Our visit was in April. I understand that they're now permanently closed so this review is pretty much pointless. Perhaps they closed because business was too slow. It was in a good location, but honestly the food was just okay. The server was very nice and tried to accommodate us as best she could, but the food took a long time to come out, wasn't very flavorful and wasn't worth taking home the leftovers. We noticed that the restaurant was not clean when walking in, and should have walked back out. The food was pretty good, but the service was terrible. When my dad stood up, he had stains on the back of his shirt, which we realized were from the booth. We went for Sunday dinner. The place has few people and the waitress was welcoming. Chicken sateys were delicious. Tom kha was not at par. In a bowl of Tom kha there were hardly any chicken. I said I wouldn't be back but 6 years have passed, I was visiting my parents, everyone wanted Thai food, and the place we were planning to go was closed. So I relented and agreed to give Bunn Thai another shot. I am so glad I did! Ate here today and ordered off the lunch menu. I ordered red curry with chicken (L9 on the menu). I received yellow curry instead. First the soup: visually it looked oily. However, that was an illusion. The soup was on the sweet side and it had a flavor I liked. The curry with chicken: perfectly cooked. Chicken was not dry and the veggies were not overcooked. It was a tad spicy for my taste. Ambiance was lacking. My table was next to an outdoor space heater with a Santa sign on it. There are many Thai food places to order from in the Five Cities area. We are lucky! (Chinese food... not so lucky). So we seemed to have ordered from each one and Bunn Thai Bistro was the last. The Pad See Ew and Pad Thai were both good. The vegetables were fresh and crisp. Both noodle dishesmaybe could have used a bit more sauce. The chicken satay was delicious, tender and moist. We will be ordering that again for sure! Another appetizer we tried were the money bags. I liked them but my family didn't eat them because of the vegetables inside. The orange chicken had good flavor but for the price this wasn't worth it. As you can see from my photo we were given maybe 10 pieces total. I love this place and I love the angels in the kitchen who make the most delicious food. Very healthy too/a lot of vegetables. Most thai restaurants do not have that many vegetables in their dishes. I'm so disappointed. I recently moved to the area and I've been craving Pad Thai for a week or so now. I had a bit of a rough day and decided I would take my doggie for a walk and pick up some Pad Thai because food makes me happy. I ordered the Pad Thai and Panang curry, both chicken. I walked home excited to dig in. And I'm so sad to say the Pad Thai is absolutely without flavor. I mean seriously lacking any at all. Completely disgusted by what we found after receiving a delivery from this place. Please see the attached photos regarding a delivery from Bunn Thai Bistro on Monday, May 29, 2023. My daughter opened the container while sitting next to me and multiple tangled hairs were attached to her food as she was about to take a bite. According to regulations by FDA Food Code, "Food Code reference: 2-402.11 The Food Code requires that food employees wear hair restraints that are designed and worn to effectively keep their hair from contacting exposed food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single-service or single-use articles. The purpose of this provision is both to prevent hair from contacting food and food-contact surfaces and to deter food employees from touching their hair." This was our first time here even though we are locals. I took cooking lessons in Thailand and the food at Bunn Thai Bistro is the best on the Central Coast. All the ingredients are fresh, the flavors are amazing and the service is great. The atmosphere is really nice and one of the waitresses is an artist and some of her works are displayed. Moved out of the area so haven't been in a few years but recently came back for a bite. It was okay. Picked up take out but the restaurant still looks very nice inside. The staff were also still friendly. The noodles were good but just a little blander than I prefer. The curry had good flavor but would have loved some more tofu and veggies with all the sauce. The fried rice however was not something I recommend. It was very bland and overcooked and it leaned way too hard on the (pretty sure) frozen peas and carrots in the dish. We got it with shrimp and they were good but there were only 5? For the $4 extra, I would have assumed at least 6 shrimp, especially because this is a very shareable item and you want to give even numbers of things that are being shared. This is the second time I've ordered Bunn Thai off door dash and it's hands down the best Thai food in SLO! They pack their food with care and it shows. The presentation of the fresh rolls have been consistently fresh, delicious and beautiful! My pad Thai came with a yummy spicy chili hot sauce on the side that was bomb. First, you should know, if you are expected spice-less Pad Thai, this is not the place for you. If you want some truly delicious, authentic Thai food that may push you out of your comfort zone, this is where you want to be. Pumpkin curry, Lychee Chicken curry, all delicious. The thing is, most people get uncomfortable when you suggest dishes like this. But you never know what you will like until you try. Yes, Bunn has the standard things one may expect from an American-Thai restaurant, like Thai Iced Tea and Pad Thai. And those are fantastic too, don't get me wrong. But the thing I really like about Bunn Thai is that you are getting authentic Thai food, so venturing out of the norm and ordering something you've never had before is actually, completely safe and something I highly recommend. Ingredients are fresh, and most of it is really quite healthy, packed with veggies and very little dairy. You can order as simple as some fried rice or as complex as you'd like. You can order spicy or mild. And they even have a spice guide on the menu (please pay attention to that). It's not their fault if you don't read the menu. This is authentic Thai with authentic Thai spice. If you tell them you like spicy, that is what you will get. If you can't handle it, don't blame them. All in all, this is my favorite Thai place in the area and I try to come at least once a month. My typical order consists of: Appetizers: Money Bags and Thom Kha Soup Entrees: Lychee Chicken Curry; Pad See Ew; Pumpkin Curry; and many more Dessert: Mango Sticky Rice Please give this place a chance. I ordered a cup of Tom kha, order of sticky rice, a Thai iced tea, and calamari to go. The Tom kha was delicious and the cup was a lot bigger than I expected so I'm glad I didn't get a bowl. When I got the sticky rice, it was rolled up tightly in foil which in not sure why, and it did NOT keep well. I tried so badly to tell myself it was okay but it was not good. Idk if it was because it wasn't cooked enough, or if it had been rolled up so tightly, or if it had just been sitting in the foil for a while, but the middle part of the portion of rice was dry and chewy and essentially inedible. I was trying to eat it with the plastic fork I was given, and after trying a couple of times, the fork ended up just breaking that's how hard it was to eat my rice. I couldn't even finish it because like I said, basically inedible. The Thai iced tea was wayyyy too sweet. It tasted like they just dumped sweetener in it. I was hoping that the sweetener was just at the bottom so I mixed it around, but no, I couldn't taste ANY of the drink it was pure sugar. The calamari was big (as opposed to smaller little circles) and it was good. I'd prefer it smaller though because it was more difficult to chew and swallow and not choke. Haha It came with Thai chili I believe but I eat mine with soy sauce and it didn't automatically come with it. From my experience, these may just be some flukes. But hopefully they see this and make some changes. I'd definitely consider coming back, but at this point, not in the near future. read more

On a trip to Pismo beach we were looking for something that was vegetarian friendly and this place came up. When we arrived the place we were the only customers so we were seated immediately. This place isn't very fancy walking in but we were looking for something casual to eat anyways. The menu was very heavy and had extensive list of Thai food to pick from. At first we had planned on sharing some items but we noticed on the menu they charge extra for splitting items so we decided to just pick off of each other's plates a bit. The menu seemed to have strange rules and extra charges for things like splitting items and take out boxes and we did our best to avoid them but we did need take out boxes at the end. We settled on ordering the yellow curry, pad see ew, and pad Thai all with tofu and vegetarian friendly. The sweet woman taking our order made sure to check if we were ok with egg and the sauces and stuff like that. I really felt like she cared about making sure our order was vegetarian friendly for us. The food came out pretty quick and was very fresh. We heard it being cooked to order and the delicious smell just filled the empty restaurant it was being cooked, that made us hungrier and more eager to try out the food. All of the items we ordered were so good but the winner of flavor out of the 3 items was definitely the pad see ew, then the yellow curry at close second, and pad Thai third. Overall it was a pretty tasty dinner and everyone enjoyed everything they ordered. It was good portions and very fresh. I think I might return here if I was in a trip to the area again. read more

Avoid like Seinfeld's "Soup Nazi". WE WERE UTTERLY HORRIFIED at the "NAZI-LIKE" Service by the Owner's Self-proclaimed Brother-in-law waiter from the inner bowels of hell! Despite THREE extended pleas / requests / and extended arguments with the waiter for a simple cup of hot WATER for my wife, and paying $45+ for the tab (plus a $10 tip), the Taliban-like rules did NOT allow you to get hot water unless you paid for Tea, even if you do NOT drink tea. ....but you can have two Ice-waters with lemon on the table(which was never refilled BTW). Despite all our multiple reasonable discussions with this guy, on why my Chinese wife, who had multiple cultural & dietary restrictions out of either religious or health concern's, he cut short all discussions with a curt dismissive, "I do not want to argue with you"....and stomped away. Hey, I can afford staying at the Ritz,a Rolex Watch, Gary Danko's... and he implied that we are trying to "steal" a cup of hot water? Are they afraid that we might sneak in our own teabag to make illicit tea? How insulting and absurd? How can hundreds of other restaurants, both great & small, have provided all those free cups of hot water to my wife, over the past decades, without hesitation? What if my wife need hot water to be able to mix some critical medication in....like Potassium powder for those on "Water pills"? To add insult to injury, an Onion ring was also found in wife's soup, despite making it clear it would be adverse to her...and was noted on the order. Huge mistake, especially since there was only 4 total customers in the place, at the time. Sunday is obviously a day of rest from any Civility for this guy. Despite me stating that the Pad Thai was horrible & too sweet & was uneaten, the Brother-in-law became "mute" and offered nothing in return. Other "LAWS" of this arrogant place include a $5 penalty for sharing a lunch special. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Brother-in-law's extra special service, included hearing him loudly BAD MOUTHING us & our requests in ranting mixed Thai & English, to the rest of the family, in the back of the store. Blah... Blah... Blah...Hot Water....blah.....blah...Hot Water.......blah....blah.... Hot Water.....etc...... I may not understand Thai....but I unfortunately know English. If you are going to bad mouth somebody, how about doing it so not everyone in the restaurant hears it, and saying it in a language that I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The so-called attention to dietary restrictions & special requests are not taken seriously. It also appears that very few items are organic (only Tofu?), the vast bulk of ingredients are not. The Chicken is free range, but that does not mean organic. So if you do not have either Tofu or Chicken, you have regular food? If I want true Organic dishes I will go to a place (e.g. Whole Foods) that has ALL ORGANIC ingredients. ~~~~~~~~~~ GLUTEN-free? Try NICENESS-free instead! ASIAN FUSION? Try ASIAN CONFUSION? ~~~~~~~ Even though I had first walked into this place impressed with both the reviews & the decor....I rapidly found that it had... Mostly HYPE and little substance. A closer review of the local multi- 5 STAR REVIEWS seem to be either filtered or suspect! The small overpriced portions of the meal that were edible, were standard curry based dishes and tasted about average. The Money Bags were just OK, but I far prefer the sweet potato ones at SLO's Thai Palace. The soup in the tiny ceramic bowl in a hollowed out over-hyped limp bread bowl was lame, but tasty, but maybe not worth $11 (unless you consider the shrimp which tasted like they were standard defrosted shrimp, like those found in a shrimp cocktail). The Thai Iced-Tea was inedibly too sweet for me(I wanted Thai Coffee, but they had none...say what?) The fancy colorful Asia Fusion menu was ridiculous stupidly complex and extensive for such a tiny place....and made you wonder about what was really available or even fresh. Soft Shelled Crab was another example of what they did not have. BTW- I know & have loved Thai food (both homemade & in many dozens of restaurants in several major cities including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, NYC, Honolulu, LA, SF, etc...) & had close Thai friends for many many years. In addition, I know how a small family run place should work because my Asian in-laws have an Asian restaurant in the Bay Area, and I help out with customer service, decor, and other matters. My in-laws would never treat people like this. Anyway & in conclusion..... It was the absolute worst arrogant rude insulting restaurant experience, in over two decades. I paid in cash & had no doggy bag, for obvious reasons. I request that the owner apologize for his In-laws behavior. We should have went to Thai Deva down the street.... where you have nice friendly Non-Hype Non-Taliban service! .....oh, and I DARE YOU to ask for a CUP OF HOT WATER for FREE if you go here! read more

This restaurant has cozy traditional ambience with soft music. The prices are a bit higher than most Thai restaurants ($10-$15 for most items) but you pay for a higher quality of food. The chicken is free range and hormone free and the food is not overly oily. All of the veggies are fresh and cooked well. The one thing I dislike is that there is a $5 charge for sharing. The owner discouraged my bf and I from sharing by saying that the portions are single servings. However, we split a pot of soup and an entree and were perfectly satisfied. I think Thai meals are better shared with the table so I really dislike the surcharge practice at this restaurant. Overall, A solid Thai place to come if you are hungry.
