Quick Review: Unacceptable and poor service. Pricy food. Very yummy. Inconsiderate of customer's time. Lengthy Review: The Broken Yoke on Harbor is a fun and nicely decorated restaurant that sits semi inconspicuously in a once slightly desolated shopping center. My girlfriend and I got there almost a week after it opened and the line for brunch was very long. We arrived at 10am and were seated at about 10:45 after hearing it would be a 15-20 minute wait. Waiting a little longer to be seated wasn't the worst thing in the world, but a more accurate timeframe would have been absolutely appreciated--as someone who places a great value on time. Once we were seated, a waitress got our drink order after 10 minutes of sitting and waiting. Once we actually received our drinks another 10 minutes later, we were ready to order. By now it was a little after 11, and knowing I had plans to go to be with my family at 2:00pm, I thought I was still in the clear. We order our food and began what we would soon find out to be a feature film's length adventure. We waited and talked, talked and waited, then waited and talked some more. Our bellies rumbled, our patience grew thin, and my planed commitment of spending time with family grew closer and closer. We looked around and the place was bustling--waiters and waitresses ran around bussing and delivering food but ours was nowhere in sight. I had finished both my girlfriend's and my water by now and our cups sat empty on the table for the next hour and a half. After an hour and a half of not being tended to at all, my girlfriend and I were about to take off--hungry and annoyed that our time had been so rudely wasted. Before we left, I saw two friends of mine were at The Broken Yoke as well and were eating their food. I started to look for them when our food finally arrived. By now it was too late to leave--it was 1:45pm. We ate our food and it was very delicious. I had the Tiki Toast (as recommended by their menu) and my girlfriend had the chorizo burrito, that was sub-par. The food was good but not NEARLY worth the wait. The worst part was that we were rarely tended to by our waitress (once in the entirety of the visit) and that we were not compensated at all for the poor service and unreasonable wait time. Later that evening my friend and I were talking about our experiences at The Broken Yoke and although my friend also had to wait a long time for food and service, they were compensated with 50% off when we were not. That was where I drew the line and decided that was unacceptable. We will not be returning and hope that others chose to do so as well. read more

There are over 30 broken yolk's across the country.... it's no longer that small chain that started in San Diego years ago....it's basically a Dennys or Norms, or Ihop. My wife and I live near the new Broken Yolk off harbor and decided to have breakfast their last Sunday. After a 30 minute wait, the friendly host showed us to our table. As we sat down I immediatly noticed the restaurant had a slight convalescent home smell to it...let's just say it's not quite the syrup and bacon aroma you expect when you are at a breakfast diner. Our sever was quick to greet us, deliver our coffees and take our food order. I got the Golden State benedict and my wife ordered some over easy eggs, ham and and english muffin. I had intended on getting a community plate of pancakes but the dishes comming out of the kitchen looked a bit dull and figured I would just save the calories. Eggs/Ham/English muffin - simple dish, everything was fine. Golden State Benedict - Hash browns were basic, but very salty. Hollondaise sauce had no acid, just heavy and fatty. I was raised in a generation who watched Mayberry on TV, whose characters stopped in for coffee in their small town restaurant where everybody knew their name. This is such a place. Not happy at all! First, my Belgian waffle was over cooked because it was made before the rest of my food, so they had it in the oven. Second, I watched a cook scoop strawberries on my waffle with his bare hands. I was told cooks don't wear gloves except for with the eggs. Still, a utensil should be used when dealing with wet food. This is my first time visiting after reading all the great yelp reviews. The breakfast was amazing and the location is convenient!!! I arrived on a Sunday afternoon around 12:30 and the wait time was only 15 min. The waiter was pretty quick and efficient with our orders and clearing the table. The the portions were pretty large which isn't the worst thing. The best part is the food was delicious and different I tried the sope Benedict, crunchy French toast and a chorizo omelet. I also order the orange juice which isn't freshly squeezed but still great. Along with a iced butterscotch latte and a iced crazy Carmel latte. The lattes were mostly milk and syrup so if you like your lattes a little stronger then I would add an additional shot of espresso. This place is open with outdoor seating only as indoor seating is closed. Discovered this place and I immediately loved it! My first time around I ordered the golden state Benedict (no bacon for me), a blueberry banana smoothie, a side of home fries and apple juice with classic french toast for my gf. The Benedict's were sooo good - the bread was a bit too burnt and definitely overpowered a lot of the flavor but they made up for it on my follow up visit. All the food tasted so fresh and yummy, so full of flavor. The servers on my both visits have been so pleasant and attentive. On my second visit I tried out their mimosa flight (pomegranate takes First, lemonade, orange juice, then grapefruit from best to worst personally btw), the mom omelette (perfect for all my vegetarians out there!!), and the ranchero skillet (no chorizo for us). The food is just so satisfying, the music selection here is good too. Will continue to be making rounds here for breakfast so I can knock out the rest of the menu! read more

I ordered chiliquiles based on the Yelp recommendations, my wife ordered the John Wayne omelette. Waited another 10 minutes to be served. Wife loved her omelette, I, on the other hand was served cold chiliquiles, cold rice, and cold beans. Took 2 bites and sent it back. Our waiter was very apologetic, offered to get something else for me (I declined, and had more coffee), and took the order off our check. We dropped in for breakfast based on yelp reviews. I had a waffle sandwich, my wife has pancakes and my daughter also had some pancakes and fried potatoes. I think most things were good in general. Portions are large but I can't say I had a favorite item. Our sever had many tables assigned to him and it was difficult to get his attention or the check at the end of the meal. The place seems to be very busy and attracts a lot of locals. I think for me it was missing something. Maybe the busy server and the food being not as memorable as other places I had been worked against my thoughts. The food here is super delicious! I got the Tiki Toast and that thing just exploded all over my tastebud. Just thinking about it again already makes my mouth water. The only downside to this place is how long the wait is. We arrived for lunch as around noon but didn't get seated for 45min. After that it was probably another half hour or so before we got our food. I didn't mind the wait so much though, because our waiter was so polite and the place had a good brunch vibe. Slow service, and the menu is HUGE! Not sure which ones are good and which ones are not. Had to wait 25 minutes for just 2 people on Labor day morning. Ordered chorizo omelette and half way through eating I see there was a HAIR in the middle of my omelette! The omelette itself wasn't good either, chorizo was super salty and the puddle of grease from chorizo was all over the plate. I told the server about the hair and she wasn't very apologetic.
