Our party of 6 came here for lunch at around 11:50am and the place was packed. It's a fairly small restaurant with about 10-12 tables with half of the place approximately max. seating of 60. Due to the size of our party, we had to wait about 35 minutes before getting seated. This one is a little different from the one I previously went to, but it's okay bc we're only here for one reason - the chicken! We ordered a large (20 wings) for three. It's just as good and just as crispy! I tried the kimchi coleslaw, but wasn't really a fan. I'm not big on coleslaw to begin with anyway. Last two trip to Bon Chon just reiterate how inconsistent they are :( the chicken doesn't have the air and crispyiness to them like we use to. A couple pieces that I had actually were soak in oil inside the chicken. I think maybe the batter got crack, so the oil were trap between the skin and the meat. Hmmm, I don't see what the big deal is here. I love fried chicken. What do I think about the fried chicken here? It was alright, but nothing special. I have to say there was definitely inconsistency with the white meat chicken. I understand not all the pieces will be the same because of how it's cut, but what was a turnoff was the inconsistency in the breading. Some of the pieces were breaded way too thick, which leads to inconsistent texture and cooking of the chicken. I was happy with the spiciness in the spicy garlic chicken and actually needed to take bite breaks of rice when the heat would build up. I've had 99 chicken 3 times in the span of a few years and thought it was subpar. Never liked how saucey it was, or the sauce, for that matter. After that, I was no longer interested in Korean fried chicken. Bon Chon, along with a few other Korean fried chicken places opened up within these past few years and I thought, why not give it another try. Since BC's photos didn't have overly sauced chicken and has 4 stars, it seemed like a good option. On the other hand, I kind of knew I'd be disappointed by reading the reviews that the flavor was bland. Came on a Wednesday night at 7:00 and there were 6 parties ahead of us. The restaurant is quite small. We waited until 8 to get a table. What I didn't like was that they took the order of the people who were seated after us first. A lot of people ordered to-go to avoid the wait. We ordered a small white meat platter and a medium mixed drum & wing platter, both soy garlic flavored. The sides were biscuits and rice. The portions are smaller compared to 99 chicken. The mixed plate had two large drum sticks and everything else was small, like the size of the frozen wings you can get from Costco. The large drum sticks were tasty and not over fried, however, the smaller wings were all overly coated in batter and over fried. Ew. The taste, as other reviewers have mentioned, is bland. My bf used the word "light" to describe it. Onto the white meat, they were a bit larger than the small wings/drumsticks and coated fairly well with the batter/sauce. The sauce was definitely heavier on the white meat, but I wasn't a fan of the taste. The biscuits were mediocre and rice is well, white rice. I did really like the pickled radish though. It was my first time having Korean Fried Chicken and I was thoroughly pleased. It was a bit different from fried chicken you can get at Wingstop or Smoke Eaters. Far off from perfect like bonchon's. The texture is also perfect. The chicken is fried perfectly and with every bite, you can hear just how crispy it is. Their kimchi coleslaw is also a delight. I love mixing it with my rice so the rice isn't as plain as it would. When I last went here, I went with my girlfriend and 2 other friends. We had to wait maybe around 10 minutes before getting seated as there is usually a waitlist. We had 40 wings total and a garlic fries. The fries was also great. I can definitely taste the garlic flavor, which I liked. The atmosphere was nice although it is a bit crowded (it is pretty small inside). The server in charge of our table took good care of our drinks as she constantly refilled our cups whenever it reached low. As a big drinker, it helped allow me enjoy my lunch a lot better because I need to drink water in order to eat. Although many more contenders for the KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) title have shown up recently, Bon Chon's crust is what separates it from the others that I've tried. If you like the wispy strands that come from panko type breading, this is not the place to go. Rather, Bon Chon chicken forms a hard, smooth shell that encases the chicken, trapping the moisture inside. The sauce is fried right into the shell. My coworker and I have been here often enough for lunch, and we generally get the same thing - a medium mixed chicken with half in each sauce, usually with one appetizer, and a side of rice. Today we had the shrimp and onion (rings) appetizer, but we have had the potstickers as well, and while those appetizers are tasty, they're really nothing to write home about. The chicken is great but be warned that spiciness can vary a fair amount, so if you're averse to heat stick with soy garlic flavor. I can't get over the folks who rated this place 4 stars! The chicken was good - much better than KFC and different than 99 Chcken (which btw is STILL my #1 choice), but seriously, not sure if the chicken alone would rate 4 stars. My hubby and I ordered a large order of drumsticks so we could bring some chicken home to the kiddies - was told it would take 20 mins - I was okay with that as long as I got to eat my fries... but here's the thing: 1) another table that came in AFTER us got served their chicken first. And the waitress tells us a lot of people have complained about this and that for extra $ we can get another biscuit - but the company figured it's enough food for people. SAY WHAT? You KNOW "paying customers" think it sucks and yet you just keep on doing it? Oh but after this "batch" of biscuits - they'll start giving two (probably cause they're going to cut the one biscuit batter into two little pieces) - seriously - why don't you just say two sides - one side per PERSON? Sheesh... totally ridiculous! 3) Kimchee coleslaw? are you serious? plain chopped up cabbage mixed in with kimchee juice? just looked like pink coleslaw with NO FLAVOR... I've had better regular coleslaw. Obviously everyone has been and is going compare this to 99 Chicken. I'm going to frankly say they bare almost no resemblence to eachother except for their Korean origins. The chicken at Bon Chon is better made than 99. The crust is very crunchy and the chicken is really moist. There is enough sauce to just glaze the chicken which helps prevent from your fingers from being sticky and napkins from piling up at your table. The spicy version is pretty tame and is actually farily sweet. I had a side of kimchi was was actually just a cole slaw. The order of regular fries was likea mcD's small and cost around $4. The zuccini fries were pretty good though. This place has a lot of positives: good staff, nice modern place, beer, and really crunchy moist chicken. BUT I wasn't all that hooked on the flavor. It seemed to taste just like sugar and a little soy and a bit of chili. The fries were absurdly dinky too. Maybe I like my chicken saucy aside from everything I said before. Had the small chicken combo with kim chee cole slaw, DDUK BOK GI (SPICY RICE CAKE), and sweet potato fries. The fries are coated with some powder, maybe a combination of potato starch and tapioca starch. Similar trick to McDonalds who invented that idea, coating fries. Sweet potato fries don't taste oily or mushy. The sugar in the sweet potatoes carmelize in the high heat of the deep fryer. Best shoestring sweet potato fries I have ever had. You get this sweet butterscotchey flavor with the butter replaced with a sweet potato flavor. Very smooth. The most popular fry there. The chicken is very juicy. Completely sealed in by the batter. Some combination of rice flour/tapioca or potato starch. Stays warm for a long time because the coating completely seals the chicken. KFC doesn't have this technique down which results in the chicken and batter absorbing oil. The DDUK BOK GI is a traditional korean rice cake with a spicy sauce, cheese, fish cake mix. Fish cake is not the highest quality, typical for a fast food restaurant. Rice cake is better than the chinese version, about the thickness of a human pinky finger, 2" long. The thicker profile gives it a much chewier texture than the chinese version of a rice cake, a flat oval shape. Sauce + cheese were ok. Acquired taste. Would not order it again. We went with the soy garlic flavor and peach yogurt soju. We also ordered another large order of wings. We decided on 3 sides of rice and 1 side of kimchi coleslaw. The coleslaw didn't really have any kimchi flavor and the side of rice is the size of a normal bowl. Kimchi coleslaw - This was a little weird since kimchi is supposed to be slightly spicy, but the spice gets dulled by the dressing... Sesame ginger tofu salad - Boo. In case you wonder (as I did), each wing piece is half a wing (a wing or drummet) and not a whole wing. My order of wings were over-cooked and the drumsticks were cooked just right. The chickens are of good-size and probably not truly "free-range" given the size. The outside of the wings taste better (crunchier) and the inside of the drumsticks taste better (juicier). It does not seem like they marinade the chicken. I have to salt the inside of my drumsticks. Lucky they use chickens with natural good taste. For the batter, I prefer a less uniform thick crust. I keep on thinking leather when I think of their crust. The soy-garlic glaze is not as good as the wings in the Korean supermarkets. I like it sweet, but not in that way. The pickled radish tastes normal, the coleslaw and kimchee coleslaw taste bland (if you are used to restaurant food). I added salt, pepper, sugar and vinegar to them. KFC's coleslaw and biscuits taste better. We called in for our order. And apparently, you can only order to-go when you call in. The phone is busy sometimes and I was put on-hold. They gave us the Time the food is ready and it was only a couple minutes late. The restaurant is small, cramped and busy. Overall, I don't crave Bon Chon or 99 Chicken like I do KFC. My favorite Bonchon location by far! Service is good and fast! It is pretty crowded since the shop is on the smaller side so there is usually a wait but food comes out very fast! Chicken is amazing; super crispy and flavorful! There are two flavors: spicy and soy garlic. The spicy has a good amount of spice (mild-medium). The soy garlic is also super flavorful for non-spicy lovers! You can also choose half half for combos which gives you both flavors. I usually go for the combos, which come with both wings and drumsticks. The medium and large combos also come with free sides so take that offer up! There are also a bunch of other entrees and appetizers to choose from (korean fusion). Definitely my go-to fried chicken place!!! read more

Bonchon opening here in the Bay Area? I'm there! Soooo much hype for this place since there was another location in NY. Hearing the NY location was "DA BOMB!" I had to swing by this place when I heard it finally opened. We got there around 7:15 PM and luckily beat the crowd of people that came in after us. Even with only 6 people our wait was about 40 minutes. People were waiting up to two hours for larger groups so come here on a week day if you can! We had two orders of the mixed chicken. From the YELP reviews we ordered as soon as we sat down because it takes them 30 minutes to cook the chicken. They apparently fry it twice so it takes longer then usual. We got our chicken and I hate to say but I was disappointed. Skin was really crispy but the flavor just wasn't there. Once you got pass crispy skin there was no flavor left. I would stick to the smaller wings and not get the drumsticks. Since flavor was an issue the bigger drumsticks had even less flavor. I did have have to give it upto the service. They did their best to serve us quickly and kept our cups full of beer and soju otherwise I probably would have given them two stars. read more
