I had no idea this place was tucked away near the mall! Decided to try Black Pelican for dinner. Love the door as you walk into the restaurant. Our waiter was on top of things. He was there to refill drinks at the perfect time, had a great sense of humor, and was very pleasant. For an app we tried the Cajun fish bites. They were good and weren't spicy by any means so if you are concerned about that, fear not. They honestly reminded me of chicken bites. I chose the Pecan crusted mahi which was made with some sort of red wine and fig reduction, mashed sweet potatoes and vegetables. The veggies were excellently seasoned. The sweet potatoes had great flavor as well. I think they were called Kahlua sweet potatoes. I didn't get as much flavor from the fish as I'd hoped. It seems like the side dishes stole the show. Flavorful food consistently done well. Came across them during the pandemic and has been a go to spot for lunch & even needed supplies. Considering we aren't huge seafood eaters I was even more impressed. Some of my favorites have been the rotisserie bbq chicken, pork loin, grilled chicken fajitas, & fried chicken. I've been here several times and NEVER does Black Pelican disappoint! Today we came to celebrate my sons birthday. Our entrées included: The Stationkeeper's, Flounder and Fried Oysters and Pelicans House made Crab Cakes and for dessert Coconut Creme Pie! Everything was just superb! Crab cakes were fresh with a light fried crust, the flounder was fried and was just awesome, and the Rib-eye was cooked to perfection. Did I mention the Coconut Creme Pie, Oh My! That was the bomb absolutely delicious Atmosphere was enjoyable and our waiter Leo took good care of us. Sitting arrangement sucks, (get ready this is going to sound like a math problem) if two people sit at tables next to each other theres no way someone can get up and use the restroom without bothering your whole side of the table and the table next to you. Rectangle table of 6, 3 on each side, table next to you is a round 4 person table. If you do the math 4 people have to get up(no place to move) for anyone to use the restroom on that side of the table. Waitress was great! When she would remember we existed. This whole ordeal took awhile... For the quality of food we received the place is EXTREMELY OVERPRICED. The pizza's go for about 11 to 15 dollars, the crust resembled a tortilla(that thin) and quite frankly it tasted like one. I ordered a margherita pizza which was the saddest excuse for any pizza. My daughter ordered a cheese pizza, when it arrived at the table her expression was "look like we make at home!!". Don't judge me, I have little ones and they like tortilla pizzas(maybe Ill start charging them!? Ha!). In all seriousness, I spent $100 here and left hungry. I can take the family to a nearby buffet and eat our hearts out for half the price. Very nice atmosphere!! Our waitress Kris was excellent. It was very busy Mother's Day weekend and she really held it together. My hubby had the Baked shrimp and crab. He said it was delicious! My aunt had the chicken and ribs and I had the fish duo. The fish duo was a perfect combination of sweet and spicy grilled fish over couscous. The sweet was cranberry and peaches, the spicy was a sriracha garnish. DELISH!! We will definitely return. read more

Okay so I'm from Virginia Beach, don't come to Chesapeake to eat much but I was in town for the weekend and me and a friend decided to eat here. Food sounds good reading the menu but when received the presentation, it makes no sense. I felt like Gordon Ramsay lol. I ordered a sweet tea which wasn't sweet. Tasted like a watery lemon drink lol. The waitress did tell us she was the only one making the tea because everyone else was busy so told us to be patient with her. We started with Off the rocks for our appetizer which was okay but the sweet griddle cake had a funny taste to it. Then I ordered the Salmon Super-B. The salmon was mehhhh. The broccoli wasn't steamed long and the drizzled pasta sauce on the top of it, I don't even know what that was supposed to be. The avocado was still hard and when I went to cut it with the side of my fork it slid across my plate and then the hard boiled egg on top. It was just an overall weird meal. The seaweed salad is what you serve at the Korean bbq with your kimchi sides. I'm not sure I'll be back here. A lot of elders were here. Soooo good!! We had dinner here with the in-laws, they are very picky with food and they are very impressed with it! The price is a little pricey but the serving is big and it's worth it! I had the baked shrimp and crab, the sauce was sooo good that everyone even tasted it and voted that I got the best among our food. The interior is really cool too and cool history of the restaurant. My husband and I were greeted and seated very quickly. Our waiter took our drink orders and we waited about 10 minutes before they arrived. We decided not order an appetizer and ordered our entrees after our drinks arrived. We never received the complimentary basket of pita bread, other customers that came in after us were served before us and I was on my second drink by the time our food was served (usually I'm still on my first drink when the food is served). Needless to say, our waiter was over tasked, he had 4 tables and a huge party of at least 12. If I could give 0 stars I would. The service was terrible our waitress seem to be in a hurry and not really cared for anything and seemed very uppity. We had to wait over 10 minutes just to get a simple refill on one of our drinks. She never even seem to care when I started to order and when I wanted one more item she said oh there's more. When I went to go speak to the manager about the waitress and how she acted, he seemed very calm cool and collective as if this is not the first time he's had this problem but blame the problem I'm being short staffed. He then began to tell me that he has never had a problem with that particular server. And basically just took her side and not over the customers viewpoint as to how we are being treated. The atmosphere is casual but a bit more upscale than the typical seafood restaurant. No hole in the table to throw your shells in. Fresh, warm pita pieces presented on arrival at the table. The accompanying steamed vegetables had just the right amount of crispness. The different fish selections at our table were properly prepared with attractive grill lines. When we needed a great meal here they greatly disappointed. My cousin and her boyfriend had just got in from a long flight so we had come here to recoup. My Popeye salad was pretty good but the wine I enjoy they decide to replace with something very dry and lackluster. The rest was awful! My husbands pizza was burnt so was another pizza ordered. Luckily my cousin had ordered a basic Cezar salad that was okay but overly salty. My daughter had ordered a kids cheese pizza that was burnt as well so sadly I sent it back for chicken strips that were way to hot. Who serves kids food to hot to touch for an adult? We were extremely disappointed with our meals and desert. The sword fish was thin, soft and had very little flavor. The other dish was the crab cakes. They are big, but they tasted like they were deep fried in old oil. But the worst was the desert. I absolutely love creme brulee and make it myself. My wife and I have been wanting to try this place for a while now. We finally checked them out for lunch today. Love the atmosphere and decor looks like you are on a ship with all the nautical decor around. Customer service was good. Love that they had a menu specifically for lunch. For Apps I had the spicy fish bites which had different types of fish like Rockfish and Mahi Mahi cut in to pieces and deep fried. Loved it. My wife had a cup of she crab soup. She liked the taste but was not happy with the lack of crabmeat and she ran into a few shell peices. For the entrees I had the oyster basket with fries and broccoli. My wife had the shrimp basket with fries and veggie medley. Both were good. Wish the shrimp were a lil bigger and had more oysters but both were good. We will def return for dinner. read more

Wife wanted seafood and saw Black Pelican in Chesapeake listed as recommended. Sorry, one of the worst dinning experiences in a long time. Waiter greeted us and told us specials were at the bottom left of the menu and he would get out water while we looked. Was looking for fried oysters and saw "catfish and oysters" but nowhere on the menu was there a listing for oysters, shrimp, or seafood platter. Did notice that the prices were quite high for a noisy pub. Asked about oysters and the waiter made excuses, but did say they could whip up an oyster platter, though he was not sure how much it could cost but thought it would be about $28.00. I told him that was okay and I would just have a cobb salad. when everything arrived, the salad was placed on the table, and the waiter told me that he forgot to ask what salad dressing I wanted. He had. While we were waiting, we saw a card listing the daily specials. Being that it was Thursday we noted that the daily special, NOT listed on the menu, was Prime Rib dinner for $13.00. I guess we were supposed to know. I tried to used the table salt, but it was clogged up. I unscrewed the top and saw that the salt was caked in the shaker lid, and it was full of rust and other STUFF? Around the screw part, under the lid, it was filthy. Wonder when it was last cleaned. After the meal we pointed out the Specials to the waiter and informed him that he did not tell us about them. His response; Oh, its always there, you can try it the next time. I came here for lunch with my best friend and her daughter. We decided to try it since we were in the area. We both ordered the chef's pasta, which was a penne pasta in a creamy she crab soup sauce with shrimp and assorted vegetables. We both thoroughly enjoyed the pasta and were fully satisfied. Although our food was enjoyable, there were a few things that could use improvement. 1. Our server was nice enough; however, when asked for recommendations she did not seem very familiar nor convincing with any of the menu. Also, she waited until my glass was almost completely empty before even asking if I would like more to drink. (This is a pet peeve of mine since I have been a server myself.) 2. The kid's menu was not very attractive. My best friend decided to order a side of fries for her daughter instead of ordering a meal because the prices were not reasonable for a smaller portion of food. 3. They offered complimentary pita bread with our order. The pita bread wasn't anything spectacular and I almost wondered where it fit with the menu since the majority of the menu was seafood. My parents went for an anniversary dinner, I am writing this on their behalf. Both ordered flounder and shrimp dinner with rice pilaf. Shrimp was decent, however, the flounder tasted frozen and the rice pilaf was absolutely terrible. They ordered a bottle of Proverb Chardonnay which will never be ordered again. On top of that, the waitress was very unprofessional. She put the bottle of wine down without a chiller, and continuously forgot after being reminded. While taking their order, she laid out all of her receipts all over the back of my mother's seat on the booth. After a terrible experience, they will not be returning, and will take their money to other establishments. Hopefully Black Pelican will be able to fix their establishment, as it is a genuine surprise that they were able to get away with such a horrendous night. read more

I'm glad we didn't pay the full price on it. It was original about a $16 pizza and was quite small. (Maybe it was the special's size. I'm not sure) It was good. We ordered the Chesapeake Bay pizza and once we saw it ordered two side salads. They also serve you pita bread with butter at each table. This was my second time visiting today & thankfully, we had David as our server again! He is amazing! My friends and their daughters decided to have a spontaneous lunch today and it was super yummy! There was no wait at lunch. We got sat at a round table and felt far away, so we asked David if we could move to a booth in the corner and he didn't mind one bit! We started off with calamari and we each got entrees. Everything came out in a timely manner & was delicious! David kept the table free of clutter and our drinks refilled.
