Black Rock to me in many ways feels like Connecticuts own version of "Southie" (South Boston, that is for those of you who need clarification), for a multitude of reasons, and this place is a great example of why I mean that in a mostly complementary way. In making this statement I am factoring in the one slightly off experience we had here one night when the vibe was overwhelmingly darkly druggie to say the least. Ill leave that one alone, and only say that other than that we had a great time here overall. The food as a whole proved to be very good, and hammered home the point that we had crossed the line into legit New England. The excellent NE Clam Chowder would be perfectly acceptable on the shore or anywhere in Greater Boston and the Raw Bar was solid. Uniformly tasty were the smallish crab cake, and baked clams casino style. Oysters Rockafella were dried out on one occasion and perfectly sumptuous on another. One Tuesday all non-raw bar appetizers were half priced but this seed to be somewhat random, and was not offered on another Tuesday until we asked. There is a good if somewhat erratic beer selection, though no drafts are offered and the solid Dark N Stormys are discounted to 5 bucks any time its raining, you gotta love that. The laid back vibe, dead heavy soundtrack and Uber-chill staff all pay great homage to the well-established and regionally unique New England stoner subculture, as well as the distinctive neighborhood it is located in. read more

This place isn't good. Came here for discounted lobster rolls on Wed/Thurs. I expected the portions to be skimpy, which they were, but they gave us like 10 french fries with our roll. FRENCH FRIES COST NOTHING! If you're going to skimp on the lobster for the roll, at least give customers a ton of fries so they leave full and without feeling ripped off. Waitress was also bad. We had a flat coke (which was a pepsi, and she never mentioned it - not a big deal), and after we mentioned it, she still charged us. She also was just oozing negative vibes and had a constant frown on her face. I get it, people have bad days, but it was a bit much... Also margarita didn't come with salt. We came here on a Sunday for brunch. It was close to our home so we gave it a try. It's a great location but the inside setup is not quite idea. It's more like a bar setting. Where we sat was near a few guys that were smoking and drinking brews not idea when you're sitting for brunch. The food was ok , I had the lobster omelette which was different. I love the garlic buffalo wings and the prime rib special was excellent when I had it. I don't like a lot of seafood but my wife has loved the mussels and clams and the chowder. Kids were happy with plain wings and fries and chicken fingers. Service has been very good and super friendly each time. Had a great time there with family and friends, Sunday afternoon / evening. I heard that the Clam Chowder was award winning. It was without a doubt the best I've EVER tasted! My daughter had something called "Chicken fried steak. I don't know whether it was chicken or steak. But I had some and it was very good. A very well mixed crowd who's company I enjoyed. Not a very big place especially in the winter, when the outside is not usable, but even the people standing seemed to be enjoying the time there The band "Red Planet" play some Grateful Dead music in a way that - when you're not listening and suddenly you just have to move to the music. They were great! This part of Fairfield Ave, in Bridgeport, is not far from the nice area of "St. Mary's". Also, I have talked to a 3rd shift BPort police officer at my health club. He tells me the area is not at all unsafe. A "good neighborhood" Never felt unsafe and although they don't have parking, we had no problem and felt quite safe parking on the street there. Hope to see "The Red Planet" again and to visit BRYAC more often. read more

Food is very good. Service is below average. The owner does not staff the place appropriately. Additionally, the food is priced a bit high and the beer is extremely overpriced. We ate outside and waited for over 30 minutes after we got out food for refills, I had to go to the bar to get my own beer. And the waitress even apologized for the poor service but did not compensate us at all on the check. She just said she got busy inside. Lastly smoking weed on the patio is tolerated at this restaurant. Not sure if it is legal or not, just kind of poor form while others are dining. I'll never go back and will advise folks to stay away from this place, I'm in the military and risk my career if I am exposed to that stuff. It's too bad because the food is fantastic. Tuesday night was 1/2 price starters all night. I tried the dogfish 60 minute IPA (one of 3 beers on tap), the Lobsterdilla (a lobster quesadilla), lobster bisque and fried avocado chips. Everything was fine, but... it took over an hour to get a bowl of soup, the 6 shrimp we ordered never arrived (although sitting at the bar I could have helped myself, so no idea why they never arrived) and a friend who is a regular waited at least 30 minutes for someone to take a drink order. So while the people who work here seemed great and the patrons were also great and the setting is great (except for the parking), the experience was just so-so. Anyone can have an off night, and again the people working here were very nice and knew their stuff. Perhaps they don't staff appropriately or maybe they don't have good systems in place. I will give them another shot as there's a lot to like here, but I'll be sure to pick a time when I'm not too hungry or short on time! read more

Came here for lunch on a Saturday with my husband and it was a laid back and quiet vibe. I'm sure it is different in the evening when they have live music. There is a pretty extensive Seafood menu. I got a bowl of their award winning NE Clam Chowder. It was definitely the best clam chowder I've ever had. So creamy and rich and flavorful. I'm still thinking about it. My husband was looking for a raw near us and happened to come across this raw bar . A couple walks in after us & quickly where seated outside & it definitely wasn't a 45 minute wait for them ... but we order three margaritas & the waitress ( shes heavy & has blond hair ) brings us over three waters. I literally sipped my water & looked down & there was a fly in my water. how disgusting & yes i sipped out of it ugh but anyways so I get up to bring the water over & tell the same guy who seated us there's a fly in my water he doesn't even look at me & basically chuckles & says oh sorry. Overall a great find and worth the drive all the way to Bridgeport! Only thing thats probably a bit sub par is the service.
