Impressed with the health and safety measures! Had breakfast in their outdoor seating area and enjoyed a fresh meal (somehow seemed fresher than when we used to eat indoors prior to corona. The hash browns didn't seem like they'd been on the griddle too long, the fruit was fresh, the sausages cooked perfectly). Our waitress was very pleasant even though she has to walk to and from tables outside to inside to fill up our coffee, tables were spaced 6 feet apart, there was covering from the sun, and the staff took extra health precautions. There's bears EVERYWHERE you look! Not a bad thing if you're into restaurants dedicated to their themes. I got the Chicken and Waffle dish and the waffle was fantastic and the chicken itself was cooked very well but then breading on my chicken was pretty burnt and kind of took away from how juicy and good the actual chicken was. it came with a side of fresh fruit and the fruit wasn't as fresh as I expected... the cantaloupe was a weird and not crisp at all. Since Covid I have rarely eaten out at our local restaurants preferring instead to cook at home or get occasional take out. Yesterday my husband, son and I decided to have breakfast at Black Bear Diner and had a wonderful experience. The dining area was arranged outside under a tent in the parking lot with tables at a very safe distance. The food was delicious; my son and I ordered the eggs benedict special and my husband had the chicken fried steak. Yum! What made the morning so enjoyable was the great service we received from Michelle our server. She was very welcoming, attentive and demonstrated great care not only in serving us but maintaining the safety standards we should all follow. Great breakfast, great servers, great customer service! We were visiting Danville for a soccer tournament and the whole team needed a place to have breakfast, for our early game ended up at 9 AM. Black Bear Dinner was able to accommodate us along with another team that was at the restaurant at the same time. Our server Scott and his team were excellent! They took our orders in timely manner and with precision. Scott and his team went the extra step in pleasing everyone in the team, for example requesting the Mexican salsa for our eggs. I admire Scott's organizational skills to put all the orders together and charge them accurately by party per our request. We're here for a day in the Bay Area and our our way back to southern ca we stoped by to BBD and was told it was a 15 minute wait and was more like 45. The service was decent, the lady charged me the incorrect amount and got me right before getting in our car. I had left initially a $20 dollar tip which rounded my tab to $100. She "refunded" it back to our account and charged me again the correct amount but this time I only left a $10 tip as I felt that it was not my fault that she charged me the incorrect amount and still made me "wait" for the refund to process and wait it would take up to a week. Thankfully I can wait for the refund and take the hit of an extra $100 being out of our my account. That's the least of of it though, after she looks at the receipt and sees the tip was only $10 instead of the $20 I had first left she has the audacity to say "wow did you really only leave $10 for tip when it was more ?" And I said "yea why?" Her response was "wow ok thank you for you $10 tip on a $100 dollar tab". I just walked away as I did not want to verbally say some disrespectful things. What kind of person would get offended with a tip, let alone do it in front of all of her coworkers and other people around. I should have honestly asked for my tip back for being disrespectful. I'm not sure what the deal is here but the more we frequent this place the worse it gets. The biscuits are un-frickin-believably large but are always terrible. Not light and fluffy and if I'm being honest they're almost always cold and dry and dense and just plain nasty. Having two of those served with my meal makes me wonder who really is eating these things. I mean even if they were fresh and good i still can't see someone packing those down with a full plate of food ontop of it. Even alone they are more than a meal. I think they really need to focus on making small, but actually palatable, fresh biscuits. These are clearly reheated leftovers and its terrible. Besides that the rest of the food is decent but nothing to write home about. The biscuits are why i fell in love with black bear but this place just doesn't do them the way other black bears do. We made the mistake of ordering the corned beef hash and it was nothing like you'd think that dish would be. So I was really looking forward to having breakfast here. I had heard great things about Black Bear Diner. However, we had an okay experience here. My husband and I went with our 6 month old. While trying to fix something, my husband accidentally hit over his glass of water. He cleaned it up with all the napkins and they came by to offer more napkins. The employee who came by said she'd bring him more water and a new place mat, but she never did. Our waitress brought him some water after maybe 20 mins or so. Slept in too late this morning and had to run before getting breakfast. After a very late bus, I finally got in here with 38 minutes until the next bus came. My server seated me quickly and I ordered coffee and The Grizz, with hash browns and substituting the pancakes for French Toast. I checked my watch I was down to about 28 minutes. I considered skipping this next bus and walking into San Ramon since I would wait a full hour for the next one, but I finished a delicious and hearty, perfectly made breakfast with time to spare. Walked in, a party of 2 were ahead of us waiting to be seated. It looked like they were getting anxious from waiting (found out they had been waiting for 5min). They were seated about 5 min later. At that point someone came up and took our name for a "wait list" because they're cleaning tables. This entire time about half the restaurant is empty. Another 5 minutes go by, there's another party of 2 walks in (they're added to the wait list). Finally they guy at the podium calls our party of 2 and seats us in a section that was clean/empty from the moment we walked in. We order our drinks, they came, then we waited for 15 minutes and no one came to take our order. We left. TLDR: Spent 20+ min waiting and Blackbear. As you wait for your food to come out you begin to read the amazing story of how Black Bear Diner came to life. And before you know it, your food is right there in front of you. No matter what you order from this place you are guaranteed to either be nice and full with a clean plate or your full without being able to finish it all. There's nothing that sticks out about Black Bear Diner, I've been a few different locations and they just fall flat. Service is okay, wait is REALLY long on weekends and the parking lot is impossible. Food is only okay. I'm a fan of hot sauces and they make their own, they're pretty good! We go here only because they serve eggs and they're conveniently located near the freeway, but I wouldn't drive out of my way to go to Black Bear. If I could suggest something, however, it's to address the lighting. The lights above the tables probably belong over operating tables, they're so blinding and sterile, it actually made me start feeling sick after a while. Now I'll only eat at the tables in the middle and avoid the booths. In this spot before Black Bear was the most abysmal Denny's you've ever seen, but you went there anyway because they're convenient and open when you're drunk or hung over. We were greeted by very friendly hostess who immediately escorted us to our table, took our drink order and returned with the drinks in short order. Ray, our server promptly greeted us and took our orders...my wife ordered bacon, scrambled eggs, country potatoes with wheat toast while I ordered the homemade sausage, eggs over easy, country potatoes and wheat toast. The breakfast was superb! We have been to a number of Black Bear Restaurants in and outside the bay area and this particular location hit a home run. Service was excellent...thank you Ray. Well tried this Black Bear Diner for dinner ordered the 10oz prime rib, came with a small bowl of clam chowder soup which I couldn't eat because it wasn't to good, corn bread which was dry and crumbly the 10 oz prime rib, lbs was totally fat, did not order veggies because they were canned. While enroute to a meeting in San Ramon, I pulled off the freeway in Danville remembering that Black Bear Diner was conveniently located and I had been there before and liked the food and the service. Sat at the counter and was immediately waited on. Knowing what I wanted, I ordered breakfast immediately. The reason I'm writing and what stood out was there wasn't just one person taking care of me but all the wait staff including the Manager Evelyn stopped by to see if she and they could be of service. Unlike most places, the staff and management at Black Bear Diner work together to take care of their guests which highly resonated with me. Although they were relatively busy, Evelyn the manager took the time to engage me in conversation which made my visit very enjoyable. PS: The food was great!! read more

My family loves Black Bear Diner- we'll find one in between whatever cities we currently live in when it's someone's bday or a Holliday. When I heard about one opening in my home town I was STOKED. I can finally go to black bear whenever I want! But man, this location is bad. The worst I've been to. I gave them the benefit of the doubt at first because it's new and I thought they just needed time to work out the kinks. The kinks are still there. Here are some of the issues I've had: - The order is ALWAYS wrong. Always. Ask for no gravy, there's gravy. I asked for a couple eggs over easy tonight. The lady said "two scrambled eggs?" And I said no, over easy. "Ok! Two eggs over easy!" They were scrambled. - the food just isn't as good. I had a family member get the grossest piece of beef I've seen in years the other day. The chicken on my taco salad was really dry compared to usual. Another family member always gets their steamed veggies at other locations and loves them. Said they were hardly edible in Danville, didn't taste steamed. One night I sat at the counter, which is by the register. People were walking up and complaining all night. ROUGH. I'd recommend eating something else if you're in Danville, or go to the Pleasanton or Walnut Creek location. Edit: I went again and the food was better, more importantly the SERVICE was much better.
