My favorites are definitely the Choux and Mochi Cakes! The texture/flavor of the cream in the choux are exactly what I look for - not too fatty and not too light. Some places would make their cream light like whipped cream, but some would be too pasty like it was thickened primarily with corn starch. Other places use full fat butter making the mouth feel too oily. This was was perfect! I also love the texture of the mochi cakes. I came toward store closing, so there was a limited menu available as many items had already sold out. The durian choux here was amazing! I generally try durian desserts with some trepidation, but this one floored me in how tasty it was, without being overwhelming in durian flavor. The kaya croissant was pretty good - standard croissant, and the kaya filling was generous so that there was enough for every bite of croissant. The pandan milk bread was what I expected. I've been in the mood to try new things and I found this while searching on Yelp. The menu doesn't cover everything that the website has to offer. I was planning on 7 items but saw so many more to choose from. My decision was to try the new stuff and go back and compare their standard dessert like egg tart to places I've been to before. Their website said they were the first place to sell pandan waffle so I definitely wanted to try that. I saw they use to run Le Monde bakery and I recall going to that place a couple times. They use to be off Lundy/Hostetter. My order consisted of the pandan waffle, pandan chiffon cake, banana mochi cake, guava cake, mochi cake and kaya choux. The only room I had left was to try the pandan waffle and guava mochi cake. The pandan waffle was the best I had compared to other places. The last place I tried it was big and fibrous. As I bit into the guava mochi cake, the mochi was fibrous and sweet tasting but I haven't gotten to the guava part yet. It took me several bites to get to it but there wasn't enough guava put into it. Today, I had the egg tart. It had a lighter taste to it and the crust tasted different than the Chinese ones. I don't mind having it again if I'm in the area. Finally getting to the pandan cake, it wasn't as flavorful as the waffle was. The regular mochi cake tasted the same as the guava minus the filling. My friends and I visited on a Saturday afternoon, we got lucky because the line died down a bit after running another errand. The service was quick, friendly and the cashier gave us some recommendations. We tried the Portuguese egg tart, black sesame choux and I had an iced strawberry matcha latte. I'll start with the positives, the strawberry matcha latte was delicious. Not overly sweet, and a good balance between matcha and strawberry flavors. The black sesame in the choux was delicious, however the pastry itself was dry. Unsure if it's because we came later in the day, but it was disappointing. The Portuguese tart did have a flaky crust, however the egg mixture was more like a thick custard. It was way too dense, I couldn't eat more than a bite or two. After hearing Century Bakery closed down, I was devastated because the pandan waffles they sold were a core memory of my childhood. Luckily, my friends told me it's now under this establishment and I was excited to try it! I ordered the pandan waffles but was also gifted multiple pastries from a friend. Swung by here about a week back for a small snack. Ever since I had read someone's food blog (maybe over a decade ago) about eating pandan toast in singapore, I have been obsessed with trying foods with pandan in it. Therefore, it was a no-brianer for me come to this bakery. My friend and I ordered one pandan waffle and one pandan eggtart to share. I guess I wanted to minimize my calorie intake for the day. :) But those pandan buns looked mightily tempting (maybe I had to keep myself from drooling). Maybe instead of hearing a bell like Pavlov's dogs, all you have to do is show me pandan buns. :) Anyhow, it looks like one order you get six of them. I didn't want to have to eat so many sweets so I decided against getting that. But maybe now I regret not buying the buns since I really did enjoy the waffle and egg tart. I was a longtime customer of Century Bakery back when they were inside Grand Century Mall, literally eating 2-3 of their pandan waffles once a week as I was growing up. When I heard about CA Bakehouse opening after Century Bakery closed, I was SO overjoyed! I visited about 8-10 minutes before 12 PM on a Saturday, and to my luck they were already taking orders and the line was pretty minimal. Right after we finished ordering, the crowd started coming and the line started to form! We tried the OG pandan waffle, kaya (pandan) croissant, ube & kaya choux, and strawberry matcha latte. + The pandan waffle we received was slightly overcooked and burnt on one side to my disappointment, but the flavors were definitely there and tasted just as I remembered! + The ube and kaya choux were great - I loved how much filling there was. The choux was light and airy too! + The croissant was also nicely filled, although I didn't enjoy the croissant towards the ends too much since it was slightly stale and there wasn't as much filling. + The strawberry matcha latte had the option to sub oat milk for an additional 50 cents which I appreciated! Also on the unfortunate side, it mainly tasted like 80% milk and 20% strawberry and matcha. I wish there was more strawberry! Zero caramelization on the top which differentiates the "Portuguese" egg tart from a regular egg tart. 3/5 - Pandan tart ($2.75): Tasted almost exactly like the Portuguese egg tart. 3/5 - Black sesame choux: ($2.50): Our least favorite. The crumbly top was very dry and although the black sesame filling had more flavor than some of the others, it was thick and clumpy. 2/5 - Pandan honeycomb cake ($2.50): I liked the chewiness! The pandan stood out more than its counterparts. 3.5/5 You can pre-order online to avoid the line, but it's their basic menu. Once we got there, we saw they had much more to choose from. I love this bakery for its emphasis on flavors that I grew up eating & loving (pandan, taro, durian), but find that it's a hit or a miss with the individual pastries for me. My favorite menu item is their Portuguese Egg Tart. Every custard flavor is delicious (my favorite might actually be the original!), and the dough is wonderfully flaky and crunchy from the caramelized sugar throughout. I'm not a huge fan of their choux.. it really needs to be eaten fresh, and even then, I think it doesn't have quite the right balance (filling is a little too heavy in comparison to the airy dough?). I've had quite a few of their other pastry offerings, and think that the rest are generally good. All in all, would recommend, especially for their southeast Asian flavors! read more

Anytime any body visits me, I take them here. They have the best baked goods ever!!! I love the egg tarts and ube croissants but you really cannot go wrong! We came at 1pm on a Saturday and while the line was pretty long, it moves quick. I would recommend coming before 2/3pm on a weekend in order to ensure they're in stock of the items you want! Everything sounded great on paper or on my screen, and here goes.... The waffles were cold and soggy. Nuoc Mia Vien Dong makes it wayyyyy better. The milk bread was so heavy and dense, I could probably knock a kid out with it. The tart crust for the pandan and durian egg tarts were so thick, it felt like they took a shortcut and used puff pastry for the tart shell, I felt like I was eating a cramped up croissant. The durian custard tasted good, the pandan wasn't that great. The custards were so wrinkly (think of someone's skin that desperately needs retinol,) it's like they didn't whisk it enough. If you've ever tried the egg tarts by Spoons Patisserie, you'll be very disappointed at CA Bakehouse. I'll give the kaya croissant another go, I didn't eat it right away, this was the best item out of the whole order. Was it flaky enough? Nope, I've had better day old croissants. Ordered all of the choux flavors to try along with the Kaya Croissant and Guava Mochi Cake. CA Bakehouse has very limited hours, 4-6 hours for Friday through Sunday. I didn't know, but you could pre-order online for faster pickup. Everything is best enjoyed fresh. My favorite choux flavors ended up being the black sesame. It was nutty with a deep sesame taste with out being too sweet. I found each flavor to be true to the flavors I ordered, meaning the flavors were distinct rather than artificial or muted. Although the kaya croissant is very popular, I found the pandan cream to be too sweet. We arrived half an hour before opening. Their baked goods just sitting and waiting. Two hours later, we stood in short line outside. A nice lady took our order with her tablet. The order was wrong. Everything was touchless, so i didn't get a receipt or email. They got my order wrong. They gave me 4 pandan tart instead of 2 regular and two pandan. Pandon croissant was huge, very buttery. I enjoyed the durian tart the best. Good flavor, and it wasn't too sweet. Pandan tart was good. It would be great to sell right from the oven. You would have to go back home and reheat everything to get it warmed up to taste the flaky crust. read more

TL;DR it's good but not amazing. Staff was friendly and the line moved quickly. Order ahead online to avoid the wait. Items I got (stars next to my favorites) - 1/2 kaya and ube croissant - *Portuguese and Kaya egg tarts - milk tea mochi and ube choux - pandan basque cheesecake - *banh bo (honeycomb cake) - pork bun Originally came because of the hype around the colorful croissants and egg tarts. Croissant itself is just ok but the kaya cream is pretty good. It did not have the flaky and crisp exterior I was looking for. The ube flavor in the cream was pretty subtle. The regular egg tart was better than pandan IMO, overall the custard was creamy and smooth. My favorite was actually the banh bo (honeycomb cake). It has a really lovely mochi-like texture, very springy yet soft on the inside with a slight crumb texture on the outside. The pandan basque cheesecake had a good flavor but it seemed more like a regular cheesecake to me. The top was just slightly burnt and the interior was dense yet smooth. The cream puffs are probably best to be eaten asap. I tried them maybe 6 hours after getting them and the craquelin was not crunchy. The milk tea mochi was an interesting texture, but not my preference inside of a cream puff. It was too sweet for me, and it also had pearls. The ube puff was better but did not have a strong ube flavor. Worth going to if you're in the area and if you like pandan. read more

The plaza where this place is located gets super busy so parking may be difficult to find. Came 15 mins before noon on Sunday and it seemed like they were already accepting orders. Not sure how early they take orders that doesn't match their posted hours. Doesnt matter though, I'm thankful they took orders early. I can only imagine how busy they get considering they're only opened three days a week Don't be discouraged by the line, it moves pretty fast. My order got called out quickly too. I think people who order more items or a waffle have to wait longer since it's made to order. Love how simple their menu is. Flavors are repetitive and just comes in different carb options LOL. The croissants were a little dry compared to how I normally like them but the pandan and ube flavor are delicious! It was my first time going there this weekend and I was surprised at the price. Pretty affordable compared to other bake shops charging $5 for a tiny croissant. I paid about $20 for everything pictured. From everything on their menu, I suggest ordering the Portuguese egg tart and the banana walnut Mochi cake. Both tasted warm, fresh, and I loved the texture! Can't wait to go back!! read more

Fantastic! I've had my eye on CA Bakehouse for a while, but because they're only open 3 afternoons/week, I've never been able to time my visit correctly. But today I can finally say, it WAS worth the wait! On a Sunday around 1PM, there was a line of about 3 people, but thankfully it moved very quickly. I wasn't quite sure what to order, and the girl at the counter was extremely helpful with recommendations/descriptions of the items. I ended up choosing the Portuguese Egg Tart, Kaya Croissant, Ube Taro Croissant, and Honeycomb Cake. Although I expected to wait a bit, my order was ready in under 10 minutes. Everything I got was delicious, and I LOVE that none of it was too sweet. The Kaya Croissant was the undisputed favorite between my boyfriend and I, but the Portuguese Egg Tart was a close second. They also had a check-in offer of $3 for Thai Ice Tea with $5 purchase, which I definitely need to try out next time. Overall, probably my favorite bakery in San Jose! read more

You cant go into the shop; they have you order at the door. So it makes it a little hard to know what you want by looking at a list. I ordered the kaya croissant honeycomb cake, kaya egg tart and pandan milkbread. So Kaya is green coconut. The egg-tart center was very tasty, the outer part not so much. The croissant was flaky and the filling was very tasty, similar to the middle of the egg tart.. like pudding. The "Honeycomb", I guess its called that for how it bakes up. But it is soft gelatin, was ok. The bread has a center with the green coconut sweetened. It was dense and needed to warm 1 minutes per piece. Ordered a pandan honeycomb cake, 6 egg tarts, and 8 Ube croissants for desserts/breakfast. All of them were quite good except the honeycomb cake. It has an artificial taste to it that the kids didn't like especially after warming it up the next day. We also tried their pandan waffle which went soft very quickly and didn't have the crunch on the outside and chewiness on the inside that the kids liked at other shops. Pass on the pandan waffle for us but it does smell heavenly which of course is always inviting to customers craving for sweet treats. read more

I don't usually eat bready things but the choux here warranted a try. Visiting SJ/Bay area for a few days, I did some research and came across this place which was open Friday, the day I was leaving. So after lunch we came by and I ordered 1 of each of the choux except durian (kaya aka pandan, ube/taro, black sesame, hojicha). I also shared a waffle with my family. My sister got a guava mochi roll and my brother got a Portuguese egg tart, both of which I did not try. The choux pastries had a light texture, flaky and airy with some crumb toppings to give it extra texture. The cream fillings were all good and not too heavy tasting, although I wish there was a more dense flavor. The waffle was nice and light with a subtle hint of pandan. Usually I don't like to eat waffles since it tastes battery but this one was not like that. I would come back here again but I wouldn't say it's on the top of my list. Meanwhile it's located in a Vietnamese shopping plaza with some excellent authentic food choices too, which I will try when I'm back. read more
