Four of us had lunch today. I expected good things as Burmese cuisine is very good. I was sorely disappointed. Garlic noodles with shrimp had no flavour apart from when you bit into garlic. Yes the name was appropriate but I have had the same elsewhere and really enjoyed it. The other dishes were equally disappointing according to my friends - I didn't taste it. What do you hope for at a restaurant during Covid? Cleanliness. The tables are outside and sort of in the street (the street is blocked off). Before you sit, the table and chairs were wiped down. You may still want to have some wet wipes, but no worries if you don't. If you need to use the restroom, they will take your temperature first and then only let one customer back at a time. What I liked was they had QR code's for both the menu and the check, so you could reduce contact and do it all on your phone. As for the food, I originally planned to get the samosa salad, but changed at the recommendation of the server to get the tea leaf salad. I think he recommends this to everyone. There is an option to get cabbage, romaine, or half and half as the base. I got half and half, and liked the texture. The tea leaf itself is half way to becoming a paste, but it's nice and a little tangy. The blend of flavors and textures go well together except for the crunchy topping. I chose the vegetarian topping (not a fan of dried shrimp), and the dried lentils were yummy but also could definitely take out a filling if that's something you're nervous about. Not saying don't get the lentils, just chew carefully if you're worried about your teeth. I went here for dinner last night after walking around and pondering where to eat. I had not been here since they opened. This place is excellent from the beginning to the end. Just the same as its parent restaurant Rangoon Ruby which is located nearby. After looking at the very lengthy menu, I ordered the BBQ Pork Garlic Noodle. Excellent and very reasonable. Besides ordering the food, I also tried their premium spring water. Well, actually, it is Voss water. I had not had it before. It tasted wonderful. I've been to Rangoon Ruby and LOVED IT. So I gave Burma Ruby a try. Both times was a huge miss. The first time I was here for lunch, I placed an order over the phone and the girl who helped me was great. My credit card didn't go through but she said they can just charge me when I get there. I get there and the whole street is closed off due to covid for outdoor dining. I pick up my food with no issues. Great service. I was able to pick up my food in a timely manner. I get back to work and start eating my food. My coconut rice was dry and hard. Like they overcooked it and gave me the burnt rice on the bottom of the pot. I literally went there just for the coconut rice and I was not satisfied. The second time I went there, I was ordering lunch for the company. I was raving about how good the coconut rice was so a lot of my coworkers got it due to my recommendation. They open at 11 and we needed to pick it up at 11:45. We had like 12 orders. The guy on the phone said that he can do it. I got there at 11:50 and my order wasn't ready yet. My order didn't come out until 12:10. I was pretty annoyed. If he couldn't do it, he could've said he couldn't do it. I would've understood since we had such a big order in such little time. I would've given my company a heads up to push the lunch back. Now on to the food. I think everyone liked the food. One MAJOR problem...the rice wasn't cooked all the way. We ordered the jasmine rice, coconut rice. Both weren't fully cooked. They were still hard when you bit into it. It was not pleasant to eat. There was not much we can do about it. It was so embarrassing. I raved about this place just for it to let me down. I came here during happy hour after seeing the bright sign in front that said Best Happy Hour in the Bay! I came in and was impressed after hearing about the happy hour specials. They have a $5 AYCE special with the purchase of a drink. The AYCE included Steamed Edamame, Fried Pork Spare Ribs, Chicken Wings, Shu Mai, Pork Pot Stickers, Chicken Chow Mein, Fruit Platter and Tea Leaf Salad. It was a steal for $5! There were also good drink specials and I mainly had the $5 wine by the glass for happy hour. The food was very cheap and it was delicious! I tried everything on the AYCE menu and was impressed on how good it was. They also had a spicy chili sauce which made the food better with a spicy kick to it. I sat at the bar and the bartender Aimee was nice and made sure my water was filled and my wine glass never ran empty! 3.5 stars Delicious, fresh, spiced flavors are what you'll find in every dish at this chic, trendy Burmese restaurant. They have a happy hour until 7PM in which you can get as much as you want from the buffet line for just 5 dollars (and the price of a drink). Though the selection at the line was small, I piled up on the fresh tea leaf salad right before the happy hour ended, which was a total steal! The tea leaf salad here is a must and was definitely my favorite dish, but we also had the fragrant, pickled mango salad and the palata flat bread with chicken curry. The "monk hingar" or catfish chowder with rice noodles, egg, and yellow peas wasn't particularly special (and the portion was pretty small), and the shrimp curry was deeply flavorful and had a fair amount of spice! Overall, I was definitely happy with the food and experience here, though the dishes were a little bit pricey for the portion sizes. Came here for lunch with a few friends on a Friday. We were seated right away. The menu reminded me of Burma Burma in Dublin. We ordered the palata with veggie curry. Not sure why the one with veggie curry costs more than the one with chicken curry... it's usually the other way around. For my entree, I got the basil and chili beef with coconut rice. The food took really long to come out, we were waiting for at least 20 mins. The palata was good, but it's hard to mess up bread lol. My main dish was okay, basil chili beef is one of my go-to's at Burmese restaurants, but this one wasn't as great. Not as much flavor. I asked for spicy but it was not spicy at all. I put a lot of the hot sauce in (you have to ask for it). The hot sauce is good! Overall, this place was okay. I've definitely had better Burmese food around the bay. read more

But most important, the tea leaf salad is a must as the national dish and it is very good here, done just the way I like it and super fresh! The tiki drink menu also sets this place apart, if you are a consumer of alcoholic beverages you must try at least one! We got Umbrellas in ours how cute is that? Came here yesterday for dinner. First time trying Burmese food (not sure the dish I ordered is really Burmese of Thai). I got the coconut chicken curry with coconut rice (which almost tasted like a dessert, like mango sticky rice without mango maybe?). The waiting time was a bit long tbh and we were both hungry. Probably the best Burmese restaurant I have ate at in downtown Palo Alto. I have to say, this place is a winner when it comes to authentic food. I always recommend this restaurant even when I use to work at Nobu Hotel Epiphany! First time eating at Burma Ruby and absolutely fell in love with their Samosa Salad. I would say every thing on their menu is amazing and delicious! Each time I have gone, the experience have been different every time. Better to go during lunch since it is not as full. Dinner gets pretty packed and both locations in downtown Palo Alto have the same menu. I recommend the one on University since it is a lot nicer! Big points to the Samosa Salad, Mint Jalapeno Chicken, Chicken & Shrimp Biriyani, and Samosas are really good! There are a lot of choices to choose from when it comes to their menu! 3.5 stars. I was craving Burmese food, since this isn't something you can get easily in New York. I made a reservation easily for a group of 7 for a Saturday lunch. The restaurant was empty when we came in. The thing I wanted the most here was the mohinga after having it at Mandalay in SF. For appetizers we ordered the mohinga, palata, and tea leaf salad. The mohina isn't as good as the one I had at Mandalay, but it still satisfied my craving. This mohinga is bulked up with noodles, whereas the Mohinga at Mandalay is just soup. The palata is similar to roti except more dense and oily. It felt like tea leaf salad was just predominantly lettuce. For entrees, we ordered the beef kebat, shrimp curry, pumpkin chicken stew, and basil chili lamb. None of the entrees really stood out to me and were a little too close to the sweetness level of Thai food for my liking. I did like the large chunks of pumpkin in the pumpkin chicken stew and the chicken was quite tender. I think my least favorite was the beef kebat. I've only tried three Burmese restaurants, and so far this is my third favorite. I can't get Burmese food often, I'll take anything I can get. Make sure you don't leave here without ordering the mohinga. read more

And we squeezed in a late dinner for two on Sunday evening, wearing the grubbiest clothes possible...and were still treated like royalty. But my review has nothing to do with the service...it's the food that disappointed. We ordered the fry bread with lamb curry. The curry was COLD...frigid in the middle, luke warm on the surface. This was my first time having tea leaf salad, and it was underwhelming, at best. No textural contrast, just a mush of tobacco-like sludge. I did enjoy the coconut rice paired with the pumpkin and pork stew. That was pretty tasty, and held up to reheating the leftovers 2 days later. And while dining with my love, who is sensitive to heat, it appears requesting no spice also leaves most dishes UNDER seasoned and bland. Perhaps salt and pepper is considered spicy in Burmese cuisine? I'm hoping this was a mere fluke. But, I think I'll skip this place the next time I'm craving a delicious treat. read more

I came here for after work dinner with a friend. This Resturant is conveniently located down downtown University Avenue what's plenty of parking spaces available nearby. I came in during Tuesday dinner time and there were available open table spots. Love the modern atmosphere and they have very stylish drinks and I think a full bar too. I was not a huge fan of the food. I ordered a soup that had a samosa inside it is a great concept and makes a fun appetizer dish but personally the dishes offered did not have much flavor to me as a traditional Burmese Resturant would. More like a 3.5, Burmese food seems to be a common trend in the Bay Area, and I'm glad even in Downtown Palo Alto there are places to enjoy it without heading towards San Mateo or San Francisco. My friend and I split the following: - Tea Leaf Salad: This is a must have whenever ordering Burmese food... I've had better tea leaf salads, but this satisfied my craving. I think the balance between the fermented tea leaves, dried shrimp, and fresh veggies were a bit off, since the dried shrimp was definitely overpowering the dish. It had this strange fishiness to it that was overpowering. - Burmese Pork Curry: Pretty good - it's definitely not as thick as Thai or Indian curry, but the thin sauce allows for the pork and potatoes to soak up the juices. I just wish the pork didn't have so much fatty/inedible grizzle on it. Otherwise the pork meat was juicy and flavorful. - Coconut Rice: MUST GET... especially if you're getting the curry. Their coconut rice is good on its own and has a lot of flavor - you can really taste the coconut milk. The sweetness actually compliments the Burmese Pork Curry very well. For the portions and quality, I felt like the food here was very expensive... especially when the entrees like the pork curry didn't come with rice. At least give a scoop of rice and charge extra if you want coconut rice! Both Rangoon Ruby (just across the street) and Burma Ruby are owned by the same people, but by no means should you compare this to the ultimate Burmese restaurant in the Bay Area (Burma Superstar). The highlight was the nan gyi dok. The presentation was great. The server prepares it in front of you and explains each one of the ingredients before mixing it together. The dish itself was very delicious, especially for me since I really like coconut. The price point is a bit higher for these two dishes compared to the egg noodles but personally I found them to be way better and would definitely have ordered the nan gyi dok if I came back again. We got a bunch of things to share--most notably, the coconut rice, mango chicken, garlic noodles, tea leaf salad, and chicken kebat. Everything was delicious. The coconut rice was most hyped and didn't disappoint--it paired well with every dish. The salad was so flavorful and the mango chicken was fruity and savory. Loved it all. Very nice, classy restaurant. Almost everyone on the Bay area know about Burma Ruby, so I'm going to write this from a Vegetarian's perspective. They have a considerable menu for vegetarians and not just dishes with tofu, but with a eclectic mix of vegetables. We ordered garlic noodles and they replaced the egg noodles with rice noodles for us. It was good. Flavourful. The vegetable Curry was amazing. Mildly spiced. The tone was immediately set by the presence of a large bottles of VOSS water on every table. The hostess informed us at seating that the VOSS water was available for purchase--no indication or mention of price--but they would be happy to provide tap water if we preferred. We did. The hostess also indicated that at the end of the meal we could "flag down" a staff member to cash out with an "email or paper receipt", "because they're old-fashioned like that." They were, however, not old-fashioned enough to have printed menus, and there was no mention of the unlabeled QR code on the table--so not old-fashioned in a convenient way... The drinks (a little pricey) and appetizer samosas arrived promptly and were delicious. The main courses were delivered to our party of two about 5 minutes apart, with the first of the two delivered to the wrong seat and indicated as the wrong dish. While waiting for the second dish, we were asked if we "want a box" for the first plate. Jasmine rice was delivered instead of the coconut rice that was ordered. Despite the switcheroo, the main course was fine: medium to small portions for the price but with nice flavor. Overall, I was surprised to be charged for rice/noodles in additional to the $20+ per plate, but I guess it was consistent with the nickel-and-dime mood set by the bottled water at seating. read more

Like a Red Lobster or Outback Steakhouse of Burmese food, Burma Ruby is a great place for large parties, nice cocktails, but probably not for great food. The service and atmosphere is nice, they have ample seating (although it does seem like it does get busy around lunch and dinner time), and the food they serve is somewhat decent. Tea Leaf Salad - Okay, this is a decently solid dish, the ingredients are great, but the dressing may be a little too much, I'd ask them to go easy on the dressing; it's slightly too oily for what is supposed to be a refreshing salad and appetizer. Garlic Noodle with Pork - Where's the garlic? This does not taste like garlic noodles... there's also not a lot of pork... not sure what happened with this dish. Mint Jalapeno Pork - Not sure if the mint or jalapeno really comes out, it is a little spicy but it wasn't the main flavor of the dish, sugar and oil were probably a little higher on the list. The name sounds great, but that's all that's great about this dish. Overall, the food was pretty pricey for what I actually got. The service was decent and the decor is nice, but the tables are crammed to close to each other for this to actually be a really nice experience. This place feels a lot like a chain restaurant now where they are maximizing seating rather than developing a great culinary experience for its diners. And being a sister restaurant to Rangoon Ruby (Palo Alto, San Carlos, and SF), I think Rangoon Ruby's food tastes better while also having better decor. read more

Came here with the bf for Saturday dinner. It was busy but we were able to be seated right when we got there. FOOD The tea leaf salad was solid! Enough crunch, enough tea leaf muskiness, a good balance. It was enough for bf and me to share for appetizer. For entree I got the Moh Hingar, which I get every time I go to a Burmese place. I wish this one had more creamy undertones like Burma Superstar's. I'd say this one was solid. Not amazing, just good if I'm craving it. Forgot what bf ordered, but both of our entrees were relatively small portions compared to other restaurants. I guess that's the trend for bougie areas like University Ave tho. MOOD Really beautiful architecture inside tbh, even on the ceilings. I'd describe it as a modern Mediterranean jazz bar. Good place for a date although it can be kinda loud. We came here for lunch on Valentine's Day since the infamous Ramen Nagi's wait was 2+ hours. It was really busy since it was Valentine's Day weekend, so service was definitely slower and it looked like there were only 2 people working as server and host for a good amount of tables. We got the Burmese pad thai and pulled pork. The portions were large and we had leftovers. But the food was very underwhelming and just okay. There wasn't anything special or amazing about the dishes and the flavors. The pad thai I felt did not have enough flavor and the pork was a bit soggy. Here's why I'm giving it a 2/5: THE BIGGEST REASON: Service. The service was not ideal at all. We got dishes that we never asked or ordered for, and we only got the food we actually ordered after a bit of argumentation with the servers. In addition, IF YOU DO CHOOSE TO EAT HERE, here's a few things you need to look out for: - They ask you if you want to have sparkling water when you come in. DO NOT SAY YES, THEY CHARGE $9 FOR A SMALL BOTTLE OF SPARKLING WATER. It's a way they get you to put more money into their wallets. - They charged around $20 more than what our bill actually was. I don't know if this was just a simple mistake but something really shady seemed to be going on. We had to wait 15-ish extra minutes for them to reprocess our credit cards. Now, I'll review their food and ambiance. Their food was okay. Their pad thai was ok, and I can't really speak for their tea lead salad. The fried tofu was decent but it came in way too hot and almost burned our tongues off. The ambiance was okay, but the lighting was really bad and I'd like to actually be able to see the food I'm eating. If you want to find somewhere to eat in this area, there are a lot of good restaurants right by the corner of this one. I and my wife decided to try out this place on a Friday evening after the recent reopening and lifting of stay-at-home order. Around 7, there was only 1 table for 2 available by the roadside which we took. There were a total of 4 tables and 12 seats outside. One thing that we liked is that the menu is touch-free. We were supposed to get the menu by scanning a QR code from the table and order from there when the server came. We ordered a Basil chili white fish (Swai), Chicken Kebat and a side of Burmese Indian Rice. The food arrived relatively fast. We got a side of Brown Rice by mistake. The server offered us to keep it while he order another Burmese-Indian rice but we requested to send the back. By then we hadn't started eating, taken off our masks or touched the food. So he took it back and brought the Burmese-Indian rice. The food was really delicious - all the items. The Swai was fresh, soft and cooked to perfection spice level. The chicken was also excellent. The rice is just like Indian Pulao and a decent amount, given that it was a side dish. All the staff were wearing masks and gloves as expected. The dining experience was quite satisfying. read more

So we came for a little late, 8:30, dinner. We were a group of five, came for birthday dinner. We had a reservation so got our seats quickly. We took about 10 minutes to place our appetizer and drinks order. Server was quick enough to mention that they take last order by 9:15. Good enough. We were done placing final orders by 8:55, and our server asked if he should wait to bring the food while we are still working on appetizer. We requested to wait until we finish appetizers. That was all cool, until they did not bring our order for really long. 35 minutes later we had to find our server and remind him that we haven't gotten our food. And, then within 5 minutes, the food came, probably was already prepared for a while. Almost everyone had left from the restaurant. Official the restaurant closes at 10 so I would still expect good service until that time. This was terrible. Food was still decent. Service was annoying to the extent that our server kept reminding us that he needs to clear the table by 10. We still got done in 15-20 min, but if only he had brought our food timely, we would have enjoyed our dinner much more. One of the most pathetic service I have ever received in a relatively upscale restaurant. read more
