Birch is easily my favorite coffee place in the city. I have been to almost every location in Manhattan and it never disappoints. I even buy the bagged espresso coffee they sell in stores and ship it to my parents in Florida. All I need is a large latte with a dash of cinnamon to get me through the day. Birch is my go-to neighborhood coffee shop on the UES. I personally love their mochas with oat milk and baked goods (esp if you arrive early in the day!). Their Nutella banana bread has an amazing crumb and goes excellently with coffee, as do their muffins (I've tried the pumpkin which was great!). I was shopping nearby and wanted a quick coffee and pastry. It's a small shop like most nyc coffee shops so it gets crowded quite easily. I ordered an 8oz latte and a chocolate croissant. Both were very satisfying and the croissant was fresh. Even though they were backed up, the coffee was served quickly and at the perfect drinking temp. I highly recommend this shop if you're in the area and they roast their own beans if you're into that as well! read more

Stopped in for a drink on a Friday morning. I was surprised by the super small location. The only seating options are a counter with 3 stools. There is a limited menu with a few pastry items, Greek yogurt, etc... if you're hungry. I ordered the small chocolate chip scone, which was delicious. To wash it down I had a glass of their free water that is set out with small cups, and an iced mocha with oat milk. Several non-dairy alternatives are available, but I have been in an oak milk phase that borders obsessed. There was a steady stream of people coming in and out, and the decor is cool and industrial. The staff could have been a little more friendly/professional... but I guess that's what you get in NYC. read more

It's a small little coffee shop that I discovered many years ago and have been very pleased with everything :) Here's what I normally get here: * Oat-milk Latte (hot & iced are equally great!) * Chocolate croissant * Banana-bread (it's tiny, but REALLY tasty!) * Blueberry muffin * Chocolate muffin Bonus point: they have a stamp card so use it because once you're done, you can pick any drinks you want and you can ask for a large cup as well :) This place is super small and the seating area is limited, but if you come early in the AM or late afternoon, you should be able to grab a seat. Meh. I got a latte with soy milk, the size is relatively smaller compared to other local coffee spots like Ninth Street Espresso. Reason why this is a 2 stars review is because this latte taste so water down. I felt like I was drinking regular coffee. Also, soy latte that cost $5.25 and taste like regular coffee? No thanks. I love Birch Coffee! Even though there is a Starbucks on the same block as my apartment I always make it a point to walk the extra few blocks to go to Birch coffee. This location is small and quaint and in the summer time they will leave the front open so you can enjoy your coffee with some fresh air! Their cold brew and lattes are absolutely delicious- you can't go wrongs stopping in here for some coffee! They recently added a rewards program (punch card) which is an added bonus. I'm hoping they come out with a phone app in the near future! read more

Atmosphere: I was in and out but the vibe was cute and bustling but not overwhelming. The space is very small and cozy. Service: no complaints:) Coffee: I got a black coffee, iced. My partner got one hot. Was 6+ bucks or so. Solid cup of coffee. Not in love, but I'll enjoy it. Boyfriend liked his. ONE MAJOR COMPLAINT that actually drove me to write this review: I'm all for these no-straw-sip-cups for cold beverages but mine is LEAKING like a muhfckr. Since it's a sip cup, I have to tilt it to drink so every time it leaks like a damn mini Niagara. Granted, it may be a defect cup, but still ruined my experience. Service was really fast. I got the small hot chocolate and it pretty pricy for how small it was ($5). It was not very chocolatey and the milk was luke warm. I've had better, it was not that good. I wanted a pastry but the selection was very slim and the food looked a little old. My boyfriend got large iced coffee and he said it was pretty good. Had a nice flavor. Birch has one of the best dirty chai lattes in the city. Their chai alone is great too. Pretty wide selection of beverages to order from and an assortment of baked goods, including a handful of gluten-free options. As for non-dairy options, soy, hemp, and oat are available. Birch is one of the few places in the city where you'll find hemp milk (it tastes best with a hot beverage). COVID stuff: You can't go inside of the shop as it's pretty small so they have a pick-up counter where you can place your order. When I went last, there was one barista working in the back and one person taking orders. Both were wearing masks and gloves, and there was hand sanitizer available for customers. Cute little coffee shop just off Lexington Ave. There is no seating inside and just a bench on the outside but as its on 62nd - its a little quieter than being right on Lex. Coffee and hot chocolate were quite good. Pumpkin Spice muffin was delicious! Moist and full of flavor, unlike some places were the muffins just fall apart. Almond croissant was good too. French Boulangerie level? Non! But again, far better than some other coffee places I've gotten croissants from. Will keep this place on my list for when I'm in the area. read more

This is my favorite coffee spot in NYC! Each and every time we come to NYC, we make it a point to come here. Like I will go out of my way to get an iced latte! The staff is always genuinely friendly and very fast. Even if there is a line, they clear it quickly. They offer a small not so impressive selection of food but I don't care, I don't go for food I go for iced latte's!!! A huge plus is that they offer up a simple syrup for your drinks. This makes all the difference in the world to those of us who drink iced beverages. You don't have to stir your drink for an hour trying to get your sugar to "melt".... I am telling you, try the espresso! You will be happy or even happier once that caffeine jolt kicks in! Very very arrogant person in glasses. Works there permanently. Don't know his name. Worked there today 07/25/2019 I asked for the drink ALMOND lemonade (which I ordered from there 4 times before). He said ''we don't have lemonades'' and went mute for few seconds. I was confused and almost decided to leave when he said that it is the tea, not lemonade. Another guy his colleague looked at him and they both smiled to each other. So from the start he knew what did I want and just for some reason decided to lecture me about your menu. Absolutely rude and arrogant person. When I told this story to my colleague she said that she exactly knew who is this guys because she had the similar experience and she saw him doing this with other customers. I have been working as restaurant manager for more then 10 years. I would fire this arrogant guy in his first day. Will never come back to this location. read more

I was in need of a caffeine fix on the UES and one of the staff from Make Up For Ever recommended Birch Coffee. And I thank her. Very very much. This location is small and cute - floor tiles, wooden stools and elaborate coffee decor. Definitely a pop in place. They have approximately 8 seats on one longer table, four inside and four on the street side. There is also a bench outside. I ordered an oat milk latte, first time doing so. Wow, I may never go back. It was so smooth and tasty. Plus it was beautiful, the barista definitely nailed the latte art (which is generally a lot harder on non dairy milk). I nabbed a seat at the table and spent some blissful minutes people watching in the late Sunday afternoon sunshine and enjoying their kickass playlist. The staff were very friendly - and they got the coffee skills. They offer oat, soy (and perhaps coconut??) but not almond. I'm assuming that is deliberate ;-) Fair price for the area. There's no restroom. That about sums it up. I'll definitely be back to get another oat latte fix and to check out their other locations. read more

I've been to over 2 coffee shops in NYC. This one is by far my favorite. The large cappuccino had a heart in the foam. The flavor was even better than the Starbucks on Bison. There was an 11 year old French Bulldog in a stroller and we got to talk with the nice owner and tell her about our Neighbors English Bulldog that ate a frisbee and had to have it surgically removed. This is a cute coffeeshop and I'm sure has stellar coffee, but no wifi or seating areas. I was walking around in the rain with a friend of mine and we looked for a place to sit down and get online. Birch was close to where we were and while Yelp helped us locate it, we were disappointed to find that there was no free wifi. I expected the limited seating, but I figure pretty much every cafe has wifi these days. This place has some really good reviews and since it's so close to school I decided to try it out today. It's a rather small place with enough seats for 5-6 people. They have limited dessert options like donuts, cookies (that's all I remember). I ordered a cappuccino and the carwash donut. The cappuccino was good, nothing to complain about and the donut (lavender and vanilla) was ok- just way too sweet for my taste. I've been to the UWS Birch Coffee (http://goo.gl/Q6xFDw), and when I walked by this new location in my current UES neighborhood, I had to check them out. This location is very tiny (as in - there are only 6 seats - tiny) and they also don't serve food other than pastries (the man behind the register apologized so much when I made a Sad Keanu face upon hearing the news), but they still serve drinks with top notch service. The cold brew coffee is delicious (they have growlers of the stuff), their hot coffees are roasted and brewed with the utmost care, their teas are equally delicious and complex, and they have very admirable thoughts on sustainability and the use of local ingredients. Just like every other Birch Coffee, they have a library of books with a "leave a book, take a book" policy. I AM SO IN LOVE WITH THIS CONCEPT. The selection at this location is still small, but I know that with time it'll be just as good. I'm still going to visit the Flatiron location soon because their library is the biggest, but I kind of like how this collection is a good representation of what my neighbors read. Speaking of neighbors, I feel like this is the perfect neighborhood joint. The limited seating will make things a bit difficult, but for grabbing a drink before work or before a stroll in Central Park? It's perfect. There is only one employee working at any time, so I just know that it'll become a good place to get to know the employees and to be able to order "the usual" without any explanation. What a gem! It's a tiny tiny little place, with a window seating area that's indoor-outdoor, but is actually so cute with plenty of table-top space. Seats are both inside and out. Inside, they're going for the rustic look. The prices are a bit high, but you're getting very high quality product. I ordered the Kyoto cold brew coffee, where they brew it for days, I believe? I also saw who I presumed was the owner hand pour the water over beans into someone else's brew. Their small display of snacks was nice, and I got a chocolate chip cookie. Great hole-in-the-wall coffee shop in Upper East Side NYC. Very small space with a tiny, 3 person standing/seating area. All the standard beverages are on the menu. For some reason they did not have almond milk, so we ordered 2 machiattoes made with oat milk. They were made promptly and were really good. It's small inside but gives a warm friendly invite when you walk in. The staff is so nice, accommodating, and all have the best personalities! I'm a huge fan of the coffee at Birch, and was a frequent patron to the Upper West Side location back when I lived on the west side. When I moved to the east side, I was ecstatic to find out that there was a Birch right round the corner from my apartment! Coffee-wise, I was not disappointed at all. It was smooth, strong, and smelt amazing.. I wouldn't have expected any less. However, I was surprised to see that the space was tiny, with no tables at all except for a small bar top that sits a maximum of 4 people. I visited on a Saturday afternoon, and the line was going out the door. The small space and long line made it really cramped inside, with people having to squeeze past others to pick up their coffee and to put their milk/sugar etc. This east side location is definitely meant for people to grab and go, so just be aware that if you're looking for a coffee shop to sit and relax, this probably ain't for you. read more
