Went for lunch. One of the best meals I've ever had in regard to food, service and ambiance. It was a beautiful day and hostess seated us at a table inside restaurant, but open to sidewalk. Great for people watching! I ordered a martini only with a whisper of dirty and it was perfect, nice and cold with tiny flakes of ice. My husband was dismayed to discover there was only Kronenburg for beer, but he like it so much, he ordered another. We were served a basket of warm, sliced, almost sourdough tasting baguette, along with herbed garlic butter. Absolutely great with my martini! For entrees, I got the calf's liver and onions with bacon and stone ground grits. I hesitated to order this since it has to be cooked perfectly or else it's tough. It was wonderful: crispy on outside, and silky inside. Grits were as creamy as mashed potatoes with enough texture to make a bite of both heavenly. My husband ordered the steak tenderloin, which was surprisingly reasonable in price and with a serving large enough to bring some home. He also commented on how flavorable and perfectly cooked it was. We split the Chambourg Chantilly cake for dessert and it was a generous slice, again, with perfectly balanced flavors of raspberry and not overly sweet buttercream, as is just like Paris. We live in Baton Rouge and decided it was worth coming to N.O. more often just for Cafe Degas. If you appreciate fine cuisine, you must try it!! read more

Each plate served was literally thrown down onto the table with a loud clank. My entrée was actually served on the opposite end of the table from me as if someone were going to be seated with me. I sat there until it was cold before being asked how my meal was and if I would like anything to drink. The duck confit was extremely salty and not worth taking home. Definitely not worth the money. Great food, atmosphere, and customer service! French onion soup (la gratinee d'oignon): I sampled a little bit from a friend, and it was really tasty. The cheese baked atop was all gooey and encrusted the soup. The soup itself was good as well. Pate board (l'assiette de pates): This easily could have satisfied four people. The board was essentially double the plate's portion. My favorite was the duck pate as it almost melted in your mouth. There was three other pates, two salami varieties, fig mustard, roasted garlic cloves, cornichons, (bread) croutons, and a date. Definitely a nice variety board with really interesting house made pate. Crawfish ravioli (no fancy French name -- ha!): I had this appetizer as my entree as we were stuffed by the pate board. There were a good four to five pieces of ravioli stuffed with crawfish and mushrooms. The lemon sauce was super good and added a great base to this dish along with the few sprigs of spinach. Seared yellowfin tuna (la salade nicoise au thon poele): Though the tuna was only a small portion, the presentation of this entree was essentially a salad. The hubs said he liked it despite it having more veggies than anything else. The olives, potatoes, haricots verts, and especially the few anchovy pieces were interesting additions to me. There were also a boiled egg and a chunk of tomato. Overall, this appeared to be a batch of random ingredients thrown in with tuna as the centerpiece. Paris brest pastry: When I heard puff pastry as a descriptor for this dessert, I was sold. It was a fluffy dessert with an ever so slight sweetness. It was an airy and layered, textured cake that was simply delicious. The food, atmosphere, and customer service were superb! It's been a while since I've been to Cafe Degas and it did NOT disappoint! Went with hubs and a good friend and we were put at one of the coveted window seats by the sidewalk. Our server was so lovely, I deeply regret not remembering her name. We started with the cheese board which is a good size - maybe even too much- for 3 people. All the cheeses were so good! We all drank martinis, which were perfectly made every time. My go-to is the hangar steak with fries and veggies. It is always seasoned well, with a generous portion of fries, and the veggies are vibrant and flavorful. It's still wonderful! Steak cooked perfectly (medium rare). My hubs had the lamb chops and he is still raving about them. The ONLY thing left on his plate were the lamb bones. I wish we had room for dessert! Like most places, the prices here have increased significantly since my last visit. But it's still a good value, and one of NOLA's most charming restaurants. read more

We got very lucky to get into this lovely French cafe/restaurant on a Wednesday evening before the second Jazz fest weekend, without a reservation. The hostess, Justice, was lovely in helping us. The ambience is lovely, twinkling lights, covered wood patio, and a tree growing out of the center. The exterior sides roll up, adding to a patio feel. The menu is brief, a combination or French and creole: escargot and crayfish ravioli are both starters, while the mains include redfish and steak frites. After much debate, tow of us had the steak and out friend had the lamb. All was cooked to other, but I would judge it to be on the rare side (other reviews had mentioned as well). The steak at medium was perfect, but may have been on the medium rare elsewhere. My friend ordered her lamb medium rare and it arrived just as she wanted it. The steak came with roasted veggies and topped with a generous portion or thin fries. Soaked in the jus, they didn't need ketchup. We split the creme brûlée to end. While the food was phenomenal, the service was a bit mixed, it was great in the beginning, but at the end we had to find out server to ask for the check. I would still recommend, but make sure you have time, and may want to make a reservation. read more

Not sure if it's a French thing, but the bread that came with the escargot was supperr stale. The dish itself was enjoyable. My first time trying it and it tasted like pepperoni. La Salade Au Crabe -don't not recommend If I was only basing my reviews on the crab salad it would be a 2 star review.Incredibly underwhelming. The vignette was basic. I got no hint of mint and the grapefruit did not taste fresh. Not worth the price Service The French onion soup would have been great with a side of non stale bread.... This is a lovely little cafe in the Bayou St. John neighborhood, tucked among beautiful homes and some other restaurants. I snagged a corner spot on the outdoor patio and commenced ordering. The complimentary bread was a disappointment, being a little stale, dry, and tough, but the shallot and herb butter made up for it. The butter, however, was the first and last good thing I had to eat here. The crawfish ravioli had potential with the fresh pasta, but coupling crawfish with muddy pureed mushrooms and earthy spinach, all in an overly greasy "beurre blanc", with little to no taste other than the aforementioned muddiness was not very appealing. Additionally, the presentation was lacking. Up next were the mussels steamed with fennel and tarragon. Again, a poor presentation (they were simply poured from the pot in the kitchen into the bowl. Fine if I were at home, but for $21, I want something nicer). The broth lacked flavor and tasted overdone, as if it had been subpar to begin with and then was just cooked down so that the poor taste just intensified. It was also very one note. The mussels were okay, but lacked flavor. Several were not open and many had sandy residue, an unwelcome sensation. Pommes frites did come with the mussels, and next to the butter, these were my favorite thing. Fresh cut and fried properly in a really tasty oil (server was unsure of what it was). I finished with the panna cotta, a new dessert on the menu, according to my server. It came with whipped cream, a sliced (but not fanned) strawberry, and spiced pecans (cayenne, among other things, and sort of candied), another sensation that seemed out of place with the delicate dessert. The panna cotta was slightly different from others I've had, tasting of crème fraiche or sour cream, giving it a nice decadence. Finally, I sipped on a Bayou St. John cocktail (gin, cucumber, rose), which was okay but a little watered down. Overall, this was a disappointing culinary experience, but a lovely atmosphere. My server did well and has a lot of potential, and the host was helpful as well as handsome. Check out some of the other places in the area instead. Maybe cocktails and pommes frites here first, and then mosey on down the street. read more

This was our Christmas Eve lunch and it was WONDERFUL! Our waiter, Alex was very professional and extremely attentive. We started with the paté platter (the plate is plenty big enough for two people) and the escargot. Both starters were amazing and they brought extra bread to us so that we could soak up the escargot butter after we ate the snails. I think they use the Dong Phuong bread and it is crispy and delicious! For our lunch we split the hanger steak which was cooked a perfect rare/medium rare, as requested, and got an order of their house made fries to drag through the Hollandaise that tops the steak. We broke the poached egg open and mixed the gooey egg yolks with the sauces and oh my god was that good with the French fries. I loved the Brussels sprouts that came with it also. Cafe Degas is located on the same street where artist Edgar Degas spent some time (check out the Degas House a few blocks down Esplanade where he lived). By choosing him as a namesake, Cafe Degas sets a high bar for expectations: Does the Cafe live up to the Impressionist standards of its eponymous namesake, in the way Ravel and Debussy do with their music? Does the restaurant convey that sense of intimacy, attention to detail, and respect for the Old Masters shown in the artists' paintings? I'll leave the detailed comparison to painting and music to the art historians and musicologists, but I can report that the Cafe lives up to promise as a French-inspired New Orleans dining experience. It's small, intimate (or cramped, depending on your mood), in much the same way of a small Parisian bistro. On the menu one finds oysters and shrimp-n-grits and trout (New Orleans, check) and such items as "steak omelette with chimichurri" (French, check). There is expertise evident in the sommelier's wine list (New Orleans and France both, check). L'Assiette de Pâtes is no pleasure to type into a Yelp! review, but quite the opposite to consume. (My dining partner says I'm being too clever by half. Or as I might say, "trop malin de moitié." Yeah, she's right about that). There's Hangar Steak and Quiche and and, of course, Frites. Finish off with Crème Brûlée. (Again, better eating than typing). By now you should be getting the idea: for a French experience in New Orleans, Cafe Degas (along with Crepe Nanou Uptown) is an outstanding choice. Under conditions current as of this writing, the Cafe is offering expanded outside seating, with some tables under the oak branches and others in an enclosed enclave open to Esplanade Avenue. For COVID purposes the latter more enclosed space might not a good bet, but the variant-du-jour Omicron as of this writing seems to be infecting masked, vaccinated, boosted, and otherwise cautious people, maybe it makes no difference anyway. read more

I've had Cafe Degas bookmarked for the last year or two, and finally took the opportunity to check it off the list today. Everything about the lunch experience was nothing short of perfection. The host was friendly and got us seated quickly. The server was friendly and attentive. The ambiance is casual and comfortable. We started with a glass of house red wine and one of the best cups of French onion soup I've ever eaten, served with warm bread and butter. I followed the soup up with the crab salad, which was delicious. Light enough for lunch but totally satisfying. It's not an inexpensive lunch. I was recommended the Crawfish Ravioli. There was nothing special about it. It looked like won tons. Then I proceed to have the pan seared sheepshead. It was the lunch special. Fish had a strong smell. Tomato sauce looked like canned tomato sauce. It was definitely not worth the $33 dollars. Thankfully they took it back. We came here for brunch. I had the pan-seared blackened drum, and oh my, it was probably the best dish I've ordered from a restaurant, and this was one of the best meals I've had while in LA. I love mushroom risotto, and theirs were flavorful and had a good consistency. I never thought mushroom risotto would pair well with a white fish, but the flavors complimented each other. The meat of the fish was slightly firm and flaky. The dish has just a good amount of saltiness. The lemon beurre blanc sauce was a nice addition, and I'm glad that the sauce wasn't too lemony. Overall, it was a very delicious and memorable dish, and if I lived in LA, that would've been my go-to from this café. read more

I got the absolute worst food poisoning on a Sunday brunch of the French onion soup which was luke warm totally lacking cheese and the fish special of the day . I was so sick from the off tasting food that I could not go to work the following two days. I called to report this and the owner , Jacque remembered the day because we were sitting close by at the bar sitting because I could not get a table. The restaurant had lost its electricity and obviously the refrigeration was off which spoiled the food , he was not even able to eat the food which he orders, which was a beef goulash appetizer, he said it was far too salty and refused to eat his own restaurant food, none the less he did not tell the servers to remove the offering from the menu!!!! when I called to report the food poisoning, my call to Jacque was met with total disregard and dismissal attitude. He acted like this was very common and he did not even intend to offer a reimbursement, I asked for it and he reluctantly said he would credit my card but I had paid cash to avoid the additional charge they add for the use of a card which is not even disclosed to customers on the menu nor by server's announcement, he said he would send me a check , however this never occurred, I after 8 days called the restaurant asking to speak again to find out why he had ignored his statement that he would reimburse me and the help always said he was not in it had just left. I continued to call and was dismissed hurridly, I called again and said I was told I would be reimbursed. I had to return to the restaurant in person and receive my money with the rude treatment of the staff and no apologies whatsoever. I would have this negligent unprofessional business condemnEd and closed by the department of health. read more

This place is 5 star always. They are always so accommodating. We went last Saturday Night was a party of 4 until the appetizers and another person joined us. They put us at another table that was more accommodating for 5. No problem. I thought that was rather unusual especially during such a busy holiday. It was difficult to get the attention of our waiter sometimes but everyone is having those issues. The food was exceptional as usual with Soft Shell Crabs, Mussels,Escargot and Amberjack being served. Their wine list has something for everyone and their prices are very reasonable. Second clue was the angry customer that stopped our host from seating us, asking why he had been waiting for 30 mins for his server to bring his credit card back. Our server seemed irritated that we were there. We ordered wine, and I asked what the bottle price was versus the by the glass price. He heaved a deep sigh, shrugged, and mumbled "I dunno, I just bring it." Ummmm, ok.... Then our first course arrived. All to the wrong seat number and all staggered. We waited for ten minutes for my sister's soup to arrive. Flagged down the server; again he sighed and acted irritated that we were there, like we were bothering him. "Um, two of you actually had the soup for their entree, not their appetizer" that was my mom and I. Please don't argue with the table, if there was a misunderstanding just fix it and move on! And if it was your mistake, again just fix it and move on! She finally got her soup when we were almost all done with our course. Entrees again came out to the wrong seat number and staggered. I had to stand up and hunt through a side station for a spoon for my soup because my server was nowhere to be found. Desserts: server gestures vaguely to the wall. We saw other servers bring dessert menus to the table and discuss them, pointing out their favorites, but not our server. He THREW our check on the table and pretty much ran away. Never said anything along the lines of "thanks for coming in" or "have a good night" or anything. I've been a server everywhere from a hole-in-the-wall burger joint to James Beard Award winners so I know it is a difficult, demanding, fast-paced job but the least you can do is pretend to be happy people are giving you money! There are so many amazing historic and amazing restaurants in NOLA, this is one to skip unfortunately! Very disappointing because honestly the food, ambiance, wine, and cocktails were all fantastic, but the service left our entire party with a bad taste in our mouths. Try somewhere else! read more
