After communicating with Rebecca, the "orders manager" over email for a week describing how I wanted my cake pink and going over shades, they mistakenly made it orange. Rebecca REFUSED to own up to her mistake and tried to make me PAY for a replacement cake. Rebecca then called my personal phone number to yell at me and say "you can have your cake and eat it too". My review is for the "red velvet" cake and the Oreo bar. I kept trying different bakeries in New York looking for red velvet treats, and they keep failing me. The good: The cake is visibly moist and has a great taste. You can tell high quality ingredients are used. For the bar, same as the cake--high quality ingredients were used. The bad: But if you're looking for an authentic red velvet cake, Billy's won't provide. Unfortunately it's not a red velvet cake. It's a chocolate cake with red dye. For the oreo bar, it's very cakey. It doesn't give me a brownie or cookie bar texture/consistency. The summary: The cake itself tastes good due to the quality of the ingredients and the cream cheese frosting is really yummy... just not a red velvet cake. I ordered here for delivery for a birthday and was assured the day-of that the delivery would arrive by 5pm. By 5:30 I emailed and called to see where it was. The chelsea location said the courier had just left ten min before (so it was late). Then their customer service team emailed me saying the courier said he had delivered it already (he hadn't). I will say the customer service rep Julie was very helpful and apologetic, which is why I'm even giving three stars, but the delivery did not arrive until 7:30 when I had already left so the cake was not used. It is very unfortunate so I would definitely not recommend them for if you need something to arrive on time for an event. Aside from that, the cake itself was quite dry and bland. It was very easy to oder via the website. I ordered 2 cakes and they arrived on time. However, the largest cake I ordered arrived with a significant error on the inscription. Instead of "Thank you for holding down the fort.", the cake said "Thak you...", missing the "n". They offered me a complimentary cookie stack but it was still embarrassing to open it in front of a team of people.... The employees had no clue what it was (even after showing them the item on the website), and said they'd have to charge for 12 cookies and a tin. They need to train their employees to what they sell. I live close to Billy's and was initially very pleased with their cupcakes (would have given them 4 stars at this time). However, over the past month or so I've gone there twice and came home with extremely dry and seemingly stale cupcakes of the red velvet, banana, and whatever they call their yellow cake variety. I mean to the point where my wife and I threw the cupcakes out as they crumbled in our hands. Not sure if standards have slipped to where they're selling old product or what's going on - but for two batches to be this way I fear it's the new normal. My friends and I recently stopped in here for dessert after dinner one night. I still think about their German chocolate cake. It's a cute shop with two tables and not much seating, mostly grab and go. I don't recall this place having a strong sweet smell upon walking in, but I don't think that's always a winner. Service here is quick and friendly, no issues. They have a good selection of cakes, cupcakes and other sweets. We decided on a slice of German chocolate cake, a slice of carrot cake and banana pudding. I also had a latte, which went perfectly with everything. The cake slices were just right, moist and not overly sweet; I would be able to eat a slice of cake without feeling the need to rinse down the sugar. The banana pudding was really good too, came in a cute glass jar. If Billy's Bakery opened in Brooklyn, I would definitely be a regular just for their cake. "Cake is life" and with that in mind I try the carrot cake wherever I go on my travels. Have I found the perfect carrot cake here at Billy's? On first bite I was mesmerised with the perfect combination of flavour and consistency. Not too sweet and not too bland. Head over to Chelsea where you'll find the best of both worlds - Billy's banana cake. Imagine the banana version of carrot cake, and that's what it's like. Topped with a cream cheese icing, this banana cake is very well balanced, moist and not too sweet. Goes well with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. And while I'm not a big fan of cream cheese icing, this one was pretty good. The only thing I didn't like was the portion size - my slice was too small to share. I saw there was another larger slice so could be just bad luck. But at these prices, luck shouldn't come into play. They should err on the side of oversizing. Got some Billy's best mini cupcakes here for the guys in work. 12 mini cupcakes came up to Ono 22 dollars which was quite dear. I've been coming to Billy's for some time now, but it hasn't really changed all that much since my first visit. I think this place is conveniently located actually, because if you decide you don't like anything over at HARBS (located two blocks down?) you can come over here and try your luck. Billy's specializes in cakes, so I would strongly recommend you get something like their banana cream cake/pie/whatever, which is their best item imo. However, they tell me that their best selling item is actually the banana pudding, which comes in this cute little cup that you can take to go with you. The cup is a nice touch, as it's certainly reusable for many purposes. There is seating in this place, but really not much. There is a bench outside as well, but it's not really the best view, and once when I sat on this bench during a date with someone, some homeless person came up and bothered me a little. So, maybe this place is better as a grab and go type location. read more

He tried to put a face on one of his cakes using frosting, but then he realized that it had Eyes Without A Face. I've only been to Billy's Bakery once. I tried a chocolate-something cupcake, and a Red Velvet cupcake. I'm not a fan of cupcakes, but both of them tasted fantastic. The Red Velvet was particularly raved about by my food-tour partner who gobbled hers down faster than Billy Idol used to get girls' panties off. Probably still does. Billy Idol, the owner, got very hungry one night, around 12.30am, in the middle of baking. He ate the cake he was baking, then ate another, and another, and another. In the Midnight hour, he cried more, more, more. With a Rebel Yell, he cried more, more, more. This place was recommended to me by a few New York yelpers, so thank you very much to them for steering me to such a lovely little place. Billy's was started by prior employees from Magnolia Bakery, but they improved upon the formula. To me, Magnolia uses way too much sugar and the actual cake part of the cupcake is extremely dry, I mean really dry. So I don't ever go to Magnolia. I prefer Billy's as they manage to keep their cake part moist, which is much better, in my opinion. And well, I live in West Chelsea, so it's convenient for me as well. If I had written this review 5 years ago, I would have given Billy's 5-Stars. However, as I've been coming to Billy's for about 10 years now, I feel like the ownership must have changed a few years ago, cause the quality has gone down slightly, in my opinion. In addition to the slight downgrade in quality, I've noticed that the cupcake size has also gone down by about 10-20%, which is a bummer, given that each cupcake is $4 each. I still think Billy's is a great bakery, and they definitely don't skimp on their Cake Slices, so if you're looking for value, that's what you should get. We came late on a Saturday night around 11pm and got a Chocolate Cupcake and slice of Coconut Cake, of which, both were excellent. I've also had the: Red Velvet Cupcake Vanilla Cupcake Pumpkin Cupcake Red Velvet Cake German Chocolate Cake Birthday Cake Yellow Cake Banana Pudding Banana Cream Pie All of these items are excellent, but I tend to favor the Chocolate Cupcake, Banana Cream Pie and German Chocolate Cake the most, but that's just me. You can't go wrong coming here, and it's best if you come early or late (they stay open until midnight on weekends) as seating is very limited. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to us it was pre-Independence Day 2016 weekend and his bakery decided to close shop early on a Saturday night without any written signage posted to the door. Ergo, with a sweet craving we all were rushed to make a decision and make our purchases for a fast exit without critical thinking. Service was cold but expected when you are eager to an early start for a long holiday weekend. Our party of six was lucky to be the last patrons permitted to order as there were customers who arrived later and was denied entry with a cold "we're closed early for July 4th holiday." Seating is minimal and there is no restroom. It is designed for takeout. Price is fairly moderate. Billy's Bakery has the atmosphere appeal of a cold country bake shop set in a small town. Business card is available near the cashier which goes into my shoe box. I desired one cupcake- chocolate with vanilla $3.25 which was very rich and creamy making it very heavy and thick. Immediately afterwards I highly required either water or liquid fluids to flush this heavy richness out. I wished I had another saline injection like I did following my surgery. However, it is fresh in the matters of taste. Cupcakes on my mind motivates me to participate in a sweet crawl with this same party of six to hop from bakery to bakery or café to café in one day and Billy's Bakery is surely one included. read more

When Billy's partners with Postmates it's almost always a painful experience but today was the icing on the cake (puns!) of a bad week. My husband tried to cheer me up by sending me cupcakes and they were out of the specialty love ones (which is fine) so they call and ask what to replace it with and he says yellow cake/chocolate combo. For some reason I get 8 cupcakes all chocolate chocolate and not a single one is in tact. The icing is kind of liquidy/melty on some of these and the cake itself is really greasy. This is not the first time they've done this either - I've told them to replace with something else because I get that things sell out and it will arrive with something totally wrong. I am disheartened and honestly reluctant to be disappointed twice in one day by placing another order and having the same thing happen again. I guess my thoughts are this - if you can't accommodate these orders, don't partner with Postmates and offer it as an option.
