We stayed in the Kennebunkport area for a few days and the Bull n' Claw became our go to place. The lobster was done perfectly and my husband's lobster roll was also great. Clam chowder - perfect. We also did the breakfast buffet. Good array of items to choose from. Back again for dinner that night. I had the soup and salad bar. Salad bar had wonderful choices. The corn chowder was good. left a review on google already but aren't able to respond to the restaurant's reply. We ordered a lobster trio, and all three of the lobsters had rotten and mushy Meat inside them. when we separated the tail from the body, a bunch of slimy mush fell right out of it, not meat. When we cracked open the claws and arms open there literally was no meat just white foam and mush that smelled rotten. it was the worst lobster experience we've ever had in the 30 years that we have been eating it. At the restaurant the Waitress told us that she was sorry and that the chef said the reason they were all mush was because they were in between dead and alive when he cooked them. We had to chuckle to ourselves seeing how every year we do a lobster bake with the family and steam over 100 lobsters. We've even cooked lobsters that had been dead from traveling out of water and not once have we seen a lobster look like this in any way. On the google review the restaurant owner replied and stated that "after investigating they found that the lobsters were soft shell as opposed to hard shell and should've been cooked for 10 mins but were cooked for 18 mins resulting in a mushy texture." in my experience cooking and eating lobster, when you overcook a lobster the texture becomes firmer or harder and a lot more chewy. Both their response to us in the restaurant and later in the reviews not only were two different answers but both were lies. This tells us that not only do they not know how to cook lobster, but they knowingly Served rotten lobsters to their customers, and lied about it trying to cover it up with excuses that blatantly don't make sense. If they had just been honest with us, we wouldn't be giving this atrocity the amount of attention we are. I'm interested in seeing the excuses they come up with in response to this review, let's see if it contradicts the last two excuses they gave. read more

Great experience mostly because of STACI. The food was very good and the restaurant was clean but the service was excellent. Our 4 year old wanted lobster but we knew he would not eat it. We ordered him kids fish and Staci told him she would make him special fried lobster. That did not quite do the trick. When it came he was upset at the way it was served. Staci then went back and made it up the same way you would serve a lobster. Bib, lobster fork, basket, etc. he was thrilled! Staci also recognized a unique hat I had an commented. (Very nice) As a Johnson & Wales grad and restaurant manager for 15 years, I know service is what defines a business. Been there a coupe of times previously..was very satisfied each time. My last visit was in Jan ,the fire in the middle of the restaurant is really nice on a cold evening. We were seated close to the fire ..nice and cosy.The salad bar and the soup selection were really good. Service was OK , not over bearing. The Delmonico steak was probably one of the best steaks I have had, ..the Prime Rib my friend had was not cooked as requested, way under cooked..the waitress took it back, however it came back and was still not cooked as requested, my friend tasted my steak and wanted no more prime Rib lol. Price was reasonable , the waitress did remove the prime rib from our bill, without being asked . I will definitely go back. read more

As circumstances would have it, we ate at the Bull and claw 3 times during our 10 day vacation. The specials board did not change from the beginning of the week to the end. The soup at the salad bar also never varied. Beef barley, chicken and rice, and some sort of tomato. The food was good, but I was kind of put off by the never changing specials board. The place needs a good cleaning. The chairs by the hostess stand were dirty and need a good cleaning or replacement. The ducks on top of the hanging lights were very dusty and cobwebby. How is this place still operating?!? My only guess is it is one of the few options in a vacation destination especially on a Monday. The decor was out of date. Xmas decorations still up as they couldn't be bothered to take them down and seemed dusty and dingy. Food was hardly mediocre. Drinks are far over priced. 9.00 for vodka cranberry that was so very weak. Our food took quite a bit of time and came out extremely sloppy and missing ingredients that were said to be on it and when asked for missing ingredients they were actually disgusting. The waitress even told us when she came back to the table (the very few times she did cause we had to get her attention) that they don't put the sauce on the shrimp anymore cause no one likes it. Glad I tried it before adding it to my already no so great mushy stuffed shrimp. Half the reason I got the plate cause the sauce sounded appealing and it was far from. But if that is the case maybe time to update your menus??? The green beans (veg of the day) weren't even trimmed. Sorry if I seem like snob but if I am spending nearly $30 on a plate the green beans can be trimmed properly instead of me having to prep them after they have been served. Waitress asked if I wanted gravy on my mashed which I think we're part fake and part real potatoes and never got the gravy. Had to flag down our waitress and ask for bread after 45 minutes which were garlic butter hamburger buns. And got oh shoot I can't function in this heat from our waitress(lucky us)!!!!! Which it was so hot we were sweating. The waitress never asked us if we wanted refills on our drinks and took her a good 20-25 minutes before she even greeted our table and considered a drink order after we demanded an ice water. We were dying of thirst after a hot day. Our kids asked to bring drinks in with them we said no this is a restaurant you don't do that. Had I know I would have let them. This is the first time in a very long time we left only 18% gratuity. We are extremely generous tippers and come from a long line of service industry employees and understand this is their lively hood. I am not going to lie we seriously struggled leaving that much. Not only was the food not great but the service seriously lacked as well. If the employees can't keep up in a fast paced environment time for a staff change. Hopefully the next person had a better experience but don't find it likely as the table behind us was have a lot of the same issues we were having. I probably driven past this place a few dozen times over the past thirty years or so, but I'd never eaten here until this past Saturday. I'm glad we tried it. While the interior décor does look a bit old, worn and dated, don't let that fool you. Our waitress was top notch and the food was delicious. I went for the baked Haddock with green beans and mashed potato with gravy, and my wife had the shrimp and steak combo. We split an apple-cranberry pie, made fresh by a local bakery. Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection! I think I emptied my plate in about fifteen minutes! The only real shortcoming was the price. It was just over $70.00, $83.oo with tip for just the two of us, so we couldn't do this too often, but I can't complain about the food quality or the staff! Great location, and easy to find, too! We have been traveling to Wells Maine for close to 25 years, in fact we can remember when the Bull N' Claw was a cafeteria style restaurant. Here is a true story that I would like to share. Two years ago my wife became sick while we were in Wells. She told me to go ahead and get my dinner while she rested .... so off I went hoping she could quiet her upset stomach. Robin asked where my wife was as she has known us a long time. I had my usual twin lobsters.... but Robin...while I was eating put together some light fare, rolls, potato and some broth. I paid for my dinner but was not charged for the little get well bag that helped my wife over a rough night. The compassion shown to me that evening is something My wife and I shall never forget. NO NO NO! Turn back! Dine here only if you lose a bet or want to disappoint someone. On a relatively slow night it took 15 minutes just to get seated in a restaurant that had plenty of tables. That should have been the first tipoff. The Hostess is not the manger and this establishment is sorely lacking organization or someone who gives a damn. Dirty silverware should have been another tipoff- see photo. So, after our order It took 50 minutes for our food to arrive! No exaggeration at all. A party that was seated immediately before us had received - and finished - their food and had their leftovers in boxes before anyone at our table received anything. As our hunger grew and our patience faded, both the server and hostess avoided our table completely - I suppose it was easier to ignore an uncomfortable situation than to offer us some appetizers or at least acknowledge the wait. We contemplated ordering Dominos delivery to our table. Only after I approached the Hostess to inquire about our 50-minute order did our food appear. But...after 50 minutes, we still had to wait another 15 minutes for the final plate - an order of pasta and vegetables! Seriously? 75 minutes for a plate of pasta and vegetables??? My med-well steak tips arrived barely cooked - see the photo. Total yuck! Didn't have another hour to send my food back so just went to the salad bar for the 3rd time. Aside from my sad experience, the rest of my party said food was ok. Last interesting part was as we sat finishing our meal and a server with a broom approached our table and asked a diner to move his feet so he could sweep under him! Can you say CLASSY!?!? This place strikes me as a local joint someone invested in long ago and then decided it was too much work. The waitress said there was only one person in the kitchen and did apologize, AFTER my husband and Father in law went up to find out what was going on. The place is in desperate need of upgrade: tacky and the interior looks sad, food was ok (oh btw, just a heads up, if you want to share the food, you'll be charged $3 for it), and service was ok. I was surprised too that the gratuity starts at 18% and not 10 or 15%. And to think that it was our first time to try it there too. If you're looking for a good atmosphere & great meal, you should turn around and drive over to The Steakhouse down the road. What a disappointing experience. The entire place looked out dated, our chairs were sticky & it was extremely loud with screaming kids (note, we had 4 children with us & they even complained). We had a large party of 10, the menu seemed promising but when it arrived at the table is where it went downhill. The kids portions were gross, so massive that at least 4 people could eat from it! Like, this is for my 3 yo who can barely finish anything more than a few forks full of food. What a waste of food & money for everyone! My husband & I shared the steak & shrimp, which was fine nothing special or impressive. My mother-in-law had the roasted turkey and could hardly get through it, it was a massive serving, the gravy was flavorless & mashed potatoes were very dry (and flavorless). Veggie of the day was carrots, which were over cooked & mushy. All of our seafood was over cooked as well. When we received our check they had automatically included tip, would have liked to decide that for ourselves but our waitress was nice so you can't really take the terrible food & outdated restaurant out on her!! Certainly will not be bringing our family back as there are plenty of other great restaurants in the Wells/Ogunquit area to visit. read more

Hate to do this but went to bull n' claw due to a half an hour wait across the street and we were hungry. We come into to bull n' claw and first off the hostess was nasty and clearly didn't want to be there. We were then seated and luckily had a lovely waitress who unfortunately had to be the one to deliver the disappointing meal to our table, not once , not twice, but three different times because a STEAKHOUSE did not know how to properly cook a STEAK (I ordered well done which you could pretty much burn and it's acceptable but they still managed to undercook it 3 times). I ordered lobster and steak dinner and the lobster wasn't too bad but as soon as I cut into the steak, this thing was plain medium rare and tasteless. Honestly what a disappointment I always like to give places that are sometimes under reviewed a chance if I'm hungry enough and in this case I wish we waited the 30mins to eat across the street! This is definitely a tourist trap of the worst kind. It looks really old school inside and just seems kind of dirty. I could get past that, but the service was also very disappointing. The server my husband and I had seemed not to care too much about doing a good job. The place wasn't very busy, but we waited a while for her to stop by our table and then waited awhile again for her to bring our drinks. When she took our food order she had to come back a few minutes later and ask us again what we ordered, even though we just got the scallop sandwich and clam sandwich. Shouldn't be too difficult, right? Even with all this, the service wasn't outright rude, so I wouldn't be as harsh, but when the food came, it was also subpar. Definitely nothing special, and after eating it, my husband and I both felt sick for a few hours. Certainly enough downsides to never try this place again.
