Man, there must simply be a shortage of breakfast restaurants. Why? Because this place is usually busy. Because of that, I wrongly expected it to be great. The old school places like Cappy's in Newport and Sugar Shack in HB are usually busy, too, and their food is very average -- but at least those places have charm and friendly wait staff. At Broken Yolk, the food was of signficantly lower quality than those old places but making matters worse, the service was careless and slow. Wow, I can mix/match the different eggs benedict choices? Sounds cool! Wrong -- both were terrible. All the ingredients felt incredibly low quality. I paid $17.45 for an OK breakfast burrito. My wife and friends were shocked but I justified it by telling them the burrito had to be really big for the price, Broken Yolk being the same restaurant that made an appearance on Man Vs. Food with a 6lb 12-egg omelet challenge. Sadly the burrito was normal sized and I became the crazy guy that spent $18 for a burrito. Burrito was OK, wish it was stunningly good but it was not. The potato was not crispy and there was too much in proportion to the rest of the fillings. Bacon was a bit hard and not crunchy, the whole thing pulling out with a bite. The tortilla also seemed store bought. It did come with a side of rice and beans, I like them though the beans were watery and I had to mix them with the rice to make them less soupy. I visited this location on 1/3/2025 with my 86 year old Mom who has late stage Alzheimer's. Getting a table was not a problem. My huge disappointment was that they wouldn't let her eat of the kids menu. He appetite has diminished so much that ordering off of a regular menu makes no sense. I have not had this problem elsewhere. Nevertheless, Broken Yolk cafe if Costa Mesa dug in their heels and stated that they would not do it. I left with my mom and just took her home. It was very disappointing. One bright spot for me was that other patrons also left when they saw what happened. I'm shocked at how tone deaf the management could be when it came to those afflicted with dementia. Caregivers don't get the chance to take them out often and you guys really blew this one hard. read more

My friends and family and I have frequently eaten at the Broken Yolk in Costa Mesa. But after today, I will never go again. I donate blood about every 2 months and at a recent donation I was given a gift card for the Broken Yolk valued at $18 or less. I ordered a meal that was $16.95. But it came to $18.26 with tax, so they would not honor the gift card. Of course I said I would pay the 26 cents difference, but nope. they wouldn't honor it. This seems extremely ridiculous to me. Tried Broken Yolk for the first time and was not disappointed!! We added ourselves to the waitlist as we were on the way and upon checking in it was about another 15 minutes because they were super packed. The inside was cute and modern but we sat on the patio because we had a dog (points for being dog friendly!). The menu is huge and I wanted to try so many things but I decided on getting the pick two benedicts. I got the Sope benedict and the chicken and waffle one with a side of hasbrowns. The benedicts were so flavorful and I finished both so fast! My boyfriend got the wild west burger with onion rings and he said it was really good! Decided to give the Broken Yolk a try as it's close to home. It was busy, but to be expected for a Saturday morning. The staff were friendly and seated us in a timely manner. The food was served and looked presentable. Sadly the food lacked flavor and freshness. My omelette was dry and was just ok. Other plate was the Machaca and also lacked flavor and was luke warm when served. Hot sauce was needed to give some flavor. The fruit side was not great either and not edible. The coffee was the highlight. It was hot and pretty good. They kept the coffee filled constantly which was nice. The staff checked on us constantly and were very nice and pleasant. I would give the staff 5 starts but the food really is what makes me give the 3 stars. read more

Where do I start , the wait time was 20 min when I got on the list and didn't get seated in till about 1 hour and 30 min later. The food took forever to come out, the eggs tasted completely bland , no flavor whatsoever. We asked the waiter for our bill and took forever to bring it to us . Even tho he kept passing by us. Omg, their stuffed French toast (banana filled with caramel drizzled on top) is mouth watering. Stuffed French Toast (filled with bananas): 5/5! Bingo! They know how to make a mean French toast. Tuna Melt: 3/5. It was one super sized and stuffed tuna melt. You have to eat it right when it comes out to taste good. I took the other half home and it all came apart and the bread got mushy. Fries on the side. Eh, they were just simple fries. Nothing special. Mimosa flight: 5/5. You just can't go wrong with 4 different flavors of mimosas! I believe they were: cranberry, orange, guava, lemon flavored. Bloody Mary: 5/5. Big and spicy. Just the way I like it Great place for breakfast! We went on a Sunday, and waited about 35 mins to be seated. Which was totally fine. It was a Sunday and that's what the host said the wait would be. However we waited 40 mins for our food at the table. They seemed to have a priority on Food delivery apps like door dash and post mates because those brown paper bags never stopped coming out. The table next to use spoke to a manager and left about 20 mins into waiting but I was grabbing brunch with a good friend and we didn't mind talking the whole time so we decided to stay.
