I love burritos. Frozen, fresh, Chipotle, Freebirds, gas stations, you name it. But honestly, no burrito has really wowed me like the one I got at Bodegas. The company I was working with at the time had done the construction for this restaurant so we were invited over for a free lunch. The interior was eclectic but inviting with dark wood tones contrasting with rustic metal pieces (my friend actually worked on the chandelier himself). I was feeling "healthy" that day so I decided to go for the vegetarian. Usually I don't have high expectations for vegetarian burritos (seeing as everywhere you go, it's just the meat burrito, sans-meat), but they actually had a separate vegetarian option with freshly grilled, chunky vegetables they stuffed into my burrito. They even have different sauces you can try with your burrito, and I liked all of them. I couldn't believe it... being a meat-lover myself, there was not one moment when I was missing meat, because the vegetables were well-seasoned and plentiful. A hip spot to grab a drink and get Tex-Mex with large portions. This place is unique in that I think of it as a better version Chipotle with more options and an open bar. They serve burritos and nachos in the same style as chipotle as you get to pick and choose meats, veggies, and such. Did I mention nachos? Yeah, they serve nachos and these can become insanely large if you decide to get a lot of toppings. They also serve up other meals like enchiladas, tamales, and tacos. Their fish tacos are actually very good. Overall, the atmosphere is great for gatherings and the food is very delicious. The meals are quite inexpensive ranging between $8-$15 per plate. My boyfriend and I live close to Bodega's, so we decided to walk our dog there for dinner. Naturally, she was panting quite a bit when we arrived, so I went inside to request a bowl of water. Not only did they refuse to give me a metal bowl, but they also made me beg for a disposable metal lid-- the type that goes on to-go orders. It was infuriating. I finally got some water for the dog, then ordered our meals. His fajitas were amazing, but my bowl was a bit soupy-- too little chicken and rice and too much refried beans. First time here and I went with the bowl. I immediately compare it to Chipotle since that's my most oft visited burrito joint. The prices favor Chipotle, as does the guac. Everything else seems comparable except I will say the queso is really good and Chipotle doesn't have that menu item which I always found odd. We were visiting the Fine Arts Museum and wanted something to eat. This just happened to be the closest place to eat. We went in with low expectations and we were absolutely blown away. The food was so good! For $10 I got 3 shrimp tacos with freshly sliced avocado, a small side of beans, rice and mango, along with freshly made strawberry lemonade. A great little shop that I can order a $3.75 margarita on the rocks that is actually tasty and then walk myself home. Can't beat that! I had the three taco plate and it was about twice as much food as I needed. The pork taco was my favorite of the three I had. The only issue was that the tomatoes were from a new container that was pulled from the refrigerator. Tomatoes+cold = yuck. And that made the rest of the tacos cold. I looked this place up on Yelp as I planned a trip to the Houston Museum of Natural Science on a Tuesday afternoon. We stopped in around 1 pm and there was not wait. You walk up and order like Chipotle, Freebirds, or Bullritos. Here you have a choice of burritos, tacos, nachos, quesadilla, bowl, taco salad, or tostadas. They also have pre-chosen Combos for easy ordering. The combos are a little pricey. They also have a kids meal for $4.50. I picked the nachos cuz other taco places have burritos and tacos. It comes in a big metal mixing bowl (see photos) and was enough for 2 people! I added chicken, pico, corn salsa, cheese sauce and cilantro lime rice and charro beans. They are sooo good! $6.45 for the huge ass nachos. M had the burrito which was HUGE. He filled it with chicken, rice, beans, salsa, cheese and guac. $6.45 for the big ass burrito. We also each had a beer and M had a fountain drink. The total was $21. Parking was available in front of the restaurant on the street, we parked in the free 3 hour parking in front of the Museum of Natural Science. I suppose you could park free near the Garden Center/ Miller's Theater and walk the 2 blocks. Good food, cheap prices, clean restaurant, nice staff. read more

One of my best friends lives in the Museum District and this is one of the few places where we can grab a quick and casual bite to eat. It is pretty quiet in here in the afternoons, but I have seen it get packed on weekend nights. We always sit at the bar and get amazing service! The bartender is very friendly and makes great conversation without being intrusive. My favorite menu selection is the nachos. Bodega's is similar to Subway where you get to choose everything you want and they assemble it for you. The portions are giant and can be easily shared if you are more into drinking than eating. Only 4 stars because one time the bartender overheard that it was my friend's birthday and provided us with shots "on the house" and after we left I looked at the bill and noticed the shots has ended up on it. The only downside to this super-inexpensive and tasty little spot is that parking is a bugger. The fish tacos were as advertised in prior reviews, very nice! The tortilla soup has a very nice broth, so that makes everything else work quite well. I was stunned by how cheap our lunch for two was, and by how simple and tasty it was. I will be going back many times, but I think I will make sure to walk there next time so that I don't have to worry about parking nearby. Walking into Bodega's I was expecting something akin to Freebird's or even Mission Burrito. They have many options, something that Chipotle doesn't really offer. However, I felt the quality of the food was poor. I ordered a chicken bowl with their cilantro dressing. The chicken had no flavor, the dressing overpowered all the other ingredients and the rice was mushy. The staff was really friendly and helpful though, I ordered the margarita boasted as "The best in Houston". It was pretty good, but not the best I've had. It's always best to stick to a true Mexican Streetfood, so I got 3 carnitas tacos with red onion, jalepeno and cilantro. Let me start with the pork. So very tender, the right amount of salt and obviously cooked for hours in its own juices. Some of the best I have had. They doubled up the piping hot white corn tortilla and didn't skimp on the meat. I went for the Bodega Blaze sauce... Amazing flavor and VERY spicy... But in the best way possible. Service and people were so very friendly and efficient. This is a great spot and I will certainly jump on the rail from downtown to the Museum District any time I want a taco.... I used my most recent trip to invite some fraternity brothers out to a favorite of mine for some authentic Tex-Mex. The fajitas were exceptionally fresh and savory. Eating at Bodega's is like eating in Mexican food heaven. Their fish tacos (with Papaya Habanero or Pineapple salsa) are to die for. Once i finally branched out and stopped ordering those, I found out the shrimp tacos and the nachos are to die for as well. All of the ingredients and fresh and they don't skimp on any of the toppings that you ask them for. They have the best margaritas I have tasted in the city--not too sweet and not too tart. They came with no sauces or lemons on the side, but rather a puny amount of green (not purple) cabbage on the tortilla and a pathetic sliver of avocado. I wouldn't get them again. The shrimp tacos, however, were very good. They were topped with cabbage, tomatoes, and onions, and the shrimp were seasoned well. They came with a mango sauce as well as a tangy mayo type sauce. There isn't much parking right around it, so we stayed in our spot over by Hermann Park and walked over after spending some time in the park. The food was okay. Similar in restaurant style to Chipotle, but more options. My pork carnitas on my burrito was great, though I wish I had tried a different sauce. The cilantro-lime sauce I had wasn't very interesting. We had margaritas as well and I was actually a little disappointed in them. They were big and contained a decent amount of alcohol, but the taste was a little off. I've definitely had better margaritas elsewhere in Houston. The staff was helpful and friendly. read more

As we were going to a show at Miller Outdoor Theater and had just left the zoo, we decided to walk over to Bodega Taco to grab something to eat at the show. I used to live in this area, so I had been there a number of times - just not lately. When we got there at around 7:15p last night, only about 4 tables had patrons (despite the fact that it was a Saturday night and there were literally THOUSANDS of people just down the street). I was soon to learn why. The service was very slow and the servers incompetent. Despite us ordering tacos (which they have a cafeteria style set up for), the workers seemed unable to comprehend our orders or even their own menu. The first girl we spoke to, a young Hispanic woman, couldn't answer the question as to what came on Combo X outside of the choice of entree listed. She was completely baffled and mystified - as though we had just asked her to tell us what pie was to the 7th place when the only pie she had ever heard of was apple. To her rescue comes a young African American woman with the earth-shatteringly difficult answer of.... beans and rice. Unfortunately, the promise this new server had hitherto exuded dimmed to non-existent as my friend dared to choose tacos from different price points (options being 3 tacos of 1 type for $6.95, of another for $7.95 & a third for $8.95). The server stammered at first - as though she had never in her entire life (nor her days as a taco flinger) heard of such a request. Then, without asking anyone who may actually know the answer, proceeded to made up the biggest bunch of bull-rrito I had heard yet that day. It was such a stretch, in fact, that even SHE didn't seem to believe her own conclusion - only growing in confidence with her monumental mental gymnastics with each repetition. And just what was this Taco Temptress' solution to having tacos that fell under multiple price points? You guessed it! Or not.... This young intellectual star of America's future concluded that, if one should dare mix up the tacos from different price points, they should have to pay. In her world, this should cause the price to go from the price on the menu board to $5.95 PER TACO. Sure the menu board said that the highest cost combination (seafood tacos) were only $8.95 for 3; but, as we all well know, the menu board is more of a suggestion than a hard guideline. (patting self proudly on back) Then, feeling ultra confident in her ascertains, this Maven of Mexican fare decides that it should cost EVEN MORE. That's right. She decides that not only should my friend have to pay $5.95 per taco but that she should have to pay that price IN ADDITION to the combo price. And who could blame her? Large condiment cups of beans and rice don't come cheap! $6.95 for enough beans and rice to fit into the palm of my hands is only fair! Sure most other places would have logically charged the 3 taco price based on the most expensive taco requested, but here, according to our server, Bodega Taco simply charges you $6 per taco on top of the combo price. I mean why charge $9 when you can arbitrarily charge $25? Strangely enough, my friend modified her order. (shrug) As my friend continued her order adventure with the African American woman (who in addition to her other maladies appeared to be hard of hearing and unfamiliar with the names of the food in front of her), two more women appear and suddenly seem to realize that they should probably be doing some work. Our young Hispanic friend from earlier was one of them, and in a manner befitting her mental mega-tonnage, starts trying to serve the two people BEHIND me instead of me. I ask to place my order - at which point the 2nd lady who had appeared speaks to our young Mensa member in Spanish. Merriment is had by all 2 of them before the young Hispanic woman proceeds to service me. And let me tell you, it ended up being the utter joy you image it would be. As at last we get through the slowest moving cafeteria style service ever, we get to the cashier - a delightful gargoyle of a man. As he's ringing me up, he asks if I would like a drink. I answer in the affirmative and order the Mango Lemonade. As he fills up my cup with ice, I ask for less. That I rejected his ardent love offering of a cup full of ice, pricked him the wrong way. His face screws up in disgust as he pours out ALL OF THE ICE. That difficult task out of the way, he smirks as he holds up the empty cup to demonstrate what he is sure is his own cleverness. He then proceeds to replace NONE of the ice before he fills the cup with Mango Lemonade. Now, I had never met this dude a day in my life before (or if I had it had been an experience of such limited remarkability that to this day I can not place him), so I had zero idea of from where this smug, melodramatic attitude had originated.
