For what you'd think based on location and appearance would be a tourist trap, there's surprisingly good food here. BBQ shrimp appetizer was reasonably tasty, though it would have benefited from more of a sear on the grill. Mixed greens salad was simple, fresh and delightful for the salad course. Shrimp and grits was very nice - simply shrimp, red bell pepper, butter, creole spices and chunks of andouille surrounding gentle cheese grits. I think I demolished the plate in no more than a few minutes. Low Country Bouillabaisse was full of fish, clams and shrimp, and the broth was quite tasty. Makes for a pretty big meal. This is a fun rickety old place in a cool location with above average food. Would not hesitate to return. read more

I just feel like a $41 plate should knock my socks off. The presentation is lacking. I had a $41 plate and my tea was served in a plastic cup and I had a single paper napkin. It just doesn't add up quite honestly. The filet was good and I enjoyed the bbq shrimp, but it wasn't worth the price. This meal should also be served with a vegetable. We were given two slices of bread in the basket. When I asked for more we were told they typically don't give refills on bread ‍ seriously? I spent $125 + tip for two people and you want to be stingy with bread? The price of the food doesn't match the quality, experience, or presentation. We had such high hopes for this place. We had 5:00 reservations and got there a bit early. They don't start seating until 5:00 so we sat at the bar and enjoyed a Smithwick's on draft. We were promptly seated at 5:00 and presented menus. That is pretty much the good. Now for the bad. Our server, and I won't use her name, simply came to the table and stood there with her pad and pen. Never introduced herself, never greeted us. Didn't mention any specials or fresh catches. Just stood and waited for us to order. I know there were specials because another server was welcoming her tables, introducing herself, and informing about off menu specials. I ordered the she crab soup as an appetizer, the low country bouillabaisse as a main, while my wife ordered the crab stuffed shrimp over linguine. Mine was good, not bangin', but it had flavor. My wife's was awful. It was dry, clumped together, and there was no crab. It was basically all bread crumb. It was supposed to be in butter and lemon sauce. It was bone dry with just a hint of butter. When we told our server she said "spaghetti does that". So we asked for take home boxes. She said ok and left. She came back without boxes and asked if we were finished so she could take our food plates away. I again asked for boxes, she left. She came back again with no boxes, so I asked again. This time she at least brought them. We combined my sauce and left overs with the dry pasta as that would be the only way we'd ever eat it. For the first time in my life I DID NOT leave a tip. We seemed like a bother to our server. The table next to us fared no better with her. They asked for their check before the food came because they had a tour and it was taking so long to get their food. With the rich foodie scene in Savannah I really expected better. Needless to say it was a waste of nearly $100, and next time we will eat at another establishment. read more

What a fabulous place to eat. This was the first restaurant we dined in at since pandemic restrictions were being lifted. It was immaculate. Staff were all wearing masks. Table was disinfected before we were seated. Service was wonderful. There were only a few other diners late afternoon on a Sunday in Savannah. Food was very, very good. Drinks were awesome. Not bad. Wonderful spot on the patio for people watching along the riverfront. Perfect for grabbing an appetizer and a couple of drinks in the late spring afternoon. I tried the special, a bacon wrapped shrimp bbq on a bed of jicama (which they apparently ran out of and unfortunately used cole slaw instead.) The flavors would have stood out more if they weren't drowned in bbq sauce. The crabcake was much more promising, loaded with crabmeat and paired with a creamy sauce. They had run out of most everything on tap, so the beer selection was slim. Service was good and people were friendly. read more

On our way back from FL, we spent a night in Savannah. We stayed on the river and had a walk down River St at dinner time. We looked at all the restaurants along the walk and decided to backtrack to Boar's Head. I wanted a great ribeye - my favorite food - and they were the only ones who had it in the section we walked - and, we're a fan of BH meats anyway. So, we sat by a window overlooking the river and began ordering. The she-crab soup was creamy and flavorful and we had fresh french bread to dip into it, lovely and it hit the spot; along with the jalepeno poppers that were suprising - in the best way! Not breaded and fried, but fresh jalepenos, sliced in half, baked or sauteed(?) with a small amount of cheese and a ton of premium bacon - to die for-- So good! Hubby got the filet and BBQ shrimp - flavorful, quality meat cooked to perfection and lightly sauced shrimp, not gloppy with sauce, also perfectly cooked. Now about that ribeye - It was the most tender and perfectly cooked steak I've had in a good while! Plenty of soft marbling and fat to render that AMAZING flavor and tenderness! I ordered it rare plus and it was exactly that with perfect grill marks and all - I can't say when I've had a steak that delicious - it's been a while! I opted for cheese grits as my side and they were completely amazing! Soooo creamy and full of flavor and cheese! Asparagus was the veg of the day and it was fine but with the steak and grits being what they were, I cared little about the asparagus to be honest. Service was also friendly and great, as was the black walnut Old Fashioned that was perfectly made and delicious, but I just needed to talk about the food more because it was truly a wonderful dinner overall and arguably the best meal we had in our 5 days in FL and 1 night in Savannah. The Hostess City of the South...Savannah is a beautiful place. You will find plenty of good food around the riverfront and just even off the beaten path a little further from the water. I had heard very good things about this place from of the team members that traveled down with us for the short trip. I decided to call just a little bit early and they were able to set the 7 of us on a Friday night without any issues. This place had a smaller menu, but the food was actually better than I expected. Although a little pricier for your meal, it was reasonable and worth it. Not a single complaint around the table the waitress was very nice to top it all off. HIDDEN GEM Call to see if they're open! On Google, it said the restaurant was closed but lo and behold, this restaurant was open and ready for customers! Don't let appearances fool you, this old riverside building has a homey dining area and unique bar inside-giving it a modest touch to an impeccable restaurant. Brian was our server and we were delighted by his service and help with picking drinks (the Cranberry Mule is to die for!) We dined with families and couples alike, everyone seemed to be enjoying their delicious food and beautiful view of the river. The music was great, lighting was just right, and the desserts are impressive. I honestly can't believe the prices- way too low if you ask me! I'm sure I would've paid at least $75 more if we had been to the other swanky restaurants nearby. I'm honestly amazed we were able to get a reservation at a place this good! Made a pit stop here for lunch during a road trip. Very cute, quaint little place, love the brick interior. Water front view made for a nice lunch scenery. You do have to walk on literal rock/stones to get to the place. Not an issue for most but I have knee problems so that was a little rough getting to it. I ordered the chicken salad croissant sandwich. It was good, could of used a little more salt or seasoning in the chicken salad but overall very good. I can tell they use quality ingredients, fresh chunks of white chicken breast meat, not too much mayo or heavy at all. My husband and brother also enjoyed their entrees: cheeseburger and chicken club on croissant. All their dressings are in house made and they do not have ranch lol. I asked for some but they don't really have any cream based dressings, mostly vinaigrettes. They give free bread and butter, the rolls were warm and fresh. Prices are very reasonable. I think, Boars Head is like the 'cheers' of the river walk. Cozy neighborhood bar where you're a friend with everyone by the time you walk out. For those who are curious, it has nothing to do with the Boar's head meat I have gotten at Bylery's. My friend and I didn't have food, drinks only. However, the experience was lovely. Our bartender, Tyler, was very kind and personable. He entertained us with his witty banter and was very professional. I am glad I don't live locally, this place would probably get a lot more of my paycheck eat week. Stop on in, for a drink at least. The ambiance in Savannah is pretty nice all-around. The Boar's Head takes advantage of the old brick building and wooden floors. And yes, there is a Boar's Head inside. The staff are pleasant and helpful all around. Wanted to know if I could get the fried shrimp without dairy and after a discussion with the chef it was no problem. On our prior visit to Savannah we walked by Boar's Head Tavern at lunchtime and considered going in but opted to keep walking around River Street and skipping lunch. I remembered the restaurant though, it had those hundred year old crumbly steps outside the front door and spooky-ish feel to it, so I wanted to stop in. The one night of our trip that we felt like dressing down in jeans and hitting a bar were tailor made for here so I made a reservation on Open Table, just in case, and dropped in 30 minutes early for a drink at the bar. We were greeted by an extremely friendly host who turned out to be the first of many extremely friendly staff at Boar's Head Tavern who made this visit such a positive one. He and I laughed about my making a reservation on a Monday and he directed us to the one private table at the bar for a cocktail since all the bar seats were full. Our bartender, Will, treated us like we WERE a private table. He came over with drink menus and I asked a couple questions and chose a cocktail. I half-jokingly asked him if he could make the martini I had the night before at another restaurant and he offered to bring me a shot of his version of a Salted Caramel. It was entirely different but still delicious (sans the lemon!) He even bought us the shot and I hadn't even told him it was my birthday! We'll be back, the service here is outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed Will. At our reservation time we were walked to one of their two tables overlooking the river and were greeted by a pleasant and attentive server. He did a great job and honestly did a better job than the "must not leave Savannah without visiting" restaurant we went to the night before. We were treated like gold here. We ordered the She Crab Soup $7 and Crabcake $10 to start. My husband had ordered she crab soup the night before at the above mentioned restaurant and preferred the one here at Boar's Head! My crabcake was good, but I didn't find the crabcake that made me fall to my knees while I was in Savannah, unfortunately (that crabcake is in Charlotte). My husband ordered the Ribeye $28 and I got the Crab Stuffed Shrimp served over angel hair pasta with lemon butter and asparagus. $23. Oddly, he was served a filet mignon, but it was the exact same price and tasted yummy (and we're pretty chill people) so he ate it and I kept asking for bites (since filet mignon is my favorite meal ever after crab cakes.) We split the Jack Daniel's Chocolate Pecan Pie $8 for dessert. It was really, really good. Should have been warmed, to make it exceptional, but we were really happy nonetheless.
