This is one of my favorite bagel shop in Castro Valley! Quick service and delicious bagels always!!

This bagel place is a welcome addition to Castro Valley! We just moved here this summer and thought that The Posh Bagel was our only real option. Tears were shed. Reality was avoided. Occasionally, a lackluster bagel was consumed. And then. Big Apple Bagels. We came in on a Saturday, almost 12pm, and there were still so many bagels to choose from. Plus, there was a whole batch of fresh cheddar varieties and some plain ones just waiting to be put out! Wife had a jalepeno cheddar with plain cream cheese and I had a butter and cheese with onion and chive cream cheese, both to enjoy in the store. We also shared a banana nut muffin for the heck of it. The bagels were soft, warm, and not posh at all. The cream cheese was heaped on in generous servings. My onion and chive spread wasn't too strong, and had fresh chives chopped in. We also took home a bag of bagels and a tub of cream cheese to enjoy through the week. We'll see how long they keep. Our whole order of 8 bagels and cream cheese and 2 drinks came out to around $15, so that was great. The ambiance was nice - there seemed to be a steady flow of customers, and the young woman at the register was kind, patient, and attentive. A couple of things screamed "new business!" while we were there - the drink station was ill-kept - straws had coffee spilled all over them, there wasn't a trash receptacle at the ready (mind you, it was 5ft behind me, but that seemed like odd placing, given wrappers and lids and things to be tossed), and it was just messy. I trust they'll take care of things as they get into a groove. We will be making this our go-to bagel spot, but we hope you don't, because we don't want long lines and wrong orders. I bought 1/2dozen bagels yesterday half asiago and plain bagels. Asiago bagels are hard as rocks plain was ok. My jaws hurt!

Place is very good on weekdays early morning. Staggered in there 9am, helping out Family member who just got surgery. Never been here before, they were many flavors of bagels. I told the guy to make me Breakfast Sandwiches #'s 1thru 4, with the 4 Cheese bagels. Got home to Family members place near Northridge & my oh my, did we tore up all the Breakfast Sandwiches. We went back on a Saturday about 2:30 & almost all the Cheese Bagels were sold out, except for 1 Asiago. There were still a lot of Cheese Jalapeno & the guy told me that this bagel isn't that Hot! Bought breakfast Sandwiches #'s 1-4 again! Yum So if you're looking for a good bagel breakfast Sandwiches, this is the place to go. Just come early. I have been coming to this place for years! This place was originally in the Village in Castro Valley and had to move down the street in a small shopping center. (BAB) has had the same owner, same food, same customer service every time I go! They bake fresh bagels every morning and you can choose to have a breakfast sandwich or a lunch sandwich on YOUR CHOICE of bagel! It's a small store and every time I go in during the afternoon I never had to wait in line, food came out within 6 mins! Portion sizes are great, usually after half of my meal, I can't finish the rest! It makes a great snack later. I have never had a bad experience here and I think it would be worth you trying out the place :) In the picture below is a California Club Sandwich on Bedder Cheddar. I would like to start out positive. The staff was very nice and our order was ready when I went to pick up. We ordered a breakfast bagel it was ok. My main complaint was the look of the bagels. They were white. No browning of bagel got a dozen they looked terrible. Cook your bagels so their golden brown not white. read more

Came here for the first time this past week and went back the next day. The cashier (potentially the owner) was very nice and friendly. The place in general is very clean, especially compared to surrounding bagel places. The bagels itself were also really soft and fresh!! Only recommendation is if you like your bagel on the toastier side, ask for it extra toasted because they are a little pale. Other than that, this is definitely my new bagel place. read more

Fresh! Super fresh, soft, fluffy bagels! We tried the asiago bagels, everything, and plain. All three were incredible. Just the right amount of sour in the bread dough. We also tried some little chocolate muffins, and they were just as good. Top notch! read more

Their bagels are simply delicious! Be sure to get here early (especially on the weekends) since they're generally sold-out of almost everything and the selection will be pretty sparse by noon. The bagels are good but the workers need some training in customer service one of the workers literally yelling at another coworker in front of us being disrespectful causing a scene making it very uncomfortable and awkward. I absolutely love this place. I get a bag of bagels from them every week and they're consistently delicious. Besides the bagels, the baked goods are great as well. I highly recommend this place if you like New York bagels (who doesn't!?). It's the closest to NY bagels I've ever had in California. My husband loves bagels!! But on this side of the bay, a good one is hard to come by. Posh Bagel, down the street, quoted us a wait time of 30 min for a simple bagel and cream cheese one time. So my husband refuses to return ever again. We found Big Apple Bagels on Yelp and decided to give them a shot since they have a pretty decent rating. The inside of the shop looks like your typical chain franchise. Not a bad thing, but not much character to be found. When I first approached the counter, I was a bit confused. The display case is full of tubs of flavored cream cheeses and an array of muffins. Where are the bagels?? Behind the register and off to the side, behind the worker standing in front of it, you can find a wall of bagels in baskets with signs that signal the variety of flavors available. Not the most ideal spot for the main seller. I ordered an Asiago bagel with Garden Veggie Cream Cheese, my husband ordered a Plain Bagel with Plain Cream Cheese and a Southern Breakfast Sandwich on a Jalapeno Cheddar Bagel, and the little one got an assortment of muffins. Add a coffee for me and a chocolate milk for her and our bill rounded out to about +$30. Kind of steep, but I wont complain if it's worth it. Unfortunately, it wasn't. Upon first glance of my bagel, I was skeptical. The color of the bagel itself was so pale. Although there was a hefty amount of cream cheese, there was little evidence it was Garden Veggie, as it looked like plain white cream cheese. I took a bite and was so underwhelmed. The bagel was definitely under cooked. It was not as dense and stiff as a bagel should be and the texture was crumbly like bread. I was barely able to finish half. My husband said the same of the texture of his bagel sandwich and bagel. Did not feel like a bagel, and was lacking in flavor. My daughter enjoyed her double chocolate chip muffin. I had a bite and was not impressed. Again, lacking in flavor. My coffee too needed help. Even after cream and sugar, it tasted more like luke warm water than anything else. The staff was nice enough, service was quick, and the shop was clean. Plenty of parking available. BAB has a lot going for it.. except for the bagels sadly. :( And the search for a good bagel in the East Bay continues.. read more

Stopped for a quick breakfast with my mom she had the northern omelette on cinnamon raisin and I had the lox on a cheddar herb both where outstanding, fresh and tasty. The coffee selection is amazing but my mom can't have milk and they only had soy milk as an alternative she hates soy milk but their large selection of teas made up for it we also ordered a three pack of mini muffins to split apple pie, lemon poppyseed and Boston cream they where all dry I don't know if they were over cooked or day old but not good. The price was vary good and I will be coming back jus avoiding the mini muffins. read more

Absolutely terrible service and food. I asked if the chicken salad was made in house before I ordered. Both the cashier and cook said yes. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich for the first time along with my usual chocolate muffin. The sandwich came out and it was just canned chicken. Not mixed with anything. Just gross watery canned chicken. Talked to the same guys again and asked why they told me that they made the chicken salad in house. They didn't have an answer. They weren't willing to do anything about it except offer me more chicken. Why would I want more of the same thing I was complaining about? Took a bite of the muffin and it was dry and stale. I usually get the chocolate muffin here and it's usually crumbly, soft and delicious. This muffin was exactly opposite: hard and dense. I brought it to their attention. "It was made today" they kept repeating. Just because it was made today doesn't mean it can't be either overcooked or stale. I used to come here once a week for the muffin. Now I won't be going back because it's obvious they are trying to dupe their customers read more

We miss Rene and Randy at Big Apple Bagels here is Castro Valley as the store used to be in the Castro Village Shopping Center until the landlord raised the rent so high. The owners upped the rent on the stores and Big Apple Bagels just couldn't make it. WE are glad they finally reopened down the street from our office. When we have the chance we get our bagels from there. I was going to Posh Bagels but not the same. Had the chance to visit the store this morning, got two Southern Tradition breakfast sandwiches, glad we did, the best. Thank you Rene and Randy for making our day a good day. I'm becoming more of a bagel fan, the longer I go here! I think its because I don't like the traditional, very dense bagels and these are much lighter...also love the many varieties they have here. The proprietor is more than willing to offer what the tastiest, most requested flavors are when I'm inquiring to try something new to compliment my regular basic turkey on onion. Usually order two turkeys (always comes with tomato & lettuce, with mayo) to go; because I'm on my way home from work--overly hungry for lunch, and can save one for the next day (which is great if I just throw it in a zip-lock bag & into the fridge!). Those two basic bagel sandwiches are a lunch deal at just $6! Hard to get anything this good for this price usually without a coupon or some kind of discount. Occasionally offered samples of some of the mini-muffins, which of course means I may leave with a muffin or two for weekend breakfast as well! Always service with a smile :-) read more

I hesitate to complain online because I think these kids working here are trying their best with the system they have so I am asking the management to implement SOMETHING that will help them get orders right. Let me stress that this isn't a sometimes there's a mistake. It's each and every time we order here they make major mistakes. Today's mistake; forgot the egg on an egg sandwich.
