They should consider putting one in this area but I'm assuming they wanna keep small business alive, YET AND STILL the person who works in there is pretty dry and the garlic bagel taste kinda weird. I've had Big Apple bagels twice. The first time they were great, and the second time I think we just got a bad batch, unfortunately. The bagels were dense, were shaped more like buns (no center hole), and they were rock hard the very next day despite storing properly. I'm willing to try again at some point. I've eaten here on two different occasions and love it! Their bagels are probably the best I've eaten. Light and not too heavy. The staff is friendly and helpful and the place is very clean. Was searching for a good bagel spot near San Leandro and came across Big Apple Bagels. My first visit was awesome because the owner is a kind elderly fella who made good convo and told us which bagels were fresh out the oven-great experience and breakfast bagels were delish. Second time around.. his employees were rude and very dull. It seems like they prep the bagels by JUST microwaving meat and eggs etc because they get done way too quick and aren't as warm as they should be. I will only return here for their fresh bagels and delicious muffins! Three small muffins for $1 ! I couldn't beat that ! My fav is the apple pie muffin so good! read more

My 3rd time here trying out all sorts of different flavors bagels. I have to say, each one has it's own special taste. I simply like the Jalapeno and cheddar. They give quite a good amount of cream cheese. The staffs are super friendly there. Will definitely come back to try more. read more

I no longer live in the Hayward/Castro Valley area, but when I am in the neighborhood I stop by Big Apple for a cheese bagel and cup of coffee. The staff is friendly and helpful and the bagels are delicious. Each time I go, I tell myself I will order something new, but I consistently stick with the cheesy bagels (asiago or cheddar) because they are so satisfying. This is not a true bagel place . I was hoping for a real good bagel but these bagels just taste like ordinary bread. I ordered a double toasted onion bagel with scallion cream cheese on the side. The bagel was just barely toasted and had a few dried onions on top. I could count the number of scallion bits in the cream cheese. Not enough to qualify as scallion cream cheese. 2.5 stars I went in today around 10:30AM, a couple of families were in there and I was second in line with another couple behind me. When you walk in, all you see is muffins and some cream cheeses in the case. The bagels are behind the register on the wall. I bought an onion bagel, toasted with onion and chive cream cheese and a jalapeño cheese bagel, toasted with garden veggie cream cheese. Both were for me to consume, lol, I LOVE BAGELS! The Filipino man rang me up and made my order. He listened well and made the transaction smooth and fast. $4.54 for two bagels and flavored cream cheese. I took my bagels to go and I was out of there within seven minutes. I went home and got a fresh cup of coffee to compliment the bagels. I unwrapped both bagels and yay, my order was correct! Both bagels had a load of cream cheese in it that basically dripped out whenever I took a bite. Too bad the good ends there. The onion bagel with the onion and chive cream cheese tasted like NOTHING. The bagel itself was dense but yet somewhat had a light bread taste if you know what I mean. It's shaped like a bagel, has a tiny hole like a bagel and has cream cheese like a bagel but it tasted like slightly stale bread. After the first bite, it made me think 'this isn't a bagel.' The jalapeño cheese bagel surprisingly had good flavor but yet still had that same consistency as the onion bagel. Tasted like stale bread. The only good thing out of this entire order is the garden veggie cream cheese. It was the most flavorful thing that I ordered today and would buy the tub if I really wanted to. But why would I buy cream cheese at one place and buy bagels at another because I don't like their bagels? Yeah, I guess I wouldn't unless forced to. Besides the lackluster food, at least both employees working this morning were pleasant. Sad. I really wanted to like this place due to my bad experience at Posh Bagels down the street but I guess Castro Valley has no love for a real bagel lover. read more

This place is great! The bagels here are delicious! I always get the cheddar herb bagel with butter and a drink and it costs me about $3! How can you beat that? Posh bagel charges more for lackluster food this places is reasonably priced and delicious! I'm willing to drive the extra 2 blocks down the Boulevard to indulge in this divine bagel! The owner and employees are friendly and go the extra mile to make sure everything is ideal! I come here weekly when I'm back from school and do not see my loyalty waning anytime soon. I just moved into the area from the east coast and I spent quite a bit of time in New York (eating their delicious bagels every day) so I was bummed about not being able to find good bagels once I moved out here. I'm SO happy I found this place. The bagels are fresh and delicious. Their Turkey and Havarti sandwich is huge and SO SO GOOD. I can't wait to come here everyday for a little slice of home and great breakfast sandwiches! The owner Tom is also a super nice, down-to-earth guy who makes great conversation! I'm not a fan of bagels but my 9yo granddaughter swears by this place. So after hounding me for over a week she corralled me and drug me in. She ordered a strawberry bagel with egg, sausage and cheese . It looked so good I decided to try one . I had a strawberry bagel club, it had turkey, ham, bacon cheese with lettuce and tomato being a meat eater I added sausage also. Let me tell you it was absolutely to die for!!!! I've always loved big apple, I was so sad when the spot in the village closed and turned into crummy posh bagels I can't stand that place! But big Apple has such a good selection, and the muffins..... however they bake them, how the tops are almost a little crispy like a cookie on the edge. I've given this place a few tries since it's the closest bagel shop to my house. Their bagels have always been just mediocre, but its not like I expected a fantastic product from some cheap franchise; I was willing to accept that for the sake of convenience. However, the last time I went in I just ordered a bagel with cream cheese and got home to find that they a) the bagel itself was stale/extremely dense and doughy, b) they didn't bother to toast it, and c) there was such a thin layer of cream cheese on it I had to actually open it up to confirm they didn't forget to add some. Not to mention the cashier always seems like she's in a horrible mood - not sure if it's just teenage angst, but the manager may want to tell her to learn how to smile. If i could give them 0 stars i would. Ive only been here 1 other time and got a bagel dog. Not really something they can mess up. Go in today at 1:15 pm, its 1:23pm now. My bf ordered a coffee and a chocolate chip bagel and i ordered a california club sandwhich on a sourdough bagel. Out of 5 of their coffee containers only 1 had anything in it. And it didnt even fill up half of the cup. When we told them they were all out they didnt do anything. They didnt refill them or even offer to get some other drink or refund for the coffee. Then after getting into the car. I went to take my sandwhich out and it wasnt even wrapped. I barely touch it and it all fell apart. Avacado and mayo everywhere all over the bag and me and my boyfriends bagel. It was a mess. It fell apart and couldn't even be made back into a sandwhich. We were his only customers at this time. He rushed making my sandwhich and he couldnt even wrap it. The owner of this place is very nice and the first time coming here we had a good experience. But after today i wont be coming back. Bad customer service and he doesnt even know how to make a sandwhich. I tipped them as we paid which was a mistake. How do you not wrap it? It wasnt even worth going back in to have him fix it. I couldnt eat any of it. It was just everywhere. Will not be coming back. Spent $8 on a sandwhich just to have it fall apart and get all over everything. read more

I used to work here when Big Apple Bagels first came to Castro Valley. Idk why they moved to the new location but it seems nice. I haven't been in the new store at all. Just looked it up to see how it was still doing. The reviews are disappointing that it hasn't meet the same "go and make sure the customers are 110% happy!" Moto! Bagel was severely undercooked and when I called to inform them they acted like it was fine. Tasted like dough and not chewy like a bagel is supposed to be. Would have been great if it were cooked properly, the cream cheese was awesome. I've been to several Big Apple bagels and never had this issue. Recommend you fix your cooking equipment or just add a few minutes cooking time to the batch. read more
