Some extended family was in town and had their hearts set on Union Square, so I Yelped it up and found this place with some good reviews and met them here. I had the, "club sammich", which for $8 was thinner than 2 fingers altogether. As with most places, they seem to not hear me when I say, "no tomatoes please", and proceeded to add them anyway. The sandwich was so thin and had barely even a dab of some kind of spreadable avocado and what looked like a half strip of bacon spread out, that I had to ask if it was even the right sandwich and have them point out where the avocado was. After saying, "oh, I asked for no tomatoes ", they replied, "can't you just take them off?". Even if I liked tomatoes, it seemed like they put the corners of 2 rotten tomatoes on that sandwich; not even a hearty slice. The Chai Latte was actually pretty good, but they took over 10 minutes to make 2 small mochas for my Aunt and Uncle when there was no one in the place. Find another place... read more

Lovely cafe, the pastrami sandwich was amazing! My friends and I will be coming here every week for coffee and lunch. Highly recommend!

I do like this place. It's very small, but cozy, the staff is very friendly, and the food is fresh and good, including sandwiches, soups, sushi, mixed fruit, and salds. Three stars due to the rather average "Vienna" coffee brew they serve up here. I'm glad they stopped playing the Christian music -- just think of all the Jewish doctors and dentists who pop in (this cafe is in a medical building), as well as non-believers who'd rather not be prosetylized. Update: the cafe has changed ownership (I believe) since I wrote the above. It's had a face lift. The menu has a small but tasty selection and they now carry a variety of excellent pastries, desserts, etc. read more

It's not often you find a nice quiet little hole in the wall coffee shop - these days, everything is Starbucks, Caribou, DD or some other large chain. The staff was friendly enough and the prices were reasonable. I did like the little flaxseed muffins they had on the counter in individual bites. The only thing I was offended about was that the smallest coffee was named the "Jake," which for obvious reasons and a coffee habit that is far from small, would cross my sensibilities. Hmph! Stopped in before an appointment nearby and had one of the best cups of coffee I have ever had. Unlike the chains spread out in SF, this coffee was smooth and tasteful. Being a coffee aficionado who prefers the experience of coffee from Italy, Cafe Encore fits the bill. If I worked in the city I would buy coffee here every day. Given its a bit off the path in Union Square my guess is more tourists and the connected office building folks know about it. My usual breakfast and lunch spot cause I work in the same building. The staffs are super sweet and friendly (we even go by a first name basis now). Every time I walk in, I always get greeted and they even know my usual order before I even order (unless I'm feeling something different that day). I love their soup of the day, just the right amount to satisfy your stomach. Their smoothies that they make are quite delicious too ! Also, you can't go wrong with one of their wraps if you're feeling a tad more hungry than usual, pretty big portion and you'll definitely get full off of it ! read more

Only came here because it was conveniently across the street from where my classes are. Very small cafe with an extensive menu that made me scan it to see what they had even though I just wanted to order a drink which also had a lot of options. Ordered a strawberry smoothie. The man taking my order snatched the money out of my hands. Umm...okay I see you just hate Monday's. The smoothie did the job when I have short break and need to energize.
