Visited recently for a birthday and thought the food was better than I expected it would be based on prior reviews. I had the carrots and the meatball and both were super tasty and unique. I also thought the portion sizes were good- bigger than I expected. My partner had the fish and was very pleased. Big pluses: vibe is great on the patio or inside and they waive the corkage fee on a bottle you bring in if you buy one. This is a great value considering that you can get a very good bottle of wine for $45-55. Drawbacks: Our server was excellent but timing was off for our group of 7. Some plates came out cold and they timed things in an odd way (getting fries 30 mins before the burger). I would have appreciated them discussing how to course the meal with us, not holding food until it was cold, and skipping the new glasses and silverware if it's adding to the delays. Lastly, you can get the Parlour menu, including the burger but it was too salty this time. LOVE salt but it was too much especially with fries. Otherwise still the best burger in town (although the red cow burger with bacon is close because of the mustard). read more

Borough kindly hosted our entire team during a team conference. It was one of the most flawless experiences we have experienced as a group. Orders were taken in advance, as well as notes on dietary restrictions. The staff was very welcoming and organized. The appetizer salad was lovely, and my colleagues practically licked our plates after the entrees. The restaurant blocked off an entire section for us, right by the windows. I loved the atmosphere of the place. I had the salmon entree which included fennel cream, charred fennel, turnips, picholine olives, and chives. They made it complete dairy-free for me, and yet it was still like putting butter in my mouth. The salmon was cooked to perfection. The "smores" dessert was a deconstructed smore-like concoction. I admit I tried a little even though it was not dairy-free. The server was so kind, she came out with my own plate of dairy-free seasonal sorbets to try. They were very interesting flavors. Simply great food. Service is okay. I come here at least once every month. Funny they never seem to remember me considering my frequency of visits. I stopped making reservations as I have always been able to find a seat every time I decide to come here, which includes random days and time. 1. Food I love their food. Not the biggest portion, sometimes I feel like I am still hungry after having had an entree, but the taste is great. My absolute favorite is the scallops. Chocolate desserts are great here too. They have some good selection of drinks and cocktails. If you feel like drinking more after eating here, head down the stairs to Parlour. I personally like Borough due to its classy setup, better service, quieter atmosphere and superior food choice. You just simply can't go wrong with food here. 2. Service Not the friendliest servers, but again the food quality makes it worth it. They aren't bad or rude either. I just wish they were nicer/friendlier. Also, asking much questions is not recommended as every time they had to check with someone and never know the answer right away. 3. Atmosphere I'd say they are quite dark in lighting, not the best place to take instagram worthy food pics, but not a problem for me. Intimate and classy and romantic feel. Very good place for a romantic date. Not too noisy, so it makes it possible to actually talk with your date. 4. Parking Lots of street parking available outside. During the weekend and dinner time, it gets hard to find a parking spot. It is in the north loop, lots of fun things to do before or after dinner here, including walking as the neighborhood is safe and roads are cleaner. read more

We are on a mission to try every restaurant in the North Loop, so we ate brunch today at the Borough. We had a lovely, lovely brunch - and I would say the Borough is now on our short-short list for Sunday brunches. Delicious. So first the space is really lovely. It's bright with lots of natural light, and the wall opposite the windows is lined with all of these cute little mirrors, so the light was even more lovely. There is this amazing thing at one end of the room that is made up of various square-shaped cross sections of wood. It was so cool I couldn't take my eyes off of it. The space is very classy but relaxed at the same time. I loved it. We started off with the cocktail menu. I ordered the lavender bellini, which our waitress assured me (accurately) did not have an overwhelmingly lavender taste. It honestly was more like a mimosa to me, but it was delicious. My husband had the frothy OJ, which our waitress described as a foamy Orange Julius. And that is EXACTLY what it tasted like... kind of amazing. But also incredibly sweet. I could not have drunk it. We were seated right by the lovely buffet of pastries. They had the giant caramel roll, which looked amazing but was truly humongous (like plate size). So we opted for the smaller and more reasonable lemon merengue. That was really delicious mostly... the tart shell was buttery and crispy, the lemon curd was perfect but the copious amount of merengue on top was grainy. As a baker I know that means it wasn't mixed well enough or the powdered sugar wasn't sifted. But it still was very tasty. For food, I got the eggs on toast, which is a lovely pile of soft scrambled eggs, avocado, radish slices, microgreens and crab meat all on top of a lovely griddled piece of bread. I could have licked my plate. My husband got the shrimp n grits, which came with huge head-on prawns. He ate every bite of it so it must have been good. Ordered the double parlour burger and the tartine, as well as a cinnamon bun. To start, the atmosphere was quite nice for a brunch. The outside and interior had a good rustic feel to it. Service was good and attentive as well. To start with, the cinnamon bun was large so we split, but nothing to write home about. Felt the bun was largely overpriced. The double parlour burger was one that was recommended to me so I was hyped for it. The first thing I noticed was the lack of vegetables. I like meat as much as the next guy, but I like a good balance with tomatoes or mushrooms or red onions, etc. I also thought I read that the burger came with and egg, but I later saw it was egg bun, and not egg and bun. My misreading. The flavor was decent but it was quite salty (with lack of veggies to balance). I wouldn't order this again for its hefty $14 price tag. The other dish we got was the tartine. This had really good flavor and had great presentation. However, we only got one medium-smallish slice. Felt this was also overpriced. You will have to sit at the bar or put on the patio to enjoy it as they don't serve it in the dining room. It's worth it though!! Don't bother with the St Paul location make the drive to Mpls it will not disappoint. This juicy deliciousness with its toasted bun is well making my mouth water just typing this!! They also have some pretty incredible craft cocktails that change seasonally. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The location is great, parking is not always the easiest but there is valet available and not too expensive. It is warm inviting and not too loud. read more

Wonderful food, great atmosphere! My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary dinner here a few weeks ago and were very impressed. We made reservations online and sat in the area overlooking the kitchen. It was great watching the chef's team preparing our food as we watched. We started with the octopus that was coated in an amazing sauce. Next we had oysters and the sea urchin. I'd pass on the oysters next time, much too salty for our liking. However the sea urchin was beautifully prepared and has great flavor. For entrees we shared the quail, and the fish and oysters. The broccolini was our favorite part of the quail dish- literally packed with flavor. The fish and mussels was my boyfriends favorite and we couldn't get over how good the grilled bread was when we dipped it in the broth. Also the wait staff was knowledgeable and friendly! 5 Star Special Night at Borough! From the moment we wandered in, without a reservation, the maître d' treated us as if we were visiting dignitaries! I went to Borough for the first time last week. I enjoy the atmosphere and the windows. Super nice when there is so much brightness. They have a nice wine and cocktail selection which I always appreciate. They do serve the parlour menu as well, which is nice! I ordered the salmon and it was fine just small portions and expensive. The fries are always amazing. If I come back I would probably get the parlour burger since I know it is good. It is in the north loop so mostly street parking. read more

Some friends and I gathered here for a birthday dinner. They raved of the parlor burger so I had to give it a go. Parlor is the name of their speak easy that is located below the restaurant. You can get the burger at either section which is great because it is now absolutely one of my favorite burgers. I like to joke that I could prob order just the patty and it still might still be the best. But I suggest you order it just how it comes. Very fun industrial setting. But I really enjoyed the attentive service and the atmosphere so much that I dragged my husband back 3 days later. And there is a parking lot incredibly easy to park at especially for this suburban mouse that doesn't always like parking in the city. read more

My wife and I dined at Borough last night. We ordered the gnocchi appetizer. She ordered the flank steak, I ordered the salmon. The food was excellent, but the portions were absurdly small. I mean, laughably small, surprisingly small. The steak consisted of five pre-cut bites (yes, they cut the steak into pieces in advance..Is this a new trend?). The salmon was a single small piece-about 6 bites. A single piece of broccolini was plated with the salmon. When I pointed it out, the server actually told me that they do "small plates", which isn't true. The prices are not "small plate" prices. The chef comped us a slice of cake (oddly, they didn't let us select the dessert-they just brought out a slice of cake). Neither the Chef nor the front-of-house manager ever came by the table to speak with us. There is no way we'll go back. I recommend steering clear--there are better options out there. read more

I can't stop thinking and talking about this place. I'm obsessed. I've never been to a restaurant where service super pissed me off in the first 30 minutes, but then redeemed themselves so greatly I had to give a 5 star review, until now. I had reservations at 7:30pm. The place was packed. Very trendy, modern, and sleek space, I dug it. We were seated quickly, but it took forever for someone to come by, finally we get drink orders in, but then we sat waiting....At 7:58pm I decide I'm giving it two minutes and then I'll be asking for a manager. A minute later the drinks came. Not a good start. Then another guy comes over and says he'll be helping us the rest of the meal and that there was a changeover so that's why they were slow. Ok, whatever. My old fashion. Excellent. Helped relax me. The soaked cherries need to be jarred and shipped to my house on a monthly subscription. The menu, I was told, changes frequently, but if it's the same chef creating the menu, I will keep returning. This meal was definitely in my top three this year. We had the octopus, tuna crudo, steak tartare, pork belly, roasted cauliflower, and lamb three ways. Holy heaven. I am so in love with their food. Everything was beautifully plated, refreshing on your palate, seasoned perfectly, flavor combinations were invigorating, every bite hit me with pleasure each time, I can go on and on. The lamb three ways was my favorite. Lamb belly. What the what? Never tried it, I must have more. I want the entire lambs belly. The cauliflower had a light lemon cream sauce with crunchy black sesame seeds, this dish was also a mouthwatering standout. The dessert menu was screaming at me and looked so appetizing, but I pretty much ate the plate on all the other dishes, I couldn't fit anymore food in my body. Our server did a phenomenal job. The food exceeded my expectations! The most unique and my favorite dish was the octopus. It was tender and I loved the peanut sauce. They comped our prawns without us asking since they wanted to show their apology for the wait time. The three large prawns were tasty and worth the wait. Two of us split the halibut main entree which came with a delicious potato sauce and mushrooms. The fish was cooked perfectly! My friend enjoyed the seared duck with foie gras entree. This is now at the top of my list of favorite restaurants and I can't wait to go back! I don't understand how this place isn't more popular - one of our favorite meals in MN!! We came to dinner on a Wednesday at 7 PM and the place wasn't crowded, which was a surprise to us. Server was knowledgeable and walked us through the menu and gave us honest feedback if we ordered too much food! What we ordered in terms of THE BEST to less liked: - Pork Belly - this was so good that one person got it again as their entree in addition to the app we shared - Octopus - the pictures don't do this plate justice, amazing amazing flavors and the octopus was very well cooked - Samosa - really good flavors and lentil was so good - Salmon - really fresh cuts and strong sauce - Chicken - a deconstructed chicken parm was what we were told and it beyond delivered, the hush puppies and mushroom was also great side dishes - Scallops - scallops were cooked really well but ultimate flavor of the dish wasn't quite there the old fashioned was excellent and we also tried the "pretzel" for dessert, highly recommend. To give some comparison, our favorite meals before coming to Borough were Piccolo, Surly Brewer's table, butcher & the boar.... but our meal here is the runaway favorite. read more

I fully expected the hype to be overrated, especially since Borough is a new restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised. The food is just as good as everyone says it is. The scallops and steak were cooked perfectly and paired with fabulous complementary flavors. We had the soup, carpaccio, scallops, strip steak, and donuts. All were really really tasty. Service was friendly and prompt as well. The one thing I take issue with is the cost of the "large" plates. If you read my reviews, you know I am not shy about eating out at fine dining restaurants and paying the higher prices. However, I usually feel that I get what I paid for. Don't get me wrong, the food was wonderful at Borough. But I felt that $25 for a mere few ounces of steak was overpriced, even for fine dining. If they increased the portions or added more of the side items to the plate, the price would be more appropriate. That being said, I'll definitely be back and would recommend Borough to anyone who enjoys fine dining. read more

Presentation of food is stunning! Don't ya just love it when you have great food service? Our server told us all about the food and how they would taste in order to help us pick the right dishes for our preferences.... Who does that these days? I love it. We started with the free bread. They'll ask if you want some so say yes! There's all types of different bread and the salted butter is super soft and perfect for each of them. I ordered the salmon... Which is the best dish according to our waiter. He loves it and I certainly enjoyed everything about it. They poured the coconut milk in the bowl plate for me and it was really cool. The flavors were sweet, there was pineapple and black rice alone with broccolini which is like a skinny broccoli. I recommend trying this!! We also tried the lamb. It was really tough and they gave us a sharp knife to cut it. I did like the sauces for the lamb but the salmon was for the win! For dessert we ordered the Gooseberry and it was alright. I wouldn't recommend this one. The whipped cream wand the roasted nuts mixed with the ice cream was awesome but the cake was just gooey and kind of thick. I give it a 2/5. We also bought 2 beers. It's not a huge selection but they've got some great stuff on the menu. Overall, great service and beautiful food presentation. Our total bill with a tip was $100. Yikes. We had dinner here the other night with a couple of friends... service was a bit disappointing considering the price range of the restaurant, the server seemed to just not care being present and was rushing us every time he'd stop by the table. The drinks were absolutely incredible, the burger is a must try, regardless of how long it will take to get ready. The desserts were super disappointing. Make sure to park on a well lit area, our friends' car got smashed into even though it was on a paid parking area. Downtown MPLS is no longer safe - so maybe get an Uber to dine here. The restaurant gave us a $100 gift card for the inconvenience and as you can see their note below I think they expected me to not to mention anything to others. I understand this was in the city and not the restaurant's fault but it is important to share that this is not a safe area to park the car - the intent isn't to bash the restaurant but rather, bring awareness. read more

Very nice staff! 3 stars as the heirloom tomato dish had whey and sourdough sprinkled on top, which felt like eating dirt. The bok choy was wilted and sour tasting. I wish I could say something good about my experience at this restaurant, but there is nothing redeeming about what happened last night. We made reservations several weeks ago and specifically requested outdoor seating for my 32nd birthday - I was flying into town and meeting old friends for dinner and this place was recommended by so many people... When we arrived we stood in front of the host stand inside and were ignored for at least 5 min by a woman who we later found out was the manager. She never welcomed us, never said hello or even acknowledged we were standing there - we were the only ones inside. After a FULL 5 minutes she finally acknowledged us only to tell us there was no outside seating. She sent us back outside to the Parlour host to check for an outside table. I will compliment the parlour host for being very polite and doing his best to accommodate us at this point. We politely explained we had requested outdoor seating and he placed us at the table at the end of the patio. Great! We were seated and told a server would be with us shortly. After about 20 min a server did acknowledge he would be by shortly. After another 10 minutes he reappeared and took our drink order. It was another 20 min before we saw him again. We asked about our drinks and he responded over his shoulder telling us, "be patient" as he walked away again. By this time - almost a full hour - my friends were encouraging me to leave. We had been waiting far too long to have our server be so flippant. I followed our server and pointed out we had been waiting since 730 - it was now 8:25. He then told me "No, you haven't." Finally, we went back to the host stand to ask for the manager - turns out it was the woman who never acknowledged us to begin with. She apologized and essentially said it was due to a new POS system. That is really no excuse to be ignored in my opinion. While we were speaking with her, another table right next to us began complaining to a server that they hadn't been served either. The manager then said she was going to send me an e-mail apologizing and including gift cards... we haven't received anything. Honestly - worst service I have ever had. read more

Let me start with, I love the food here! The Parlour Bar space is super cool with great drinks and the main restaurant space is spot on--their burger is amazing, and this leads to the problem. I went last Saturday and with 3 friends and started our evening downstairs with drinks and then when our reservation was called headed upstairs to the main restaurant. We started with wine and apps and everything was going fine until it came to the entrees. One of our party was just feeling like something lighter and asked if she could get the Parlour Burger. The server said no that they couldn't serve it in the restaurant but she could go downstairs and have it after dinner--odd solution, but whatever. I went to speak to the manager and asked if one of our party could get the burger and her curt response was, 'No. Go to the bar if you want that,' and this is where things went off the rails. As a manager, she had a lot of options that didn't include serving the burger to us, but her response was curt and didn't provide any solution for our party. I told her that we'd be leaving and to get our check. As we were getting up, she came by to say again that she 'just couldn't serve the burger in the restaurant.' I replied, 'You are CHOOSING not to serve it.' She smiled at our table and smugly said, 'Yes. I. Am.' We left and went over to Freehouse for the rest of our dinner. At Freehosue, we mentioned what happened to our server and she said w/o missing a beat, 'Do you want me to send someone over to get you the Parlour Burger? I'm happy to do it.' Now that was customer service and solving a problem! You, my friends at Borough have a lot to learn about customer service. Maybe take a queue from your neighbors down the road. BEST carpaccio I've ever had and the bartenders were well versed in cocktail making and showing their patrons a great time. We were really grateful for the hospitality and the delicious food. The service was the cherry on top for us. We felt right at home and were directed to the most delicious dishes and made to feel right at home. I only wished I would have spent all of my vacation funds on eating here and no where else while in Minnesota. Oysters- on POINT. It's thee most perfect bun to the two beef patty ratio (you cannot even tell there are two patties) that I have ever had in the Twin Cities. I learned from my burger experience that if you really want a good burger it's all about enjoying the nakedness of meat and bread; how the first burger was even invented. Not into burgers? Third time here. Simple looking but very tasty menu. The octopus has a well deserved reputation as their specialty. Steak was fine (mushrooms with it very interesting). Scallops were smaller than described but in a PHENOMENALsauce. Disappointed that the red wines by the glass were served decidedly too warm (those wines at those prices should be stored and served properly). Lots of open doors (outdoor dining was popular that night) made for a buggy interior, and for some reason the lights kept going brighter and darker. Service was excellent as usual. I had very high expectations for Borough and had been wanting to try it for awhile so was a little disappointed to walk out the door thinking, "Well, that was just okay." The atmosphere and service were fantastic - so let's get that out of the way first. The modern but warm, well-curated decor make for an intimate setting, and our waitress was knowledgeable, honest, and had an impeccable sense of timing. Absolutely no complaints there! The food itself though was confusing, and good but not great. The plate size concept was a little all-over the place. The small plates weren't all small, and the larger weren't all large - meaning some starters were on the smaller side while others were larger, and some of the large plates were minuscule compared to the others - so that was confusing. I can't open the menu online for some reason so won't be able to cite the exact dishes we had, but the four of us essentially ordered the cheese cracker, pasta, lobster ravioli, a smaller tomato dish, and sausage and schnitzel (from their Butcher menu). The two things that were outstanding were the cheese cracker and the lobster ravioli, but the rest was just alright. Definitely not bad! But also not amazing. For dessert we ordered two of the ultra frozen chocolate ice cream / mousse that featured apple purée, rosemary ice and some other layer. The apple purée was delightful but the rosemary was too heavy and had a confusing flavor profile overall. One person in our group ordered the gjetost which was super interesting! I think it almost would have been better if it was blocked and not flaked, but still good! Overall, I don't think I need a return visit to Borough. Parlour is much more my speed! read more

I've been to Borough 3x now and have loved every visit. The decor is simple but pretty--a great place for any occasion (date night, catching up with friends, family dinners). I've ordered something different every time I've visited. The first time I visited I ordered a pasta with beets that was OK in my opinion, but the tartare and octopus starters were delicious! I recently visited for lunch and ordered the flank steak salad--YUM. It was only $15 and a massive portion with a generously sized cut of steak. Highly recommend. Pro tip--if you call to make your reservation for dinner, you can specifically ask to be seated at the bar or the table next to the bar. I love Borough. I went for brunch recently and then shortly after, for restaurant week. Service here is impressive. Their servers have great personalities and their hosts are extremely hospitable. The food- omg. YUM! Here's what we had for our 3-course meal: - Falafel: 9/10. This was so yummy! Loved the cucumber based sauce that came with it. Super refreshing. - Chicken wings: 9/10. Finger lickin' good. Nice and crispy. Both of these apps were good enough size portions to share. - Parlour Burger: 20/10. I absolutely loved it. It was such a steal to have as a restaurant week deal. Perfect amount of seasoning on the patties that to think of adding ketchup is nearly a sin. And that's something to take into consideration from me because I normally drown everything in ketchup. For dessert, it was a cookie which our server was so kind enough to pack for us since we didn't have room for it. Side note, their brunch pancakes are super fluffy (available only on the weekends). Without a doubt the absolute best hamburger I have ever had!! Yes they have a full menu and a full bar. Honestly people, locals come just for the burgers!!! They have a spot downstairs too called the Parlour!! You can get said burger there too. If you are ever in downtown Minneapolis put this on your list. Go where the locals go you can't go wrong. I can only imagine this place during the summer. They have a great patio with valet parking. If you are fortunate enough you can land some prime street parking. I got lucky. read more

Stopped in for lunch during restaurant week and right away I was taken aback by how modern and inviting the restaurant looks. The place definitely has a contemporary warehouse-type feel to it with large window panels that provide natural lighting and brighten the atmosphere. The restaurant week lunch menu was a featured three-course meal for $15: 1. Falafel (5/5 stars): I can honestly say this is the best falafel that I have ever had in my life, and that includes the time I spent in Greece. The perfectly crispy outside gives way to a moist and flavorful curry filling that isn't overpowering. The cucumber yogurt puree that accompanied the dish was refreshingly light, in stark contrast to most tahini sauces you will find at a typical mediterranean restaurant. 2. Parlour Burger (3/5): Was incredibly excited to try the Borough staple, and was not disappointed! The burger itself has brisket incorporated in the meat and was incredibly juicy, not overly salty, and had a nice char on the bun. The burger absolutely melts in your mouth and made me wish I could double stack the patties into one burger. In sharp contrast to the lower quality food many restaurants have for restaurant week, Borough demonstrates an admirable, consistent quality in all the food that is served, regardless of the occasion. 3. "Cookie" (3/5 stars): Dessert was a simple cookie that had the semblance of a dark-chocolate cookie but a completely different taste. The cookie was savory and had a hint of sea salt and curry that although was surprising at first, didn't taste bad and seemed like an acquired taste. Overall, the service was solid and the food was high quality and great value for the price. I will definitely be back, especially to try the famous Sunday brunch pancakes. TIP: Make reservations beforehand, as it can get quite crowded even for lunch on a weekday. read more

Came here to celebrate a birthday and was able to get a last minute Saturday night reservation. The restaurant was packed and popping when we arrived, yet we were seated on time. And our server was the perfect mix of attentive and hands-off. We shared the king crab, octopus, lamb meatballs, scallops, and strawberries & cream dessert. Straight up - best octopus, lamb meatballs, and scallops I've ever had. Major kudos. These are some of my favorite protein options and I order them out whenever they're on a menu - Borough did each one perfectly. So much flavor. The scallops melted in your mouth and the octopus was so tender! Dessert was the least exciting option. I'd say skip the dessert and go downstairs to Parlour and order a cocktail to finish off the night. read more

Before our visit to Minneapolis, I had read rave reviews for both Borough and the burger at Parlour - I called to find out how I could get access to both menus, and the lovely person I spoke with on the phone hooked us up with a seat at the kitchen counter (one of my favorite places to sit). We had a great dinner and loved watching the kitchen do amazing, professional, and delicious work all evening. We were kind of all over the menu, but we ended up ordering: - Sturgeon with everything crepe, pickled egg, cream cheese, capers - Beef tartare - Pork belly with pear, pie crust, allspice - The Parlour burger All of the love and praise and drool for the Parlour burger is WELL-DESERVED. It was seriously juicy, amazing, and mouth-watering. I took one bite and just laughed at how good it was. The rest of our dishes were great, too. I enjoyed the pork belly a lot - the sweet additions of the pear and pie crust were surprising, but worked. Service was terrific, and watching the great folks in the kitchen made for a truly memorable night. read more

Visited Borough on a Saturday morning for brunch. I had seen photos of their unique pancakes and had to try them for myself. We arrived shortly before 11am and there was a wait to be seated, so we opted for the bar. The brunch drink selection is robust and we wanted to try them all. My friend tried the Good Morning Sunshine and I tried the Drum Solo. They were tasty but the drum solo didn't have too much grapefruit flavor. We would have opted to try a couple more but at $12 a pop we decided to wait until next time to try another. I ordered the pancakes with a side of hash brown and she ordered the biscuits and gravy. The pancakes were served with two flavors of syrup, a smoked bacon and strawberry. Overall everything was very good but the service is a bit slower, drinks and food than I would have suspected. read more
