I was pleasantly surprised by Bollywood Bites. I actually had their food at a meeting that was catered by BB, and liked it so much I wanted to come back and try it for myself. I had ignored this place for months because I was leery of the Yelp reviews, but if you order family style it's very worth your money! I've tried (sorry in advance for spelling errors): - Chicken Makhni (butter chicken)/Chicken Tikka Masala: These actually tasted exactly the same to me. Not amazingly authentic, but still tasty. Pretty good if ordered medium - spicy; mild was way too bland. - Aloo Gohbi: probably my favorite dish of their's so far, and my party would agree. Cauliflower and potatoes seasoned perfectly--not too gingery like some that I've had! Best ordered medium. - Beef Vindaloo: A-OK, not my favorite, but tasty nonetheless. I felt the beef-to-potato ratio was off. - Saag Paneer: Yummy at all spiciness levels! - Garlic naan: so fresh, so good. - Basmati rice: rice is rice is rice. Their "spicy" level was about as spicy as "medium" at most places. The service was quick and not pushy about ordering more food (as places tend to be when ordering family style). Our bill came out to $44.10 for 5 people (3 curries, 1 basmati, 2 garlic naan)--insanely good prices! (This was including a 10% discount via Yelp check-in). If you order the "Thali" version of their entrees, it's 3 or 4 bucks more per plate and includes salad, rice, naan, and raita. Parking is all metered, so prime dining hours wouldn't be ideal. This can be a romantic spot, but you would feel perfectly comfortable walking in here casually dressed. There was one hostess and one server who waited on 8 tables. He did a pretty good job. Our water glasses were well attended; food speed was appropriate; and he came to check on us frequently even though we were sitting furthest from his station. I ordered the Bruin Bowl for dinner (takeout only), which was only $5.50 + tax. I called ahead and stopped by 5 minutes later. It was ready. Not too bad! Chicken tikka masala over a bed of basmati rice. It was very simple, and the portion was small, but it was cheap at least! I really liked the flavor - I prefer my tikka masala to have that little sour taste from the tomato. When I stopped in, the decor looked nice. If you want to eat in, there are deals on Yelp you should utilize. Or if you work at UCLA, you can get a 10% discount too. Looking at the menu, I didn't think anything was exorbitantly priced, although around UCLA, it may be steep for some of the students. Was casting about for a dinner option in the area and the bf remembered this place. It's a smallish place but there was plenty of seating at around 6pm on a Friday night. After perusing the menu we decided to split a "Thali" 8-item combo plate (with masala paneer as the entree) and then a separate saag paneer entree. That turned out to be more than enough food for the both of us, and everything was well-prepared and delicious. The bf thought the masala paneer was little on the sweet side but I liked it just fine. They also have a nice selection of Indian beers (I got the Hayward 5000), and soju cocktails, if you're of a mind to have some alcohol with your meal. So no issues with the food and service, but man, the EDM Bollywood music constantly playing was not to my taste and I had a hard time tuning it out. Since I liked the food a lot I wouldn't mind coming back, but I will definitely have to prepare myself for the aural onslaught. STEPH JUDGEMENT: Good food and service, annoying music. read more

Decent Indian food for the price. I ordered the Bruin Bowl - entree paired with basmati rice - and garlic naan. The Bruin bowl itself is dirt cheap at $5.75 (had to add a dollar for Lamb vindaloo though), and it's a to-go option only. The vindaloo wasn't as flavorful as others that I've had. I ordered spicy, but it tasted normal to me. But I was super hungry, so I wasn't complaining. I enjoyed the garlic naan, but it was more of a flatbread than the usual fluffy naan. read more

I placed an order on Yelp ( fulfilled by grubhub) for a wrap, Frankie and kathi roll. If you look at the menu - the naan wrap is described as either chicken or paneer tikka masala. So being a vegetarian my option was the paneer tikka masala. However when I placed the order online through Yelp- grubhub the options given to me were ' veggie', 'chicken' or 'lamb. I chose veggie and in an abundance of caution entered ' paneer tikka masala' in the comment section. Fast forward to the order itself - a few calls back and forth, an unpleasant call and a goofed up order ! Sure enough I got 1 veggie naan wrap instead of 2 paneer tikka masala. Grubhub and or Bollywood bites - this message is for both of you- your online platform needs to speak to the online menu. In this instance, there should have been an option for paneer tikka masala or chicken for the naan wrap. Or alternatively , if you have a blanket choice, the restaurant needs to understand what ' veggie' means when the menu describes chicken or paneer tikka masala. My initial rating was a two, I am giving it a four only because : 1) these are unusual times. 2) the restaurant actually made two paneer naan wraps despite saying no initially. And he also gave us the veggie wrap that was made in error. So GOOD customer service there :) 3) when my husband picked up the order , he noticed the guy who spoke to us was the only one there. Ate food from Bollywood Bites two nights in a row, it was that good. Definitely should try the samosas. I never liked samosas until I tried them here. Their naan is also the best I've ever tasted. So surprised that I haven't seen or heard of this place in the last 6 years! After eating there, I know why :C. I saw this place across the street when I tried out Mongol's Mongolian BBQ and decided to come back another day to try it out. I was super psyched because i secretly love indian food, but feel like it's just so hard to find decent places to eat it. At first I was kind of turned off by the low ratings of the place, but I thought I'd give it a chance, after all Volcano Tea at Sawtelle has great reviews and I don't particularly love it. After having the Lamb Vindaloo and Chicken Tikka Masala, I understand why the reviews were what they were, and I regretfully will have to continue my search for my go-to Indian comfort food. Both the dishes weren't super expensive with the lunch special (about $10.00 each) but the portions were tiny, and like the other reviews stated, the tastes were really bland. The lamb vindaloo was definitely better than the chicken tikka masala, but honestly they both kind of tasted like something I would whip up at home. They didn't have much taste, and I was surprised at the serving size, given that they weren't particularly expensive dishes and the restaurant was super empty. You'd think they'd be a little more generous to the customers that came. Anyways, the Chicken Tikka Masala was a little bit dryer than I would like, and the service really didn't help their cause either. Even though we were one of four parties in the restaurant, it took around 10 minutes for us to flag down a waiter and get water refills and the check after our meal. This is the only Indian place in Westwood and fortunately relatively unknown. That's for good reason. The regular menu is awkwardly priced, with $13-15 dishes with just the sauce, without any rice. Rice is an extra $4 or so, bringing a meal easily up to $20. If you have a rice cooker at home, this is a decent meal with sizable portions and a Western-friendly, straightforward palette (not spicy and a good amount of sweetness). However, if you don't make your own rice -- after all, you're eating out -- $4 for white, even if it's long-grain rice, is a pretty hard pill to swallow. You might as well go to CAVA and get their saffron yellow rice, which has actual saffron strands in it. /end rant What's special about Bollywood Bites is their weekday lunch special, which is the same dishes on the regular menu, but with rice, for a bit more than half the price. I have to admit that, prior to coming to Bollywood Bites, I never understood the appeal of naan. Usually, it's served at restaurants as somewhat cold, dry, tasteless wraps that you could mix with everything else, but why would you want to? Bollywood Bites heats up a bowl of naan for you. While it's warm, it's soft and slightly sweet. I love it. The tikka masala with chicken is the most popular Indian dish, but it's a bit too bold. When you want a mellower flavor, the chicken curry is also good, or the saag, which is made out of ground spinach. In the weekends from, I think, 11am-3pm, they serve a buffet with all the aforementioned dishes, plus gulab jamun balls in rose-flavored syrup and coconut rice for dessert. Plus, they also heat up a bowl of naan, included in the price, which is still cheaper than the regular menu. This is probably one of the best deals in Westwood, if not *the best deal*. I'm surprised more people don't come here -- just for this. I don't know if they're losing money on the margins here, but if they aren't -- if these buffets and lunch specials are good business -- then I would suggest that the owners come up with better pricing structure for the regular menu. I can't see how this wouldn't be a more popular restaurant, if rice didn't cost $4 (and possibly with a bit of marketing). I told one of the waiters awhile back and he said the owners are aware of this issue, but I'm not sure that this has been solved. For just the lunches, this is 5 stars, and ever since finding out about the buffet, I try to go there every weekend. I mean honestly, if we're comparing to Indian restaurants on the whole, this isn't necessarily the best or the most authentic. But for students in Westwood, a $13 buffet with dessert, with naan, is like a wet dream come true. read more

Solid, affordable Indian restaurant in the Westwood surrounding area! I was really craving their sev puri appetizer which was really flavorful and authentic as expected. However, it is around $9 for like 7 puris which is ridiculously expensive!! However, their normal lunch special thalis are a great deal, as you get the full course of naan, entree, rice, salad, etc for around $9 as well. It is a filling meal and satisfies the Indian cravings but I have definitely have had better. Next time, I would probably drive out a little further but may splurge on appetizers when nearby. Came again with my girlfriend, and everything was pretty up to expectations. However, it did take a good couple of minutes before a server brought us to our table. This time we ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and, one of our favorites, the Butter Chicken. Butter Chicken was great as normal. The Chicken Tikka Masala was pretty good; maybe a little too sour but just right with a nice spoonful of rice. However, the chicken in the Chicken Tikka Masala specifically was of quite poor quality. It was so much dryer and tougher than the chicken in the Butter Chicken which was a little disappointing. Otherwise, still a decent experience and I expect nothing less than that. read more

Pretty decent Indian food option near UCLA. Tikka Masala and the Naans are good most of the time. The prices are on the higher end for Indian food. Staff are always friendly. There was one time that the Chicken Tikka felt a bit rubbery, but that could have been due to a new chef. The lunch specials are well worth the money. Although there is a decent amount of travel time required to get to there from central UCLA campus, I sometimes make the trip to get the Bruin Bowl (~$6) or the Lunch Bowl (~$9), which are both great take-out options for lunch. It sure beats the non-healthy food options like Panda Express at UCLA, if you are someone who craves to have a rice included meal. Also, they offer a 10% discount with your bruin card!! I sure wish they had another location at the Ackerman Union itself at UCLA. Also, it'd be great if they could add the (take-out) lunch specials to the online ordering platforms, so that one doesn't have to go there and wait 5-10 min till food is prepared. read more
