I live in Birmingham, but am on a gastronomic trip to New Orleans specifically to try foods I have never tried before. Today that meant trying escargot and crawfish. I know, I know, how can anyone reach adulthood, let alone middle age, without ever having tried crawfish. My waiter was shocked. I picked Cafe Degas for the escargot, not the crawfish, but when I saw crawfish quiche on the menu I figured I could kill two birds with one stone. To cover my bets I also ordered the French Onion Soup, knowing that of the three things I ordered, I'd like at least one of them. While I waited for the first course to arrive, my waiter brought some bread to the table. The bread was so so. Not gonna lie, I've had better bread. I've had worse bread, too, so I'm not really complaining, but so far nothing to write home about. Then the snails came out. Okay, the escargot. My research led me to expect them to still be in their shells, and for them to be served with some kind of tool to extract them. Nope. they come in a little round escargot dish, with little divots made to hold them. Not a shell in sight. Those divots also hold lucious garlic butter that covers the little snails. I don't mean "little" in a disparaging way, as in ,"jeepers, they're so small, i'm getting ripped off!" I mean little in an adorable way, as in, "look at the cute little puppies!" The escargot come with three pieces of whatever-the-fancy-word-for-toast-is. I took a deep breath, stabbed an escargot, parked it on piece of fancy toast and took a bite. Sweet fancy Moses! I don't know why I'd waited so long to try these things. They were delicious. I'd been warned that overcooked escargot is rubbery, but that wasn't an issue here. as they were cooked perfectly. Nothing rubbery about them. I scarfed down the rest of them, and took that "so so" bread and made it "exceptional" bread by dipping it into the leftover garlic butter. The French onion soup came next, I'm sure it was great, but after the escargot it just seemed a let down. Then came the crawfish quiche, which was accompanied by a side salad. The tomato could have been left off, as it was a sad tomato, but the rest of the salad, especially the dressing, was wonderful. The quiche itself, leaving aside for a moment the crawfish, was outstanding. I'm usually not a fan of quiche. My other experiences with it were either overcooked, dried up things that were closer to frittatas in texture, or runny, soupy things that had no business being served to anyone. This was cooked perfectly. moist, creamy, yet fully cooked. it was delicious. Then add the crawfish, which was for me a new experience. All in all a perfect meal. read more

We have been to Cafe Degas many times and it has always been good. Seven of us went there last Saturday night. They brought out the dinners for 4 and the other 3 sat there for an extended period of time. When they brought out the food for the rest of us, our dinners were burned black. All 3 dinners were inedible. We sent them back and they told us they couldn't make the soft shell crabs because there "was a problem with their kitchen equipment" We all ordered something else, which of course resulted in a longer wait. After dinner, I went over to say something to the white haired gentleman who I thought was the manager. He was a co-owner. He was antagonistic and blamed it on us. read more

We visited for brunch on a weekday. The best part of our experience was sitting on the patio, people watching, and enjoying our romantic surroundings. We shared a cheese board; I ordered the French onion soup and the omelet of the day; and my partner ordered the steak frites. The cheese board was nice, but probably could have benefited from some spreadables. For my taste, and for lack of a better word, it just felt too dry, as though something else was needed to bring the flavors together. My French onion soup was easily the highlight of the meal and bursting with flavor. My omelet was supposed to be purely vegetarian, so I was surprised when I bit into it and discovered that it contained a very strong, off-putting seafood flavor, as though it was prepared using utensils that had been used for someone else's crawfish dish. Imagine if I had a shellfish allergy . . . My partner didn't care for his steak frites, but that was more to do with his personal preferences, and the steak being prepared & presented in an untraditional way (in a gravy). Our waitress gave off some strange vibes. Whenever we spoke to her, she would stare at us in silence for an uncomfortably long period of time. Also, it seemed she was frustrated with us for ordering too much food and being indecisive about how much of it we should box up and take home with us. After we paid, I used the restroom and crossed paths with her on my way back to the table. Not only did she not say something like "Thank you" or "Have a good day," she wouldn't even make eye contact. For an establishment of this reputation, with these prices, I expect better service. read more

Nice date spot. Cute patio. Mixed positives and negatives. The quail in the quail salad was absolutely perfect. The mixed greens, however, had some icky pieces that should have been sorted out and not served. There is really no excuse for serving spoiled ingredients. The cheese plate (Manchego, Tallegio) had a few not-so-fresh fruits but was otherwise lovely. The house French bread (served with butter pats wrapped in individual institutional foils) was toasty and nice but, oddly, seemed to have been baked with coconut oil, presumably to prevent sticking to the baking pan. The coconut flavor unfortunately overwhelmed the bread in a distracting way. They should switch to olive oil on the bread. Good wine (Aegerter Pinot). Nice ambience. Passable to excellent service, depending on the server. I could overhear a nearby table complaining about the coffee, which contains chicory. Your call whether that's a plus or nah. Next time I'll make a reservation and try the Reveillon menu. I do wish people would refrain from bringing kids here. It's not a place for kids, yet two different tables had several small children each at 9:30PM on a Saturday. Strange. Not what I'd expect of a bistro. Overall: solid chaotic good. read more

We are from Baton Rouge and always try to find someplace new when we happen to be in nola- we walked up to Cafe Degas on a Wednesday and were instantly charmed by a live string trio playing on the porch surrounded by lights with all of the doors open. We were lucky enough to be seated (we didn't have a reservation) outside by the music. Emma waited on us and was great- the cocktails were perfect and the food was excellent. We had the pâté plate, escargot, French onion soup and the lamb. Its was all so delicious and sitting on the porch listening to the love music (which they have on Wednesdays) made it even better. I thought my quiche with crawfish could have been cooked a little longer as I'm used to a firmer texture but it was as delicious. Lovely cozy, romantic tree house feel for a restaurant. An actual tree runs thru it. Only one big reason to knock off a star & that's for brunch. We had a beautiful five star dinner the night before. L'OMELETTE DE CREVETTES AU FINE HERBS is at fault. The Omelette was fluffy & creamy, just ask for NO shrimp! Our server said that the chef doesn't de-vein them for the Omelette. She totally agreed & preferred not to eat them either. How gross to see unclean shrimp! They should disclose it on the menu. We also asked for what the table next to us got w/ the asparagus, which was the La Crèpe au Crabe w/ hollandaise. In love w/ this lite & fluffy sweetness that melts in your mouth. Oh so good! They bring out this dry erase board dessert menu so hoping they never change this one. ON TO DINNER: L'ONGLET DE BOEUF * Seared hanger steak, pomme frites, vegetables, toasted shallot & garlic bordelaise. Beautifully cooked & you must soaked the pomme frites in the sauce. The frites are the best I've ever had here. PAN-SEARED RACK OF LAMB & LAMB MERGUEZ SAUSAGE * Served w/ haricots very, fingerling potatoes, smoked Vidalia onions, au jus. Another five star dinner chef. Delicious! LES ESCARGOT BOURGUIGNONS * Broiled Escargots, herbed garlic butter, herbsaint. Not a fan of escargot, but love the unique addition of the parsley crostinis! My cousin loved the escargot. L'ASSIETTE DE PATÉS * House made smooth & country patés w/ garlic, dry saucissons, fig mustard & cornichons. That lovely whole roasted garlic tho! Mmm! Nice wine to go w/ all of the savory dishes. Next time I'll have to try their HH which is only on Wednesday & Thursday from 3-6p. In NOLA for a food show and I was invited to Cafe Degas for a little "local flavor". Playing off the history of Edgar Degas, as you enter the restaurant you will notice the French flair that is the theme carried throughout. The wine list is shallow and the menu, though ripe with dishes in French, is generic. Nothing shouts fine cuisine here. I asked one of my dining partners how they decided upon this place. They told me it was named one of the essential places to eat in 2018 on Eater.com. My advice to Eater, you might want to visit a restaurant first before giving it the praise. As for the food. We tried the escargot. It was smothered in a sauce so thick I wondered what they were hiding. My steak arrived with Pomme Frites that wouldn't have made it in McDonalds. The steak itself was average. Went here for lunch with a few girls and sat outside on the lovely porch/balcony. Couldn't have been a prettier day for outdoor dining. Our server was an authentic French man who was speaking in French to a couple of the guests I was with who also knew French. Ordered the mussels and flash-fried oyster salad. There are many great restaurants in New Orleans, but Cafe Degas is our very favorite. Having lived for 25 years in New York City and visited Paris, I have eaten at enough excellent French restaurants to consider myself an amateur FrancoFoodaPhile. Cafe Degas has excellent cuisine, both their traditional dishes and those with a distinctly Louisiana flair. Cocktails are excellent, as is the wine list. The wines in particular are well curated so that there are several good choices in any category without any one bottle breaking the bank. The chef makes great use of local foods and the specials rotate regularly. My wife and I dined at Cafe Degas for her birthday in September and then took my parents there a couple of weeks ago when they were visiting from. Boston. This is my go-to restaurant when I want fine dining at reasonable prices in a relaxed atmosphere. The service is always great. Jason usually waits on us and he always has great recommendations. He goes above and beyond to make sure that every visit to Cafe Degas feels special and takes a personal interest in each diner. My experience with the other staff members had been equally positive. We just love this restaurant! read more

I've recently moved away from New Orleans, and this is one of the places I miss the most! Cafe Degas is one of those lovely, low-key institutions where you can go for any occasion: brunch, dinner with friends, a lazy lunch by yourself. You can't go wrong with their bistro classics like escargots, mussels, French onion soup, quiche, and the Niçoise salad; you'll find the NOLA flavor and flair in dishes like the crawfish ravioli. I recommend sitting outside in the shade on a hot day or under the twinkling lights at night, or next to the window when it rains. The staff is always friendly, and you'll probably make some friends at the table next to you, too. And get their cookbook! Even if I'm no longer a local, I'll always visit this place when I return to visit. read more

Not sure why it took me so long to try this place when it was recommended to me a long time ago. When I thought of having a French brunch, I thought of a place that would've been cute and fancy but nope. Don't get me wrong, it's a cute place but I was expecting more. It's ok though because my experience here was phenomenal. Our waitress was nice and attentive. I wish I could remember her name. Started off with escargot and mussels for the table. Escargot was good but mussels, y'all, the mussels! Mussels with frites. They were absolutely delicious! I would've ordered another as my meal if I hadn't already ordered other dishes. Rack of lamb and la crepe au crabe. The lamb had a strong smell but the overall flavors mixed well together. The crab crepe was good but it might've taste better if it was an omelette, I think. Still enjoyed it though. Topped off the meal with creme brulee. So, we definitely ate more than expected for brunch, I guess we ate more like a lunch or dinner meal (haha). It was difficult to choose only one dish! We'll be back to try other items next time. read more

July through Sept is Coolinary New Orleans, where you can experience the pricier restaurants in the area at a special rate on a very limited menu. Cafe Degas participates in such event. I decided to check it out with some friends. For $38, you could have 3 courses; soup/salad, entree, and dessert. Their prices normally run in the teens and twenties per item, so 3 for $38 is a pretty good deal albeit minimal options. Cafe Degas is French food nestled in a cozy space in a residential area not far from city park. Its a bit hidden from the trees but I found it through the green "Dega" neon light. There is an outside patio and an air conditioned indoor area. The building is small and feels cramped upon entry, but they make the most of their space. I wasn't crazy about their tiny restroom and wondered if they could facilitate the handicapped. The coolinary menu, not quite what you see listed online. Online, I saw options for $20 2 course lunch and $35 3 course option. When I was given the menu, the only coolinary option on the menu was a 3 course for $38 with less options. That's fine, its still a deal. It wasn't that different from their regular menu and I was almost tempted to just order from that. It didn't seem their signature dishes were even part of the special. The 3 courses, unlike what's listed online, Im guessing the menu is subject to change. Instead of choosing from salmon or rabbit (listed online) the choice was duck confit or fish of the day. Instead of choosing between ice cream or meringue (floating island) for dessert, it was only the meringue. Thats not to say it was a bad thing, but I like to go to a restaurant knowing what to expect. I chose a beet and apple salad with vinaigrette, the fish of the day with like a type mashed potato and sautéed vegetables, and the floating island. Salad was a great addition to the hot day. It was light, and tasty. None of it went to waste. Next, the fish..it was cooked well and had a nice crust coat of seasoning. I found it slightly salty but it was to meant to touch the thicker part of the fish. I didnt care for the bed of potato puree beneath my fish. It was bland and the texture was off putting. I realize it is supposed to compliment the fish with all its seasoning ,but felt it failed. Still ate it to dampen the saltiness. Dessert, the floating island. Wasn't sure what to expect here. It turned out to be the best part of the meal. It was a unique dish for me and I was pleasantly surprised. Its a meringue floating on top of a custard like sauce and topped with almonds. The meringue was like a cloud that melted in your mouth and the sauce was just the nectar to help it slide down your throat. It was delicious and also a perfect choice for the summer heat. If you like French cuisine, this is a great choice. I wasn't crazy about the bathroom's size, it doesn't appear to be handicap friendly (I could be wrong) and it's not that easy to find with all the trees (look for Nonna Mia's, its on the left of it). read more

Loved the atmosphere and although the restaurant is busy it was still quiet enough to visit with friends. There is also outside seating that I'm looking forward to enjoying. We were heading to see St Louis #3 cemetery, saw this place nearby and decided to grab some lunch. What a wonderful decision it turned out to be! This place is so adorable and inviting--it is hard to resist once you lock eyes on it. It was a perfect day for eating outside on their quaint little patio. Our waitress, Jennifer, was quite the character. She was a flurry of non sequitur jokes, comments and tidbits about Nola all enveloped in a positive energy that was contagious. We really enjoyed having her as our server. The food, from the first piece of crusty baguette to the last morsel of lunch, was fantastic. We had the escargot and the quail salad as an appetizer. Both were amazing and we really could have stopped there and walked away satisfied, but we are gluttons for punishment, gastronomical sadists if you will. We soldiered on through the trout, steak frites and the oyster salad. I can't honestly tell you which one was better. Everything was perfect down to the garnishes. Had reservations here and asked to bump it up on a super busy night and they were more than accommodating. The staff here is extremely hardworking and our server was personally working a 12+ hour shift and handling everything like a warrior. The food was really filling and tasty. I enjoyed my bread to start, and ordered the bisque as well as crawfish ravioli. I thought the bisque was just alright, but the ravioli was very interesting and tasty. The flavors were strong, but in a way that worked. The shrimp had great texture and crisp. The jumbo lemon crab salad was absolutely fantastic. All the flavors meshed well together and it turned out to be one of the best salads I'd ever had. The desserts were fantastic. The raspberry chambord cake, Paris-brest pastry, creme brulee, dark chocolate decadence, and frozen lemon icebox pie were very well made and super delicious. My favorite of the bunch was definitely the rapsperry chambord, and I'd recommend that particular dish before any others on the menu unless you have an aversion to the fruit or are allergic. The only purely French restaurant I know if in New Orleans. Food was delicious and prepared in a light, fresh style. French can be heavy sometimes, so this is better. Main dining area is a open air, covered patio that is along one of New Orleans most beautiful and most historic avenues. Close to the Fairgrounds, City Park, and Downtown. Taxi is probably the best way to reach this place, though taking the Canal Street Streetcar to the City Ark Stop, followed by a 15 minute walk would be delightful on a cool Spring or Fall day. Service is knowledgeable and especially courteous. This is one of our favorite restaurants for entertaining guests! read more

The only reason I have this place an overall 3 star when I rated all the categories 2 star was because some other people in the group I was with enjoyed their meals. Food: steak was rare ordered it mid-rare, I ate it anyway because it was a hanger steak, their okay rare. All my " roasted " veggies were raw, they forgot my fried egg and when it came, they brought one, the menu clearly said two. Service: I GUARANTEE the reason my food sucked was because the server forgot my order. Food was last to the table, raw and items forgotten, these things happen together only when an order is forgotten. Also, we had one child with us, did his good come out first? Like what should be done at any service restaurant , no it was brought last, if you don't include my forgotten order. Atmosphere: one of the hotter days we've had lately and it took us meningitis Mentioning to them that their fans should be on, WOW. This placed used to be very solid and enjoyable in both service and food. But today is a disappointment. Started with a wait to get the order because the server was covering a big area of the main dining room. But it was ok since he apologized for the wait. Ordered an appetizer (escargot) and it came quickly as expected. Nice and buttery but served with 3 tiny pieces of toasted bread passed it's prime. No big deal since comp bread came nice and warm with good butter. We ordered our entrees the same time as the appetizer. After 1/2 an hour from finishing our appetizer, the food has not come out, and the server has not checked on us during that time obviously because he would have noticed that our food has not come out. I finally called him to follow-up. He came back to say that the 'kitchen gave away' the food since there was a mix-up with the table. So ok, the food came out quickly after he followed up so it would have been fine but this is probably the only visit that I we did not enjoy the food. The grillades was overly salty so even eaten with the accompanying grits, it's still salt. It's probably because those dishes get saltier the longer they are left simmering, not sure. The tuna on the salad that my husband ordered which was supposed to be medium rare is so well done (it looked like fried instead of seared) and dry. The saving grace is the dessert that I order to go...banana pistachio cake is to die for. The service was lacking not because of the server but because of the way they divided the dining room so I don't really take the lack of service from the server (still tipped 20%) but whoever is managing the shift should do better. I should mention that the restaurant was not even as busy as usual because it is Superbowl week-end so I'm guessing that most people are in the City. Probably not going back. read more

Overall this restaurant is worth a try. However, I hope they listen to this customer feedback and are open to making a few changes. First the positive. The well staffed personnel gave exceptional and attentive service. Rachel was charming and had recommendations that were spot on. The naturalistic decor was relaxing and original; built around a decades old tree. The crawfish handmade paper thin raviolis were light packets of delight that explode in your mouth with complex flavors. One of the best raviolis I've ever eaten. And the duck confit and hanger steak were both tasty entrees. Lastly we appreciated the birthday dessert. Not every fine restaurant continues this generous tradition. Next a few constructive criticisms. We found the cheese plate and the cheese board very disappointing. As did the table next to us. We ordered the cheese board after the plate hoping the board would be more substantial for our one vegetarian guest, but both were equally lacking. Both orders were overflowing with fruit and stale bread and the cheese choices lacked imagination. (I've got Saint Andre, Manchego and cheddar cheese from Costco in my fridge at home.) My recommendation is to add more unique cheeses like France's "1924" blue cheese and pair the plate with local homemade jam, honey comb or nuts and freshly toasted crostini. Serving size can be small if it's quality. Also the wine list was very limited for a French restaurant and they didn't have even a single Mineral water choice. And my oyster salad was so salty that I couldn't finish it. The oysters were cooked perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft and creamy inside and the salad greens were fresh, but the breading on the oysters was way over salted. Someone in the kitchen needs to taste this dish and revisit the breading recipe. One sophisticated vegetarian entree option would be a nice upgrade too. We will revisit this beautiful restaurant and either avoid the disappointing dishes or hope they have made a few changes. read more

We had a wonderful, authentic French meal at this restaurant. I had escargots and salade niçoise, and both were excellent. Service was excellent and our server provided a terrific wine recommendation. Probably the only (minor) criticism is that the table bread we received was pretty mediocre in taste and texture. The dining is mostly alfresco which is quite pleasant in the cool New Orleans Spring evenings. It is small, so I recommend reservations! read more

For dinner we both ordered salads that were delicious. They also brought us French bread and butter while we waited for the food to come out. All of their seating is outdoors. Mostly covered. During the summer I could see this being very hot - but we dined in March while the weather is nice! Giving 4 stars because of the price. There are much nicer restaurants with a better ambiance that cost as much as this restaurant. For what we paid, we didn't get an "amazing" elegant experience. read more

Just lovely. First, love that they have a corkage policy and we could bring our own wine. Kenzie was a fabulous server. The open air dining room is very refreshing and hints of the Caribbean meets France. All of our starters and entrees were very good. The bouillabaisse was a tad too salty. The only issue was the service discussions. There was one light argument between service staff that we witnessed when we arrived but the manager stopped them quickly. As the service area is not private we also overheard lots of service discussions. I always say - would we go back? Yes, absolutely. Great good and lovely atmosphere. My daughter and I had dinner here Saturday night. I was pleasantly pleased by the ambiance. Indoor & outdoor seating with beautiful lights. We enjoyed a cheese plate and limoncello's to start. We loved the crawfish and mushroom ravioli! Yum. We also enjoyed escargot and beet salad. To pair we had a sparkling Rose. For our entree, we shared the steak. Plenty for both of us. The real magic was their floating island desert, delicate, light but delicious!! Brady our waitress was friendly and service was good. Super popular spot, but well-worth the wait! We had some spare time to wander around the neighborhood while we waited on a table at lunch, so the wait time passed pretty quickly! Not a super expansive menu, but they don't need one - definitely quality over quantity at this place! A little pricier than we'd usually go for a casual brunch, but definitely worth the extra $$! read more

Cafe Degas lived up to my expectations which were that this little French gem in Bayou St John with a tree in the middle of the dining area was the pinacle of romance! We did their Revelion menu in December which was a STEAL but the food was so good and well portioned, and the dining so well paced, I know I'll be back and more than willing to pay regular prices. read more

Cafe Degas is an authentic and quaint French restaurant along the Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans. The ambiance is romantic, the dining area gives the impression of a gazebo or wooden balcony that adds to the quaintness of the restaurant. The place is arguably small and very busy but we were able to manage a lovely conversation without any intrusion from other guests. We started our dinner with a mixed appetizers of three pâtés, a variety of cheeses and a small bundle of red grapes. We also had escargot which was very delicious. For main entrée, I had pan seared Grouper with green lentil with sun-dried tomatoes, baby frisée, sautéed asparagus on Lemon Basil Beurre Blanc. It was suited perfectly well with the bottle of Pinot Grigio. It was a great night out! The staff are really fantastic and very attentive, they will happily call you a cab at the end of the night! I will definitely come back to this place whenever I am in New Orelans, highly recommend! read more
