I'm not sure if it's just because I was starving, but I really enjoyed the food here! The restaurant itself isn't anything fancy, and the food choices are all pretty standard. All of the dim sum dishes we had were fantastic though! We had shrimp dumplings, pan fried pork dumplings, bbq port buns, and an egg soup with Chinese donuts. My favorite was definitely the pan fried dumplings - they had a perfect amount of meat inside and the flavors were phenomenal. The soup was also great, especially with the donut! The food did take a while to come out after we ordered, so I wouldn't recommend if you're in a hurry. Overall service was good though, and the staff were all super friendly! I would go back!

Broadway Dim Sum Cafe surprised me in the best way. I was expecting mid, based on some of the reviews, but this place slapped. The pork and veggie buns were fresh and fluffy with that good steamy dough and flavorful filling. The chow fun was delicious. Chewy, silky noodles with great wok flavor and not oily. But the real star was the braised pig trotters. Fall-apart tender, with the perfect mix of rich fatty bits and soft lean meat, all draped over a bed of cabbage soaking in sauce. I still think about that. Overall the food hit, service was fast, and it felt like a true neighborhood spot - no frills, just good food flying out of the kitchen. Def coming back.

Been going to this place since I was a kid. At one point they had the store to the right also so there was a doorway in the right wall when you walk in. It's changed again this past time. Small, but you can always split a large round table with others (old school style). Saw some old folks as well as what looked like millennials there enjoying their chow fun. Was gonna get the dimsum but settled with phoenix claw, paigwut, and beef stew with daikon pot. My friend loved everything except the paigwut. It was my fault. You can get better paigwut elsewhere. But the beef stew with rice was outta this world. And you can dine on phoenix claw like nobody's business. Tell them to bring food out at once or close to each other or food will get cold. Price is pretty good. Hard to find a place that don't charge tax!! Would definitely go back. Also they take Apple Pay!

We were actually going to another place but it was close . Ended up here to eat some delicious dim sum. The wonton soup was the best !! Place is not fancy or big but nice little place . Service was good. Definitely try it out !

The food here was very fresh and tasty. We loved everything we ate. The service was friendly. We waited a long time for the check and boxes but didn't mind. Just don't come and sit when you are in a hurry. It's a very basic place but you can't beat the fresh and affordable food!

A la Carte menu at Broadway Dim Sum Cafe in San Francisco.

You say the neon lights are bright on Broadway...well at Broadway Dim Sum Cafe, the dim sum menu items are served just well enough for those to enjoy. Located on the eponymous Broadway in San Francisco's Chinatown neighborhood, Broadway Dim Sum Cafe has been serving traditional Cantonese menu items for what feels like generations, as their still fairly newish pink awning is a reminder for dim sum fans of what place they are actually looking for amongst all of their rivals in the Chinatown business district. What brought me to sample a variety of the dim sum delights that Broadway Dim Sum Cafe offers up is the fact that they were participating in San Francisco Restaurant Week for the Fall of 2023, which for an affordable fast-casual dining option in the city, this was a rarity, as usually businesses sign up to participate because they can offer diners usually a three-course set price menu option with a curated choice of an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. But at Broadway Dim Sum Cafe they uniquely offer a Dim Sum Combo for only 15 dollars, which includes three steamed pork buns, four steamed shrimp dumplings or Haw Gows, four steamed pork dumplings or Siu Mai and one canned beverage of your choice. They also offered a lunchtime entrée item and iced tea option, but considering the time I had I opted for the dim sum pre-fix menu option. With a deal like that, I was on board to try something new, and since Broadway Dim Sum Cafe was so close to my work place, I thought a quick walk up Broadway to grab my meal for a takeout lunch was just the thing I needed to break up the monotony of my day. Plus the benefit of being able to grab a quick and easy takeout meal and still not be too far away from work worked out perfectly for me. Upon entry to Broadway Dim Sum Cafe, one will notice that there are certainly no frills operation here, as they have a case of cellophane wrapped desserts in one case, and more non-perishable dim sum items behind another glass case. In fact, all of their steamed dim sum items are behind their front glass partition facing the front of their restaurant, which ironically is covered by additional pictures of their menu, and other menu items written in Chinese characters with corresponding images. So in order to see what their dim sum items look like you really have to step inside and peer over their front counter to see what they are offering. In less than five minutes, their server knew exactly what I came here for, as I managed to point to their sign and put up an index finger to represent the number one as if to say that I wanted one of these. She told me to look in their glass case for a soft drink of my choice, which included some nice canned tea and pearl drinks, as she assembled my takeout food order. Costing only $15.33, which included tax, I was out the door with a heavy plastic takeout box of food to take back to work to feast on. Upon my return back to my office, I decided to dive into each of my three dim sum items to see which ones I liked the best, and honestly the answer was simple, as their Pork Siu Mais were tightly wrapped and ready to be consumed. Their Har Gows were decent, but honestly nothing to write about, as since everything was served at room temperature, it had to be immediately reheated in a microwave, and therefore turned each dumpling into a bit of a mushy experience taste-wise, which made me not like it as much as I should. The BBQ pork steamed were slightly disappointing as well, as there was way too much breaded bun for my taste, as there wasn't enough pork filling, as the inside was fine, but just needed a little more so I could enjoy every bite. But as I ate every bite of my takeout meal, and managed to take home a little more for a future meal, I thought to myself, how often would I get this much food for so little money. If Broadway Dim Sum Cafe had not participated in San Francisco Restaurant week, then I never would have visited, so mission accomplished, as the whole goal of this promotion was to discover new businesses with their affordable multi-course specially curated menu. I was also able to glance at their lunch and dinner menu featuring their entrées, and their Chow Fun and Chow Mein dishes were sold at $10.50 each, and that comes with a protein topping. I think the price points make it worth a second look alone, and when you're walking down that street, and you ain't had enough to eat...I won't quit til I know that Broadway Dim Sum Cafe is that star I know it can be!

My friend and I came here at 2:30pm on a Saturday and were given menus and water quickly. I ordered the shrimp dumplings dim sum and also a shrimp chow mein. The food was fine. Nothing that amazing and the dim sum wasn't super flavorful. I expected better quality for paying $5.50 for four dumplings. My friend ordered the sweet and sour chicken and she opted to leave the dish uneaten. She also had the bbq pork buns which she did enjoy. Good service but the food wasn't anything to write home about.

Best FRESH SESAME SEED BALLS!!! I came in during the afternoon because the dim sum place down the street ran out of sesame balls. They probably took about 20 minutes to make my order, but it was worth it! They were delicious and fresh. The best sesame balls I've ever had. It's more of a restaurant/cafe. Not a dim sum bakery. So you have to wait for them to prepare your dim sum, which is better if you have the time because it is FRESH and not sitting in steam baskets all day. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to try the dinner plates. Next time!

Really tasty dim sum and traditional Chinese lunch options. I wish there were more dim sum choices, but the food is really tasty and service is friendly. This place also conveniently takes reservations during the crowded Sat brunch rush.

Food taste is the average Cantonese Dim Sum. Good portions and pricing. Nothing spectacular, just nice casual ambiance for eating. It took a bit to get the food out but that's just because we were the first ones in there, once we got the food the rest of service was good with frequent check-ins from the host. Good place to get straight-to-the-point dim sum on the block. Siu Mai was juicy and filling. Har Gow was also good but stickier than I'm used to.

Was walking in Chinatown and stumbled across this place. We wanted to order a few things, but the only thing they had left was 4 siu mai. They said that if we waited 10 minutes, they could make everything else. Thus, we ordered 6 bbq pork buns ($4.50 for 3), 12 siu mai ($4.50 for 4). We then went to walk down the street to get drinks. When we came back ten minutes later, the food was ready and they also threw in a few complimentary sesame balls on the house. (this was really nice of them) It really felt like a welcoming environment. This is a local business I would support. It is a nice ambiant, have not ordered dine-in, but I'm sure it will be just as good. Shout out to the boy handling the register at the front! Doing great. ++ all the food was amazing! loved the siu mai & the bbq pork buns! very full & flavorful! thank u, will be back for sure

Whenever I'm in the Chinatown area, I'm always excited to try a different dim sum spot. Even better if I can find an underrated one. Unfortunately, this one may be a bit overrated at the current 3.5 stars It's cheap, but I would describe the quality as simply, "eatable". Serving sizes are adequate. For $20, I got 3 dishes that could easily serve 2 people. Surprisingly not a lot of dim sum on the menu despite dim sum being a part of the restaurant's name Not really any curb appeal and the inside matches. Positioned on a loud street (Broadway) and no real ambiance or decor. All would be fine if the food was stellar, but that's not the case. They don't even have beer *sad face* I started with the chicken chow fun. It had a bland taste throughout. I tried putting some salt on it but the shaker had been out so long that the salt was solidified and wouldn't shake out I also grabbed 2 items off the dim sum menu. The pork buns were "meh". I think the pork was sweet and tender but there was so much bun, it really masked the taste. I'd say the bun to pork ratio was 80:20. The steamed shumai wasn't bad. It tasted like a spiced sausage

** The following review reflects my takeout experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** For some reason, I keep wanting a chorus line of dancers in spangly sequins to greet me at the door because of the showbiz pizazz of the name. Broadway Dim Sum signals to me a big opening number with a lot of tap dancing and Bernadette Peters belting out the title tune written by Stephen Sondheim, of course. Too much to expect? Apparently because truth be told, it's a bit dark and drab on the inside. But I came here for takeout because I was in the mood for dumplings. A pandemic does that to me. I found the place rifling through Grubhub in Union Square and figured I could dart my way through Grant Avenue to pick up my order. It turned out to be easier than I thought as Chinatown has become something of a ghost town during the quarantine. I must've been hungry because I got enough for a couple of meals, and they were cheap...much like me. In a small container were four Steamed Shrimp Dumplings ($5.50) and four Steamed Pork Siu Mai ($4.95) (photo: https://bit.ly/3kC6X7D). They were tasty and traditional. In a much larger container were three Steamed Meat & Veggie Buns ($3.95) and three Steamed Custard Buns ($3.95) (photo: https://bit.ly/32S89xI). While the buns were soft, the fillings tasted a bit packaged. The highlight turned out to be the $3.95 Water Chestnut Cake which was not really a cake but rather like finger Jello (photo: https://bit.ly/2UyY0Sd). Ah, childhood memories. One more time, Bernadette! FOOD - 4 stars...dim sum the satisfying, old-fashioned way with the water chestnut cake the peak AMBIANCE - 3 stars...didn't stay, couldn't stay but it was kinda dark SERVICE - 4 stars...fast with no fuss TOTAL - 4 stars...when you need dumplings to make it through the pandemic RELATED - Exploring Chinatown? Haven't been in person yet so I am speaking solely off of takeout options. So after getting their food about 4828732 times I think its pretty long overdue I drop the deets on this little gem. This is our "official" dim sum option for weeknight take out. Personal favorites for me are always going to be the salt/pepper wings, the steamed pork buns, the crystal shrimp dumplings, and the scallion pancakes. My wife loves the soup dumplings, the shu mai. We could eat those dishes every week until we die pretty much, they are reliably good and comforting. Particular shout out on the pork buns though because they are just the absolute best consistency from a filling/bun standpoint. Soft, pillowy, they are glorious. I used to get pork buns from Good Mong Kok Bakery, but tbh, this is about 10x better. The soup dumpling also are quite good, I like the spicy ones but the black truffle is defintely worth it for the occasional splurge. They give you the red vinegar for it too which not all places do. Everything one needs to enjoy. I haven't been in person so I couldn't speak for the service or the location, but if you want a spot that delivers on time and often includes items for free (the pork buns are now free for orders over $50), this is great value and just great food. I walked into the restaurant about 45 minutes before closing time at 9:30 PM and several other diners came in after I was seated. The unsettled weather made the people hungry for dumplings. Bao is warm and woody and serene on the inside, a great counterpoint to the bustle of Valencia at every hour. Upon entering there is a large window looking on to the kitchen prep area where culinary experts are often at work constructing the food diners later enjoy on their plates. Tonight a couple of wizards were in the process of making chicken potstickers. Even being vegetarian, just seeing how the dumplings and other items are made is like seeing secrets being shared. I love it and it sets the vibe for the restaurant. My order consisted of the steamed vegetarian buns and sautéed string beans. The buns come out beautifully presented and taste even better: the bun itself is just slightly sweet and that sweetness adds an amazing dimension to the chopped fresh vegetables inside. Can't tell you what any of these veggies are individually and I don't care, they are so good. Next came the sautéed string beans and the sear on the beans themselves was perfect and smoky and delicious. The crispness of the sautee makes the string beans a lovely pairing with the soft yummy of the steamed buns. Last came the sesame balls as a sweet meal ending. I love donuts and fresh-made sesame balls are similar to a donut hole just with a filling that is actually food and so sweetly tasty. The outer fry was crisp and the insides absolutely perfect. Three dishes, all fantastic, and I walk home happy and thankful to Bao for a great simple meal!

I love watching them make dumplings in the window. This is a great location on Valencia with some…read morenice outdoor seating. I love people-watching in the Mission! This is slightly more upscale Chinese/dumplings/dim sum than I'm used to (I usually go to Chinatown.) I like their - Steamed Sweet Red Bean Bao, Steamed Sweet Egg Custard Bao, (very Instagrammable and not overly-sweet.) - Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings. Pretty good - Sichuan Xiao Long Bao and Shanghai Xiao Long Bao: must-get! - shiu mai and har gow: my must-gets at any dumpling/dim sum place. Interior is polished and clean. Nice to bike to or go to before or after Dolores Park. Service is fine. I keep coming back!

Quick and tasty spot. Came here to split a siu mai while waiting for my order from another spot…read more The cashier was super friendly and the food came out quickly. Heads up that this is mostly a takeaway spot and they only have 1-2 small tables. The siu mai was fairly big and I liked that the order came with a bunch of sauces- chili oil, soy sauce, and a hot sauce. As a big sauce fan, I appreciated the selection! I'll be back to try most of their selection.

I've only ordered dim sum from here through Too Good to Go (2g2g). Like their Chinatown location,…read moreI find the dim sum to be oily. But overall, it's good. The baked bbq pork buns are sweet with a decent amount of filling. The deep fried dumpling is plump, juicy, and crunchy. The shrimp and chive dumplings are my favorite. It's full of shrimp with a slightly thicker skin, which I think adds a nice chewiness. The veggie egg rolls were okay. I personally wouldn't order those, even if I was craving them. The spare ribs had a really nice savory flavor from the sauce. The egg tarts were okay. I need to note that these bags are leftovers from the day, so they're not as fresh. But they held up the next day so I was able to stretch 2 meals out of them. I can't comment on service since these bags are only for pick up. But they quickly provide the bags once the window open. And it's a small space, with maybe 2 tables. So this place is probably best for to-go orders. Their 2g2g bags have more variety than their Chinatown location. Not sure how many dim sum options there are in the Mission, but I would go here if I was in the area and craving a shrimp and chive dumpling.
