Preface: I love the Black Bear diner in OREM- have eaten there & enjoyed it many times. Big servings & reasonable prices. Chicken & waffles are so good. All the breakfast food I've tried-yum! It's always a bit busy but worth the wait. Plus, they get the food out right away. And customer service is great. But... Sadly, when we went to the American Fork/Lehi location we waited incredibly long to be seated (45 min or so) and then we had to wait 20-30 min for our food. The waiter tried his best but he was assigned to too many tables to be efficient plus the food was sub par. I had the pot roast & it was fatty. My green salad was basically just a plate full of ice burg lettuce and some carrot shavings. Don't come here for a salad. My kiddo got the chicken strips kids meal which came with no fresh fruit or veggies. My husband was also not pleased with his meal which I can't remember at the moment. Lastly, customer service was poor. We had to ask for things numerous times, like refills & napkins. Our waiter didn't know the menu very well at all. To be clear, this review isn't about the entrées at Black Bear Diner, since I haven't experienced those. It is specifically about their pies. My wife and I went to Black Bear Diner last night to pick up a cheap pie. Being familiar with places like Village Inn and Marie Callender's, we were a little disappointed at the diminutive size of Black Bear Diner's pies at first but thought it would give us a chance to try a variety of flavors, so we chose a small berry pie, a banana cream pie, and a chocolate pie. Looks-wise, the pies seemed fine, and the boxes were certainly attractive, but when we got the pies home we discovered they weren't actually pies at all, but instead bowls of pie filling with a crust lazily plopped on top. Again, disappointing but as long as they taste OK it shouldn't be a problem, right? Wrong! Oh, the taste... That's where the real troubles began. If I had known that by "berry pie" Black Bear Diner really meant "baked scabs" I would never have bought it. Parts of the "berry pie" were somewhat berry-flavored, I guess but those parts were mixed with generous amounts of berry-shaped radiation wounds. Yuck! The rest of the filling seemed to be made out of toothless gums. The filling had the consistency of a pencil eraser and tasted a lot like despair. I didn't try the other pies, but my family members seemed equally forlorn and dejected as they reluctantly spooned crust-spackled banana and chocolate pudding into their quivering mouths. It reminded me of squeegeeing Gerber ham purée into a toddler's pursed lips, complete with tears and arm-flailing and everything. Black Bear Diner may have the best food in the world, but their pies are personally baked by the devil and smack of eternal damnation. For the sake of your own souls, stay away. read more

Decent food. Delicous and fresh. Their bacon does not look like they are from a frozen package. Looks like they just sliced them from a free cut pig. Very nice. So much healtheir. When we ordered, they messed up the egg order. They gave us the correct one for free. So that is very professional. read more

A couple of friends and I came here for brunch and it was great. Our server was Lia and she was very friendly and attentive even though we came at a busier time. Would recommend the volcano and the California Benedict. read more

Ordered Biscuits and gravy, the biscuits were so dry and hard, when I paid my bill I told the cashier and her response was "it was probably yesterday biscuits it happens " my response was " well that was a waste of money " she smiles and walks away.... Did you know that black bears come in a variety of colors? Tan, Cinnamon some with a white spot but this has absolutely nothing to do with Black Bear Diner. Came here for lunch on a weekday and our party of four was seated quickly. Orders were taken with our friendly server answering questions. Food arrived quickly and was prepared well. If this sounds straight forward it is. Nothing fancy just good food with friendly service at a reasonable price. For some reason I view this as a breakfast restaurant but noticed on the menu that there were other options like salads, sandwiches, burgers and other options available. The pancakes were good but not as good as the other breakfast place that rhymes with Penny Ann's. It seems most items on the menu ranged from $8-$11. There were a great selection of pies and deserts that looked great, hopefully next time. If your looking for a sit down "old school" diner type of place you've found it here. read more

The waffles and pancakes alone are worth 4 stars. The waitress warned that the particular cooks on duty over cook the chicken but I ordered it anyway. She was right, it was pretty much inedible. I've had the chicken from chicken and waffles cooked correctly and it was good. Also the breakfast sandwich with pesto aioli is amazing, but a bit overpriced. Don't get it if you are hungry. This is the very best place in town for breakfast. They serve breakfast all day. Fresh squeezed orange juice reminds me of my childhood on the farm in California. The portions are huge to biscuits are amazing and serve with real butter. The scramble contained fresh Avocado, spinach, onions, tomato. Restaurant is clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The service was fast. I love this place and will bring a company here for meetings. read more

Do not eat at this place! The floor is dirty, the atmosphere is lacking, the food is just plain gross! Our party of 9 had a terrible meal. All, I mean ALL, of our food was cold, overcooked, or both. If it had not taken so long to arrive at our table I would have sent it all back. ( we did send a couple of pates back to be rewarmed.) But there's not much you can do with cold pancakes, cold waffles, cold eggs, dark brown, dried out chicken, leathery brisket, and wilting salad. I have contacted the company several times, asking that they honor their pledge to "make it right". They have not even acknowledged my emails. I have been to other Black Bear locations and have always enjoyed a nice atmosphere and good food. read more

You get a lot of hearty food for what you pay for and it's pretty good. I had my expectation set pretty high about this place from all the things I have heard, so maybe that had something to do with the impression I got. I went there for a business breakfast and got the spinach and mushroom eggs benedict. The sauce was good, but not as flavorful as I was hoping. The sides were nothing to shout about - fruit and hash browns. We were seated pretty quickly and our waitress was very attentive and serviceable. The people there are nice, and the food is good, but I think that kind of hearty diner food has never been my favorite, so that probably has some influence too. read more

There has been a lot of hype about this place for awhile. I've been meaning to try it out at one of there other locations just haven't gotten around to it. Finally tried out this location. So first off it was very packed on Saturday and there front seating/waiting area is not functional at all. It's a very tight confined space where you talk to the hostess and is extremely close to where you pay too. Not only that there is hardly any seating to wait. So my husband and I stood in very tight area waited 20 minutes. Then we were seated in the worse possible place.... we were in direct entrance of the bar/kitchen and that wouldn't bug me beside our daughter was in the walk way. She was in her car seat sleeping in a sling and her car seat bumped many times by waitresses and waiters trying to pass through to get meals and etc. Anyway what I'm trying to say who ever did the design on the building did terrible because it's not functional for there high traffic. The menu was very overwhelming! Tons to choose from. I was really looks for a dish that had biscuits and gravy and pancakes but there wasn't. And added pancakes or adding biscuits and gravy is extremely expensive. $7 for add of pancakes and $5 for a add of biscuits and gravy on top of most dishes range from $8-$15... no thanks. I ended up getting the southerner and I found they were alright! Could have used more gravy on top there was times I got to biscuit with no gravy and it was very dry. The Potatoes that were my hash browns were just terrible. Crisp on the outside but mush in the middle. Not how I like my hash browns at all. My husband got lunch since it was noon when we were eating got the Cuban and he said it was alright. Didn't touch his potato salad it came with.. didn't blame him it looked old and disgusting. Our waitress was nice and kind but she was telling us say hungry bear or something like that to get a free pie. But she didn't even really know what the phrase really was to get a free pie so my husband was like I'm not gonna say that if she's not even sure. As you can tell I find this place to be not to my liking. Because of this whole experience I probably won't be back because food wasn't great and service wasn't great and that's why I go out to eat. read more

Three stars for this establishment, but only because the service was impeccable. I just wish the fare had lived up to the service. I ordered the chicken Parmesan with marinara over noodles. Generous portion but the flavor was lacking while giving off a 'cheap' taste. I had hopes that the veggies would not be of the frozen variety, but I was disappointed in this, as well. Another person in my party ordered the chicken pot pie. Again, generous portions but overall flavor a satisfaction was left wanting. We have been eating at BBD for years in Arizona and love of. This location in AF really needs to work out some of the kinks. Our server was a bit out of it and messed up our drink order. When the food finally came out mine was luke warm and nothing special. My hubby ordered the Eggs Benedict and the eggs were completely over cooked which is a huge let down for that meal. Since we really don't have a breakfast place close this place will suffice but I think there are far better options out there if you are willing to make a little drive to get to them. This is our second time at this location and honesty I don't know if we will be back again. read more

I used to think highly of this place for breakfast, not anymore :( . After leaving I've begun to wonder if maybe management has changed or something. The atmosphere was different - the floor had not been cleaned/vacuumed from the day/night before (pretty bad and it was almost noon when I was there) and I had to sit and listen to the cook's music and him singing along with it out in the dining area. But let's get to the food. Overpriced. Sure it was the large breakfast "The Griz" but one breakfast and an orange juice shouldn't cost $20, even the big one. Not hot. I won't say it was cold (or I'd have given them 1 star) but it was only kinda warm. I started with the sausage and noticed that the bite wasn't hot, and wondered about the middle so I checked and sure enough the middle was definitely cold. I ordered over-medium eggs but they had whites that were not just a little bit runny, but quite runny and still clear. Bacon was cooked on one end and not the other (but that one end was still not hot). Hash browns were just barely warm. And the prized pancakes were quite smaller than I remembered, the flavor was still ok but not as good as before. I didn't have time to have it remade so I didn't make the waiter take it back - really wish I did though. Overview: I could have paid much less and got a better breakfast elsewhere. Must be extremely understaffed. We were seated and it took 20 mins to order and we had to remind or waitress we hadn't ordered yet. We saw a table get up and leave after the wrong food was brought to their table. We were seated before the table next to us and there order was taken before ours. Seems a little chaotic. I would say it wasn't the waitress' fault had we not been forgotten and the table next to us brought the wrong food and left. I was brought a scramble plate and I ordered a Denver omelet. Had to reminder her about my milk. Still don't have it and I'm just about done with my breakfast. Coffee was good. No knife and spoon. Only a fork. Probably won't come back to this location. This place is like IHOP and Waffle House had a baby, but a bit more upscale and an explosion of black bears. My family and I were in town visiting family and they know I live for brunch foods, so we hit up Black Bear Diner on a late Monday morning. We were sat pretty quickly and then greeted promptly after that. Their menu is HUGE, but I settled on the ScramBOWL with a biscuit and glass of OJ. My hubby got the patty melt, and my son had the strawberry French toast. With how slow it was, food did take a decent amount of time to get to the table, but was absolutely worth the wait. The OJ is fresh pressed too! I didn't sample my family's dishes (other than my sister's large pancakes, which were melt in your mouth and sweet as can be... LOVE), but mine was AMAZEBALLS. The ScramBOWL is a dish with scrambled eggs mixed in with jalapeños, bell peppers, sausage, thick cut ham, cheese, and topped with white pepper gravy, paired with a fresh baked biscuit bigger than my face. It was massive and sososososososo delicious. The biscuits gave me life. Add some fresh butter and strawberry jelly to them and it's just heaven. I will definitely return just for the biscuits. Service was ok, but we had to flag down our waitress a couple times for butter and to-go boxes when she just quit coming to our table. Also, the hand squeezed orange juice is almost $5 a glass. I wasn't aware of that before ordering, so I'll avoid that next time and just do water. read more

My husband and I came for a late Christmas Eve breakfast. We were sat down, our waitress cheerily took our order and brought us our drinks, then we waited, and waited, and waited. 45 minutes later, my husband realizes that people that came in after us are already halfway through their meals. For the next 10 minutes, we try waiving down our waitress, but she was too busy chatting with colleagues to realize we needed assistance. After 58 minutes of waiting for our food, we left. We let the girl at the checkout know that we were leaving and explained our experience, and she had absolutely nothing to say. We love Black Bear Diner and regularly went when we lived in Orem. We will definitely be taking the extra time to go to a location that doesn't forget about their guests. read more

I love this black bear, every time we go it's great food. My favorite is their trip tip dip, you have to get it loaded and with their awesome fries. Their orange juice and pancakes have a special place in my heart too, absolutely delicious! We always get good service here as well and the place is super clean. The only thing I dont like here is the hash browns, they're always undercooked, flavorless, and cold as all get out. I would love to see that changed. read more

Never fails to disappoint. If massive servings of cold, old-grease-tasting food is your jam, this is the place for you. I've been four times now at different times of day and the food quality is nearly always the same: Cold, or room temperature, hash browns taste like old grease and they are rarely cooked enough (might explain why they are cold), and no personality in the food. No flavor. It's like fluffy pretend food. Looks like it should be good, but then you take a bite... bummer. These guys need to improve or they will go down. I'd take Denny's any day of the week over this. On the plus side, your dog may enjoy the leftovers. :/ read more

I don't know why we keep coming back here. The food is great! However their hostess people Aly and Mikya should not be in charge of quoting time and managing parties. They seated 2 groups of 5 and a group of 9 ahead of us that came in after us. The group of 9 was an employees family which we watched park and get out of their car after we had already been on the list for 5 minutes. We were quoted 15-20 minutes and waited 75 minutes to be seated. This is a recurring problem for this location. We have eaten at the St. George location multiple times and have never had this problem...as I sit here writing this review, one of the parties that were seated before us but arrived after us, and ordered after us already have their food. Terrible service...think twice before waiting. read more

I had very high hopes for this place. I'm from a small town and I love small town diners. We went here and we're told that it would take 5-10 min. After about 20 minutes we were finally seated. Not a big deal to me since our group was big and that can be expected. We then ordered our food and again, waited. Took longer than expected and it wasn't even a busy day (Saturday afternoon). Really none of that would have mattered if the food was great. I got the pancake meal and the food was ok. The eggs and bacon were good but the pancakes were just too dry and just not as good as I expected. My girlfriends burger tasted like a burger from Sonic (her words). 9/3 ~ 9:30a manager is a jackass. I had placed an order on the restaurant website for deliver to my motel. Entered the address, room #, etc. The order processed as a pick up. I called immediately, the hostess transferred me to the manager who picked up, said "hello" once, then hung up. I called back immediately. He answered the phone, I explained what happened, he said "oh you must've selected" pick up".... no, I selected delivery and entered the delivery address with room #. He said "just go back online and cancel the order". I said OK, hung up, went back online to find there is not a "cancel" option. By then after screwing around on the phone with him wasting time I knew the kitchen was making the order so I drove to the restaurant and picked up my order. I'm from a different State, do not know the area, have been using delivery from various restaurants. Tried to go here for dinner. Walked in and even though the place was almost empty no one could be bothered to even say hi. Had a waitress look in or direction a few times as she walked by to do something one one of many empty tables. There was even a waiter who came up front to ring someone else or who couldn't be bothered. All out would have taken was a hi, be right with you. Nice little rustic diner. Good atmosphere. Coloring for the kids and a pretty big menu with good options. That's about where the compliments end. Pepsi only products, which is kind of a big deal for me. I think my biggest issue with this place in the price. The kids menu was expensive, between $5-7 and that does NOT include a drink which is an additional $1.69. Kind of hard to pay $8-9 for a kids menu. The adult entrees were about $12 on average, and then the drink was extra. You're looking at about $15 for an adult. I feel like there are a lot of better options for that price. You could take your family to a movie and eat there for about the same price. Also, we waited well over 25 minutes, so with our three kids was very difficult. I left the restaurant feeling angry and feeling like I overpaid. The food wasn't bad...not great...just pretty good. I won't be coming back. read more
