Love the Buckeye, a heritage steakhouse in Marin, a great recommendation, been there many times. Tonight, not up to par. We had a party of 9. Got there early before our other friends. Had a very smart ass bartender, for pre drinks, he thought it appropriate to tell my girlfriend our drinks were 2x the price, and when she questioned how could it be that much? He thought it was a good idea to tell my girlfriend that the extra $25 on the drinks was what he expected as a tip. She said "really" and he said "this is the buckeye sweetheart!" I have a sense of humor, but he wouldn't dare say that to me. Our dinner was consistent. Very good as usual, our server was just ok. I've been to the Roadhouse many times during the last 15 years and always had a great meal, service, etc. Yesterday was even better. Our server, Lora, was outstanding. Super efficient, engaging, smart and funny. She was very attentive throughout the meal and made our lunch and time there even better. As for the meal itself, incredible. My friend had liver and onions and he said the liver was cooked exactly how he asked. I had scollops with risotto, which was also very good. We had oysters bingo as our appetizer, which was better than I remember. All and all a perfect place to spend a couple hours catching up and eating delicious food in a beautiful setting. read more

I went to this place with a friend, thinking that this restaurant has some connection with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Both of us are OSU Buckeyes, so we had to give this place a shot. It turns out, it has no connection with Ohio State , but it derives the name from the Buckeye trees in the compound. Nevertheless, Victorian style ambiance, great food, made our visit totally worth it. I ordered eggs benedict, ham in the dish was little salty to my taste but overall combination worked just right. Many dishes are good here, esp the oysters bingo and this place has a nice classic feel to it with the decor, plus service is generally good, but it seems we've had a spate of unexpected problems dining out this weekend that were not well handled by management; here we had our 2nd faux pas of the weekend. Imagine that you ordered the pork chop, medium. Imagine that it comes out well done, so you have to ask them to re-fire it. Now imagine that what comes out is now too rare and it has to go back again. Finally, 3rd time, it's properly cooked to order, but everyone else at the dining table has practically finished eating. Now imagine that the restaurant offers to comp nothing. It is absolutely the restaurant's fault that their kitchen could not cook pork chops properly. We were not being especially picky. Well done or rare are not "medium". In these situations, restaurants should pro-actively comp their customers. You failed, Buckeye. read more

Amazing. Great service, opted to have my salad course two with oysters bingo and the seared ahi tuna as apps, my demands were followed. My lamb shank was so tender I feel like the knife was for looks... The lemon rice had some toasted pistachios pine nuts and golden raisins... I felt like it went nowhere nice with the simple red wine reduction the lamb was braised with. Would recommend this place to anyone. Her salmon was on point as well. read more

This restaurant is not for seafood lover. I dont even know why people raving about oyster bingo. This is how people who do not like oyters eat oysters. I ordered scallops dish which came with sour sauce and spagetti squash which did not incorporate with scallops at all. My sister ordered salmon dish which came with chopped brussel sprouts mixed with bacon. Both dishes missing starch (rice or potatoes) so we needed to order mushed potato as a sinde dish. Seafood itself was fresh but chef needs to come up with better recipes for seafood dishes. I dont eat much of meat so I am not going back to that restaurant. read more

Sitting in Vallejo, watching the news about the closure of the Bay Bridge, I didn't think that it would effect me at all. I work in Fairfield and only go to the city on the rare occasion. Well, it did effect me. I was planning on meeting some out-of-town visitors in Sausalito for dinner. Well, due to the traffic nightmare, we decided to stay close to where they were staying, in Mill Valley. I went on YELP and looked for some ideas. After reading Georgia M.'s review of the Buckeye Roadhouse, it was a "no brainer." We were greeted at the parking lot by the valet attendant. They were very courteous and efficient. We met our group in the lobby and after a short wait were seated in the main dining room. Our server was very attentive and understanding that we weren't in a hurry and wanted to enjoy our time together. I ordered the ribs with Maple mashed sweet potatoes and coleslaw. The ribs were good and meaty, but the flavor was a little on the bland side. The sweet potatoes were an absolute delight and coleslaw was almost....almost.. as good as KFC, which happens to be my personal favorite. As a matter of fact, it's the first time that I actually finished my coleslaw. Honey Bunny noshed on the linguine with clams and sausage which he said was very good. He was disappointed because the sausage was about 1 tablespoon of chopped sausage sprinkled on top. The pictures we saw online showed sliced sausage, so it looks like the chef took artistic license with the recipe. We shared the pineapple-upside down cake with ice cream, and it was very yummy. What was really appreciated was that we were allowed to hang out at our table an hour after the restaurant closed so that we could catch up on memories with our friends. While slightly pricey, it was definitely worth it. read more

Twelve years ago or so, I spent a blurry Saturday afternoon here (with a party of about 10) celebrating the life of my Mother over a series of drinks and fantastic food. Everything we ate or drank was great, and the hospitality was fantastic. Ever since then, I avoided The Buckeye...even though I have lived right by it all of this time. I am sure my "Therapist" is going to tell me I associate the place with a very sad day. Well, obviously! I'm one step ahead of that costly session... Flash forward to Monday. A random, rainy Monday night where a random friend wanted to visit for a drink and have a good dinner at The Buckeye. Hmmmm. That would be Prime Rib night. With a Vodka Martini. And some Crab Cakes. Or maybe a Pork Chop dinner with some Green Mashed Potatoes. Or maybe ALL of those things? Yes. ALL of those things were ordered and then some. I don't know why the mashed potatoes were green, but they tasted great. And the service was fantastic as I had remembered so long ago. So you could say I "swallowed my fears" by gulping down a martini and some great food at this special place. A place I now vow to return sooner than 12 years from now! read more

I still love this place for its food and ambiance... BUT.. I have had too many disappointments regarding service that its time to pen a review. From the hostess, to the valet, this place could use some immediate staff training. My lady and I walk into this place about once a week, and are received with the same unintelligible stare from the hostess with a greeting of "can I help you with something?" Why yes, yes you can... How about asking us how we are doing, and if you can get us a table? It's an off putting greeting. We always sit in the bar, it's got the best vibe. We stopped sitting in the booths because the "gentleman" waiter was so condescending to us, being in our early thirties, but charming and fun with the old guard. Its the same song and dance every time, even though we always rack up a bill of 150-300 and tip %20. I can tell by the clientele that its an older crowd. That's great, but don't write off your younger patrons! I'm putting you on blast sir. You single handedly take the quality of your establishment down. Seriously hope you read this. We went for brunch today and sat at the bar instead of the booths to avoid the same waiter. The bartender was flustered and not very attentive. We order two rounds of cocktails and were shocked at how little booze was being poured. Meager bloody Mary's and orange juice with a splash of fizz for the mimosa. We decided to order a bottle of champagne to avoid the lackluster cocktails. 98 la grande dame took 20 minutes just to find, but was delicious and priced fairly. We LOVED OUR FOOD, and left satisfied. So far a star removed for awkward hostess and poorly made cocktails/bar service. The third star removed for the a holes at valet. Pouring down rain and waiting while the group in front of us is chatting with the valet, more concerned about marin tsunamis?? than getting in their damn car where it's warm and dry. The next valet comes up, and takes the ticket of the affluent looking woman who is standing in line behind us first! Wtf? I just dropped 4 bills on brunch for two and was treated quite poorly from start to finish. Time for a change. The next generation won't be supporting this place unless their is a change in customer service. read more

So what do you do when you're hungry after a day of driving around Marin, and are getting tired of the frou-frou, the chic, the cutesy-kitsch? You go to the Buckeye Roadhouse. So what do you do when you find out that the Roadhouse, completely contrary to it's name, is NOT a bastion of maniless with short-tempered short-order cooks, overweight waitresses, and cheap bottled beer, but rather a finely appointed restaurant with a menu put together by a proper chef? You pretend to be surprised. Then, to your actual surprise, you order a salad. And much to your continued surprise, you like it. A lot. I forget what my companions ordered; they were covetous of my selection anyway. Which is not to say they didn't each clean their plates. The House Smoked Chicken salad reminded how good a salad can be. I need to get back someday to try out a few more selections. I never had reason to expect so much from a roadhouse! read more

If I could give no stars, I would! I have never wanted to like a place more then the Buckeye. I just can't find a way. I was in the mood for a burger and went in by myself to eat at the bar. They were very busy so I didn't really expect great service. What I didn't expect was terrible service! I started with a cocktail. I ordered a scotch, easy ice. The pour was average at best. I then decided to order one more cocktail and an appetizer, the artichoke which was actually very good. After the app I ordered my burger and decided to switch to a glass of wine. So far, things were fine except both bartenders were focused on and talking to just one guest and I had to wave them down each time I wanted anything. My biggest issue was when the bill came. I was charged for an extra cocktail and I was charge extra for a neat cocktail. I mean really, if you want to pour a good drink do it. If not, don't. I come from Chicago and New York where they take pride in pouring a decent drink. I then alerted one of the bartenders that I was charged for an extra drink and was told my math was off. I explained that I had two drinks and one glass of wine and she told me that I was wrong. She said she poured me on and the other guy poured me two. She shouted to the other bartender and asked if he poured me two drinks and he without even thinking about it said yes. She then looked at me said so you just want to pay for two drinks? I felt like she was treating me like I was trying to get away with something. Bottom line, $85 for a burger, artichoke, two drinks and a glass of wine. Oh yes, an extra cocktail that I didn't get and horrible service. Like I said, I want to like this place. It's cute and give me a feeling of stepping into my past. San Francisco google mappers beware! Sometimes google maps will tell you to take highway 1 all the way to the coast to get to the restaurant. This is not right. If you're coming from SF, Buckeye is right off 101. On to the review: My friend said it best while we were there. "This place is a cross between Buck's in Woodside and MacArthur Park." It had that venture capital big timer clientele with great american food. Other than the food, the waiter was the best part. He was a true professional. Couple jokes here and there and left us alone for the most part. Well played, waiter-guy. Started with Oysters Bingo. I said BINGO because they were cooked. (Not much of an oyster guy, but these were right up my alley). Brisket for dinner. Good stuff. Had a couple ribs also. Good times. Dessert was S'mores pie. Thought I had died and gone to heaven. ALL WERE GREAT Chicken though good was least Favorite. OYSTERS WERE AMAZING! Bread was great too. We were also graciously moved to a larger table when our waitress saw we were squished in one too small. Loved the ambiance in the main dining room making our occasion special. We stayed in Mill Valley to do some cycling in Marin and we were so happy that Buckeye Roadhouse was open for carryout for Valentines Day 2021 during the time of the COVID. They hooked us up with a fantastic dinner for two with a giant grilled sirloin done just perfectly (not easy for carryout), twice baked little potatoes and grilled artichoke. The great Vday finish were two dark chocolate mousse with fresh whipped cream for a topping. We were staying in a nearby hotel and had the greatest Valentine's Day ever. Another weekend approaches and my stomach gurgles and calls for the Buckeye Roadhouse . . . a great hide-a-way for a Sunday afternoon brunch . . . while I shower myself in bubbly and secretly catch up on sports at the bar. Nothing beats the scenic drive to the Roadhouse other than the food, drinks and patrons. Just last week I overheard a 60-something year old poshy Marin grandma yell out "CRAZY BITCH!" I proceeded to take the fist-fight outdoors . . . but you see . . . being an upscale "ROADHOUSE" . . . no fist-a-cuffing allowed. Valet parking good. Fighting bad. Food is outstanding & always great. Last month a good friend & I dined at the Buckeye to celebrate our birthdays. We both had been here many times before & loved it. I had never had the Oysters Bingo. My friend said we should try them. We did & then ate our meal. I had brisket & she had fish. But I couldn't get to the restroom fast enough to throw up my entire meal. A short time later I threw up 3 more times in a parking lot! And a short time after that debacle my friend became ill. The only food we ate in common was the Oysters Bingo! Upon calling the restaurant to let them know, the manager wasn't very understanding. This was shocking! And I will never go back because of this utter disregard for our health & well being. read more

I took Mrs. Ubermick here for her birthday, based on recommendations from some family folk, and since I personally believe that a good meal involves the use of vegetables only as a garnish, it didn't take a lot of convincing. The joint was jumpin', as it usually is on a Friday night. Complimentary valet service is a very nice touch, although soured a little by hoity-toity Mill Valley types pulling in with their Land Rovers and other luxury SUVs and not understanding how the whole "there's a line, buddy" system works. But hardly the fault of the restaurant. Service in there was excellent. Bar was cramped but even at the height of the dinner crowd waiting for tables, our barman had us our tasty beverages in a snap, along with a plate of calamari we ordered to snack on. Drinks were small and pricey tho. And the calamari was... ok. Dinner itself - again, the service was great, with our waitress being friendly, helpful, and speedy (and cute too... sigh. That almost earned me a night on the couch!). Again tho, the food was so-so. For the most part, I'm just a dumb Mick - but I know meat, and this meat was okay. The four of us at dinner each ordered something different - two types of steak, one salmon, and one lamb. It was presented nicely, as you'd expect from a high-end steakhouse, and in surprisingly big portions. Don't get me wrong - everything was good, but that was it... good. Not great. Not excellent. Just... good. Dessert followed - I had a chocolate bread pudding that was again, good. Maybe I went in there expecting a little too much, but when the bill came I think we all agreed that we expected more. Not in terms of the service, or the ambiance (or certainly not quantity!) but quality. When you pay premium steakhouse prices, you expect premium steak, and that just wasn't there. Happened up on Buckeye Roadhouse after trekking around Muir Woods all afternoon & ended up being too blonde to find the sandwich places we had mapped out.....even the Garmin couldn't help us locate So frustrated, low blood sugar, & in desperate need of drinkypoos & snacks, we see Buckeye as we're hittin the 101 & quickly veer off to see what they had to offer Waiters were in the middle of a shift change but both were nice as could be - knowledgeable about all the menu items & attentive w/out being too much so Ordered a smattering of Appies so we could save our "real" appetites for dinner reservations that night The girls shared Onion Rings ( declared outstanding ); Chicken Wings ( declared yummy ); Soup of the Day ( Declared delish ) I opted for the Polenta & Portabella Mushroom appie & it was out-of-this world-good. Cheesy, Creamy but molded Polenta held the perfect size shroom & paired w/ some baby-leafy-greens & it was the perfect sized portion to ward off the hungries The girls also couldn't help but order the S'Mores Pie - this place is renowned for it & peeps don't lie - there were an awful lot of moans & sighs to be had ( I did not partake as S'Mores are made w/ Marshmallows & being veggie, they're on my naughty list - alas! I subbed mushrooms and squash for the polenta fries, trying to avoid oil, and the vegetables were seemingly deep fried! My plate was covered in a slick of oil! Gross. Buckeye, you let me down tonight :(. We've been coming here on xmas eve for 5 years now, and after tonight we are ready to switch it up. I made the mistake of waiting to make our reservations on 11/01 for xmas eve and now I know that was too late. The only seating they had for our party was 8:45 which would have been cool but they sat us at 9:35 and then proceeded to rush us through everything. I guess I expect a better level of service from the buckeye on xmas eve but something was off. I'm guessing the waiters drew straws for who had to stay late, and it was us who got the short end of the stick. Long story short, the service was absent, and the food was bland. Two bites into our meal we were asked if we knew what we wanted for dessert. I get being in a hurry, but then why seat us so late or take a party of 8 for an 8:45 reservation? Final straw was the $35 corkage fee. Seriously??? After coming home and looking at the menu the corkage fee is $25 (IMHO still high), and it's $35 for a magnum. Either we got a new guy or a greedy one (I'm betting on the latter), but this was definitely a mistake. Our server never came to thank us, and yes we were the last table in there but they didn't have to start ripping things off the table. The staff made it very clear they wanted us out of there by banging plates around. There was also some weird menu substitutions we were not made aware of. For example, my cousin's meal came with au gratin potatoes and rather than tell her they were our they just substituted mashed. Like, not a big deal but not cool from a service standpoint either. All in all we probably won't be back. Living in the East Bay and working in the city has spoiled me for decent service and reasonable prices. I've had better service at a Denny's. First, the server reached his arm across my mother to fill her coffee and I was thinking, "Bad form buddy." Second, in front of my face to take away my salad plate, oh, and I forgot he took our salad forks away before we had anything but bread on the table so we ate our salads with our dinner forks. Third, when my dad went to pay the waiter did it again reaching infront of my mom to give my dad the bill. I was ten minutes late to the table and was not offered water. Not too long ago I had to leave this chicks house in Mill Valley in a hurry. Something about her husband was on his way home. Anyway I thought while close to SF I would stop in the city to do a little business. All that adrenaline that had been pumping so hard made me me hungry. Speeding down the road I saw Buckeye Roadhouse and they happened top be open for brunch. So a stop for brunch it was. I had a very filling meal and a bloody or four. These could be the best Bloody Mary's I have ever had. Called the Smoke & Fire, they were made with house smoked tomato's and jalapeno vodka. Lets just say they went down a little too easy. Thought I might drive off the side of the Golden Gate Bridge on my way into the city. Um, wait I mean I thought the taxi driver might. The food, The smoked salmon scrambled eegs with delfina potatoes, capers, dill and creme fraiche was good. I am a bad person to review breakfast dishes because they always seem easy to make and not too hard to fuck up. So maybe good was a bad word to describe the dish. I don't know what else to say other than I would eat it again. So there. I also had the pan roasted artichoke with creamy tarragon dip. Fucking delicious is all that needs to be said. I loved the whole Buckeye Roadhouse experience and would go back any time. For this review I needed to go to the on line menu to remember all of what I had other than the Bloody Mary's. The Buckeye has to be one of my favorite classic restaurants in the Bay Area. This time-honored restaurant is distinguished. Most restaurants of this caliber are obsolete, which should justify their 2 week in advance reservation suggestion, if not longer. I highly advise arriving early to experience the bar, which displays a memorable history of Marin. It is cozy, warm and you may just spot Robin Williams or Sean Penn sipping martinis in a dark corner (as I have). A must is their lemon drop martini .. which even the most manly of men are found partaking in. The main dining room is warm and displays a romantic air. Try landing a table by the fireplace. Everything you order will be remarkable, as will the service. Their menu is simple, yet elegant. Fresh, yet vintage in selection. And their wine list will perfect every entree choice. I am the foodie who loves to order a cheese plate in replacement of a sweet dessert, but my fellow diners have loved their selection. I have celebrated many special moments inside the Buckeye, which only made each evening even better. read more
