The BROASTED chicken is sooooooooooooooo delicious! (Broasted and fried only look similar in the finished product: The process and taste are significantly different.) I got the mashed potatoes and gravy which were to die for. They use red potatoes which give it an extra umph. The pie is handmade and extra tasty. Worth the price. That said, it was one of the worst days to go in there. I think their AC was down and it was a very hot and humid day. They had fans on, but the only one doing anything was at the register. This place has been around since the 1960's and holds soooo many memories! My Grandparents used to come here before I was born and when when I lived with them in east l.a. ..., no matter where we lived we kept coming back and still do to this very day! The taste of their chicken is like no other and I have tried chicken box and a few other places but they're not as tasty as this place! If you are used to those "commercial" cooperate chicken places you won't get it and you won't appreciate this place so don't even bother because you will just be negative and critical!! Lol. For reasons that are still unclear to me, I happened to be in the area recently and just stopped in this place. I was just hungry and wasn't thinking much about my choice in restaurants. I had never heard of broasted chicken. I was really surprised. I got an excellent home cooked meal and some of the tastiest chicken I have ever eaten. The decor could use some love but it also sort of goes with the down home nature of the food and service in the restaurant. Let me say, I've been coming to this location since I was 12 years old ( which is at least 4 decades). This is a small mom and pop shop, where the chicken is like no other place on earth, and boy have I traveled! Don't expect anything fancy because the focus in this place is the food, not the location. The idea is to bring country to California with the finest recipe for chicken, that even cornel Sanders can't compete with. I hope Gerri and Mike never, ever sell this place because I plan to eat here on a weekly basis for the rest of my life. The decor is suppose to be country, and old school, not modern day as many have commented here. It is not a fancy modern place, its an old school country mom and pop shop! Expect great, delicious food that has not changed its quality for decades. This place does have good fried chicken but I strongly suggest buying food to go because the place just doesn't give a sense of cleanliness. They have floors & walls that seems to be over a decade old. You might think you have gum on your shoes as you walk on their floor, so sticky . Tables were dirty, we really had second thoughts of ordering food as we thought maybe the kitchen is as bad, but we saw letter grade A so we did order and was pleased. They should really invest in improving their appearance & I bet business would improve 100%. read more

I don't think I've run into restaurant where the staff could care less about what you think or what you order. We tried a five-piece dinner, opting for white meat. Three of the puniest chicken breast and two wings. Never thought of wings as being white meat. Didn't matter, the whole meal was so over fried, it was difficult to find any edible pieces. The menu says spuds. Try potato wedges, again over fried to the point not worthy of trying to eat. You're better off going to the market deli to get roasted or fried chicken. Why did I never stop before? Gah, I keep asking myself that. Anyway, on my way to Broguiere's to pick up some leche, tortillas y huevos the other day, I passed this place, as usual, and said to myself, "Banani, let's try that place for lunch today on your way back." So, I made my left on Maple to get my milk and on my way back crossed Beverly Blvd and right into a parking spot in front of the place. I walk in and my first impression is that the place hasn't had anything new in it's dining area since it opened a few decades ago. Still, I was not deterred. (I've had some awesome food at places like this.) I approach the counter as I look over the menu. I order a 5-pc all white meat meal and a half-rack of ribs. The 5-pc chicken meal came with 2 large potato wedges and 2 dinner rolls. After ordering, I mentioned it was my first time there. I then look to my left and check out the pies they had on display. I ask where they get their pies from. They (they=the owner) say something about Martino's (not sure if that was the orig company or the name of the company they are under now) and that they've been getting their pies their for over 30 years. I look at him in a dubious fashion because EVERYONE has the best pie, cherry pie. He then has his cashier grab and pack a slice for me. My order was to go so as I sat there waiting the 20 minutes or so it takes to cook up the chicken and things, I take a bite of the pie. The pie was tasty. It looked good - plenty of actual cherries (and none of the overloading of the jelly that other pies have as filler, blecch). So far so good. Twenty minutes is a long time to wait so as I sat there, I really checked out the place and thought, wow this place could be cleaner. No bother, I look at the menu and added cole slaw and bbq beans to my order. Everything is finally ready and packed to go. I will share this bounty with my two housemates (aka my daughters). I get home and open the packages. The chicken pieces were large, I mean, huge. I was already hoping for the best. I also see the large crinkly cut potato wedges. The dinner rolls looked safe to eat. I pick up a breast and pinch some of the skin off and taste it. It was very good - light yet flavorful. Still, I am trying to lay off chicken skin so no more skin for the moment. I then take a piece of breast and place the warm piece on my tongue. I chew. The chicken is soft enough. But the clincher was the flavor of the chicken. It was very good, not overpowering but enough of something there to make you wonder if they brine their chicken (I'd imagine you can brine chicken, right? right??) I was sold. That chicken is good. From then on, everything else was one good thing after another. The cole slaw was not creamy or runny. It was very simple yet you could definitely taste that it was cole slaw. The bbq beans were no like no other. Wow, the beans had itsy bitsy pieces of ham. Those are some great legumes (I think it's ham...so tiny and my eyesight ain't what it used to be...haha, wisdom, oh the tricks you play.) All's I can say is that I would've given them a 5 had they had some steamed veggies. Whatever, next time I am also getting potato salad and some macaroni salad. And I'll pick up a slice of banana cream pie. I'll get through all those pie flavors one slice at a time. What I appreciate about this location is that it helps to support the local high school students by giving them employment and teaching them responsibility. Okay I have got to say that this honestly is one of the best places to get chicken ever! The chicken here is broasted which basically keeps the chicken juicy and crispy as the same time, and I have never had such good chicken before! They always cook to order so the chicken hasn't been already cooked and sitting all day, it's made fresh! Also, their broasted spuds is unlike any potato wedge or fries I've had, so delicious! And that's not even the best part! I just went in a day ago and they had freshly homemade pies! The mini pies are to die for and at the price they're set at, it's always a bang for your buck! The food and service was great, but the place was dirty. We decided to eat there, the table was so dirty from the last customers. Lucky I had some wipes in my purse and cleaned the table so that we could eat comfortably. I then went to the restroom to wash my hands and the bathroom was so really dirty, there were several black strands of hair in the sink. Next time we will order to go.
