We are locals. We have ordered from Cafe 82 for years and occasionally we dine in. Since Covid, however, we have noticed every time that we sat indoors, they did not check for proof of vaccination. So I went this morning just for a cup of coffee to go for my wife. They charged me nearly 4 dollars, which I thought was steep, but I didn't complain. However, my wife didn't want the coffee because it made her sick before. So I asked politely if the server could please pour coffee into the same container without milk and sugar so I could take it out for myself. The server rudely refused and said I had to pay for another cup of coffee. That's nearly $8 for a cup of coffee, and I ultimately left with nothing at all after the server kicked me out for "talking too much." It wouldn't have cost the diner anything to give the same free refill that they would have served me had I have chosen to dine in. But we won't dine in this diner because they don't check for proof of vaccination, and now we won't order delivery from them either. read more

I have lived in the neighborhood for several years and I can't believe that my first takeout was 7/30. I've since ordered again. The Chicken Souvlaki on Pita with french fries, mixed greens and tomato was made to order and perfect. The salad was fresh - not always the case at other places. Tenzi, was the person who ordered my food and packed everything up. He is a terrific representation for this restaurant. Patrons don't just come back for the food! This used to be one of my go-to spots in the neighborhood but after my visit this weekend, I will not be returning for a while. I ordered the matzo ball soup and my husband ordered the chicken orzo, they were the EXACT SAME SOUPS. The only difference was that mine had a small sized matzo ball in the middle. The broth was pretty gross and came to us cold. We also split the pizza burger and the sauce almost tasted stale with the meat pretty inedible. We didn't finish any of our dishes which says a lot. The staff was friendly and helpful which helped save a few stars in my reviews but I feel like the prices are increasing and quality of the food decreasing greatly over the past few months/years. read more

I wish I could give this place zero stars. Seriously, it was so horrible I had to write a review. There were two other people in my party, one who ordered pancakes that they served burnt and with hair in them. When we inquired about this, the server proceeded to stick his hands in the pancakes in attempt to display to us they were not burnt. Another red flag (with any restaurant) is when the busser is more helpful than the waiter, I'm appalled by the fact that he felt the need to put his hand in the food, and then when they made the second batch, he did the same exact thing flipping the pancakes around with his hands to show me that they weren't burnt. The other person in my party ordered the steak and eggs and the steak was over cooked and bland. I ordered the fish and chips, which more closely resembled middle school lunch food than classic fish and chips. Very poor excuse for a diner with the prices they have. Definitely will not be returning and would never recommend this place to another. On top of this, the service was horrible and very inattentive. The worst part- neither of us made it through the meal before getting sick. I guess this isn't too shocking considering their poor sanitary practices. Save yourself the money and never go to this place, there are many more desirable options in the area. HORRIBLE food and even worse service. read more

Today we needed to eat (an early) dinner in-between seeing two plays not far from here and we noticed this place after leaving Barnes & Noble. It turned out to be a *great* choice, as every aspect was terrific; delicious food, very pleasant & attentive service (from two servers), everything was very clean (including the restrooms), it was fairly quiet, and we had a nice little table by the window. My husband ordered the chicken pot pie, which was *enormous* (he could easily have gotten another meal out of it). I ordered the spinach & mushroom quiche. Both of our meals came with a cup of soup and we had the butternut squash (wonderfully-creamy), and mine came with a vegetable & a potato (I chose the string beans - which were "the real deal" - and sweet potatoes [which were cut into many pieces and it was a very generous serving]). My husband's meal cost $18.95 and mine cost $14.95 (before tax and tip), which we felt was incredibly reasonable. This place has an "A" rating from the Health Dept. read more

Asked for a medium hamburger- got it very rare. Tasted disgusting. Matter a fact do not feel well since I ate it. Ok, so I eat here all the time. I have celiac's disease so I eat only gluten free foods. They have a wide array of gf foods. I love their pastas and pancakes. The dishes are large enough to have eat for 2 meals. My only complaint: they don't seem to have separated kitchen space. Occasionally, I have eaten their "GF buns" (actually just English Muffins), my lips puff up and stomach hurts later - classic signs of gluten poisoning. I am not too sure that the kitchen staff uses separate pots, toasters, and other equipment to cook the gluten free food. This will make a Celiac sufferer a little sick. They started out great when they first introduced the gf menu, but I think they just gave up being super diligent (which is necessary). They also never label the takeout containers. I am always worried that they accidentally sent the wrong one. They need to write ("GF") or have special stickers on take out. Too much room for error and freaks out the customer when there is a simple solution. And, yes, I have gotten a gluten dish before on a takeout order due to this exact error. :( Conclusion: Great idea to have a giant gluten free menu, however - due to lack of organization in the kitchen, you may run the risk of slight gluten poisoning. I love their food though, so I wish they would ramp up the procedures to ensure that GF customers can enjoy their delicious meals without any worries or illness. I have never been to the West End of NYC. Was my first time as of this morning. I go to NYC three to four times a month on business and pleasure... Was here on business for Pet Fashion Week. A few of my colleagues and friends were with me on this event. So t was my turn to treat so I said why not a good breakfast before the second show. We travel up and down Broadway everything was high price ,same menu and this one was lower same type of food and very clean. Even the rest rooms. That is a plus for me especially in NYC and a Ladies room at that. Not no shared restrooms. The breakfast runs from $9.00 . Coffee and orange juices from $2.25 to $3.00. They do not charge extra for coffee. I had four more cups and everyone else had three. We stayed for two hours and was not ask to leave... Another plus.. So compared to places on the East Side of Broadway that rush you. This place I gave a four star for that reason. read more

I've lived around the corner for almost 3 years and never been; there are just too many other fab restaurants in the hood. We were sick of our typical bougie brunches, and after an exceptionally rowdy Saturday night, we needed good ole diner food for breakfast on Sunday. The food was FINE. Just fine. I asked for my bacon and home fries to be "EXTRA well-done." Not "crispy," not "a little brown," but EXTRA well-done. Shiz was soggy as hell. The hostess and staff were just gossiping and chitchatting very loudly, which honestly I have no problem with at a diner. An old woman asked them to please keep it down a bit, and they told her she could move if she wants. Is this real life? Someone please tell me. We asked for the check, and after about 10 minutes too long, we got it. My boyfriend took out cash to pay but we were still picking on our food and hanging out. There is absolutely nothing special or noteworthy about this place, and with about 4,482 better dining options within 10 blocks, I'm not sure why anyone frankly would go back a second time. I'm not usually a fan of steak fries, but these were nice and crispy. However, the burger was a complete disappointment. I'd been craving a burger and this did not hit the spot. The turkey patty was dry. The onion rings were stale. The bun was soggy from the tomatoes. I had requested no tomatoes, pickle, or cole slaw. They did not oblige. I had to make my way over to Cafe Eighty Two to try the gluten-free menu, and I was not disappointed. The gf menu is extensive! Waffles, pancakes, sandwiches, burgers, desserts....FRIES! So I had the turkey burger deluxe, which came with fries, lettuce and tomato, pickles and coldslaw. When the burger came, I could not believe the size of the burger patty! It was huge! (On the flatter side, but really wide). You can have the burger on a gf english muffin or gf sandwich bread (toasted?) - I opted for the english muffin, which wwas kind of chewy; it was definitely gluten-free. But it still had the unique taste of an english muffin. The fries were good, but not crunchy/fried enough for my taste - they were VERY lightly fried, kind of mushy in the middle. Still, this was a REALLY good meal overall, very tasty. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive. Will definitely go back. I have to try the pancakes, of course! :) read more

Walked in to get out of a blizzard, near a certain linen shop that I was planning on going to. I have been here before, but I didn't remember too much. Had the challah French Toast with a side of sausage. The french toast was nice and moist, not too eggy. The sausage is delicious, well-seasoned and tender. One gripe- they give you little packets of Smucker's syrup rather than anything passing as good maple syrup, luckily I didn't put too much on. Also, I was seated near the door and the place is busy (5 minute wait for the 2-top, not too bad), so it got very cold whenever the door opened- the double doors didn't help too much as they were always both open. It's definitely a very good place for your diner brunch on UWS, most of the good places died already, but this survived- because it's good and reliable. read more

Four stars for great dessert and service. Did not try the food, so take this review with a grain of salt. Zach K. and I came in on a weekday after dinner for dessert. We were having a catchup sesh and gabbed away for about an hour. Zach K. had the hot chocolate with whipped cream (he was trying to be good) while I had the black & white milkshake. The milkshake was awesome, and so was the hot chocolate. Our server was SO friendly and perfectly cool with us hanging out for a while. This is the typical local diner/coffee shop that you ignore most of the time but every once in a while throw some business. For me, this usually occurs when i'm craving a chicken souvlaki sandwich which they do a good job with. I've had a few other dinner items here like chicken caesar salad. The portions are pretty generous and the prices aren't bad. The pancakes and french toast are pretty good and worthy of a low-maintenance brunch. The place itself is non-descript. No diner chic - more generic coffee shop decor (including the counter in the back). Service is fine. If you're craving a good diner, I'd go to Big Nick's on 77th which has the menu on steroids that I expect in a diner. If you're craving a good brunch, there's plenty of other places on amsterdam. But for a low maintenance plan B (or a chicken souvlaki), this place does the trick. Now while I doubt most pass by this establishment and mistake it for a Parisian cafe, it does beg the question on whether there should be an unwritten agreement b/w restaurants and consumers that "Cafe" can only be used for establishments that have a nice interior, good coffee/tea, and a menu balanced b/w sandwiches, pastries, and desserts. Just seems odd that we've got high quality dining "Coffee Shops" and "Diners" in this city and no frills Cafes.... read more

Cafe 82 provides a gluten free menu upon request, and is a participating member in the Gluten Free Restaurant Awareness program. "Gluten free" definitely means gluten free at this place - the whole staff is well trained. Cafe 82 is also just a good old fashioned diner, with great salads, pretty good burgers and full dinner options. Portions are ample, as you expect from a good NYC diner. I love being able to eat out again, and am so grateful that they offered gluten free Thanksgiving today, the first real Thanksgiving dinner I've been able to enjoy in years. Really nice staff, good atmosphere, and reasonably priced. Dinner companions order what they want from the regular menu, I have my menu, and everyone is happy. read more

Most expensive diner breakfast of my life! Now before this moment I was quite pleased with my experience. These were literally the most massive pancakes ever. After the fourth bite, something seemed wrong and I stopped eating. When I paid the bill, the cashier told me that it wasn't homemade. I always have 2 eggs over easy, rye toast, potatoes AND, More importantly huge, delicious sausages not the piddling pencil thin links you usually get in diners! Decided to go out for Sunday brunch. My daughter and I selected a few options by looking at 4-5 star neighborhood restaurants on Yelp. Made our way to 3 of the restaurants on our list. Sadly for us, there was an hour wait. Next step is to find a place to eat without a wait. We stumbled upon Cafe Eighty-two. It is a typical NYC diner with typical diner food, typical diner atmosphere and waitstaff. Instead of brunch, we ended up with breakfast. I ordered my usual diner breakfast: two poached eggs on top of crisp corned beef hash with crisp home fries, wheat toast and coffee. No surprise, it tasted exactly as it should. My daughter selected a similar egg dish: eggs Florentine, two poached eggs on top of spinach and feta sauté with home fries, rye toast and coffee. It was very tasty. It was not the brunch we envisioned but it hit the spot. read more

A very typical NYC diner on the UWS that is open late and has a decent menu with sandwiches, soups, dinner specils, and salads. We came at 10:30 on a Thursday night and it was packed with locals grabbing a late-night bite. My roasted portabello salad with spinach was okay, and the burgers are very small and reminiscent of what you would find at a fast-food place. The roast beef and pastrami hot sandwiches are very solid, and probably your best bet here. Prices are very reasonable and it came to less than $25 for a burger, entree salad, and cup of soup, although the burger does not come with fries. This was the worst Diner I have eaten at in a long time. This Diner has alot of regular customers that are more seasoned then the food. Great for the elderly coming in because they may be suffering from diabetes. My steak was so bland, along with the eggs.
