some other dishes. Why I mention that, well because other than get our order, deliver food, and give us the bill, the server did not come back to check up on us. As for the food, it is hit and miss.
