Yes, we ate, but this review is about our service. As it was our first visit (at the recommendation of a local resident), we were ill prepared for the protocol. Generally, guests stand in line, order, and prepay for their meals, but we grabbed a seat upon arrival and used our naïveté as a bargaining chip for table service. Jenny, our server graciously accommodated us with menus, recommendations, and of course our meal plus beverages. She was prompt, friendly, and attentive. So if you plan to partake in a southern style meal do yourself a favor and go on a Sunday night, maybe you'll get the same top-grade professionalism we experienced. read more

Everything I have ever had has been wonderful, hot, fresh, and just yummy. From the mac and cheese to the greens to the yams OMG I could go on and on....The lady that works the front can sometimes be a little short with people, but I'll just ignore all that while searching for my perfect food combination baked chicken or meatloaf, lima beams or green beans. Okay soooo I tried to place out for the first time last night and was not too impressed. Don't get me wrong, the food wasn't horrible, it was the fried chicken that was a hot mess. It was greasy beyond greasy. When I picked the chicken up it looked like I covered my hands with baby oil by the time I put it back down. I know that fried food isn't healthy in the first place but give me a break! The sides were decent. I ordered pinto beans, candied yams, and cornbread as my sides. The pintos lacked flavor. Yams were good though. I started to get some fish and now I wish I did. I might go back to try some dessert from this place but never again will I order the chicken! read more

One word disappointing!!! OK I ordered wings greens and Mac n cheese. Wings are not the best..no flavor at all..at the most they used white table salt n tossed into grease... I ordered a vegetable plate with dressing, cabbage, and carrot souffle. The carrot souffle was so awful I spit it into a napkin immdetialey. Just imagine carrots and castor oil marrying and getting sunburned on their honeymoon. The dressing tasted like an off brand Stove Top and that's not dressing, it's stuffing. The cabbage was good but not enough to make up for the rest of my plate. My grandmother had a bowl of collard stems instead of collard greens. Her candied yams looked like boiled yams that missed the candied process and tasted like it as well. I was so disappointed, and my grandmother said a fast food chain would have been a better choice. read more

My inner fat boy convinced me to order two meals. The bbq short ribs and the baked chicken. On a good note, I got 2 legs and 2 thighs when I expected one of each, so that was a plus. I only ordered 2 meals because most soul food joints I've been to here in Atlanta serve small portions. They didn't disappoint here. Overall the food was good. For the most part it was seasoned well, but I had two issues with it. 1...Ain't no love in that macaroni. None at all. I may return one day, but I wouldn't eat that with your mouth. 2...the cardinal sin of soul food joints was committed when they served stale tea. Ordered my food to go and y'all it was so stale that I threw it away and ordered some from McDonald's on the way home. And I'm not talmbout just a little bit stale. This had to be from days ago. I figured I wouldn't be the only one to mention this on this app. I'd actually recommend this place, but please don't disappoint yourself by trying the macaroni and sweet tea. By far my favorite place to eat in Atlanta!! I've been eating there for the last 7 yrs and I haven't been disappointed yet! The Carrot Souffle is great and the Carrot Cake is awesome. Also they have the best dressing, PERIOD!! Very affordable as well. read more

I was in the mood for some good southern food and I found the right place. I tried fried chicken wings, collard greens, mac and cheese, and the sweet corn muffin. The fried chicken was some of the best I've had, and the greens, mac, and corn muffin were also very good. This little place has great service, I will be back soon. read more

This is the place to go to when you want to die, but in a good way, like, "God, I ate so much I wanna die" or "I know that all the cholesterol on this plate is gonna kill me" or "I think that one piece of fried chicken is 4000 calories." Yup, it's that good. You walk in and are greeted by all of the different entrees that you can choose from. You can see the options in the window right by the kitchen: fried chicken, meatloaf, fried fish, ribs, mac and cheese, greens, cabbage (!), rice w/ gravy. Along the window is a plethora of desserts: red velvet cake, carrot cake, chocolate cake, yellow cake, etc. You place your order w/ a woman who you could very well call your auntie and go sit in the back where seating is limited. It's like church after church. You've left church to go eat, and then you go to Big Daddy's and enter a room where it looks like it could be the banquet hall of the church you just left. Very small and unpretentious. However, I must agree w/ the other yelpers that their mac and cheese is very average, which is surprising b/c everything else is SINsational. First time visiting. I came during much time so I was able to get their lunch special (one turkey wing & two sides for $5.99). It was really good. I got the steamed cabbage and yams as the sides and you can't go wrong with either. They were both delicious as was the turkey wings. So I came to Big Daddy's right after church. Place wasn't open, so no worries, waited in the car til it did. Mind you I was among a few others waiting. Sometimes, not all the time, I've seen establishments notice customers waiting, they tend to open the doors at least 5 mins prior or even a min or 2 prior. If nothing else they open on time. They opened 7 mins after. No worries, wasn't a huge deal. Now usually when I go to a "soul" food restaurants I like to see the food and the presentation of the food to help me decide what it is that I want, if you are the same way you will not get that here. You will get a small window to see what's available. The woman at the counter seemed to be a lil' impatient, so I ordered what seemed to look good through the tiny window which was baked chicken, dressing, mac & cheese, and collard greens. Sad to say non of which I was impressed with. Nothing was seasoned. My friend ordered curry chicken, black eye peas, and sorry I forgot what else, all of which wasn't seasoned either. I found myself trying to "jazz" the food up with salt, pepper, way more than I should have needed to do. And so did she. The mac & cheese wasn't even giving me what I wanted. Now the huge mistake I made was dining inside, I immediately regretted that decision. Going into the dining area you are immediately greeted by a smell of old dirty mop water that has tried to be disguised by bleach. The waiter in the back was quite friendly though, and checked on us through out our dining experience (hence the two star rating). Based on the recommendation of a family friend, we were advised to go to Busy Bee's on MLK Dr. I had not found any good authentic soul/southern food in Atlanta. I think one of the reasons is because most good southern places are in the mainly African-American south and west side of town, the side that Yelpers tend to leave out of the ratings community. I already knew about places like Mary Mac's, JCT...etc, but I wanted to find a no-frills traditional southern place that was not expensive. Busy Bee's was closed for Memorial Day weekend, so we ventured further into SW Atlanta to Bid Daddy's Cafe. It is a hole in the wall joint, and we were the only non-African Americans in the small cafe. They have a printed menu on the wall with all the basics, like fried chicken, rib tips, sides..etc. This place is very affordable compared to more well known southern places in ATL and LA. For $8, I ordered a fried leg and thigh, and two sides. The portions were generous, and overall was very good. The chicken was moist and the skin was crisp, fried perfectly and FRESH, and not too oily. It goes well with a bit of Louisiana sauce. I had mac n cheese and boiled okra as sides; both were filling and wonderful. I also tried collard greens and peas, also very good and not too salty/oily. To end, we had red velvet cake, and it was pretty divine, not too heavy. Service was good, after we ordered/paid and picked a seat in the back dining area, a waitress served our drinks, set our table, and served our food. The restaurant itself looks good on the exterior, but the interior was a bit grimy and dingy. To me, it is not such a big deal, but it would be nice if the place could be brightened and spruced up a bit. Will definitely come back! read more

Since I have been back the restaurant has improved. The smell is gone and the cashier was respectable.

Me and my friend ate here while we were there for my b-day July 4th. OMG !! I love in MN and they do not have food up like they day at Big Daddys, I personally would eat there everyday if I could lol but yes 5 stars from me they ave the best thus far !! read more
