Taken care of as soon as we walked in, it looked packed as well too. It's a casual ambience with low music playing in the background. The host sat us down and soon after our waiter came to get our order. Did not take long to get our food out. I got The volcano and my husband the chorizo breakfast burrito. The pancakes were hot warm and fluffy. They were sooo good. The potatoes were crispy, but I felt like they lacked seasoning, so we added some salt and pepper. No biggie. I don't normally leave reviews, but this experience was particularly bad. When we arrived it was not that busy. No one was waiting. Yet it still took 15-20 minutes before they were able to seat our party. It then took another 5-10 mins for a server to come and get our drink order. By then we were ready to order everything. It took a very long time for the drinks to come and our kids had had enough. They forgot to bring out one of the soups that went with a meal. Mixed reviews about the food around the table. The coleslaw was underdressed, potato was dry. When we were ready to pay, we heard the wait stuff talking negatively about our party. Not a good experience overall and I will never bring my guests visiting from out of town here again. I would definitely not call this establishment family friendly. read more

Well we both ordered from the A Little Less menu, and my husband got the chicken fried steak and I got the pot roast with a baked potato. We also asked for a side salad which I thought came with a cornbread muffin. When we got our food the salad was real fresh but when I opened up my baked potato it was a dark gray bluish color inside. Not a nice fresh and white fluffy potato. And then I went to open up the muffin just with my hands split it open and I couldn't do it and I had trouble cutting it with a knife it was so hard that we could not even bite into it. It's like it was put into a microwave one too many times and got real hard like bread does. We brought this to our servers attention and all she did was apologize and did not offer to have a speak with a manager which I didn't see anybody else there other than the cooks. At least we could have been offered a little discount or a dessert to go or a drink to go. We've been there many times before and now we know why there weren't very many people in there around dinner time. My pot roast had sliced carrots that were very hard literally they were just raw carrots when I was eating my pot roast it was crunching. I don't think we'll be going back sorry to say. Sometimes it is a great experience at Black Bear Diner and other times it's just bleh. Most of the wait staff are friendly but once in a while you can get someone who is having a bad day. All in all I recommend this place and eat there quite often. I give their food a thumbs up. read more

I've been craving the Hot Sausage Patty Breakfast for the longest time. Drove the 15 miles to this location only to be disappointed. Place was crowded, but no wait at the counter. Usually you get great service at a counter... not at this location. We waited 15 minutes to get our drink order in. We were ready to order, but the server wasn't. If you want good old fashion, home cooked meals, black bear, diner, tries to fulfill those type of dishes. Huge generous portions, but they also have smaller portions if you just wanna taste it.. The only issue I had was with their brown gravy, it seem to be instant and salty. Other than that their food was prepared to order. I believe the waitresses were kind of busy, and left a couple of customers dishes in the window too long. You're fried chicken dish is a half a chicken, fried deliciously to order. The Fresno location doesn't disappoint and impeccable. Amazing food, portions and service. The new CFS omelette is beyond amazing and the art direction with bears is charming. They have an impressive array of bear-themed merchandise at this location and the employees are wonderful. Normally I write extensive reviews but BBD is consistently so excellent it's not necessary. This is the fifth location I've visited and I love the excellent consistency. I love going to a new BBD location and this one was no exception. Haven't been here in a couple years. Unfortunately, I have to say that service has gone way down. We went during the lunch rush and there was one host working the front who was clearly overwhelmed. He was the only one taking payments, which left lines of people waiting to even be put on the list for seating. This lead to him getting confused about who had come in first and people getting out of order, including us, which is very frustrating when you've already been waiting. It probably took us 15 minutes to get seated, which wouldn't have been a problem if we weren't getting bumped on the list. Waitresses were coming in and having to just ask who was next, which could potentially create issues amongst guests. Once we got to our table, it took awhile to get our order in and the better part of an hour to receive our food. The waters were never refilled during the visit. We used to like this place but the understaffing has turned it into quite an unpleasant experience. I doubt that we will return because we really left unhappy today. As far as the food itself goes, when we finally received it, some things were good and some weren't. The biscuits are huge, impressive height. The veggie burger, however, is absolutely horrid. It was crumbly like sand and tasted like sand as well. The "fresh fruit" side is a sad couple chunks of melon. Good quality ranch dressing though. read more

Driving down Shaw looking for breakfast. We were going to settle for IHOP but then we saw Black Bear! Hubby and I were so excited to get a breakfast date and Blackbear was the perfect spot. There is plenty of parking close to the entrance. When you walk in you'll notice the country decor. I really love all the bear decor and merch for sale! There are shirts, slippers, mugs, stuffed animals, stickers, everything. They also have a lovely dessert display counter that is stocked with pies and sliced cheesecake and more. We were seated right away and I noticed it was pretty packed. Not uncomfortably but it was busy. We got a booth and we're given menus which looked like newspapers! It was SO cute! I love the newspaper menu idea for sure!! Only thing is you can see pictures of the food but oh well haha. Our waitress was really sweet and took our order with patience and answered all of our questions. I ordered the corned beef hash with country potatoes and a side of grits. My husband got an open faced breakfast sandwich topped with gravy and a side country potatoes and 2 sweet cream pancakes. It was a lot of food! We were so happy when we got our plates. The waitress gave me tips on how to eat grits because I hadn't tried them before. She brought extra butter so they could be nice and creamy. They were so good! The sweet cream pancakes were delicious and yes, sweet! They tasted like donuts! Mmm they were good. Yeah all our food was really delicious. Blackbear is pretty much our favorite spot for breakfast. The coffee is super hot. The food is amazing. The people are nice and attentive. Just an all around solid American diner. read more

My wife and I went to Black Bear on Sunday at 10:30 am. They told us that it would be a 10 to 15 minute wait. We only waited 5 minutes the most. We sat down got our drinks fast. I ordered the 2 eggs and ham breakfast. I really enjoyed it. The portions are big and worth the money. My wife ordered the turkey club. She really enjoyed it. It was made well, the fries were crisp and fresh. Even though it was busy we got our food quickly. This was my first time eating at this location and I was not disappointed. read more

I was not expecting such a spectacular menu. It had a wide variety and a lot of comfort food. I was able to get chicken fried steak and my friend got chicken avocado club sandwich at 8 AM in the morning. We were greeted by a very attentive and friendly hostess name Bella she was very kind and friendly and seated quickly in the perfect location. She made sure that we didn't need anything and checked up on us and let us know our waitress would come soon. We had a friendly server name Hector who came and was very attentive he checked in with us to make sure our drinks were filled and recommended different things on the menu. We ultimately went with a suggestion on the menu we loved it! When we got our food it was a hot and tasty chicken avocado sandwich with french fries it was huge and delicious. My chicken fried steak was accompanied with cheese grits it was so delicious I couldn't eat it fast enough. read more

Two of the 3 dinners were not very good. Ordered meatloaf, mashed potatoes with country gravy and coleslaw. Had to send it back as it came with brown gravy. Meatloaf was the texture of very purried meat, and the brown gravy didn't make it taste better either, no coleslaw but green beans. Flavor was not good and my dad was looking forward to a good meal. My meal was a patty melt, the cheese was a plastic texture and the bread was so hard. Fries were so salty. I didn't want to complain at the time but we should have said something as our meals were a waste of money. My family and I came to visit a family member who is in the hospital here in Fresno. We live in Northern California. We stopped by black bear diner for breakfast. The restaurant was very clean and the food was delicious. This was great after a long drive!!! We were a party of 8. Mari the manager was very nice and professional. Mari made sure that we were happy with everything. Fatima the server was great too. We appreciated that they were bilingual. We will definitely be back, if we are ever in town. We didn't take any pictures of the food because we were starving but everything was great!!! We even ordered food to go. I came here with my two nieces on 10/30/21 for a Auntie and niece date. The nieces at first didn't want to come as they were too pumped up to go to the park that food was the last on their mind so I made them have brunch before we go as I know they needed to feed their little bellies! I called before we arrived to make sure there wasn't a ridiculous wait and the lady said the wait was about 20 min which wasn't bad. I decided to take my nieces here to try something different and learn to enjoy new experiences. Upon arrival we were greeted by staff dressed in costumes from Micheal Meyers, Fred Flintstone and other creative characters which was fun!! We put our name on the wait list and it was probably a 5 min wait which wasn't bad. Once we got y he text notifications our table was ready we were seated immediately. Our server greeted us and the girls were playing with their kids menus. I initially got them two lemonades and a fresh squeezed orange juice for me a small as I can't really have too much acidic foods these days. The server came back with 3 fresh squeezed Orange juices which I informed her the kid drinks were suppose to be lemonade in which she apologized profusely and offered to replace them but the girls wanted their oranges and I told the girls they would enjoy the lemonade better but they insisted on still drinking them. They took a sip and said it was too much "hair" in it. Which I explained to them what fresh squeezed Orange juice is and it is PULP not hair it was interesting trying to explain that to a 7 and 5 year old. Our server vanished for a while so the girls needed to go to restroom and about when we came back they served our food. And I never had the opportunity to let the server know about the Orange situation until she came to check on us about an hour later and we were ready to go. The girls loved the food. The pancakes were delicious, the older niece practically finished her food. She ate all her bacon, eggs and sausage. The little niece only ate her bacon and few bites of her pancakes and was full. They didn't touch their Orange juices. My Light Scramble Chicken Sausage was so delicious which was about 7.5/10 it was tasty but needed some salsa for a kick. It came with fresh fruit and whole wheat bread. A pretty good meal. My fresh squeezed Orange juice was so good!! Our server apologized for the wait and she more than happy took the girls Orange juices off as they wanted lemonade in the first place. For the amount of food we had it was only $30 which for 3 people was not bad at all! We really enjoyed ourselves. The only negative I would say is that ANTS kept crawling all over the table scaring the nieces about 6 to 10 I killed :( so I think they have an ant problem but with all the sugars and jams everywhere I'm not surprised at all so minus one star for that. Overall, I enjoyed dining with nieces and service was pretty good. No complaints at all. I would definitely come back in a heartbeat as I feel it's WAY cheaper than Denny's in a way. Management really needs to take a good look at what they're doing here. 1) I wanted to order a baked potato for lunch with a side salad. I was told they were out of baked potatoes. Then I was told they could make one but it would take 45 minutes. I declined the baked potato. 2) We ordered two kids breakfast plates, my salad, and the tuna salad for my dad. Even though I opted not to get the baked potato we somehow still ended up waiting 40 minutes. That seems excessive regardless of what is ordered off their particular menu. Normally, in a well run restaurant, all kids plates should come out within 10 to 15 minutes... Our littles got super cranky and loud. It was exhausting waiting for their food. 3) on top of it taking 40 minutes for us to get the kids plates, they only brought out my side salad and left my dad to sit there without his food. I was raised to never eat before my elders. It was extremely uncomfortable for me to see my dad sitting there with nothing while all three of us had our plates. He is not only my elder, but a US Navy Veteran wearing his USS Hornet hat so its super obvious that he is a veteran. 4). When I explained to our waiter what I was frustrated/upset about he explained that we had arrived at a time when they were cutting down on staff. *Something like that should never effect the customers* that was my response. He went and talked to his supervisor who then came out and gave me a semi apology and then asked what could be done. I said that they should really take a good look at what their priorities are. Customers do not want super slow service, over cooked eggs and pancakes, and two different waiters resulting in confusion and incorrect orders. The supervisor ultimately removed the two kids plates from the bill... so yeah, after being there over an hour, hardly eating our food, and basically just having an unpleasant experience we left. We most definitely will not be going back to this Black Bear location. I hope they get their act together, for their employees as well as for their customers. We have been to other Black Bear Diner locations in California and Oregon that were wonderful so I know that they can do much better. read more
