My hubby and I stopped in for New Year's Eve lunch while enjoying the day. Let me start by saying our waiter was wonderful. He was extremely polite and efficient. I ordered a crab cake sandwich. The crab cake was not hand formed but appeared to be a smooth frozen patty. It was a bit small and served on a tasteless small hamburger roll. My hubby got the blackened fish sandwich. It was quite the opposite of mine. The fish was very thick and tasty. We were seated at a corner table in the side section. The ambience is nice but a bit dark in our corner. My opinion is there is room for improvement on food quality. Service was very good. read more

Started with a Georgia Peach Cooler. Peach vodka, lemonade, cranberry and sprite. Split a cup of She crab soup. I got the stuffed shrimp with crabmeat. Wife got Low Country Shrimp and Grits, shrimp and Andouille sausage with red peppers in Cajun butter. Creamy cheddar cheese grits. That Cajun sauce made the grits pop. We got 2 desserts chocolate breading pudding and Jack Daniels Pecan pie. Both are over rated. I preferred the bread pudding of the two. The Pecan pie was served cool with some whipped cream. To many nuts, seemed like the all nuts just a little filler. The Bread pudding was to much chocolate, that was the over powering taste. Knowing what I know now I would suggest getting the shrimp and grits, skip dessert and you'll enjoy your meal. read more

I felt a little misled by the pictures and reviews of this restaurant. We kept seeing that it was the oldest in Savannah, and it's in this amazing looking old building on the river - but the inside did not live up to the hype. Established in the 70's according to the servers' t-shirts. Like 1970's. And the kitchen is basically in the middle of the dining room. It scores a minus for ambiance. The food was OK. Good, but nothing special- everyone enjoyed their entrees, but it wasn't anything you'd remember after leaving. The service was good. read more

Wow, this place was insanely good. This may have been one of the best meals I've ever had. The service was great-- we were seated quickly, our food came out fast and hot, and it was so TASTY. The drinks from the bar were perfect. The oysters Rockefeller were definitely the best I've ever had. The steaks were cooked just right. And the restaurant itself was super cozy. We went after the tour bus said this is the oldest restaurant, it was about 1:30pm, sat at bar , the lady bartender was not very happy and did not greet us after I said hi , then started coughing without covering her mouth. Love it! The split pea and ham soup is kinda like minestrone with all the veggies. I like it. The BBQ shrimp is very tasty. Somehow they make the bacon a little crispy. The fried shrimp has a really nice breading. The baked potato is exactly like............. a baked potato. Get extra butter and sour cream. The chocolate bread pudding is delicious. It's more like the center of molten lava cake than traditional bread pudding. I'll get two next time. lol. read more

First of all, it is my first time in this place. And I like it a lot. The waiter was very kind and attentive to us. Regarding the food, it arrived on time and hot. My shrimp were delicious and the portion size was very good. The soup was on another level, it was something out of this world in how tasty it was. My husband also liked his food. This IS the spot to go on River Street. We were in town for vacation and stopped in for dinner at Boars Head. We had a reservation and seated immediately. Our server was amazing! I wish I remember her name, she was the nicest and most helpful I've had in a long time. Such a warm presence. My partner and I ordered the stuffed shrimp, Low Country Bouillabaisse, and a cup of of the crab bisque. Everything was delicious but you HAVE to get the low country bouillabaisse. I thanked the owner for such a wonderful first time dining experience, that I brought entire family with me this time. Tonight I had the salmon in peach BBQ sauce, with grilled asparagus and cheddar grits. M mouth is watering just thinking about it! The GRITS are UNBELIEVABLY delicious! So light and fluffy, and flavorful. I've had grits before and never liked them. Their cheddar grits are heaven on your plate. Everyone in my family tasted and wanted more. Rest of my family had filet mignon which was also outstanding! Just know before you go..this place is riverfront but not outdoor dining. Trust me the food is so good you won't care! We have had 3 great meals at Boars Head. First in 2012. Then on 24 May when we had Shrimp and Grits and the Bouillabaisse which were both fantastic! We and the shrimp and grits at the Pirates House and liked the Boars Head much better. We went back to the Boars Head in 25 May. This time we both had nice Ribeyes. Yummy. Both times this year we had dessert. The bread pudding is fantastic! We had the flourless chocolate cake that was very tasty. Have a look at their menu and if you see so thing you like. Hear me out before you scoff at my 5 star review of a Tavern. Give me a minute to tell the story like it should be told. So, my son and I were headed out of East Bay Inn down to River Street to scope out a place for dinner. Within just a few steps from crossing the street to hit the steps down to River Street, a torrential down pour befalls upon us. Lightning hits and the sky turns dark instantly. We run down the steps, down the hill, to the first awning we see. BEHOLD, A TAVERN! Yes, one of those many establishments that line River Street. As the rain continues to fall down, I realize our dinner options have dwindled to this one door in front of us. Truth be told, I didn't want to eat here. Bar food wasn't on my mind. We walk in, and it's got that Tavern vibe (semi dark, faintly dank) and are escorted in a room that has a view to the open kitchen. Tables are lined with glowing candles, and the crafted brick walls are holding up nicely painted pictures. The scene out of the arched, brick framed windows is one of beauty. Actually, this place is starting to seem like a nice option. Our server's name is Kevin (too perfect), and he takes great care of us. We start off with the fried green tomatoes, which comes with 4 slices on a bed of greens, covered with their own house-made balsamic reduction and goat cheese. My son actually ate two and liked them! I loved the combo of balsamic and goat cheese. Highly recommend! They also serve you fresh made bread with creamy butter. That was just delicious and a perfect combo of soft and crunchy. For my meal, I ordered their chicken salad. I thought it was a sandwich at first so I was disappointed when I found out it wasn't BUT it seems that all the disappointments for this evening turned into a great surprise. It was, hands down, one of the best salads I've had. No joke. That chicken was soooooo good. The way it was breaded and the seasoning to it. It had a slight edge of spicy to it. It MADE the salad. That blackened chicken combined with the fried onion rings, honey mustard and greens ... damn near perfection. My son had the Boars Head Burger and said it was the best burger he's had (ok, so he's 13 and just started eating adult burgers, cut him some slack). I don't eat red meat anymore so couldn't really back him up. I will say that the A1 sauce that comes with it on the side was really good. Not sure what type of A1 but I would've believed it was house made too. Look, check this place out and get the Savannah Chicken Salad. It's just scary good. We had a friends birthday party here. As someone who has walked up and down River Street countless times, I have never taken much notice of this restaurant as it doesn't seem very popular and it is kind of located on the side of the building rather than at the front facing the river. After eating here, I don't particularly feel like it is worth taking notice of and I am pretty disappointed in it, in terms of downtown Savannah fare. I ordered the she crab soup, pork chops, and a side of French Fries. Starting with the soup, they charge 8$ for a cup of hint of crab. There are no notable pieces of crab in this soup. I personally felt like there was too much char on parts of the pork chop, which I had to eat around. Other parts of the pork turned out pretty good, so it may just have been a consistency issue. The waiter originally mistook my extra order of French fries as fried rice. Anyway, he brought out a rice pilaf that he let me keep when he realized the miscommunication. The gesture was nice but the rice kind of tasted like soap so I didn't even eat it. However, I did get a fresh order of fries so that was an upside. read more

We heard great things. Went and ordered filet mignon and seafood pasta. We were near cooking area in about hour saw filet under heat lamps. About half hour later talked to waiter and he said another 10-15 minutes and that was out filet under heat lamp. They also dropped sauce on floor and splashed up side of coat and shirt. They did help clean it up. We ended up leaving as who would want a meal sitting under heat lamps for 45 minutes and it was most expensive thing on menu. We ended up at another resturant. They were familiar with boarshead and said they have seen food left under heat lamps for period of time before. Our boarshead waiter seemed nice and said he got seafood order wrong and had to put it in again. We got at resturant at 5:15 and left at 7 with no meal. read more

Selected this restaurant from a list for restaurant week and we are pleased we did. The food was absolutely perfect. The server mentioned the chef was from New Orleans which inspired the special menu for Restaurant Week, well all of the items need to be permanently added to the menu. The Corn and Crab bisque reminded of another restaurant Copelands in Jacksonville and I was thrilled to know someone here makes it. Sausageband Alligator Cheesesteak may make you pause but the gator was cooked perfectly and the flavors blended together perfectly. Some restaurants play it safe but I'm glad the chef put his own homegrown flavors into the menu, definitely made it stand out. For my main entree u selected the Braised Lamb Shank, which was covered in a tomato sauce gravy that paired well with the creamy grits. And our server "Brittany " was great as well. Tourist trap. Small portions. The shrimp and grits has a ton of great flavor just a small portion for $25. It's not worth it because of the portion. Service was great. Very clean nice setting. Pricey for what they give you. You can tell they survive on drinks not the food. Crab cake tastes like it came out of a can. If you just have to have crab cakes get the starter version. It's the same portion as the entree. The entree just has a bun and fries for a few dollars more. Shrimp cocktail is $10 for 5 farm raised shrimp. Not worth it. read more
