Counter service serving Korean Fried Chicken I haven't been back to the Howe 'Bout Arden Shopping Center since even prior to Covid. Only had we recently came back to the area to watch a premier movie at Century Arden 14. We came early so we can get a bite to eat before the movies and we chose to grab dinner here at Bonchon. I need to to crawl out from under a rock once in awhile... the last time I visited this shopping center Bonchon wasn't open for business yet. Well, anyway, I'm here and I didn't realize that this location is a fast food counter service Bonchon (I've only been to table service locations. For those new to Bonchon, Bonchon serves up Korean fried chicken and a variety of savory Asian fusion dishes, known in South Korea since 2002. I got the 10-pc soy garlic Chicken Strips and it came with complimentary Coleslaw. It was mmm, mmm good, flavorful and crunchy as I've known them to be. Planning to go to the Natomas location but they closed today. Natomas location is farther than Sacramento location but they seems like have better ratings on yelp. Anyway since they closed, I just came to Sacramento location. Parking area is easy to find, seating are plenty. They are pretty busy during lunch time but not like full seating so still plenty of seat. Ordering was easy and fast. Menu is pretty simple. They also has lunch specials. I ordered two different wings flavors. Their wings are crispy and hot. They are tasty but just kind of dry and sauce is not fully covered the chicken. So far they are not bad. I got udon which they put it to go in the container. Doesn't look good and I don't recommend the udon because they used a really bad looking dark mushrooms. Definitely won't order the udon. Instant udon taste so much better than this. Even though I requested for here they do pack everything to go. Tried it out for lunch since their specials seemed like a great way to try it out. I got the wing combo with half soy half spicy and omg the spicy was sooooo spicy. I struggled to eat it and trust me I'm no stranger to spicy food lol . I heard that this place was really good, so I needed to try it out. It really leveled up to the rumors. My husband and I absolutely loved it. My favorite was the pork bun. It was porch belly, coleslaw, and a cucumber. Isley enough, it made the difference and it wasn't too fatty because of it. We also ordered the fried chicken wings half and half and Korean tacos. Location is in a mini mall. Plenty of parking early afternoon on a Thursday but could see it being more challenging on the weekends. Counter staff was friendly and patient. Lots of tables if you want to eat there, all clean. Picked up some chicken and japchae. Japchae was tasty but a little awkward to eat with the noodles all at the bottom (I didn't have a bigger bowl or plate to mix it). Got cole slaw as a side (instead of the radishes) which was crunchy and tasty without being too creamy. Oh my, the chicken was very good. Had the soy sauce garlic wings, which were still crunchy after a 15 minute drive and 10 minute walk. Tasty and messy, but I was willing to wash my hands several times. Definitely worth a visit! I've saw the mixed reviews but my experience here today was top notch. Got some soy garlic wings and Japchae to go. The person at the cash register was super friendly and she made recommendations based on the fact that my partner was a vegetarian (the japchae can be made without meat). The chicken was flavorful and still super crispy when I got home (about 30 mins later due to traffic). I had a bite of the noodles and it was very flavorful even without any meat. I want to start off by saying that I used to love this place. I was going to post a review for 5 stars but unfortunately it seems that new ownership has made changes that I was hoping that they would avoid. I've seen other Bonchon locations make similar changes to more of large family style meal only menu. This doesn't work for individual or families that want their own meal. It looks as if the menu was changed to no longer include the lunch special (or the 6 piece) outside of Monday - Friday 11 AM - 3 PM. And they limited the choice to one side. This is absolutely ridiculous. Severely limited timeframe. With my family we each like different flavors and we usually select from different sides that were available in the 6 piece meal. I've tried wings from a variety of places, but Bonchon has the best wings ever. I was at this location with my family on June 26. You get to choose between soy garlic or spicy. I personally recommend soy garlic cause sometimes I like spicy, sometimes spicy can be too much for someone in your party. If you are looking for a main dish, I also recommend the tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes). Like other chicken wing places, you can choose between bone-in or boneless. BOY AINT NO WAY BOY. I recently had an absolutely dreadful experience at Bonchon that I feel compelled to share. Not only did we endure an excruciatingly long wait because our food was given to other and we got BLAMED for not hearing our name but they knew it was us and willingly handed it to someone else, but to add insult to injury, when our food finally arrived, it came with an unwanted side of a disgusting bug. The entire ordeal left a bad taste in my mouth, both figuratively and literally. It's incredibly disappointing when a dining experience turns into a nightmare, and unfortunately, Bonchon failed miserably in delivering even a basic standard of service and hygiene. Five stars for the pork belly sliders! Two stars for the wings. The wing flavor is really good, however, the wings are unfortunately dry. I remember Bonchon from years ago being really really good. I don't know if my taste in wings has become more refined or if the wings got drier. The sliders are SO GOOD. The pork belly is perfectly smokey and the bun is a good pork bun. Not dry at all. Considering the global popularity of chicken that has tantalized our taste buds, this was my first time ever dining at a "Bonchon" (which in Korean means "My Hometown"). The company itself started in South Korea which later expanded to other Asian countries such as Cambodia, Thailand, and Philippines. And in the United States, Bonchon currently has over 100 locations (and counting) with restaurants scattered all over the country. I came here for the first time with my lady on 1/1/2020 which was my first meal of the new decade. Since this was a holiday and people were out shopping at the busy Howe Bout Arden shopping center, it was very busy upon our arrival (which was around 1:30pm). Parking can be quite tricky considering you have major businesses including "HomeGoods", "Nordstrom Rack", "CREAM", and the huge "Cinemark" movie theaters. The menu here is rather simple and easy to understand. Their chicken is available in your choice of wings, strips, drums with 3 types of sauces to coat with it; spicy, soy garlic, and sweet crunch. They also have other popular options such as Korean tacos and sliders. And even more of the traditional Korean dishes including Bulgogi, Japchae, Bibimbap, and House Fried Rice. Finally, you can also find several Asian Fusion dishes including Takoyaki, Udon noodle soup, Shrimp Shumai, Calamari, & Popcorn Shrimp. Since this was my first time, I went the simple route and ordered a bundle meal. This consisted of two Bulgogi sliders with a side of French Fries. My lady opted for their Chicken Strips coated in spicy Bonchon sauce. Both our orders arrived promptly within 10 minutes. Everything was presented very nicely and I must say, they definitely did not skimp on the fries. As far as my Bulgogi slider, the marinated ribeye beef was seasoned very well while the cucumber and coleslaw provided a cool, crunchy texture to it. The spicy mayo added a small hint of heat while the potato bun was soft and spongy. Her chicken strips were good but the only drawback was they put so much darn breading on the outside with little meat on the inside. My overall experience is that this place is quite similar to your everyday fast food restaurant except for different coatings that are utilized in their chicken. Prices are a little bit on the high end of the spectrum but service and ambiance was above average. Will I visit a Bonchon Chicken again? Maybe.. ..but there are many places that are far superior to this. With that said and done, I am rating "Bonchon Chicken" a four stars. read more

Tried bonchon for the first time the other day. I ordered the tteokbokki qnd I was very surprised at the size I was expecting a little container but it was a very generous size! I also ordered the 5 piece soy garlic chicken, when I opened the box I was surprised that they used big chicken legs like the ones you buy at the grocery store I expected the regular little chicken wings, I do wish that there was more of the soy garlic sauce but overall they were pretty yummy. The kimchi here is pretty good too not too acidic and goes well with the food. The prices are great for the amount of food that you get. Definitely will be coming back to try other items. read more

Tuesday, 6/28/2022 - We saw Bonchon Korean Chicken and tried them. Ever since we had the Pelicana chicken in Cuppertino, CA (San Jose area), we've been craving them. Lol. This restaurant is located where the movie theatre is, next to Kura Revolving Shushi. Address is 1600 Ethan Way, Ste 40, Sacramento, CA 95825. Uopn arrival to Bonchon: Pros 1) lots of parking. 2) the man behind the counter taking orders was nice. 3) they have a nice cold water jug on the counter with cups for water drinkers. Water tasted good. No metal taste or funky taste. 4) inside restaurant looked clean. Chairs clean. 5) bathroom clean. 6) when I went back inside to ask for ketchup, server behind counter kindly gave me a handful. Cons 1) our foods didn't have much flavor in them. Not even on the batter. The battered shrimp had no flavor, my chicken tacos didn't have much flavor, and fries had no flavor. I mean, all I could taste was the cheese on the fries. Lol. I slather my chicken tacos (chicken dry) with the spicy mayo sauce. That sauce REALLY helped with my chicken taco and the battered shrimp. I think without that, foods wouldn't have been very tasty. The chicken strip had a sweet flavor and we liked it. But it was too dry. It was over cooked. 2) outside table was dirty. I had to clean it myself so we can sit there. 3) when I just went in the bathroom, one of the workers kept knocking on my door! I know it was a worker because I can hear the cleaning supplies being left by my bathroom door. Bathroom wasn't dirty and there was paper and seat covers in there already. So I'm not sure why they kept knocking. I screamed out at each knock that I was still in the bathroom. I mean, i just went in! Talk about having to cut my pee in half, wash my hands, and rush out. That was uncomfortable. Conclusion This was our experience. So it may be much better for someone else. We were disappointed in the foods. I got rushed out of the bathroom when I just went in. And the outside table was dirty. Good thing for napkins and my cup of water to clean our outside table! Lol. We may go here again to try it one more time. But we'll try a different dish like japchae or bulgogi or something. Sure not trying the dry chicken and shrimp again. Maybe we came in a bad day. read more

"It takes a tough man to make a tender chicken."~ Frank Perdue After seeing so many Yelp friends visit this popular Korean restaurant, Saturday evening rolled in and we finally stopped in for a bite! We wanted something light since we were getting ice cream afterwards, so we split a small order of the Half & Half Chicken Strips which comes with a side of Korean Pickled Radishes. The chicken sauced in a spicy dip was a bit too hot for me, so I'm glad we did half & half. Now the soy garlic chicken on the other hand was freakin delicious, yes I said "freakin", the sauce didn't overpower the taste of the chicken and the breading stayed on well with each bite! Those pickled radishes, were a hit, my toddler was obsessed with them, she kept saying "more please!" I would recommend trying out this popular spot, tables fill up quickly tho so grab a spot fast after you order and chow down on some tasty chicken! Bonchon is a chain serving up Korean style food and fried chicken! I ordered the combo 2 with chicken strips, both the spicy and the garlic soy so I got a couple of both. The spicy has a better taste in my opinion but I can't handle spice too well. If you're like me then maybe go for the garlic soy instead. The chicken is pretty crispy, but just a little dry since tenders are breast meat. The French fries are great, super crispy and has the right sized cut (think steak fries). Service is superb. Very friendly and quick to bring out the food and clean up. The restaurant is very clean and there's TV's all around. Haven't tried the Korean dishes but if I'm ever in the area I'd come back.
