They put all of these stale items in one box.
    Ladi Da A.

I really do hate giving bad reviews, but sometimes you just need to let people know that a business is definitely NOT worth their time or money. With that said, BunBao is 100% blah. My first time visiting this food truck, so I had high hopes for it...and it left me HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED. I only ordered a couple of items. The food was stale as hell, HOT--but STALE. This is what I ordered... Pork Belly Baos - Yuck. There is no way in hell that these pork buns are fresh. The entire texture of the bun is hard and dry...like when you put leftover buns in the refrigerator and microwave them days later, and they're hard after 30 seconds out of the microwave because they're so old they've lost all of their moisture. The meat was dry and hard (see pic), but the FAT (pork belly) was mushy. Seriously, the texture of the bao was giving "garbage", and that's exactly where it went. Out of 2 pork buns, 1-1/2 went straight into the trash. More of it would have gone into the trash, but I tried giving some of it to my dogs and even they rejected it. You can get far better tasting pork buns from the frozen section at Costco. If you want pork buns from a food truck, I recommend The Chairman which never disappoints. Sesame Balls - Tiny balls, not like the ones you get at a normal restaurant. They were not much bigger than quail eggs. Again, stale as hell. They are so old and stale that they are gray, deflated, and hard. You know it's a good sesame ball when it's light and airy. These were the opposite of light and airy. They were half way to turning into rocks. I could barely chew the first bite, and that bite was so dry and hard I thought I was going to choke as it went down. I got 5 balls. I threw out 4-1/2 balls. No regrets. I would have tossed them if they cost 5K each. Those two items came out to over $20 (15% tip included). Definitely not worth it. What was also odd is that both items came in the same box. What if the two orders were for two different people? I definitely do not recommend this place. I read the other reviews and I don't know if the good reviews are from friends and family, because there ain't no way this place should get more than 1 or 2 stars. Otherwise, maybe they make it fresh once a week, freeze the cooked items that don't sell, and serve up the leftovers after a blast in the microwave the rest of the week. I mean, I know leftovers, and these taste like they're on day 3-5. Definitely over microwaved which is why they were hard like rocks within seconds. Ugh. And yes, I know my dim sum. I'm from SF and growing up we would get dim sum no less than once a week from a couple of places in Chinatown. Starting in my teens, I would drive down to various places in the Avenues, and the Peninsula. I've also ordered similar items from various food trucks. This is not a place I will get food from ever again.

    BunBao in Fremont

BunBao is located in the Ardenwood area of Fremont. I had passed by their Irvington location before, and I have seen their items available at Factory Tea Bar in Fremont. I had seen that they had taken over this spot in Ardenwood. I decided to try it out. They offer limited items if you walk up. The items would be frozen, and the payment options are PayPal and Venmo. The staff member who assisted me suggested that I visit the website and place an order there for food that will be cooked when ready for pickup. I placed my order for pick up the next day. I arrived a bit early (pickup time is 2:30-4:30 pm). My order was ready. The food was good and filling. I will need to explore their menu items.

Frozen baos from the Modesto farmer's market. The cutest gift box, char siu and signature baos.
    Frances V.

Was super excited to see new vendors at the Modesto farmers market. I'm a bay area transplant, so I grew up eating baos from San Francisco and crave them all the time. I knew they were going to be a popular item, so I got the girls up and made sure to get to the market early. Even then, there was a line and they sold out of a few things. We ended up with the char siu, signature baos and the cutest gift box (we got the last one!) All the baos come frozen and they provide you with multiple ways to prepare them. The signature baos were also on special, but 2 get 1 free, so I figured why not. The char siu is usually my go to when I'm out and about. These baos have a good amount of dough and the filling was lighter than in used to. I expected chunks of meat, but it seemed more shredded. Not something I've had before. The picture they use also shows chunks. The signature baos had like a meatball inside. The first bite, I got all dough because it looked like the meat had shrunk inside and I could shake it around. Once I got some meat, the flavor was light, but tasty. These baos are not saucy at all, but I really the scallions and the texture. The cutest gift box is adorable! It included a piggy, panda and chick. Both the piggy and chick were filled with cream custard and the panda was red bean. I warmed them up for the kids and made sure to have a taste. The cream custard was a light and delicious flavor. The red bean.... it was a thicker bean texture then I'm used to. You could see bits of bean inside, but it lacked that sweetness that I think of when I eat other red bean filled items. I would like to try them prepare each way they suggested, so that I can find the method that creates the best at home experience. I will be back to try other varieties, but really looking forward to the minced pork baos.

Would highly recommend their gift boxes -- very adorable and yummy! I specifically ordered from a Bunbao vendor at a farmers market in Oakland: * 3 char siu baos ($14) - The bao itself was amazing. The char siu wasn't bad but I've also never been a huge fan of char siu to begin with. * 3 baos in a gift box ($8) - These were very cute. The pig and duck both had custard filling, and the panda had a dark red bean paste as filling. All were delicious. Overall, I was very happy with the baos. It was a bit pricey for the size, but I will be going back to try their other baos!

    Vegetarian and bbq pork baos
    Mang Y.

Had an opportunity to try some baos with a catered lunch order. The bbq pork bao (not the Hong Kong style split top type) has a somewhat thick dough section on top but its bottom was relatively thin. The dough was fluffy but the char siu fillings was too finely chopped up, sweet tasting with very little texture or flavor contrast other than the sweetened pork bits. The leaf shaped vegetarian (bok choy? and shitake mushroom) bao provided better mouthfeel with slight bitterness in the vegetables although still mild tasting. Again, it had too much dough on top. These baos are pricey (they were 3 for $16.50 with our cater2me order) and probably not worth the cost as an entree.

I came here to satisfy the whim of a 3-year-old who wanted a cute animal bao. There was a pretty long line mid-afternoon on a Sunday at TreasureFest. Staff was really sweet to my daughter. The cartoon bao was ready right away, so at least there was no wait fo the food. They were out of the panda so we got the piggy one. * Cartoon Bao $6 - 3 stars Cute but pretty standard in terms of flavor. My 3-year-old liked it, that's what matters!

    Teriyaki Chicken
    Betsy C.

Tried this food truck at a fair, the vegetable baos were good, but the teriyaki chicken lacked a lot of flavor. Overall they weren't bad, but definitely too pricey for what I received.

    Gwyne P.

The teriyaki bun Bao: -best served warm! - felt a little mushy as I ate it, but the flavor was yummy! Not an overwhelming taste of teriyaki. The pork bun Bao: -my fave of the two! -the stuffing was perfectly cooked wrapped in a soft bun!

I've always heard about this place but never been interested enough to stop by to try it out. I was in the area on the way to a family members house and figured I'd pick some up for all of us to try. Might as well since it's in the area and I'll probably never have it again (unless it's amazing). I settled for the Tasting Bao Box that came with 9 flavors and a Cutest Gift Box for my sister in law. I decided on the Tasting Bao Box because it had a wide variety of flavors for everyone to try including Cheeseburger, Szechuan Crawfish Bao, etc. Sad to say the quality of the boas are not good whatsoever. The outside is not soft at all and the filling itself is super bland. I tried 5/9 baos and they all had that weird consistency and bland filling, that's a shame. I asked my sister in law how she liked hers and she said it was good, but by her tone of voice it was obvious she was just trying to be nice lol All in all I have to give it a 2/5. The price is insane for the quality of the food, you're paying more for the aesthetic of the bao rather than actual taste. If you want to give someone a cute gift box as a nice gesture I guess you can get that, but I wouldn't waste my money here again tbh. Would've been a 1/5 star but the cashier was super nice and helpful so the staff earned a star.

Baos, Chinese, Uyghur, and even vegetables and meat for delivery and pickup. Had a look at the site and theres a lot of interesting things so we'll definitely be back. Interested to try some of their Chinese and Halal dishes as well as more buns and deserts. We also like the ability to pick these up or have it delivered for free if you order a day before. We only tried the 9 pack Signature Pork Baos we found at their stand at the Irvington Farmers market. The baos come frozen and you have to re-steam, they are fairly expensive around $2 each but we were excited to try it. Re-steaming was easy and it tasted great, the bun itself was fluffy and soft. The meat ratio was very nice and the meat had a texture like it was hand-ground. A little bit of meat gelatin melts onto the inside of the bun making it soft and giving it that extra meat flavor. Really good bun and excited to try their other buns and food offerings in the future! On this batch the bottom was a little thin, nothing broke but it would be something I watch our for with the next order.

Frozen Bao at the Martinez Farmers Market
    Emily L.

I discovered BunBao at the Sunday morning Martinez Farmers Market. I had a craving for some dim sum for awhile now so I made a bee line for the booth once I spotted it! They were offering a couple variations of frozen bao you could make at home. I luckily have a bamboo steamer at home so I was set! I went with the chicken teriyaki bao and their most popular BBQ pork bao. While I am normally a chicken girl, my favorite was the BBQ pork bao! The slightly sweet bun went great with the pork filling. MMM. I feel bad I can't describe how good it was to you! So just go order some! See for yourself that I am right! haha. I don't think I would get the chicken teriyaki bao again though. There is a smokey flavor to the chicken that I was not expecting and I wouldn't say it tasted like teriyaki. The is purely a personal preference though. I did find a weird piece in one of the bao's though. Not sure if it was gristle or bone but didn't love finding it.

OVERALL: I first found BunBao at the Burlingame Farmer's Market. They sell bao boxes, as well as some other dishes. They offer so many fillings and you can cook them in various ways. Overall, great bao that are quick and easy to make at home. FOOD: I've had the signature pork box and their tasting box (9 baos, 9 different fillings). Signature pork is a tasty, savory pork filling (not to be confused with BBQ pork. They also have that though - Char Siu Pork). In the tasting box, spicy crawfish and cheeseburger were the most interesting ones. I also really liked their shrimp filling (it also has pork in it). These are fresh when you buy them (or when they get delivered to you). You can freeze them or keep them in the refrigerator for a few days. You can cook them in the microwave, steam them, or bake them. I tried baking and steaming and prefer steaming them. The bao is more fluffy that way. SERVICE: They deliver in the bay area, which is super convenient. The delivery driver was very nice. I have also talked to the owner who is very nice and helpful as well. Definitely recommend them to your friends to help grow their following!

Frozen BunBao from Hayward Farmers market!
    Mari B.

Highly recommend these Bun Bao! So perfectly fluffy and flavorful! My picky eater ate 2! Perfect for anytime. So easy to warm up and enjoy steamy hot at home. I had no idea they partake at my local Farmer's Market! I am glad to know they show love to Hayward's downtown neighborhood. They offer a variety of flavors and the Bun Bao come in a frozen pack of 4. So easy to warm up, they explained it to me and even have the website on the label for referencing. I tried the BBQ pork and Jalapeño and am very pleased with both flavors. Will definitely return to try other flavors.

We had two tastings, one upon signing the contract and a final one closer to the date where we were able to bring along family and a close friend. Throughout the planning process, they were very easy to communicate with and were highly responsive via email. It was super convenient having them coordinate the table design at their warehouse, including the linens, plateware, and glassware. While the design meeting isn't a "boutique" curated experience, their warehouse has plenty of options to choose from if you already have a general color palette and vibe in mind. On the wedding day, the staff was extremely attentive and brought us hand rolls before cocktail hour even started to ensure we actually got to eat. I also appreciated how open they were to our custom cocktails; I provided my own recipe and li hing powder for a pineapple li hing margarita, which they executed perfectly. However, the full-service, high-touch planning and day-of experience, from the tastings to the seamless coordination of all design elements, completely justified the price. Im in the market for a catering service for a party in a few months and heard this was the place to…read morego. So of course we had to try their food before committing to a contract. This business is located across the street from the union city bart station. There's a parking lot on site and street parking in front but not too much. Inside is clean and modern decor with a traditional mexican vibe, if that's possible. Next to the counter is a salsa bar with other forget me nots such as onions, jalapeños, radishes etc. I ordered a few tacos to get a feel for their strengths and weaknesses in their meats. If you know me, you know my philosophy on taquerias and taco trucks. You cant judge off of one item because you might miss out on their main focused dish. Anyway, I got a steak, al pastor, Chile verde and the 2 different shrimp variant tacos. All of them checked out, not a single weakness on the menu. The salsa was on the more bland side. If they bring some more heat or flavor, this place could be unstoppable. Especially for the area, because I haven't really found a spot I could put my name next to. All in all, this is an authentic mexican joint that can be enjoyed by all walks of life. The service was great, as well.. the staff was friendly and patient, answering all of our questions. I definitely recommend this place

Food, Service = 5 Another 5 star catering service delivery…read more What started as a repeat extremely satisfied customer order journeyed into uncertainty closed out with validation why Athena Grill Catering will always be one of my go to catering companies, especially for Greek, Mediterranean food. Went to their website to order catered buffet lunch for a board retreat happening the next day in Los Altos. As before site easy to navigate with a variety of options to tailor. The first clue that there might be issues was I wasn't able to see or select my ideal delivery time for later in the day. I thought they were already booked for the time. Then when I confirmed & paid for my order, the interface provided a message at bottom of my receipt that catering orders must be made 48 hours in advance. I did it the night before our retreat. (Made note to self to order 48 hours in advance in future) I was disappointed that the website did not clearly note must be made 48 hours in advance or message before I paid that I was ordering less than 48 hours. After making a decent size order for 9, I went in mode hoping to salvage this order. I sent email to restaurant and left a voicemail that night with intention to call in morning to ensure they can fulfill order or provide a refund if they cannot. I called in morning to leave another message in hopes they check messages before their Saturday opening time of 11am which would not allow enough time to cook & deliver. So while setting up for our retreat and searching for a plan B for lunch the hour before retreat starts at 9:30am, I discovered several missed calls. To my delight it was Lorena confirming that they can complete the order, to call back & that would need to pay $20 to deliverer (lunch delivery is complimentary during weekdays near to their restaurant). She left voicemail and text. When I called back, I thank her and Athena grill for coming through. Fast forward, food delivered in mobile hot boxes as expected on time by a couple, quietly arranged in the back of room, generous serving for 9, and very hot for traveling from Santa Clara to Los Altos. I confirmed with Lorena via text and expressed my gratitude who again was responsive. The food was enjoyed by all. We had salad (crisp w/dressing on side), grilled veggies (chunky cut that were firm not mushy), spanakopita (crisp phylo w/good size filling), vegetarian moussaka (would not miss the meat), rice (loose and more than enough for 9 of us), grilled skewered chicken (always moist), grilled salmon (first time and was good portion), and baklava (tasted home made). One of my colleagues asked if food was Halal, which I think they confirmed. Unsure if correct, so suggest contact restaurant directly. Brought leftovers for Hubby & Dad to enjoy. Made plans to eat at their restaurant so can enjoy other yummy dishes like their lamb. Thank you Lorena & Athena Grill Catering.
