After indulging in a slice of Billy's amazing Carrot Cake recently, I ordered a 6" Carrot Cake to celebrate a birthday for somebody at work. Lunch wasn't that big and dinner was not set to begin until 7:30pm - in a day that began with a 7 mile run at 4:30am before hopping a plane to New York at 8:00 there was clearly room for a mid-day snack or two. With art browsing the order of the day and four hours and myriad galleries now separating me from lunch my first ancillary stop would be Billy's Bakery - a spot I'd omitted on my previous visits but re-targeted for this trip based largely on their business model and reviews from a pair of trusted palates. To be fair, Billy's had me at hello - with slogans including "We use only the freshest, highest-quality ingredients in our baked goods, including real butter, whole eggs, and fresh fruit and nuts. We don't use preservatives in any of our products" and "Classic old fashioned American baked goods made from scratch and served in a warm, friendly atmosphere" it seemed the original shop on 9th was a can't miss for one of my New York traditions - the cupcake. Entering the small shop I was first taken at the small size and expected smells of cinnamon, vanilla, sugar, and butter - my guess as to what heaven smells like. With no less than 6 folks mixing, rolling, stirring, and chatting I stood and browsed for a bit before a well tattooed and pierced young lady approached with a mumbled "what can I get you." While I'm not so sure she was warm or friendly, she was capable of extracting two cupcakes from the case, bagging them, and collecting my $7 before returning to her work in back. Taking to the street and heading east my first taste of Billy's would be my standard - the red velvet. Soft and moist without suffering from super-sizing I will note that the three bites were all quite tasty as the smooth cocoa tones of the cake balanced with the creamy and mildly citrus tinged cream cheese frosting. Neither gritty nor overly sweet this to me represented an ideal "classic" red velvet and while not as good as Two Little Red Hens or Bouchon's classic takes it was quite good. The second selection would prove to be the better of the two - in this case one of the better cupcakes I've ever had. Simply titled "carrot cake" this cupcake was similar in size to the Red Velvet but literally weighed twice as much - to say it was loaded with carrots would be an understatement. Heterogeneous in texture with notes of cinnamon, coconut, pineapple, and pecan blending with the grated carrots the body of the cake proved an ample match to the same cream cheese frosting that topped the Red Velvet. read more

Another great cupcake place. Haven't tried anything else but the cupcakes are delicious. The icing on top here is what helps set them apart, often times you'll find a place that has great icing or a great cupcake but they don't seem to match up very well. Well Billy's has a great cupcake, just that perfect consistency with enough spring to the cupcake while still melting in your mouth. The icing is perfect with just enough sweetness it's not overly heavy or overly light. Perfectly combined to create a heavenly delight :) Scrumptious! read more

After living in the Castro in San Francisco and Dupont Circle in Washington, DC it only made sense that I'd live in Chelsea in New York. On a recent night, as I waited for a slice of carrot cake at Billy's I knew I'd made the right choice in neighborhood. I am giving Billy's three stars for the mere fact that this was our first experience with the whole cupcake phenomenon and it satisfied my out of town guests. We walked really far just to get to Billy's and in the process were attacked by a flock of pigeons. I flinched and gasped as they flapped their wings in our faces. Some elderly woman gawked at us and said, "You're not from around here are you?" I'm sorry but don't mess with me when I'm being attacked by birds. Have you ever seen Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds? Enough said. I didn't feel like picking a fight but I was slightly offended. All I could come up with was, "I'm from New Jersey." I guess that didn't make me look very cool either. Oh well. Off with that hag, we were on a cupcake mission! Billy's Bakery is very cute. It's pastel everything and there are cakes sitting in the window to tempt all that pass by. The bakers whip up the frosting right in front so you know it's fresh and full of fattening ingredients (all things that make baked and sweet goods divine). I had a hard time picking a cupcake. When there aren't that many varieties, it is still hard to pick a cupcake because then you want the prettiest one. I settled on a chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream frosting. Topped with a sugared flower, it was just okay. Nothing to rave about. I washed my cupcake down with some ice tea. Since it was so hot, I might have rated the drink (which was mediocre as well) higher than the cupcake since it was more satisfying. Billy's Bakery is also very tiny. I know they are a little challenged with the space but they could add a little more seating outside. We were able to snag the bench but it wasn't big enough for my group. Holy cakes, Billy's Bakery has over 1000 reviews on Yelp! My friend and I stopped by to celebrate National Chocolate Cake Day yesterday (Jan 27th) after dinner. Lucky for us, they had two chocolate cakes: Crowd Pleaser and Classic Chocolate with Chocolate. Each slice is $5-6 and HUGE (5 layers!). Compared to cupcakes, they are more on the dry side. I liked the yellow cake in the Crowd Pleaser the most. The chocolate was a little too sweet. I like their old school ambience and they're open from early morning to late night. I think if one wishes to be a successful bakery in the New York City, one has to at least attain what Billy's has. They have all the staples: banana bread pudding, delicious cupcakes, tempting pies and cakes, rich milk, cute baker girls, and an aura of home goodness. It just feels warm inside. It's also situated away from a lot of the tourist mish mash that other bakeries are usually swarmed by and though a line out the door is ordinary, they keep you moving along pretty quickly. I'm not aware of any other similar sweet spots nearby so Billy's is definitely an oasis after you've had your fill of whatever it is you ate in Chelsea. It's also kind of close by the Hudson River park area and not too far from the Highline so a grab-n-go can definitely be in order. Though what I will say is that when I want some dessert, I don't exactly crave Billy's bakes. I'm not sure any bakery really does to be honest. Almost all the places have their own little niche that they're good at but nothing where it makes me convulse uncontrollably. I must confess, for the first time in four years of visiting Billy's, I was disappointed. I thought I'd branch out; thought I'd bust through some barriers and order something out of the ordinary for me. So... I did. I perused the cases and displays and settled on a slice of classic yellow cake with buttercream icing, sprinkled with jimmies. It was NOT fresh cake. Imagine my disappointment. My friend, on the other hand, LOVED his coconut cream pie. So, I'm giving Billy's the benefit of the doubt since up til now I have been deliriously happy with my previous choices. Important note: Another friend, who lives in the 'hood, is boycotting Billy's due to their whole cake sales format. One can not simply stop in and expect to buy a whole pie or cake. This is a "by the slice" joint UNLESS you've provided 24 hours notice for a whole cake, or 48 hours notice for a cheesecake. Two dozen cupcakes can be picked up via walk-in without an order at any time. My cousin and I went here after dinner and took home a slice of chocolate cake with espresso frosting and a slice of ice box cake. It took us two nights to finish both slices, but all the effort was worth it. The slices are pricey, but they weigh about a pound. Oh goodness...icing....so creamy and delectable even just staring at the process! I was good though and only ordered 1-2 cupcakes since I was already carrying quite a few goodies from Chelsea market. I really don't know what the hype is. This place is compared to all the great Cupcake places in NYC and I have no idea why. The cupcakes are overpriced, tiny and not that great. Lets not mention how hard it is to get to the place, especially on a freezing night. Chelsea is just a place I wouldn't want to wonder around a night anyway. But apart from the location, the inside sure gets you to come in. A girl standing by the window just frosting away. It really does smell pretty great in here. Okay let's start with how small this place is and how seating is a big issue. yes, i understand that Manhattan is small which means the bakeries must be tiny, but the seating was just horrible. Basically just two huge tables that you must share with strangers. Moving on to customer service. SO RUDE! This place would have had three stars if it wasn't for the customer service. They were grumpy, they acted like they didn't want to be there and they were just annoyed at all the customers. Plus the prices on the board was all wrong. They were the "old" prices. That is what the lady said to me when I paid 2.75 for my hot apple cider instead of 2.50 which was on the board. CHANGE THE FREAKING PRICES! The red velvet was priced higher than the other cupcakes, and I'm guessing because it was popular. I heard great raves about the banana cupcake, but I didn't try it. It was also priced higher ($3 compared to 2.75). The cupcake was try and the cream cheese frosting was too sweet. Mind as well be buttercream icing. No point in calling in cream cheese. I did not like the cupcake one bit. Blah. The banana cake, on the other hand, was absolutely amazing. It is the ONE thing to come to Billy Bakery for. That slice is HUGE and it's 4.50. Decent price I would say. I would just go back for that . I also tried the pecan pie. My first time trying it. So I had nothing to compare it to. I'm not a big fan of it though. The crust was kind of hard. The hot apple cider was not good. It wasn't warm enough and it just wasn't worth it. I should have got the hot chocolate. Anyway. I wouldn't come back. Went here with my friends to satisfy our sweet tooth. Hmm. We may have gotten cavities instead. First off, Excessively Sweet! The cream was grainy with sugar. I ordered vanilla cupcake, red velvet and banana cream pie. Worst banana cream pie ever. It tasted like artificial banana milk flavored pudding inside the pie, pie crust wasn't flaky but chalky and cream made me a bit queasy. Total failure in the pie department. My friends got cheesecake. It was okay for first 2 bites, but they could not indulge because it was soooooo sweet. However, it was creamy. I know there are cheesecakes that can be grainy because it wasn't made right. Now unto their cupcakes. The vanilla cupcake was moist and delicious. The bad thing was the frosting. It was sugary and too much for me and my friends. Red velvet was a total miss, the cream was terrible. Grainy, overly sweet and not delicious at all. The cupcake base was dry and tasted slightly burnt. Although vanilla cupcake base was pretty good, I would not be going here to JUST for their vanilla cupcake base. Don't think it's worth it. I've searched for the best cupcakes from Los Angeles to San Francisco to NYC.... my last trip to NYC had me lining up like cattle to get into Magnolia - my vote then (2 Years Ago) was blehhh cupcakes, frosting was just icky, but the banana pudding, HELL YEAH. We randomly walked by this bakery and went in because it looked cute. Just being honest. Once we'd stepped inside I was glad we wandered in because it smelled amazing. The guy behind the counter was kind and even seemed like he could've been a Billy! bahahhah. Ok maybe not but he was very friendly and homely. Anyways, my conclusion is that I want to try more baked goods from Billy's because the red velvet cupcake was one of the best thus far. Nothing I've eaten in SF or anywhere else has been able to live up to this -- especially the frosting. Oftentimes frosting starts to taste really synthetic or too cheap/creamy for me to finish but the cream cheese frosting on these red velvet cupcakes is absolute perfection. Go try! read more

I also bought some Billy's Favor Box (handy box that holds 1 cupcake - $3.50) to the guests who attended my little wedding ceremony, and they loved it too! It's ideal for a little cute surprise gift. Billy's Bakery, a place I cannot resist. I was in the area and wondering what I can eat for a quick lunch. Then my bookmark poped up and directed me here, a tiny but packed bakery shop. OH, look at their small cheesecakes, and the pear hand pie; cupcakes, beautiful. That's what's on my mind when I entered this place. Basically, I would eat everything But I told myself to control and be a reasonable person before all those sugar kings. I ended up with a pear hand pie, which is amazingly good. The crust - crispy, flavored, but not dull at all The pear - not so sweet and I love it. I felt like the crust is well balanced with the pear so that made my stomach full but not overfull. I've been here a couple times and I have to say, Billy's Bakery always hits the spot. My friend and I came here after a decadent brunch (and a rigorous dance workout). I was initially going to pick up a cupcake but saw that the mocha chocolate cheesecake seduced me after perusing the goods. It's a tiny spot and we waited in line for 10 minutes but everyone in line was patient and easygoing. The mocha chocolate cheesecake costs about $5.50 and there's rarely any seating in this cozy spot so my friend and I walked over to the Flatiron district where there was some cafe seating. I have to say, the coffee ingredients were definitely strong so I was very happy that I opted out of a cup of coffee otherwise, I would have been bouncing off the walls. I love this place! So cute and the best dessert after eating at Le Grenine Cafe across the street. I have had the red velvet here - great! The icing is not just decoration, it could possibly be the main event. I can tell there was a lot of time and thought put into designing how the icing would taste. It is not sugary - more like creamy and sweet. The cake is nice and moist. If you are thinking Buttercup or here, definitely here. Last time I had Buttercup, I was left wondering how they got their stellar ratings. The cake was dry and falling apart, and the icing tasted like a bag of sugar was used. I thought that this place was pretty good. I tried two items: Chocolate Cupcake - this was a decent, straight-forward cupcake. It really wasn't all that amazing, but it was good. The cake wasn't too sweet and the frosting was perfect for making the entire dessert a balanced piece. Brownie - this was just okay - it had the texture of cake rather than a brownie. It was pretty chocolaty, but not the thick, dense experience of a brownie you would expect...it was pretty disappointing. Gotta say, the cupcakes from here are really good. Though I didn't care too much for the chocolate one (but I'm not big choco fan) that pumpkin one was spectacular. I first came to Billy's back in 2004/2005 when the Magnolia craze was still in effect. I liked it much better than Magnolia and still do. However, since then a ton of cupcake places have sprung up, thus reducing Billy's charm. I like Butter Lane, Sugar Sweet Sunshine, and Pinisi better than Billy's. At Billy's, I usually just stick to the vanilla frosting on top of a chocolate sponge. read more
