Drove from Monterey today. Had 7:45 pm reservations through open table. Arrive to find the restaurant closed due to some pandering to the illegal aliens that must work here. They had my phone number on the reservation. Why they couldn't have placed a courtesy call to the people who had reservations is beyond me. Very poor effort on their part. read more

We had four different entrees: tasty crab egg dish, perfect scramble with smoked salmon, well prepared liver with bacon, mashed potatoes and onions and robust seared scallops with fresh vegetables. I have been in Cal for about two weeks mostly Marin Co. I have asked several people at different times, where can you get a good steak ? Repeatedly I was told "Buckeye Roadhouse". Tonight I went with all the recommendations to Buckeye Roadhouse. I was impressed on how crowded it was, the bar was packed two deep. I was in the middle of a contract but I wanted a steak, with that said I sat at the bar and ordered the Grilled Ribeye. Sometime went by and the viola my steak arrived or at least the plate did, with a plastic ramekin of some kind of brown sauce, three 1/2 creamer potato with something piped on top of it with some McCormick Bacon Bits, and then there was the grilled Rib Eye for $34.00. First off I have seen bigger cuts of steak on "Denny's" commercials then what I had in front of me. The sauce was confusing, I think it was trying to be a bordelaise sauce, but reminded me of HP Brown Sauce, cold ! The potato also cold. When I got into the middle of the steak something made me look at the other side.The other side of the steak was not even seared, but then again how could it be seared med rare being so thin,impossible. Absolutely not worth the wait and not the money. If you ever see me there again, please check my neck for bolts, because I would have to have bolts coming out of my head to go back. read more

This place holds together a gorgeous old school Marin county vibe. They have a good selection of cocktails that were all made well. The main dining room is very elegant and we were lucky to be seated next to the fireplace. It really made for a nice meal. In regards to the food though, I think they can use an upgrade. Everything started well with the appetizers. We liked the artichoke and the calamari. But everything got pretty bad for the main dishes. The scallops were incredibly fish with a extremely under-salted risotto. The salmon scramble had pieces of shells in it ... not great. They did make a nice Irish coffee at the end of the meal though, so at least it all ended on a positive note. Maybe come for appetizers and a drink and skip the main dishes? We, party of 5, went to Buckeye for Sunday Brunch before going to Muir Woods. The experience from the Valet parking to the Valet parking was fantastic all the way, We enjoyed five different plates and all were per report great. I had the Huevos Rancheros and felt like I had made the best decision (others had other ideas :) ) The portions were large for the price and the seasoning just right. A little heat in the salsa, but balanced with flavor. If mine had a weak spot it was the pastillo chile which quite frankly wasn't necessary adding only the touch of a deep fried green chile and queso, not too hot, not too anything . . . I did taste the pulled pork and found it quite tasty though my son in law would have liked a bit more kick (daughter and son in law are spicy food fans) I didn't taste anything elese but did get favorable comments on the turkey burger, chicken and waffles and eggs benedict. We almost passed on dessert then saw one come out so it was track down the waiter and get some dessert menus. The coffee was flavorful with a very rich nose just the thing to get me ready for the divine Baked Lemon Pudding - a cakelike affair with lemon and huckleberry sauces excellent and worth the drive. The service could not have been nicer, it was our call on no desserts until we recognized the error of our ways. I would return in a heartbeat. Of the three meals out that we enjoyed this weekend, Buckeye was by far the best in quality and price for value. read more

Sadly the Buckeye has fallen from Grace. Having patronized it from its earliest days, it is a shadow of its former self in terms of quality and service. Covid absolutely cuts all of our long-standing favorite restaurants a lot of slack. It has to - so many have been heroic and 'there for us' throughout this protracted super challenging passage. But the end is in sight and the approach of or return to our new normal has been coming for weeks, such that Covid challenges no longer can let the Buckeye off the hook. The Caesar dressing was gloppy and off; the salmon drowned on its sauce bed; even its standby coconut cream pie lacked any luster. Our server, who told us she'd been there almost as long as we've been a customer - 16 years - was much more battle axe Sargent Major than server, more or less barking orders and throwing the food at us. Felt like we were on an assembly line - our job was to eat - not in a restaurant, there to enjoy. The Buckeye is part of a vivacious restaurant group with other strong offerings (eg Bungalow 44 was outrageously great a month ago) but it presented last night as the neglected child who's woefully lost its way. read more

It had been years since we went to the Buckeye Roadhouse. Now that our children are old enough. I have been saying we should go back for quite some time. We finally did and have been back more then once since. We even tried ordering a take out dinner including dessert. All have been wonderful. If you have never been? Your in for a new favorite restaurant to partake of on a regular bases. The interior is Elegant Lodge/Old World English/German. We enjoy the atmosphere very much. The wait staff was wonderful, knowledgeable and very efficient. The food is upscale comfort American. The desserts are delicious! Since going back we have been on our own, as part of a large group of 14 people and ordered a takeaway dinner as I previously mentioned. All the food was wonderful. My children especially loved their mashed potatoes! We tried the Marin Manhattan cocktail, it was delicious! We started with the Crispy Calamari and shrimp, we all enjoyed that. My husband had the Organic Butter Lettuce salad and I had the Caesar salad both are deliciously fresh and crisp! I went for the pot pie to share which my daughter that was a mistake. Warning if your looking for a nice gravy filled pie with a flaky crust this pot pie will disappoint you too. I except full responsibility for ordering the pie. The description was not your traditional chicken pot pie with a flaky crust description so, my fault. It's a Very dry pot pie with mushrooms, Pearl onions, fennel, bacon and fresh herbs. The crust was a top crust only that was so hard and dark that it came off in one big hard shell, it frankly looked shellacked. I like every ingredient in the pie's description so I ordered it for us to try. Well you have been told now it's up to you if you want to chance ordering it to, for $24.50 I would have enjoyed some gravy and a much better crust. Especially considering they are known for their comfort food. But heads up if that's the pie you are looking for. No worries though we shared the children's plate of fried chicken, green beans & mashed potatoes. My children even said they were as good as Mommies mashed potatoes. My husband had the baby back ribs and loved them. We tried the Roadhouse cheese burger on our next visit. It was a good burger and the french fries are delicious! We tried the Parmesan truffle fries also. We would have preferred just the Parmesan with out the resent trend of Truffle oil on so many things. If you like truffle oil you'll love them. The kids had the children's friend chicken again, just as delicious, it's good to see that they are consistent. We tried three of the desserts to date. All were lovely. We've had the chocolate mouse yummy, everyone's favorite! Then the S'more pie very good. And lastly we tried the baked lemon pudding yum. We are going back for the chocolate mouse. This restaurant is a throwback to the days when restaurants were classy, have a huge fireplace, beautiful ambiance and above all, excellent food. I had the scallops with Saffron Risotto, peas, chorizo and Nardello pepper relish. My husband had the 12 ounce brandy ribeye steak with bacon Point Reyes Blue Cheese mint baked potatoes and garlic herbed butter. Both were amazing but I think I'll give the edge to the ribeye. My Saffron Risotto was outstanding and delicious. The scallops were perfectly tender with a nice sear and crust that I love. The blue cheese potatoes were excellent and both dinners came with that traditional San Francisco sourdough crusty bread. I had a glass of Pinot Grigio that was excellent with my scallops. We topped all of that off with s'mores pie. Oh my heaven! This pie!! I thought it might be cloyingly sweet but my husband wanted it so we order it and it was not what I expected in a good way. This pie is so light and airy, topped with a toasted marshmallow meringue, flecks of chocolate and a delicious graham cracker crust that was absolutely wonderful. I tried to get every crumb of that crust because it was just so good. This dessert is a must if you go here. Tyler Florence from Food Network listed it as his favorite chocolate dish on Best Thing I Ever Ate and it does not disappoint! This dessert alone made me want to go back. I will definitely return here when we go back to the Bay Area. The food is excellent, the dessert was amazing and the atmosphere is romantic and classy. I LOVED this place. The Buckeye Roadhouse will go on my list of top restaurants to go back to. I highly recommend it. read more

By our measure, there is no better dinner restaurant in Marin. The menu is always excellent and seasonal changes keep it fun and interesting. There are staples on the menu that stay year round like the Smoked Chicken Wings. You must order the smoked chicken wings! No, seriously, the Smokey Chicken Wings appetizer! The food is always competition chef good. Their bar is also a fun spot to watch a game while having a beer and your meal. Their bartenders are craftsmen and their Cucumber Mojito is delicious The main dining area is casual/dressy. Be sure to make RESERVATIONS! The upper level dining room can become quite loud because of the shape of the structure, so if you're having that intimate experience ask to be downstairs along the windows at the back.They offer a complimentary valet so your dinner party can begin immediately. We always tip the valet well. This is a terrific spot to take your parents or friends visiting from out of town, or just a great dinner date. read more

I've been to the Buckeye many times and it never fails to please. I don't think I've ever had a bad meal here. Some of my favorite dishes include their luscious, house-smoked chicken salad, their filet mignon steak medium-rare, and Brick Chicken, which is amazing. I also really, really love their Crab Cakes Benedict -- an addiction waiting to happen. Yummmmmm! Michael consistently orders their onion rings, skirt steak with truffle fies (oh, yum!), or beef brisket. The restaurant is beautiful, tucked into the mountain across from Sausalito. An old faithful, have been coming regularly here for 20+ years. While I mourned the elimination of prime rib Monday, the rest of the menu continue to delight. It is traditional/Californian cuisine, they know their go tos and stick to them. Calamari, oysters bingo, butter leaf salad, any of the steaks, brisket, or brick chicken are great and daily specials , especially fish specials are on point. read more

So I went to the Buckeye Roadhouse (BR from this point out) twice in 30 days. Once to celebrate my friends birthday and once for our annual New Year's Day brunch. Of course the food was fabulous. It always is. Nobody does it better than the BR! However the service both times was severely lacking. The first time I went was on Saturday, December 17. I had a reservation through open table and all went well getting seated. With the waitress that we had, it went straight downhill from there. She had such an attitude you would swear she was the customer and I was the worker. This was true yesterday also at our New Year's eve brunch that has become a tradition for my boyfriend and I. This time we had a male waiter and you could cut his attitude with a knife. I don't know why they come off like this. I've been here many times in the past too numerous to count and I've never been treated the way I've been treated the last two times. The waitress we had for my friends birthday was so rude that I felt bad I chose the BR for her birthday. We thought it would be festive and it was anything but. Yesterday at New Year's brunch, I had the same experience with someone completely different. Someone ought to tell the people who work there that they are serving the people who come for lunch, brunch, or dinner. They don't get to have an attitude just for working there. That's just not how it works. While I can't say I'll never go back, I'm in no rush. The city isn't too far away and is loaded with great restaurants. read more

Wonderful venue for a special occasion. Food is always fresh and well prepared. I also choose the daily fish and love how they season the seafood entrees. The swordfish was very fresh with zucchini noodles, colorful peppers, capers and a tangy red wine sauce. Our daughter enjoyed the fresh scallops which are also prepared to perfection. A great place to celebrate! Great selection of wines and specialty cocktails. All the desserts are exquisite and different. This is a great steakhouse. Went here a little while back with work colleagues for our quarterly lunch meeting. The drinks were excellent with a wide range of wines to choose from. The food was incredible and the service started out great then became so bad we just wanted to leave. We started with the grilled artichoke, very good, also the seared ahi. The Ahi was pretty good, just a bit small for the price. Our party of four had two petite filets, cooked perfectly. They came with scalloped potatoes which were so good. Also at the table was a Rib eye, which was also cooked perfectly and it will be ordered again. And the skirt steak. All were very good, any of those I would recommend. We finished with a lot of desserts. This is when the service went bad. It appeared our server knew some people at the adjacent table and we couldn't seem to get his attention after that. It took too long to order dessert and also get them. But-the sticky toffee cake, lemon pudding with huckleberry sauce and the som'more pie are definitely thumbs up. The beignets-meh. It is also a very noisy place, we just about had to yell across the table. Maybe downstairs is better for service and quiet. read more

Have really enjoyed the Buckeye in the past. The ambience remains impressive and warm. This last visit fell short in a few ways. Service was inconsistent and 3 or 4 errors happened. Nothing huge but e.g., I requested my pork chop with no glaze and it came glazed. We requested our salad be served without pancetta and it came with pancetta and without avocado. The order for our appetizer was missed and hence served a minute or two before our entrees were served. We didn't bother to send anything back though I believe that our server would have been more than happy to make such exchanges. Lastly, and the real reason for the 3 stars was the quality of the food. Heavy, a bit greasy and not the special food I have enjoyed in the past. The staff was friendly, helpful and busy. No complaints there. You will still enjoy the Buckeye, I think, if you keep your expectations in check, Today I revisited The Buckeye for brunch. The food was great and the service superlative! This was a last minute find the other night. We weren't sure we could get a table. The wait was a hour so we went into the bar and almost immediately found 2 seats at the bar. One of my favorite spots in Marin -- and probably in the Bay Area itself. The food is outstanding! I love the bar area for spontaneous gatherings and dates and the more formal dining room area for brunch and special occasions.
