I asked for what the restaurant was known for and the waiter said the ribs country fried steak, and the steaks were great. So I tried the black bear sirloin and it was the worst cut of beef I have ever had any restaurant. It was pure fat and tendons. I also asked for mashed potatoes and got a completely different order. I was very disappointed in my experience. The waiter made it right by taking the steak back. But if you were the cook and looked at the steak cut the way it was it should have never be used in the first place. They may have other great plates but I'm just done with this chain. read more

This review is very mixed. The hostess at the front was rude and flat out lied about calling the names of those parties whose tables became ready. On a very busy morning with lots of people waiting, she stood at her station and called names out. There were lots of people forced to wait outside in the area between the doors. She made no effort to alert these people. She then said she personally walked out to where the people were. Why bother to lie? Did she think no one would notice? I don't get it. Our service other than her was very good. The food was very good. The prices are a little high but not unreasonable. The fact that they skipped over our party (and several others) wasn't a big deal. This place is a joke. An absolute joke. Our food sat under the warmer for 15+ minutes before it finally came to us. My dish was supposed to come with 3 eggs and only came with 1. My hash browns were uncooked. I sent them back. They tried to remedy the situation by telling me they would bring me 3 NEW eggs with the newly cooked hash browns so they would all be warm together. It took 10 minutes to get my 3 eggs and an additional 30 MINUTES to get my hash browns which STILL weren't cooked!!!!! They offered to box up my hash browns and eggs which took an additional 10 minutes and never offered an apology or something to make the situation right. Our waitress was very kind and clearly didn't have any control over the situation. BUT, I can't believe how many times I saw the waiters and waitresses standing around chatting while the extremely busy restaurant waited for their dinner. I ORDERED A CLUB SANDWICH AND RECEIVED A TUNA MELT. They offered to exchange it but I didn't want the sandwich to go to waste so I ate it. It was cold when I got it. The flavor was OK. In my opinion they should have offered a discount or something for their error. All I really got was "I'm sorry." There's too many places to eat to not be treated well. One of the waitresses said if we would say "our inner bear is hungry and needs some food" when we went to the cashier to pay they would give us a free desert. I mentioned that to the lady cashier and she had no idea what I was I was talking about. She hollered for Abraham but he didn't come over. Seeing that I would receive no assistance in this matter I just left. Makes me wonder about the training they receive. Not a good way to start a business. read more

Eh, my wife still prefers IHOP. Three of us went to 'Linner' about 2:30pm on Sunday afternoon. I had breakfast, wife had open faced turkey sandwich and kiddo had BBQ burger. Well mine was lukewarm to cold. The only thing hot was the sausage links and bacon. Eggs and ham were lukewarm, hash browns were cold, couldn't eat them and pancakes were hot. Lots o food but one small cup of syrup (about 2 tablesoonsful? Not enough for the huge pancakes. Wife's turkey sandwich and mashed potatoes were barely warm. Would've preferred hot. Sons burger was rare and fries were cold. I guess he should have specified well done on the burger but who cooks them rare? #EColi? So far IHOP is the one to beat. We still have to try jims and one man band, maybe dennys since the new buttermilk pancake recipe came out. read more

I hadn't come here before because the reviews weren't great, but we ended up going today for breakfast/lunch. It was delicious! Awful experience. The food was super gross. They put so much gravy it was like soup and my food was burnt. Service wasn't great either.

They quoted us a 15-20 minute wait for a party of 5. People came in after us and got seated. After 45 minutes of waiting, 2 people in our party left and we were finally seated. They gave us 2 waiters. Both forgot to bring the biscuits and gravy, more coffee, and creamer. It took 25+ minutes for food to be served. We waited 25+ minutes for a waiter to acknowledge us and we had to ask for a check. The food was okay but not worth the terrible, unprofessional, under trained staff. read more

I visited black bear diner early morning of 09/13/17 on my way to visit some family in northern Utah from my home in Las Vegas. I LOVE this place! It was such a friendly and welcoming environment! Our first and last visit to this place. I was excited at first. The place was kitschy cute, like a Yellowstone diner. Menu had a lot of options, including all day breakfast. Hubby ordered meat loaf and mashed potatoes. I ordered Eggs Benedict over brisket with "cheesy bacon grits". We were served one soft drink in a timely manner, but had to beg for a refill and only one of ours was ever refilled. Husband got a green salad with only iceburg lettuce and a couple sprinkles of shaved carrot. The waitress forgot to bring the cornbread and offered to bring it. She never did until the main meal came. Our meals came 30 minutes after ordering and the meatloaf was decent with a large helping of mashed potatoes and gravy. My eggs Benedict were horrible. The eggs were cold, almost raw and the sauce was completely lacking in flavor. Really, it was like yellow water. The brisket meat the eggs were on was gross. The meat had a processed texture and flavor like Spam. I was super excited to get cheesy, bacon grits and was shocked at what I was served. There was no cheese, bacon or grits in the bowl. The bowl consisted of some cream of wheat that had water poured over it and stirred up a little until it was the consistency of lumpy soup. No flavor except some bacon/smoke extract and not much of that. No cheese, no grits, no bacon. It was just gross and had a skin on top like it had been sitting for an hour. The saving grace was some chunked fruit and a giant pancake. There was so much food, I expected to take half home for lunch tomorrow, but just had the waitress toss it. That is if I ever saw the waitress again. She never checked back, never refilled husband's soda and we had to pay at the front counter. We waited 10 minutes to pay and finally threw down some cash and walked out. The host was in charge of the cash register, to-go customers and seating new guests. As we left, the new guests had been waiting 5 minutes and still hadn't been greeted. read more

We go to Black Bear Diner often. Usually we have had good service. We've had bad, bad service twice and both times it was the servers. They aren't organized and the first time we complained the manager actually tried to improve it for us, the second time which was today another manager wanted to excuse the poor service on a family situation with the server. Apparently the server asked management to cut back her tables. Management didn't, she was overloaded per the manager, so I said oh so it's your fault, the manager didn't like that. But we received no coffee refills, no water refills. I got up and got the coffee and water and refilled our drinks. I as a customer should not have to wait on myself. As soon as they saw me in their space all eyes were on me. Well I use to wait tables and I'm not afraid of waiting on myself. It makes them look bad, because it is bad. I told the server she failed us today and she needs to do better. Apparently when she told management I complained she was crying and could then not wait on any tables. If you are working in a restaurant you better get thick skin. I was not rude but firm with how I handled this situation. read more

This was my first experience ordering from Black Bear Diner. We decided to use take out. I was so excited to have their salmon dinner. Boy was I disappointed in it. The salmon was so dry, like it had been microwaved, the vegetables were still in their microwaveable plastic baggie and the French fries were cold and tasteless. I was suppose to get a cup of soup with my meal, but when I opened the container it was only a half a cup. The soup was the only thing that tasted good like it was suppose to. I live less than 15 min from this diner. I am not at all anxious to order here again. This meal was not worth the $15 I paid for it. read more

It was the worst meal I remember of my entire life and I'm a senior citizen feeling a duty to warn the public. I got the chicken dinner there last night. It looked like the chicken had starved to death because there was so little meat in the pieces. I've never seen chicken with so little meat on the bone. The wing had a very thin layer of meat on the bone, just breading. I didn't think I could bite the meat without biting the bones so I didn't even try to eat the wing. The thigh had a very thin layer of meat, seriously about as much meat as I have on my fingers, one end of which was dried out and brown like it was under the warmer for too long before dipping in the batter to fry. The breast had a little dried meat. It seems like they take the bones left after a previous meal and dip them into the batter to fry and serve the next customer. The carrots looked and tasted like they had dried out before boiling. The mashed potatoes and gravy were okay. The waitress forgot to bring the muffin that comes with the dinner so I had to ask for it. I liked the muffin. I will never go there again because the food that meal was so bad the cooks must have surely known. I had left my phone in the car. I wish I had retrieved it to take a picture for you. It was obvious before being dipped in batter that the chicken was nothing but bones. Did they eat the meat off before dipping in the batter to fry? Also, the "cup of soup" that comes with the dinner is more like a fourth of a cup. The chicken soup had one small medallion of carrot, 3 noodles and 3 crouton sized pieces of chicken served in a bowl a little bigger than a shot glass, definitely less than half the size of any coffee cup. I could have gone to a buffet for the price of this meal. read more

Interesting that this location has an average 3 star rating...I took my family here a couple days ago. We went earlier in the day to avoid a crowd, and indeed there was only one other table with people when we arrived. We were seated and informed that our server would be with us shortly. We then say and watched another table be seated and a server took their orders. Then another table who also got something to drink and placed an order. We still haven't seen our server. I got up and walked to the bar where three employees were sitting and talking amongst each other. None of them noticed me as I approached and I waited for a couple seconds before interrupting and they still didn't notice me. I inherited and explained the situation. They did someone would be right there so I went back to my booth. It took another 5 minutes of them finishing up their conversation before finally someone arrived at our booth. The rest of our experience was just as slow. Even, what I assume was the manager he wore a green shirt different from the others, wood ask us if we wanted more drinks. He would then go off and talk to someone else and our regular server would come by asking about our drinks. She then bright us refills after a couple minutes. Mind you there are only 4 tables with people in them at this point. Overall not a great experience, I still give 3 stars because the food is just so good and there is so much of it! read more

Food is average, customer service is terrible! I wish I could give a negative star. I went to the American Fork, Utah location with my family on December 22nd 2016. After we ate dinner, my Dad paid with cash the $130.28 bill that was due. I offered to pay the tip and put the tip on my credit card. I paid $26.00 in a tip. The next day, I found out I had been charged the $26.00 on my credit card as well as $156.28. I called the restaurant and talked to the manager. I told her the situation and asked if we could get this figured out. She told me the people at the register that handled my transaction was new and that they could look into the situation. She called me back after an hour and told me there was nothing she could do and I would have to dispute the charge with my credit card company. She continued to tell me that they don't show a charge however, its clearly on my credit card statement. My credit card company is going to dispute the charge with Black Bear diner but I wont go back again to this restaurant. Way too much headache to have to deal with due to the lack of organization. read more

We were disappointed at Black Bear tonight. We were told the wait would be 15 minutes but we weren't seated for 30 and we didn't get our food for another 35 minutes. I could tell that they were really short staffed. The manager was in the back cooking. The food was OK. I ordered the turkey plate and the turkey was extremely dry. My husband ordered a club sandwich which was really tasty. The kids meals were supposed to come with ice cream but none ever came. They told me they had something for my birthday but we waited for a really long time after we were done eating but no one ever brought anything out. Sadly disappointed. Black Bear's always been my favorite restaurant. The food is always awesome. The portion huge, the price is right. Went there especially for the Sunday prime rib dinner. Was told by the waiter they don't do prime rib on Sunday. Strange, it's listed on the top of menu as the Saturday and Sunday feature dinner special (after 4pm) So I picked something else. Only to have him come back 15 minutes later to say they also don't have baked potato either. When, after what seemed like an eternity the meals brought to us the mashed potatoes and gravy are barely warm and the meats not much warmer. The wife's trout dinner looked a bit funny with such small portions on that huge platter, kinda looked pale compared to what we've been used too. Waiter never checked back to see if things were ok or if anyone needs a drink refilled. To be honest we felt a little neglected. I guess sunday's just not the day to go there. read more

We decided to go to black bear one morning. It was not a busy day and were seated quickly. Our server ignored us for 20 minutes and after welcoming us once. We didn't get our drink order or anything within that twenty minutes. We decided to leave. As we were leaving the manager stepped in and did a great job in helping us plus gave us free food. But what really disappointed me was that our original server went around telling all the other servers loudly that we needed to calm down and that he was busy. Then finally after not making eye contact with us that original crappy server came up to us and made a lame excuse about how he had a really long day yesterday and was tired. I don't care what your day is like, you be kind and respectful to people. You are a server, do your job or don't come into work. Very disappointed and will not be coming back to this location. If you've been to any other Black Bear diner DON'T go here you will be very disappointed. The size of your meal is half the size at the St. George one and disgusting. Bacon was burnt pancakes were raw in the middle it made me gag the waitress never came back to check or refill drink only to bring the check. I will not return to this location this was the 2nd chance and I will not waste anymore money there and I recommend no one else does either. read more
