The ice cream was sweet and creamy, but it was a bit hard which made the dessert a bit difficult to eat. It did pair well with the croissant taiyaki which was flaky and nicely glazed. It was crispy and chewy. It was also slightly warmed before the ice cream was inserted which was a nice contrast. I love a la mode desserts, so this was right up my alley! I still moved across the cute little dessert place in Koreatown in a very unlikable Plaza. The place is super tiny and have like four tables. I think I can fit probably 10 people or less. There was only one person working behind the counter. The menu is very small but intimate. I had the plain sugar cro-boong and the espresso cream filled cro-boong. It is basically a caramelized glazed croissant in a fish shape. Similar to a taiyaki but sugar glaze coated. You must try it. It is so good. I wish they would make more variations, such as fruits on the side or something. I come here every time I am in Koreatown, which is not very often. Ice cream was nice and nutty and the taiyaki was nice and crispy. A little hard to eat, but it was good. The strawberry cream boong. This was the star of the show. It's basically a cream taiyaki sandwich but it has a strawberry cream, some kind of strawberry syrup, and fresh strawberries the cream is light and not too sweet. I'm typically not into sweets but this I can probably eat at least a couple. This place has a great product and I would go back for that--but I have to admit, the interior looks a little sparse and if a little more elbow grease was put into it I think this place could be the next trendy place for dessert. Was in the area and went on Yelp to look for dessert spots - saw the photos from Cafe Bandal and knew I wanted to try the taiyaki. This place is located in Los Angeles in a pretty decent sized plaza. There's a small parking lot that does get busy. Luckily we were able to secure a spot right away. There wasn't anybody inside the store, so we had the whole place to ourselves. Decide to order the cream bro-boong, which is basically the taiyaki filled with a cream filling (each is $5, but if you buy more, the prices get fairly cheaper). You can also just get the taiyaki itself for $4 with no filling, or opt to get it filled with an ice cream filling for $6.50. We ended up choosing the milk cream and the custard cream. These came out fairly quickly. Was worried that they'd use already made taiyakis that are cold (which somebody had mentioned in a review), but the worker made it fresh and it was still warm when we started to eat the dessert. So like others have mentioned, what sets Cafe Bandal's taiyaki apart from other taiyakis is the shell. This one has a more caramelized shell that gives it a crispiness when you bite into it. Coupled with the cold cream filling, each bite was amazing - and also super heavy. We definitely over-ordered; one would have been enough for the both of us to share. I enjoyed the custard and the cream one, but I think the custard with the taiyaki was a little too sweet and the cream was the perfect balance. There's some chairs/tables if you want to sit inside the store. There's also games that are provided if you want to play a game or chat with friends. tl;dr - Honestly, I really enjoyed the desserts! Absolute hidden gem!! The strawberry taiyaki I got was amazing. They use croissant dough instead of a pancake mixture. Not only were there fresh strawberries in my taiyaki, but the cream they used was also strawberry flavored. The whole thing was delicious. The Lychee Chamomile ice tea I got was amazing as well. It pains me to say, especially because the service was pleasant... but the product was pretty bad. I think there is potential with some tuning. We ordered the strawberry cream flavor. The croffle outer shell itself is extremely sweet. Then the cream is sweet, and there is strawberry jam in there too. There is so much sugar content in one of these things my pancreas was begging for mercy by the end. And I only ate half! The filled bungeoppang are assembled to order, but the shells have been sitting there all day so they're cold and not fresh. Because of the sugar coating, I get that it wouldn't be easy to reheat them. But instead, the sugar coating has been exposed to ambient moisture all day and become a weird sticky texture on top of the hardened bread. It is difficult to cut with a knife or pick up with a fork. The coffee has been sitting in an airpot all day long so we decided to get cold brew. But that tasted so bad as if it was made with incorrectly reconstituted concentrate or something. The storefront looks unorganized because the shelves of ingredients and kitchen equipment are just out in plain view. The tables are flimsy like when you go to Ikea and sort by price low to high. I am a huge fan of Tayaki and I will tell you that this is HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE TAIYAKI EVER. Their Tayaki,Cro-Bang , is a waffle sugar glazed tayaki. I personally like it plain but their cream filling options make it even better! The banana cream, espresso cream, and milk cream were light and full of flavor. The cream compliments the Cro-bang rather than overwhelms it. On a hot day, the ice cream option will be a must! Please be patient as it does take a bit just as it normally does with any tayaki place as it is fresh off the press. To top it off, the Tanghulu was amazing. Tanghulu is fruit that has been candied with a sugar coating. It may sound weird but it truly is a great treat whether it is hot or cold outside! The dessert is as pretty and tasty as it looks in the photos. There's a caramel crust outside the dough that is not too sweet but adds the crunchiness and the dough is super buttery like a croissant. It went well with either the ice cream or the custard, both were very good as well. However it was very hard to eat it. The plastic spoon that was provided was unable to cut into the crust formed by the sugar so although it was super delicious, the establishment could think of a better way for the customer to cut it. Unless it was supposed to be eaten with the hands, but because of the sugar outside, that wouldn't be a good idea also, especially in these hot days.
