Nice little cocktail bar with diverse range of seating options. A wide bar with stools, tables with stools, and booths. Drinks were pretty good, but are on the pricier side. Ambiance was cute and it definitely seems like a popular place. I didn't see a menu, so if you aren't familiar with alcoholic drinks, get ready to Google some! My only gripe would be that the music is quite loud. I would prefer that they turn down the volume a bit so it's easier to have a conversation. Even when you're sitting directly next to a person you have to raise your voice a ton. If you're in a booth, you probably won't be able to hear the person across the table unless you really yell. Honestly felt a little misled by the premise? According to all reviews and their website, this is a bespoke cocktail bar where the customer's personal preferences are used to craft a drink. We were somewhat surprised when our order was taken that the bartenders didn't ask if we were familiar with the concept, or if we wanted a custom drink, so we ordered "something like a penicillin" and "something like a whiskey sour." No follow up questions on our flavor preferences or anything that would customize the drink. We ultimately received a normal penicillin and a whiskey sour. Unsure if it was on us to say we wanted the drinks customized/personalized? But for that to be the premise of the bar, the bartenders did not really play along or have a conversation with us. The drinks were sadly pretty weak and nothing special. We probably won't return if there's no crafted menu and the bartenders won't go out of their way to craft special cocktails. read more

Molly Malone's was closed and the Kibitz Room was too much further. About the best thing to say is they have the weakest cocktails closest to the Writers Guild building on Fairfax and Third. But don't expect to find the Coach and Horses reincarnated. Neither Orson Wells nor F. Scott Fitzgerald would have been caught dead in this place. The Grey Goose martini tasted like dishwater and made both of us sick. Even a plain Coca-Cola from the gun was flat and over-syrupped. The black and white photographs of mid-20th century Hollywood icons were interesting but the rest of the decor was odd (e.g. repro Tiffany-style lamp sconces with 80s style granite counters and too-clean copper (tin?) looking ceilings. The music was outright schizophrenic -- Sinatra, acoustic Dylan, and Johnny Cash. And why is there an ATM there if the bar doesn't take cash? Bottomline, a 'blue collar' cocktail bar isn't an achievement in ironic watering hole naming, it's an oxymoron. A tall boy of PBR in a brown bag has more of a working-man's vibe. For starters, the first time I went here I was overcharged, which I didn't notice when I paid because their paperless system doesn't display line item orders. I reached out to the bar and never heard back - not cool. If you go here, count your drinks and double check your tab. About the bar: there's nothing blue collar about this place. It's a mixology bar where you can expect to drop $15 per cocktail and the service takes time. The ambience inside is cool, old Hollywood photos, but as you stare out the windows you're looking at a CVS parking lot and listening to all the noise of the traffic on Fairfax. If you're doing a neighborhood bar crawl, this is in between Molly Malone's and Kibitz Room (both divier bars, which I prefer) so it's worth checking out, but don't forget to check your tab. read more

My friend chose this place because of reviews that there was hip hop here so we strolled in on a Saturday night expecting some hip hop music. The outside is very non descript but the inside is chic and clean and the lights are low with candlelight. I'm giving this place 4 stars for the drinks and bartenders but 2.5 stars for the music that felt like this place was having an identity crisis. The music was more alternative rock and did not seem like the theme this place was going for. The bartender was awesome though. They have no menus for cocktails here but the bartender will ask you what base alcohol and flavors you typically like and tailor your drink to what you say. The cocktail was also only $10!! That is so ridiculously cheap for a custom made drink in LA. I told the bartender vodka and citrus and my friend said gin and citrus. My drink was delicious and blended very well. It was vodka with fresh lemon juice with orange and grapefruit bitters and a fresh orange peel. My friend liked hers as well which was gin, blackberries, and pomegranate. I wish we had had more time to try different flavor profiles but they really know how to mix cocktails here. I'm definitely coming back here if I want fancy cocktails at a decent price point! read more

Located a stones throw away from The Grove, the Blue Collar is my local cool hipster bar. Super attractive bartenders making drinks for super attractive patrons. Very fun place for people watching. The music here is great, playing all the oldies, 90's, etc hits. Although I got here late, the place was bustling, but not scary packed (much appreciated). Totally perfect bar for the evening. If I wasn't trying to impress my cousin with my knowledge of cool bars, I probably would have gone to Molly Malones down the street (quieter, definitely not as cool). Swung by last night while in the area to see if they still had the Rolodex and a card with my name/drink on it. They had a full house due to an event that was just wrapping up and I'm not sure if this was for the event or just because (as I remember them offering it in the past), but they had a cute little cheese plate on the bar anyone could help themselves to (nothing fancy, but a nice gesture nonetheless). I found a spot at the bar and ordered a drink. There's no menu; it's speakeasy style, so you order something by giving a spirit and a flavor preference and the bartender will whip something up. I was gifted a delightful gin cocktail that we coined the Miss because that is how he greeted me. It was a great starter cocktail and had I not imbibed in three more, I'd prob remember what it all entailed. The Rolodex caught my eye and I asked if my card was still in there (your name + your cocktail of choice) even though it had been 3+ years since my last visit. Low and behold, it was! Great drinks!!! The first time I came here I came with my husband and with another couple and it was PACKED! The bouncer told us that there was a private event so there might not be any room, well he was right so we ended up leaving after a few minutes. The second time we decided to come and there was no private event. When we went inside there was room for people to sit and people to stand around. This place is extremely small but it's so comfy. After having dinner at Animal, we were strolling down the street looking for a good nightcap place (that's not in the Grove) and came across this place. A thick black velvet curtain was covering the entrance and there was no window to peek into, so we weren't quite sure what to expect, but loved it once we stepped in. This place has no menu, you just tell them your spirit of choice and types of flavors you like, and they create something for you on the spot. I asked for a gin-based cocktail that was herbal and earthy, and they came pretty darn close to what I imagine. One tip: If you want good quality liquor, ask for the shelf - they'll default to well unless you specify, which I totally get and appreciate, but seriously people, I want the good stuff. Nice, low-key crowd, clearly attracts some regulars, and the service was friendly and laid back. I have a feeling your experience will largely depend on which bartender you get, but I'm looking forward to my next visit to see how it compares. I do wonder how you end up in their rolodex, must figure that one out sometime! :) The place is not that big, but we had no problem grabbing seats right at the bar on a weeknight. Well, hello Blue Collar. Where have you been? Actually: where have I been? I've been meaning to visit for some time, but somehow never made it out. Now I can tell you: I'll be back many times. I just need to find the right trench coat to wear as I toss back the heavy curtain guarding the entrance and amble up to the bar. They're taking a concept I enjoy -- a speakeasy-style cocktail bar with no official menu -- and removing the pretentiousness and BS. I mean, what you should do is tell them what kinds of flavors you're into, and let them come up with something stellar for you to sip on. However, if you have something specific in mind, or want to grab a standard well drink, that's just fine with them. Lighting is low, I'm in love with their patterned tin ceiling, and I'm even more in love with their shelves full of bottles. It's set up like a grand library, with a simple but charming moveable ladder to give them access to those top shelf beauties. Here's the most important part: happy hour. No menu. Just drinks that is made to order based on your preferences. I told the bartender that I am a fan of: "lychee, honey, vodka or tequila, have fun with it!" and he produced this tasty cocktail that was everything I asked and more. There was a twist to it that I really enjoyed.
