Selected this restaurant from a list for restaurant week and we are pleased we did. The food was absolutely perfect. The server mentioned the chef was from New Orleans which inspired the special menu for Restaurant Week, well all of the items need to be permanently added to the menu. The Corn and Crab bisque reminded of another restaurant Copelands in Jacksonville and I was thrilled to know someone here makes it. Sausageband Alligator Cheesesteak may make you pause but the gator was cooked perfectly and the flavors blended together perfectly. Some restaurants play it safe but I'm glad the chef put his own homegrown flavors into the menu, definitely made it stand out. For my main entree u selected the Braised Lamb Shank, which was covered in a tomato sauce gravy that paired well with the creamy grits. And our server "Brittany " was great as well. Had a REALLY great meal here when recently touring the city on the way to Florida. The shrimp and grits were excellent! Creamy grits topped with perfectly cooked shrimp in a sauce that was a medley of flavors. The grilled chicken salad with Gorgonzola, fresh spinach, pecans and a nice light dressing was spectacular. My husband had the shrimp and grits and said it was one of the best he's ever had and he gets it everywhere we go. Ribeye was cooked to perfection and delicious. Bread pudding was surprisingly good. Our party of 3 walked in for a late lunch (around 3pm) after several hours tooling around Savannah. The outside seating is extremely limited (seriously, like two tables for two) but we were immediately seated at a table next to bright window inside a normally fairly dark setting. Frankly, even in early April the air conditioning was a welcome reprieve from the humidity, which is admittedly low this time of year. The location right on the river is great and we enjoyed watching the giant cargo ships go by. Most importantly, the food was terrific and our server was very attentive and knowledgeable. We all ordered from their sandwiches menu - a burger, the blackened fish, and a crab cake sandwich. Both the crab and fish sandwiches were served with a (chipotle?) tartar sauce, which had great flavor. The crab cake was the smaller of the three dishes and could have had more texture if it had a few more crab chunks (vs being all shredded crab), but the flavor was nice. The blackened tilapia was done very well and was served with the reddest tomato I've seen this early in the season. It was yummy! And the burger was truly a crowd pleaser. The patty went well beyond the limits of a large Kaiser bun and was cooked to perfection. It was thick and juicy with perfectly melted cheddar cheese and bacon on top. The burger is also served with a house made steak sauce, which our server said had "a bit of a peach flavor." We found it to be somewhat sweet + tangy, along the lines of a honey mustard, and we happily sopped up the remaining sauce with our fries. It was all good! My only suggestion (beyond larger crab chunks in the crab cake sandwich) was for the pasta salad, which was a little dry and bland. We were told it had artichokes and that would have added a lot of flavor; if it did, the artichokes were so small that I missed them entirely. Dear Boar's Head ..thank you for consistently bringing us here for years. Me and my husband discovered this place a few years back and come here specifically just for the filet and the ribeye. The flavors are robust and the char of the steak makes it sooo good. And we've been to an abundance of steak houses. Not sure if it's the must in the dark room or the fact that you sitting in a building so full of history. Prices here are fairly average. The shrimp cocktail was $9 for 5 rather small 41/50 shrimp. And $12 for oyster Rockefeller with small oysters. Our server was great exhausted from a ling st. Patrick's Day! Overall she was attentive to our table and took well care of us. Drinks here are pretty good. Located across the street from the river and walking distance from the busiest bars and other restaurants. We always come here to eat when we are in Savannah. read more

We stopped in Savannah for an overnight stop on the way home and chose to eat dinner here after seeing the reviews . Food and service was excellent. We are on a Sunday eve and it was not crowded. This place is a local gem with FRESH seafood! Yes fresh seafood with no farm raised aftertaste! The service was attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu! It's a small menu however it does have something for everyone! The ambiance of the place is very southern and cute it's also very quite! There is one chef that makes all the meals so you can thank him for the peace because everyone is too busy eating then talk! Went here for lunch with my family on Saturday. Had the special which was a peach BBQ sandwich and it was good but nothing special. Had a cocktail and it was excellent. We were starving and somewhat in a hurry. The streets were packed so we bolted into this cool pub. Just like walking into a real one across the country lines. I had a peach sangria and the kids had Shirley temples. Service was exceptional. We had the chicken club which was really good and the fries were fabulous. The fish sandwich was fabulous. The oysters rockefeller is a bit overrated-- if the oysters were bigger, maybe it would be worth it. The shrimp cocktail was highly overpriced and nothing special. The ribeye lacked any kind of char and was quite one-dimensional. But the swordfish was delicious! Granted, it probably would've been better with the angel hair pasta, but I have my reasons and I appreciate the chef for accommodating my unorthodox side choice (mashed sweet potatoes). The key lime pie is among the best I've ever had! Lastly, you can't beat the location/view and ambiance of the restaurant. Great date night spot! read more

After so many great meals over a 5 day visit, Boar's Head Grill broke the streak with a big disappointment. On a positive note, the she crab soup was awesome, better than all the others I've tried. Deep rich flavor with that hint of sherry you want. All down hill from there. Caesar salad was like lettuce with mayonnaise, no flavor. Barely ate much of it. The BBQ shrimp app was good but 4 smallish shrimp was placed on top of a Cole slaw that was much too heavy on the mustard for my taste. Neither of us could eat it. I had the crab stuffed shrimp over angel hair pasta. They must have forgot to put some sort of sauce over the pasta because it literally had no flavor. There was a puddle of water under it in the plate from not being drained all the way. I had to add a lot of bread butter and salt and pepper just to give it some seasoning. The 4 medium shrimp were ok but the crab stuffing was undercooked. My wife had the salmon and although the flavor was great, it was mostly raw and cold except for the outside edges and had to be sent back. Wasn't in the mood for sushi. It wasn't busy at all when we arrived and the kitchen was not slammed so not sure why the problems. Don't eat much of that. Service was great and atmosphere was a typical pub setting. Nothing special. Plenty of other places to go read more

The inside of the restaurant is amazing. It is very historical and has a lot of character to it. At Boars Head Grill and Tavern I ordered a side salad and their barbecued shrimp. I was a bit disappointed in the side salad because it was only lettuce and tomato, nothing else. The balsamic was good and slightly on the creamy side. The barbecued shrimp was great. Ate here on my first night in Savannah! Really went into here looking for shrimp and grits and boy did I get it! At first my friend and I walked in and the hostess asked us what name the reservation was under and I was nervous because we surely didn't have a reservation lol. We ended up getting a small table at the corner of the bar by a window. The bar area ended up being loud but what can you expect. We got two pieces of complementary bread and it was good and held us over until our entrees. The two bartenders alternated on who was serving us and they were attentive and quick! The space was really nice and the wait staff were super nice and attentive. I hate to leave just "ok" reviews but I expect more from my seafood especially when visiting a coast. I had the fried shrimp, which was described on the menu as "cornmeal battered, lightly fried". Unfortunately the shrimp were overcooked and the breading on the shrimp was the most unusual I've ever eaten. It looked as if it was coated in cornbread batter and it was very thick. I picked off all the crust and ate the shrimp, but was extremely disappointed. My husband had the burger, which was fine, as it was just a burger and it was cooked as ordered. We grabbed a key lime pie to go and in my opinion was way too sweet. We also wanted to try the Profiterole, but they said the ice cream was melting too fast, so they didn't want to serve it that way, just a little disappointed. read more

My family took a small Savannah detour while on our way to NC to visit family and my husband chose to eat some lunch here before we got back on the road. First off, I had to take off a star for the service. When we walked in we were seated at a table (with our two small children) and then left there for a good 10 minutes before anyone came and greeted us or even asked if we wanted water. So, we decided it was time to leave. As we got up from the table a server finally came over and took our orders. We decided to stay and give it a chance. Granted, there were only two other tables being served at this time. It wasn't busy. I truly felt like they forgot we were there (I don't know how with our loud two year old). Even though the tavern is mostly known for their seafood I opted to be on the safer side with a burger because I don't take risks like that on a road trip. haha We got a kid's hot dog meal for our kiddos and split it and my husband got the po' boy sandwich. The food was actually pretty good and we enjoyed it. I wish I had a chance to try some other stuff but I was pretty full by the end. So, as it came time to leave my son (he's 2) needed a diaper change and BOTH bathrooms do not have any type of changing table. So, we were forced to walk to our car (which was packed to the brim ) and change our son there. Isn't there a law that states that you MUST have a changing station in your bathrooms? Or is GA exempt from this? I know the building is old but come on. This is a tourist destination. Parents have kids and this is a necessity. I would consider fixing this issue. read more

Every time I come to Savannah, Boars Head Grill and Tavern is my go to restaurant if there is a debate over where to eat. I've personally never had bad service or a bad meal here. Unquestionably the best fried green tomatoes around. Also, if you've never had Shrimp and Grits and can handle a bit of Cajun heat, I highly recommend you try them here. Tonight was no exception to the norm I'm used to with this restaurant. Our server was friendly and attentive, the Fried Green Tomatoes were on point as always and my friend and I were aiming for lighter fare this evening so we both got a crab cake appetizers and the spinach salad (tossed with Gorgonzola cheese, grilled red onion, currants, pecans, and balsamic vinaigrette). Both were awesome. I will certainly be back and continue to encourage friends and family to quit debating where to go to lunch/dinner in Savannah and just head straight to Boars Head Grill and Tavern! read more

Found this restaurant to celebrate my cousin graduating thanks to Yelp. We had a 6pm reservation but got there around 5:30, 5:45 and they had no problem accommodating us. Joe took care of us and he was very efficient. There was a $5 drink special called the Savannah beach tea which was similar to a long island. My cousin had that and enjoyed it. We ordered oysters, fried green tomatoes and crab cake as an appetizer. We were also given bread. The crab cake was good but I wasn't a fan of the fried green tomatoes, they were a little too acidic and under seasoned for me. I ordered the shrimp and grits which was a good portion size and delicious! I ended up having to get a to go box. Overall we had a blast and were glad we had chosen this restaurant! read more

We had a nice visit to this establishment. Thankfully my husband had the right idea when he suggested we call ahead. It was about a 40-minute wait so I went ahead and put my name on the list. We received a call when our table was ready and although it took a while to find parking our table was still waiting and available when we arrived. We received a very warm welcome. The tables were spread out a good distance. Our waitress was also very kind and attentive. We noticed most of the servers wore face shields with no masks. I think it made my husband a little uneasy. I figure it was to cut down on communication issues. All in all our service was fast and the food delicious. We had She-Crab soup to start. It was hearty and had a really nice flavor. Thicker than the she-crab I'm used to, but I still enjoyed it. We were also given their sourdough wheat bread and butter for the table. Super yummy! We gobbled up two baskets full. For dinner, I had the baked oysters and he got the shrimp and grits, which came recommended by a local. My oysters were good. Not the best, I prefer charbroiled, but still tasty. My husband cleaned his plate, I'm not a fan of grits so I didn't try them but I had a couple shrimp and loved them, the creamy sauce they were served in was so good! I wouldn't hesitate to return. Our last night of vacation and we went to dinner at Boars Head Grill. I had their special of the night, Mahi Mahi with mashed potatoes and sugar snap peas. Russ had the stuffed shrimp with asparagras and angel hair pasta. It was delicious, we cleaned our plates and then ordered chocolate infused pecan pie to take back to the room. First let me say this a great location in the riverfront. It is a quaint old building with what appears to be original floors and brick walls. That being said, we were seated and hadn't even had a few to look at the menu when our server came over and asked what we would like to drink. We explained nicely that we were just seated and we hadn't had a chance to look at the cocktails yet. We asked for waters. She stood there for a moment as if to say hurry up. She finally left and didn't come back to take our drink order for about 10 minutes. By that point we had made our selections not only for cocktails but appetizer and entrees. When she came back she took our order and we had to stop her from leaving our table to give her the app order. Then she left again and handle three other tables with their orders. One was seated after us and they were getting their full orders taken. I tried to catch her eye but she refused to give us eye contact. Our drinks were delivered and she finally came over to take the rest of our order. We ordered the bbq shrimp appetizer and it was ok. It was nearly Luke warm but after the service we had encountered with our server we decided to eat it at that temperature. She brought over a bread basket. The bread was hot and soft with the butter easy to spread. When we had finished the bread she came over again and asked if we would like to have our entrees. Really?! You're a server and we are hungry, of course we want our food. I ordered the tilapia with a rice mixture and a lemon butter caper sauce. The fish was so hot I burnt my mouth on it but the rice was cold. My hubs orders the filet. It was smaller than he had expected and was served with a baked potato- nothing spectacular. The steak was cooked to order but underwhelming. We got the trifle for dessert and it was unbelievably delicious! In my opinion it was the best thing there! Not a terrible experience but wouldn't come Back because there are just so many better places in Savannah. High marks for the fluffy delicious cheddar grits. But averaged with the other parts of the meal I can only give 3 stars. By far the most disappointing part of the meal was the "She crab soup." This regional dish is what I look forward to enjoying while visiting Savannah but was hardly recognizable--it was a brown stodgy goop. The appetizer of broiled oysters Rockefeller were ok. The salmon with BBQ sauce were ok as well. With some tweaks to the menu here and there this place could be so much better. We stopped in here before we went on the River boat for a drink. It's a really cute little restaurant and their food looked amazing. We only got drinks, but those were good too. Fast service at the bar. They give go cups like everyone else so you can walk around with your drinks if you want. I tried the beach tea. It was really good. I had such a great experience at Boars Head! My boyfriend and I sat at a table right next to a window with a view of the river! The waiter and hostess were both super friendly! Our waiter gave us some great recommendations from the menu at Boars Head. The bread was warm and the butter was whipped and easy to spread--the ideal pre-meal snack. I got the burger and it was SO good. I'm normally not a finish the entire sandwich person, but I did in fact eat this entire burger because it was so tasty with the steak sauce on the side. My boyfriend got the famous shrimp and grits and he loved his choice. All around a great experience! I also really enjoyed the ambiance of the place! read more
